Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Vaagsallmenningen, BergenI am off to meet up with ask and his significant other, Curly (known to some from Booman Tribune). They are visiting my neck of the woods today, and the plan is to have a beer at this place, outside the tallest house in the background. Actually, I must dash!

So, what are you up to?

blistering hot, sunny, and humid in Philly.  Can't be outside for more than about 15 minutes at a time or your brain begins to fry.

we're fighting over the computer with the kids (DVD vs bluetooth internet) and of course I lost so back to my phone... (but the beach under the rain has its charm)

On the topic of "internet dates", I must say that I have yet to be surprised by the people I met in real life after discussions here (well, over at dKos or MoA so far). I think regulars bring out a lot of their personality in our fairly dense discussions here, and that's hard to cheat.

It's getting so dang hot 'n' heavy down here Toulouse way that I can only dream of a beer in Norway or a walk on a Breton beach in the rain...

Murder execution style of Pim Fortuyn - a right wing politician killed days before his election to Dutch parliament - by Volkert van der Graaf, a left-wing animal rights radical - 18 years prison sentence, release within 12 years.

Murder execution style of Theo van Gogh - an outspoken film producer of "Submission" and criticaster of the Islam - by Mohammed Bouyeri, an Islamist and radical of Moroccan descent - LIFE sentence, no early release possible.

Don't ask me to explain the great difference in sentencing, although I do agree with the latest sentence.

Liberal style Dutch society, MSM and the Justicial Bench --
Pim Fortuyn suffered a hate campaign from the Left political parties in the few months when he decided to run for PM and national elections.
Theo van Gogh was loved by liberal Dutch society, his right for freedom of speech was filled with insults and hatred versus the Dutch Muslim community.

It's a winter down under all tho we have temperatures around 20 degrees every day here in Qld. This was a very mild winter so far. Can't think about global warming or any of the regular worries and I actually spent a lot of time today playing with a few photos of mine. Here they are (smaller version).

Back home again after a nice day with ask and Curly. After the beer we had a lovely dinner at The Unicorn, a fish restaurant in the yellow 14th century house to the right:

    TheUnicornExterior

    - and then strolled up the mountainside past the 12th century St. Mary's Church:

    - up through here:

    Dreggen

    - to this place, an old fire station:

    Skansen2

    - and back downtown another route.

I can only speak for myself, but I certainly had great company and a great time. Ask may post a picture of us later.

We certainly enjoyed ourselves as well.  The company, the environment and the food were all first grade.
I doubt the hotel will let me download the software needed to post pics so I'll save it for another time that it may be appropriate.
Time for breakfast and then we need to be tourists for a few hours before returning to Oslo.  Bergen - what a great little city!  But I knew that - having been a student here more than two decades ago.

The only drawback to my hanging out over here at Eurotrib is to hear about all of you having great trips-seeing great pictures- like this while I'm stuck in redneck part of California and know I'll never be able visit Europe-or anywhere else for that matter. Boo-hoo huh.

Yes!  I was thinking this place would give me a nice shot in the arm of the culture and progressive ideals that seem so particular to Europe, but ... well, now I am just jealous!  I wanna go on holiday in a quaint European town too!  ...Preferably somewhere in the south of France ...  Oh, this is painfull ...

But don't say you'll never be able to travel.  It really is not impossibe.  It just takes some serious planning and saving.  But any sacrifices you have to make to travel are most often well worth it.
