For me train travel is for catching up on reading. But I guess that doesn't work in the U.S  (outside NYC).

Trains are good venues for reading, even outside New York.  I can often finish a book on an Amtrak ride Chicago to Milwaukee and return or on an overnighter.  For the two-night-out West Coast trains I plead guilty to bringing along a portable video player.
