Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Had a conversation with a light rail driver in Denver recently. He said they have trouble with recruitment. At first, they only recruited train drivers from the existing bus driver staff, on the assumption that the bus drivers would be familiar with the sorts of things that go on in mass transportation environments. But they didn't get enough bus drivers to sign up for the job.

The reason, he said, is that the bus drivers have to show up at work at 6:00 AM and then just drive out of the huge parking lots all at the same time. It's chaos, but happens pretty quickly. But the train drivers have to show up at 4:00 AM because the trains have to depart from the overnight terminal while following the normal block spacing rules, which means it takes much longer to get them into service each day.

If that's actually the case, it seems like an example of poor system design.
