Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Carcassonne meet report (NOW WITH SLIDESHOW)

by Lupin Mon Mar 26th, 2007 at 02:42:21 AM EST

We had a lovely time at the Brasserie of the Hotel Terminus in Carcassonne last Saturday, all six of us (seven, counting the magic dragon) Kossacks and EuroTribbers: John (aka afew), Helen from the UK, Bobby and Kelley from near Beziers and Lupin and Mrs. Lupin from Chalabre.

Topics of conversation ranged from the French elections (understandably) to Tony Blair to the latest news from the US.

Our next quarterly meet will be at the same place, same time, on Saturday, June 23. Pencil it in already.

UPDATE Here is a photobucket slideshow of our lunch!

Display:
It was a very pleasant meet-up hard by the banks of the Canal du Midi - we met beneath the red cross below:

Conversation was indeed about American politics (subset: why is Tony Blair such a poodle?) and the French elections. The lunch menu was slices of roast dragon. Dragon-meat's rather piquant tang was nicely offset, in this recipe, by a nouvelle cuisine peach and lychee stuffing. However, dragon tends to be a bit on the dry side, we found. Lupin suggested it should be treated like duck and force-fed to fatten it, but persuading young maidens to get into the funnel appeared problematical, and anyway no one wanted to get their fingers burned trying it out.

Next time the menu will be..? Suggestions welcome.

During the afternoon, Helen and I pursued historical and cultural investigations in the ancient town of Carcassonne (whose Car is Celtic and means fortified place, as in Cardiff or Carlisle). Facing a howling North-West wind and icy showers (we are plucky Brits after all :-)), we fought our way on till we found the Gaulish remains of the bar Chez Félix (a cousin of Obélix, natch). There Helen showed remarkable archeological prowess is identifying the origin of the hops in Kronenbourg 1664 Printemps : hop-gardens (whose name I've forgotten) in Oregon. Astounding. I've never seen a wine-snob do that well identifying vine-type and vineyard. Of course, our interest was entirely academic, since the beer was from 1664. Post-Gaulish, but a significant object of study all the same.

Then this train (seen here leaving Carcassonne station) took me home.

This is the same kind as Melanchthon showed here. Just to show that the Midi-Pyrénées region has these Bombardiers too. The Languedoc-Roussillon region ones in Carcassonne station were red. Unless my keen archeological sight was blunted by then.

So, how many pints is that? ;)

After all, members here should be able to measure one Carcassonne by an exact number and I need to estimate what one Barcelona x 4 days may require.

I'm afraid our research was entirely qualitative. No quantitative efforts were made. ;)

...if anyone interested: afew's train is from Bombardier's Autorail à Grande Capacité (AGC) platform of regions-ordered local trains for SNCF, thus designed to provide for a wide variety of tailor-made versions at the regions' wishes. These include diesel, electric (AC, DC, multi-system) and hybrid drive, 3 or 4 cars, varous inside designs. I am pretty certain that afew's picture shows a hybrid series B 81500, maybe afew can confirm by reading the number in white under the front window in the original version of the image.

(BTW, Melanchton's picture shows something else, a double-deck EMU from Alstom's Coradia Duplex family = SNCF TER2Nng.)

The pic is here from this railfaneurope page.

It's a Bombardier AGC, hybrid (diesel/electric) series B 18500. This one appears to have the number B 18514, though I can't read under the window.

I didn't realize Melanchthon's was an Alstom.

Well, there are a number of approximations, misleading statements, and outright lies in what I wrote above...

But this is the spitting image of the train I took. Could even be the same one.

Aha! I suspected that that map with an inviting aerial target designation doesn't really point to a significant concentration of ET regulars, but Sarkozy's hotel room...

There was something of that in my identification of the hop variety in Kronenburg printemps. I still think I was right - Grand Yakima hops if anyone is interested - but I would admit I was a long way from certainty.

Or rather hops from the Grand Yakima region which I now know to be a version of Hallertauer hop that have been developed for a more aromatic flavour and known as Mount Hood.

There was something of what? The approximation, the misleading statement, or the outright lie?

I think the people has a right to know.

Forgot to add: I was lucky enough to catch one of the first of these on a test run when I was in the Loire valley four years ago.

Thanks for this report.

I'd hope bruno-ken will post a report of the parallel event in Tokyo, too.

Salut, Lapin!
Glad to read this report.  Wish I could have participated.  Spring is about to arrive here in Boston.

This all brings back frond memories of the Toulouse riverside picnic last year. Glad to see the sud-ouest is continuing to be a regular meeting point.

Good to see you around too! These days I'm around mostly as an occasional reader because of other work related projects I'm involved in but I try to keep up with what's happening here at Eurotrib.

Gadzooks, I look a right mess in those photos. I think I'm gonna ban photos of me in future unless a qualified makeup and hair expert is in close attendance.
