Why is Violent Media so Pervasive?

In today's mass media world, research tells us that violence sells. Not only do we spend more to consume violent media, but violent media costs less to export, it costs less to translate, and it has way fewer problems being picked up by markets in different cultures than ours. As a language, violence is easy to understand and requires little context in order to present a plot: Explosions, gunfire, and martial arts are a language that anyone can understand. Consider some of the following numbers ...

As someone who has practiced martial arts for nearly 40 years, I don't believe that the mass media understands the language of martial arts, only the violent outward manifestations.  A good dojo is a welcoming place filled with people trying to figure out the most effective and efficient ways to use their bodies, not necessarily to cause or avoid pain and destruction, but to live honestly and to the full extent of their physicality.  They lend each other their bodies for practice as they all try to figure out this conundrum.

I'd love to see a martial arts show in which there are no spectacular throws or falls but simply a touch or move that breaks an agressor's balance and puts that violent person in an uncomfortably vulnerable position where they can be held without any recourse for as long as the mover or toucher wishes.  I've seen it done and have, once or twice, done it myself.

That's the art in the martial.

Cheap to produce. SF requires expensive sets and imagination. Crime plots can be endlessly reproduced.
Comedy is chancy. Might offend someone.

I really like my old Cosby records, although Cosby himself is a creepy douchebag.
Most of the '50s and '60s comedies are politically incorrect.

Westerns have been done to death and are available on non-network channels.

Documentaries are the preserve of PBS.
