Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

An open mind...

The mind is like a parachute.  It's not effective until it has been opened. - Anonymous

This was a quote I heard at a recent course on Professional Mediation given to a room full of Solicitors, Barristers, Accountants and a few others from various business backgrounds.
The course was very enjoyable and I would hope to write about it when I finish the advanced course a month from now...but this phrase has decided to lodge in my brain...so here you go...it's written down now.

I belong to the group which more relies on visual input, instead of hearing, to remember things. I find I remember stuff better, if I write it down.

Unless I am mistaken, it is not anonymous, it is by Pierre Desproges.

I thought it was from Dan Millman. :-) though he worded it a little differently - "the mind is like a parachute, it works best when it is open." But what ever way it is said, I do agree with it.

My apologies.  The person giving the course had said that it was an opening line on an essay they had reviewed for someone's thesis.  I hadn't heard it before.

Their minds were so open their brains fell out.

Deborah Lipstadt, professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies at Emory University, about the editors of the Daily Northwestern. See this for the context.

I submit there is a difference between having an open mind and being an intellectual slob too lazy, or fearful, to make a decision or apply a judgement.

"The mind is like a parachute. It's made of straps and orange silk, and it stops you hitting the ground at terminal velocity if you jump out of a plane."

I don't know. Something not quite so snappy about that variation, perhap?
