Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

STOP B.......!

by afew Mon Mar 16th, 2009 at 09:16:19 AM EST

At yesterday's conference of Europe-Ecologie, the French list for the European elections composed of members of les Verts and other environment-conscious groups on the left, Dany Cohn-Bendit went after Barroso.

EuropeanVoice blog - The paper clip, 16 March

an announcement by Daniel Cohn-Bendit, co-president of the Greens / EFA group in the European Parliament, that he wants to form an alliance against the re-appointment of José Manuel Barroso as president of the European Commission. “We are going to propose to all who are interested to make an alliance around the slogan ‘Stop Barroso', [an alliance] against the re-appointment of one of the most harmful actors in Europe,” Cohn-Bendit said yesterday at a convention of the ‘Europe-Ecologie' party.

The Greens would no doubt back Poul Nyrup Rasmussen against Barroso for head of the Commission:

According to the co-president of the Greens in the European Parliament, "on one side Nicolas Sarkozy tells you he's more and more critical of Barroso," but "in fact, the European Peoples Party (EPP) of which (Sarkozy's party) the UMP is a member, is the party that has again proposed to reappoint Barroso.
If there is "a person who, precisely, offers a different policies from Barroso's as President of the Commission, we will join the alternative to Barroso," said Daniel Cohn-Bendit, referring particularly to the Danish Socialist Poul Nyrup Rasmussen.
"In return" the Green Group, "an independent group", "will aim at taking the presidency of the European Parliament because, for us, the European Parliament is the right place for pursuing our politics," he stipulated.
"It'll be me or someone else, we'll see," he said, expressing the hope that the Greens will go from "42 to about sixty" MEPs.

Didn't we start this with Stop Blair? And what can we do to join in stopping the other B...?

Since the EP is needed to confirm the commission it can take the power over the executive, and this looks like a promising first step.

Yes. Cohn-Bendit for president of the EP isn't a bad idea, either.

Cohn Bendit might get ALDE's support by trading the Rasmussen horse for the Watson horse.

I wonder if the slogan "Stop Blair!" had any influence on the choice of slogan here?

Well, I had contacted Dany Cohn-Bendit and asked for his support for StopBlair. He had said he would support us but, as far as I know, he didn't follow suit. So he was very well aware of our petition...

An alternative to collecting signatures - which might be good again - would be to collect some sort of statements from EP candidates - individuals or parties.

In the latter case there might be more interesting question then a simple yes/no to Barroso. Perhaps "The head of the commission is such an important position that the EP should choose between several candidates for the position. If elected I will support efforts in this direction." Or something with more schwung but in the same direction.

If the election turns into a referendum on Barroso then at least it is about something the EU does. If it turns into a referendum on if the parliament should elect the commission then there is a real chance to move things forward.

Cohn-Bendit should have a chat with Jon Worth? I mean the Anyone But Barroso campaign is looking a bit dormant, but still, it's nicely designed.

The PES is still demonstratively not running a candidate, so we'll see.

Except for the name - Stop Barroso! is much better. (Does "anyone" include Vaclav Klaus?)

But that's a petition already started.
