Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

German Diary: excursions into activism

by Jeffersonian Democrat Tue Jun 28th, 2005 at 07:33:02 AM EST

OK, I haven't been pulling my weight; here or in activism in general.  The last thing I did was march in Berlin on the eve of the Iraq war.  Now, I am conducting my second act in activism.

I teach at a German university on a graduate exchange.  Though I am a Germanist, I teach in the American Studies department.  This semester I am teaching a course on avant-garde theater.  I gave my students a choice: do the regular oral referat (presentation) or perform a play that I am teaching.  They chose to perform a play and we are performing "Not in My Name: A Protest Play Against the Death Penalty" from The Living Theater out of New York.  It's written not only for professional actors but also for activists.

The great thing about this play is that it is short, simple, yet powerful.  It does have elements of Brecht's Lehrstücke.  It offers the players creativity, especially in where it takes place.  Since the EU does not have the death penalty, they chose to set it in Turkey.  That is an important decision since Turkey is trying to join the EU and it is an issue that affect Europeans more than placing it in the US.  I tried to install a sense of the last generation, the 68-ers into my students.  I hope I succeeded.  They will perform it on the busiest place on campus on July 19th, the last day of the semester.

If you are interested on how it progresses and the reactions from it, I will continue to write updates and results.  My department is supporting it fully.  The kids seem to be excited.  And I kinda feel good that I am contributing in some way.

Thanks for posting this. Yes, this sounds like an exciting project! Do you think you could invite your students to discuss it here?

I'm one step in front of you Jerome, Hausfrau gave me that idea.  I'll get more in depth but I'm heading off to a Left rally right now protesting the murder of a Left kid not 500 meters from where I live by neo-Nazi youth.  The Polizei are out in force!

Nazis raus!  Vive la Revolution!

I forgot to post this before I left, but now that I am back, it was a success.  I guess I was "middle-aged" there.  The majority sported mohawks and were considerably younger.  There were others though that were older and greyer than I.  I'm kinda in the middle but had a good time speaking with folks of all ages.  From my accent, they knew I was a foreigner but that was perfect since it's we who they are demonstrating for.  It was peaceful with no counter protests from the Nazis.  One thing though, I was reminded of that 70's song with the the lyric:
"oooooh that smell, can you smell that smell?"

It was good though, a sense of solidarity.

Great project!  Can you say a bit more about your students?  Are they mainly Germans?  Did you face reluctance from anyone?
by ask on Tue Jun 28th, 2005 at 10:35:18 AM EST
My students are all German except for a girl from Sri Lanka, an undergrad from Iowa, and of course myself (as the only Ausländer - foreigners in the course).  Most study "Amerikanistik" or American Studies but it is cross-listed with the German department.

I only faced reluctance today after I told them that the whole faculty is coming out to see them...they are terrified of my mentor, the department head.  Nevertheless, I told them that last week i was a democrat and gave them a choice (between an oral report or a performance), this week I am the dictator since they made their choice...no backing out now, the flyers are already being made.

But they are a great bunch of kids.
