an announcement by Daniel Cohn-Bendit, co-president of the Greens / EFA group in the European Parliament, that he wants to form an alliance against the re-appointment of José Manuel Barroso as president of the European Commission. “We are going to propose to all who are interested to make an alliance around the slogan ‘Stop Barroso', [an alliance] against the re-appointment of one of the most harmful actors in Europe,” Cohn-Bendit said yesterday at a convention of the ‘Europe-Ecologie' party.
The Greens would no doubt back Poul Nyrup Rasmussen against Barroso for head of the Commission:

| | According to the co-president of the Greens in the European Parliament, "on one side Nicolas Sarkozy tells you he's more and more critical of Barroso," but "in fact, the European Peoples Party (EPP) of which (Sarkozy's party) the UMP is a member, is the party that has again proposed to reappoint Barroso. If there is "a person who, precisely, offers a different policies from Barroso's as President of the Commission, we will join the alternative to Barroso," said Daniel Cohn-Bendit, referring particularly to the Danish Socialist Poul Nyrup Rasmussen. "In return" the Green Group, "an independent group", "will aim at taking the presidency of the European Parliament because, for us, the European Parliament is the right place for pursuing our politics," he stipulated. "It'll be me or someone else, we'll see," he said, expressing the hope that the Greens will go from "42 to about sixty" MEPs. |
Didn't we start this with Stop Blair? And what can we do to join in stopping the other B...?
