Dutch vote in snap election seen as test for Europe's far right | TOI |

The Dutch headed to the polls Wednesday for a knife-edge election, with all eyes on the performance of the far-right, which is riding high in many top European countries.

Polls suggest anti-immigration and anti-Islam firebrand Geert Wilders could repeat his stunning election success from two years ago with his far-right Freedom Party (PVV).

But with half the electorate still undecided, the result is too close to call, and a pack of three other parties has closed the gap in recent days.

Geert Wilders funded by Israel lobby in the United States - see FEAR Inc. - to "Stand with Israel" by attack on the Islam faith and Muslims in the Netherlands.

Parties make their messages too 'cerebral' while populists go for emotions - opinion

Roy Kramer, author of the book "Why Wilders does win" says language matters and Geert Wilders' success is due to the way that he communicates.

'The Netherlands' opportunity to bring back stability' - opinion

Armida van Rij, senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform, has this take on today's election:

"Two years after the last election and a highly unstable coalition, this is the Netherlands' opportunity to bring back stability to the country.

It faces a number of pressuring policy issues: housing shortages, maintaining affordable care and, increasingly, concerns about rule of law in the country.

The liberal-populist-far right coalition failed to address any of these challenges, and in some cases exacerbated them.

Yet these are the third elections in 5 years' time and the support for Geert Wilders remains high, making it difficult for other parties to form a majority government without him."

Argentine media are full of Nicolás Keenan, the possible 'first gentleman' of the Netherlands De Volkskrant |

Dutch elections typically receive little attention in Argentina. But now that Rob Jetten may become prime minister, things are different. "After Queen Máxima, Argentina may now also deliver the first gentleman of the Netherlands," writes Clarín, the largest newspaper in the South American country.

Nicolás Keenan, Jetten's 28-year-old fiancé, was born in Buenos Aires but spent most of his youth in Spain and Italy due to his father's international hockey career. Keenan himself also became a successful hockey player: with the Argentinian national team, he won two gold medals at the Pan American Games and competed in the Olympic Games in Tokyo and Paris.

In 2017, he moved to The Hague to play for hockey club HC Klein Zwitserland. Jetten had to temporarily leave his home for safety reasons in the summer of 2022--it was a time of grim farmer protests--and ended up in the neighborhood where Keenan lived. The two bumped into each other at Albert Heijn and fell madly in love.

Dutch elections: Exit polls suggest centry party ahead | DW News |

Exit polls show a shift to the left, with the center-left D66 party projected to take the most seats in parliament - around 18 more than in the last election two years ago. Geert Wilder's far-right Freedom party appears to have taken a beating. Last time, they won the highest number of seats. But the first exit poll shows them in second, having lost around 12 seats. The vote was seen as a test of Wilder's popularity after his party walked out of the coalition government, causing its collapse.

Pro-European liberal Rob Jetten could become youngest and first openly gay Dutch prime minister | France24 News |

The Dutch election has ended in an unprecedented cliffhanger - with only a few thousand votes separating the far-right Freedom Party of Geert Wilders and the pro-European liberals of Rob Jetten. With nearly all ballots counted, both are projected to win 26 seats - a stunning turnaround that could make Jetten the country's youngest and first openly gay prime minister.

Outrage over Wilders' tweet: 'Kick Halsema out of the country'

Amsterdam - 8 Oct 2024: Prime Minister Dick Schoof announced that he and the cabinet support all mayors, "including Halsema."

He made this announcement after Utrecht Mayor Dijksma called on the cabinet to distance itself from a statement Wilders made on X. The PVV leader wrote alongside a photo of a pro-Palestine demonstration: "Get that scum out of the country. And Halsema can join them."

Dijksma, who is also chair of the Association of Dutch Municipalities, called Wilders' statement "undermining the authority of mayors" and disproportionate.

"Completely irresponsible"

"All parties in parliament must stand firm for the rule of law and our constitutional freedoms. As mayors, we strive for balance in this every day. The law is paramount, especially when facilitating demonstrations; even if this stirs up a lot of emotions," Dijksma wrote on Instagram. "I find it completely irresponsible that Wilders is making this statement at the expense of our colleague Femke Halsema."

Frans Timmermans, party leader of GroenLinks/PvdA, also defended Halsema. "Femke Halsema has shown under difficult circumstances in recent days what 'keeping things together' really means: reconciliation and setting boundaries, and enforcing them if necessary. A mayor the whole of the Netherlands can be proud of." Wilders responded to Timmermans' tweet with the words: "Timmermans and Halsema have completely lost their way."

"I stand for the fundamental right to demonstrate"

Mayor Femke Halsema

Around a thousand people attended yesterday's demonstration of support for Israel on Dam Square. Halsema pointed to the nearby Damrak where counter-demonstrators could make themselves heard. Halsema told AT5 last night that counter-demonstrations must take place "within sight and earshot" of the protest.

"I stand for the fundamental right to demonstrate," she summarized. "As long as it remains within the parameters and boundaries of the law. If not, we will take action. Unfortunately, that's what happened today." Some of the counter-demonstrators were eventually arrested.
