Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Welcome to Helen's Beer bar

by Colman Wed Jan 16th, 2013 at 12:41:26 PM EST

Welcome to Helen's Beer bar; my blog about the wonderful world of Amber Nectar.

Or more accurately, it's my opportunity to ride some hobby horses, exercise some prejudices and generally give praise and throw bricks at the deserving (and anyone who gets in the way) on the various topics and issues surrounding the subject. But it will all be about beer. There is little point pretending I know much about wine or have any interest in spirits, although there may be an occasional dip into the debasement of the youth market if I'm feeling particularly bilious.

Just as in all other industries, the brewing industry is not just subject to cost pressure but also to fashion so that one minute everybody is brewing malty brown beers and then they're making yellow hoppy ones. Accountants have been chipping away at beer quality since forever, but they have made cost paring a science. Just today, a "popular" brand of "beer" simultaneously had its price raised and its strength lowered, a double whammy that would be more worthy of condemnation if I didn't believe that anyone who drinks it already deserves the contempt the brewers show them.

But this is happening all over, and I will try to guide you through what is happening. I may not tempt you to love beer as much as I do, but I hope I will open a window on a global industry.

Posted on Helen's behalf as she's too afflicted with flu to figure out why she is having problems posting.

since I promised to buy you a virtual beer, this seems like the place for it.

What'll you be having, and why? (in no less than 250 words)

Is this a thread or a link to Helen's blog?

And, if so, why start it when she's sick?  Am I missing something?

Do get better Helen.  We all miss you at Eurotrib.

Thank you for your wishes.

As this blog has been known for several months, I had prepared several essays for immediate publication. Naturally, come the day of launch, Colman suggested I have an intro; which this is.

The essays I have prepared I actually want to tweak a little but, due to flu, I am genuinely not capable of the concentration necessary to do the editing. So hopefully, this little place-marker will do to introduce everyone to what it will be about.

Really looking forward to this blog.

I drink an average of 2 small bottles of beer every year. When I'm very very thirsty. I can discuss gin if needed, and a number of other alcoholic beverages, but you won't get a peep out of me on beer.

However, I have always greatly enjoyed Helen writing on the subject of beer. Bravo!

Sorry for being dumb, but I'm not clear on how this is all meant to work. Is Helen the only person who can post here? If so (which is fine with me) then maybe there should be a weekly open post, may be on Monday, something like "My Weekend Beer Learnings." A place for general discussion of beer on topics not initiated by Helen, and allowing both comments and beer-related news stories.

Also I notice that that issue of the first paragraph in any posting is missing a line feed. I thought it was just me, but it's in Helen's post, too...

I don't know if you can post here, but a weekly open thread sounds like a worthy idea.

Still not out of the woods illness wise and I've had a less good couple of days

Ok so this weekend I will sacrifice and do a smallish beer experiment of some sort. Purely amateur level, though, as I don't actually know anything about beer beyond Guinness, Bass; Coors and Pacifico. Pedestrian tastes at best.
