[FINAL] Census taking for Sept. 11 meetup at Pere Lachaise

by LEP Thu Sep 10th, 2009 at 09:22:05 AM EST

[FINAL] I've made reservations for Friday evening at 7p.m. at the New Nioullaville restaurant, for 13-15 persons. The address is 32, rue de l'Orillon in the 11th arondissement. It is a couple of blocks east of Metro station Belleville (on Blvd. de Belleville) and then right for about 100 meters. I ate there tonight and it was excellent. We can eat a la carte, dim sum or a banquette menu for about 27 euros a head. My friend and I never left the dim sum except for adding a delicious plate of chinese vegetables. Our bill was 38 euros including a glass of wine, tea and dessert.

The Friday project is to visit the Pere Lachaise cemetary in Northern Paris (perhaps the most famous non military cemetary in the world) and see the tombs of Jim Morrison and some French notables as well; and afterwards to have a Chinese dinner.

bumped by dvx, with minor edit

The metro stop "Pere Lachaise" is on two metro lines, Lines 2 and 3. It seems, however, that metro stop "Phillipe Auguste" on line 2 is right next to the main entrance of the cemetary. It is then three or four metro stops back to Belleville which is the center of the Northern Paris Chinatown where we can dine.

Rahphael has been to Pere Lachaise recently and tells me that it's all uphill from the entrance so plan to be in good shape. Of course it'll be all downhill on the way back to the metro station on the way to dinner. He thinks we need at least two hours and possibly three to see a minimum. The cemetary closes at 6p.m.

See this site for a bit of information,
http://www.paris.org/Expos/PereLachaise/

We need to fix a time to meet and I need to know how many will be coming for the Chinese dinner. I propose meeting at 4p.m.at the Phillipe Auguste metro station. And yes, Fran, Chinese restaurants usually have some very nice vegetable dishes.

Please tell me who is planning to come and what time you all would like to meet. Once we have a good idea, I'll go scout out some restaurants and make a reservation.

Update [2009-9-08 by LEP]: As of September 8th the following are attending: LEP, Fran, Helen, dvx, gk, MillMan, afew, Jake. Colman and Sam are a maybe as are Nanne and Cyrille? For dinner only, Melanchthon, Bernard, Nanne, Cyrille and Jake's brother,Rasmus.

Sorry. I deleted this diary by mistake along with the five comments to it. That's the first time I've ever done that but it seems to me we need a "Are you sure you want to delete" question.

I'm still coming. None of the guides I have mention a bar in the vicinity that's notable, so I guess it'll be whatever's closest.

Do you have a cell phone that works in France?

Also, here's the link for a virtual map of the cemetary with the major tombs noted by a cross. We could agree to meet you in the vicinity of one of the tombs, say at 4 p.m.

Sorry LEP, but tramping around a cemetery looking at the tombs of famous dead people is not my idea a fun way to spend now rare afternoons in Paris - but chacun a son ghoul :-)

I think I'll probably have a look at books by famous dead and living people in Shakespeare & co. and then, if the weather is OK (forecast is "sunny"), have a drink on the deck of one of the boat-bars parked nearby with a view of the back of Notre Dame.

Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner - that I moved to Nice.

do we actually have a time and place for meeting yet ? I shall prbably be walking up from Les Halles where I'm planning to have lunch.

I can meet anytime, would prefer earlier rather than later but I understand that it may clash with people's arrival times.

I'm going to suggest that we meet around 4p.m. at the Phillipe Auguste metro station (line 2). That will give us about two hours to stroll around Pere Lachaise.

I'll then try to make a reservation in a Chinese Restaurant at Belleville for 7p.m. One Chinese restaurant that comes to mind is The President, a very large and well known restaurant right at metro Belleville (also line 2). If I can get a large table for about 15 persons that might be perfect.
The critiques on the internet of The President have been spotty. Does anyone know it?

I'll post my mobile phone number in this diary next week.

People seem to be saying (in the Internet crits) that Le Président ain't what it used to be.

They say the same, but less strongly, about another big Chinese restaurant a block away, New Nioulaville.

Here's another, three Métro stops from Père Lachaise, Sin-An-Kiang, that seems quite well appreciated.

That's at Republique. If we walk to metro Pere Lachaise Republique's only a few stations away. I'll take a look on Wednesday if possible. We are somewhere between 12 and 15 persons.

For New Nioulaville, it would have to be a recent trend.

Or to have been absolutely incredible in the past. Anyway, it was pretty good last year.

I think it's too late, but I'd like to advertise nevertheless:

On friday, a friend of mine is play acting "L'enseigneur" in le Trianon theatre in Paris (80 Boulevard Rochechouart 75018, Metro line 2) at 19h00, cost 18-25€.

It needs to be able to understand french, but it's not as difficult as classical plays. It's a belgian play about a french literature teacher who is sentenced by its judges to go around explaining her story.

Her story, as a teacher is obviously quite tragical, and describes the difficulties arising in teaching in contemporary belgium (and France): the job loss of glamour, the lack of interest for literature , the taste for quick easy money and the way students will avoid efforts...

So, if anyone would feel interested, I recommend it (I've already seen it twice, it was in Avignon theatre festival two years ago and is quite good).

Hi LEP, I did not think I would be able to make it tomorrow, but now it is looking possible.

If I let you know for sure by this (Thursday) evening (French time), might it still be possible to join you for dinner at New Nioulaville and (less likely) Père Lachaise?  If it's too late, no worries, I'll see you on Saturday!

  4. veal a l'imperial

Happy to be part of that if 11 people would like to go for it (it's a restaurant for sharing dishes in any case), as long as I don't have to drink the two bottles of wine.

;-) OK, I understand that's actually for the 12 people. Just pretending.
