Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Biffo the Cowen doesn't enjoy the naked circus.

by Colman Wed Mar 25th, 2009 at 11:11:16 AM EST

An anonymous artist hung two portraits of An Taoiseach Brian Cowen (informally known as "Biffo" - Big Ignorant Fucker From Offaly) in Dublin galleries last week in a guerilla action. All very amusing, though it's not clear to me what political point the artist was trying to make.

The government reaction has been less amusing: first, the national broadcaster was pressured into dropping a TV news item about the paintings because the government considered them "disrespectful" (they should hear what's being said about them now) and secondly the Gardai (police) have visited a local radio station in order to track down the artist because “the powers that be want action taken”. Apparently they intend cautioning him or her for " incitement, indecency and criminal damage - for hammering a nail into the wall of the National Gallery".

Inciting whom to what, I wonder?

You mean the artist or the big ignorant one from Offaly?

Oh my goodness.

The charge of hammering a nail into the wall of the gallery sounds serious.

Hmmm...don't know which is worse...the painting or the real live version...

In completely unrelated news, 4 journalists, two from the rue89 website and two from France3, are being asked to go to the police on April 1st to explain themselves about the publication of this video :

It shows Sarkozy being aggressive at various journalists and France3 employees, and was shot before a live interview.

Completely unrelated news, obviously.

Except that both news services are being accused of being "disrespectful" to their leaders and betters?

Well, Europe is the heartland of democracy, so criticising one's leaders can't be problematic, obviously. So the news can't represent that tendency, the same thing can't be happening in, say, Italy and representing a move towards autocracy - so the two news items can't be related.

I guess the reason, why they have to go to the police is copy right violation issues.

Yes, the actual complaint is "theft and counterfeiting". But such "theft and counterfeiting" was certainly not pursued for most of the past couple decades ; and most journalism is illegal if that film is. The trial is clearly political...

In also unrelated news, Hervé Eon has seen his suspended sentence of a €30 fine confirmed by the appeal court. Hervé Eon had been arrested for going to a Sarkozy visit with a "Casse toi pov'con" panel. He has made an appeal to the cour de cassation and intends to go the the European court of justice afterwards.

And what a fine Ballsy Intelligent Fellow From Offaly he really is!  Sometimes the reaction to a piece of "performance art" is more revealing than the art itself...

I think this is a fine case of an artist hitting the nail on the head.

Sorry - had to say it. The lack of discussion on the national broadcaster of the fact that this is prime topic of conversation everywhere is a little unnerving. He's looking for something cheap to print money onto!

Reminded of when Bloom is deciding whether to let one drop or not.

I wonder (and this is serious) if the artist has the same thing in mind. It's the eyes and esp. the mouth.

The Gov only objected to the serious news bulletin being used by the opposition to push a political agenda. The people regularly choose Fianna Fail despite the  control of the Media by the opposition (mainly fine gael who wore blue shirts and were the nazi parti in Ireland in the 1030's).
