Similar issues in the UK. Apparently the hidden hand of the market (which knows best) doesn't know how to make the much needed large numbers of housing for people on median or even low incomes.

It seems there is no commercial imperative to make housing for little profit. who knew?

And the in-thrall-to-the-widom-of-the-makets conservative governments we have in the anglosphere simply have no idea how to solve this problem.

The UK govt even talk about "affordable" housing, which is defined as costing 80% of normal market price. Which isn't a lot of help for somebody on £22k pa when the normal market price is about £1 million.

Bavaria's CSU tumbles to record low 1 week before election | DW |

With just over a week to go before a regional election, support for Bavaria's Christian Social Union (CSU) has a hit a record low of 33 percent, a poll published Thursday by German public broadcaster ARD showed.

The results were a drop of 2 percentage points for the CSU since last month. The ARD poll also showed that 52 percent of Bavarians are partially or entirely unsatisfied with the current CSU government.

The conservative party, only present in Bavaria, has been bleeding support over the past months due to voter dissatisfaction over its hard-line immigration policies and challenges from parties on both the left and right.

It has historically governed alone in Bavaria thanks to a typical vote share of around 50 percent. However, should the results of Bavaria's regional election on October 14 mirror Thursday's poll, the southern state would be headed for a coalition government -- a rarity in its post-World War II history that would also carry implications at the national political level.

Larry Elliott in The Guardian quotes from a study in The Lancet on Greece over the last decade:

"Many of the causes of death that increased in Greece are potentially responsive to care, including HIV, neoplasms, cirrhosis, neurological disorders, chronic kidney disease, and most types of cardiovascular disease. Improvements in child mortality in Greece have also stagnated since 2000, with increases in deaths due to neonatal haemolytic disease and neonatal sepsis since 2010, both of which might also reflect reduced health system performance."

Elliott comments:

The troika's austerity programme helped French and German banks avoid losses on their loans but at the expense of a rising Greek death rate. That has resulted in 50% less public hospital funding in 2015 than 2009, hospitals being left without basic supplies, the long-term unemployed stripped of their health insurance and those on low pay finding drugs more expensive because of a 20% cut in the minimum wage. The number of individuals with unmet healthcare needs has nearly doubled since 2010, with a considerable fraction reporting cost as the main reason for not receiving the recommended healthcare services.

(...)

For the past eight years, Greece has been used in a laboratory experiment to test out a theory. The evidence from the report in the Lancet could hardly be clearer. Austerity kills.

I have always suspected that there is an inverse relationship between the health of The City and the general economy. Somebody has run the numbers and proved it

Guardian - Nicholas Shaxton - The finance curse: how the outsized power of the City of London makes Britain poorer

Academics had worked out that many countries with abundant natural resources seemed to suffer from slower economic growth, more corruption, more conflict, more authoritarian politics and more poverty than their peers with fewer resources. (Some mineral-rich countries, including Norway, admittedly seem to have escaped the curse.) Crucially, this poor performance wasn't only because powerful crooks stole the money and stashed it offshore, though that was also true. The startling idea was that all this money flowing from natural resources could make their people even worse off than if the riches had never been discovered. More money can make you poorer: that is why the resource curse is also sometimes known as the Paradox of Poverty from Plenty.

Back in the 1990s, John Christensen was the official economic adviser to the British tax haven of Jersey. While I was writing about the resource curse in Angola, he was reading about it, and noticing more and more parallels with what he was seeing in Jersey. A massive financial sector on the tiny island was making a visible minority filthy rich, while many Jerseyfolk were suffering extreme hardship. But he could see an even more powerful parallel: the same thing was happening in Britain. Christensen left Jersey and helped set up the Tax Justice Network, an organisation that fights against tax havens. In 2007, he contacted me, and we began to study what we called the finance curse.

This will end the torture.
Kavanaugh Was Questioned by Police After Bar Fight in 1985
He's done.

Little known fact: My parents did not take me on a "college campus tour" when I was in high school. I applied blind to the schools that attempted to lure me based on my SAT scores. I got in early decision, 4-year scholarship. So the first opportunity to visit the cradle of iniquity was the spring of my graduation year. I got an invitation from Black Students' Association at Yale (BSAY) to attend an evening "gala" for entering black students. My parents sprang for air fare. Family friends in Stamford, CT, put me up, and the eldest son escorted me to the event.

I lost him in the "town-gown" melee that erupted at the event. Policed were summoned, and I placed myself in a squad car until my escort could be located. Lucky for me, he was neither bloodied nor arrested. Then he drove me back to Stamford. The incident was forgotten, and I returned home to Michigan. The End.

Fascinating anecdote, Cat...

As for the new development about Kavanaugh, I'll take your word for that this spells the end for him - I've become too cynical watching the news rolling out of the States, so when I read it prior to your comment I couldn't imagine this would do him in.

In my book, his final, overtly partisan testimony should've been enough to keep him off the bench of the Supreme Court - but then again, what do I know...

A foreign correspondent compared the (wider) political tribalization in the States to a boxing match: it's either a win or a lose by knock-out, no one is allowed to win anymore on points.

Yes, I can only echo Bjinse in believing that there simply isn't any accusation, or indeed any evidence, that could prevent the GOP from sending him to the USSC.

Everything we learn about this man should disqualify him from being the local park dog catcher. But that makes him the ideal person for Trump to force onto the USSC.

They have the House and the Senate. I simply don't believe that Collins, Flake and Murkowski will be allowed to hold things up, even if they really wanted to. However, being GOP peeps, I've always believed their reluctance was a head fake to keep the rubes back home fooled into believing they were human.

There's also a new rape charge. a young woman says she was offered a ride home, Have Nope driving, friend in back seat. He forcibly kissed here, exposed her breasts, and forced blowjob. his friend had her mouth covered from behind, and held her arm fest. Then they took here in the back seat and reaped her repeatedly. then he slapped her, and said, "Don't talk, no one will believe you."

The woman is anonymous, by letter to Senator K. Harris. The nominee was questioned about this by the Judiciary committee privately, denying all.

I still am not sure if this is enough to tip the scales. I am sure i can't believe i'm posting this news.

At this point the number of complaints submitted to the committee --and released to the public-- suggests to me a greater volume of "fan fiction" that's been discarded or filed for reference.

Where are the young women in this story?

Ownership or rental of "holiday" property is status symbol in the US as well as countries of Europe, you might agree. For middle-class families acquisition signifies financial stability. For upper-class families acquisition signifies stability and patronage. Both types express continuity of lineage in the location of this type of property, the "second-home," weekend home, or seasonal home(s). This is just one reason I immediately rejected inference about schism drawn by Gilens' and Page's from their own data.

My parents never owned a second home. My mother did enroll my brother and I in "summer camp" (local day) for many years. She paid the tuition from her earnings.

I learned in elementary school that families habitually congregate, because some whole families decamped from Grosse Point to Harbor Springs, MI, each summer.

In high school I learned there was greater diversity in "heritage" (inherited) holiday homes  and seasonal retreats. Family drives from Michigan to "open the house" in Vermont for winter, Cape Cod, MA for summer.

In college I became better acquainted with the range of wealth such property across New England entailed and the true meaning of "enclave," say, Naragansett, RI, to Westerly or Hyannis Port and The Vineyard to the whole of Cape Cod. Now, enclave is a word wrongly, nonsensically bandied about today as a synonym for "ghetto" --as if race segregation were no longer relevant to its meaning. It is common place in the USA today to find youngster speak as if ghetto housing were a voluntary life-style choice.

In college I also learned how students with disposable income spent it on "Spring Break". Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and [NAME A BAY] Jamaica were popular destinations for uh bacchanalia --the classes co-mingled but it's not my impression that races did. Women and men organized group accommodations, dormitory-like, and parties in advance. I understand, local hospitality organized events specifically to facilitate. I never went on these junkets, couldn't afford it even if I wanted to. I stayed on campus.

In the decade after graduation something of the same ritual lingered in weekend arrangements until everyone who wanted to be was married.

Diversity is the key to economic and political evolution.

We must supply our own TOWELS, sheets, pillow cases, blankets, etc.
Our problem down there might be too many people. We're going to have to decide while we are there who we want and don't want. Possibilities for stays of a few days or more are .... Feeley
If half of Gonzaga / St. Johns starts coming we might have to give the boot or else we might get it ourselves. I think we are unanimous that any girls we can beg to stay there are welcomed with open  . . . . Anyway I think we're all set. Remember that the eight of us are in charge - we get beds and we kick people out - no one else. The danger of eviction is great and that would suck because of the money and because this week has big potential. (Interpret as you wish).

Yes.

The immediate aim appears, literally, to remove "Elvis" from the building.

Consider how Trump's election to POTUS created a vocabulary to ascribe his personal attributes to any one, process, and thing, eg. Trumpian, Trumpistas, Trumpkins, pussy-grabbing epithets, and so forth: in short, elements of stereotype. Application of stereotype obviates identity within a group, even a system, sytems within systems (eg. "systemic" vs "systematic" semantics and rhetorical propositions). The obverse is true, too: Where there is one, there are many like (cockroach rule).

Trump contemporaneously provides the perfect symbol for the common sense of the FIFTH WAVE of "feminists" that conditions for domination are patent. Their political rivals are male and white. That is, rhetorical wealth satisfices representation of the "powers" any and all white males possess and urgent necessity to usurp the exclusive status it conveys ... if not to avenge the suffering of (AP style guide) "women and minorities" levied by patriarchy immemorial. Accordingly, all men are misogynists, a boundless invective, lately denoting theoretical and physical "sexual" assault reserved for "women". Whatever.

Associate Justice "Brett Kavanaugh" is yet another manifestation of divine intervention is the lives of mortal "women." There but not there. Believe.

Plaque riddles my brain, but I remember the night, not the date or specific time, and the people who went with me to retrieve our roommate from the campus police station (Phelps Gate) after she was tossed down a stairwell by her "lover." Yes, I saw her injuries. Yes, I did not actually see him do it. Yes, she told me and others later in the week that the dean of our residential college, a woman, had in a private meeting encouraged her to put this "sordid event" behind her.

BLOOMBERG EDITORIAL | This European Ruling Could Break the Internet
No. It couldn't.
Google is not the internet. Google is not a telecommunications owner/operator. Google does not assign URLs or domain addresses. The company maintains proprietary database tables of URLs like phone book publishers did of (residential and business) customers' "numbers" assigned to them by telecommunications owner/operators.
The right, enshrined in privacy law, allows Europeans to demand that information about them be removed from online search results if it's outdated, irrelevant or "excessive."
Standard TCP/IP "browser" software functionality includes storage and search of URLs ("bookmarks").
Just three places -- France, Germany and the U.K. -- generate 51 percent of all delisting requests, for instance, while Greeks barely assert the right all. In the U.S., enforcing the right could well be unconstitutional[?].
No. In the US persons are permitted by law to block publication by and sale of phone numbers to third-parties.

"We want to send a message that women who constitute half the population in those communities actually are used as weapons and that they need protection, and that the perpetrators have to be prosecuted and held responsible," said Berit Reiss-Andersen, chairwoman of the Norwegian committee.
Women and children are not weapons. They along with men are casualties of war. They are injured, not dead. The principle method of conducting war is to annihilate the enemy's population by whatever means available. The Noble foundation is saying that its learned inmates object to a particular means of annihilation, arbitrarily deemed a "war crime" among all other legitimate means of destruction.
The award comes amid heightened attention to sexual abuse of women in the workplace and socially, broadly referred to as the "#MeToo" movement.

"MeToo and war crimes is not quite the same thing, but they do however have in common that it is important to see the suffering of women," said Reiss-Andersen.

The award comes amid public attention to rapes, a "war crime," at the foundation by its officers. The treatment of and publicity afforded to casualties of war does not promote peace nor has it ended war anywhere.

"The message" this hall of knaves is broadcasting is, we're too embarrassed and craven to forego award of a peace prize this year.

The Noble Foundation's role is mainly taking care of the money. The actual prizes are handed out by different institutions, that only have in common that Alfred Nobel thought them suitable for the purpose. So the Peace prize is handed out by Stortinget - the Norwegian parliament - and the institution that won't be handing out a literature prize is the Swedish Academy in Stockholm.

And they won't hand out a literature prize, mainly because the MeToo allegations (that eventually lead to rape convictions) against somebody who is apparently a household name in cultural circles in Stockholm (but I had never heard about him before) brought up the dysfunctional way this 18th century institution works. So they had to pause everything and find out how to change the statutes. Which they now have. Apparently it included getting the King's approval.

"Silos" of knowledge and power within this organization, its hierarchy, are obscurely related to daily concerns of the mass of humanity.

I just think you should criticise the right organisations. And they are not silos within an organisation, they are different organisations, whose main task isn't - or shouldn't be - the Nobel prize, but legislation, research, etc. The different organisations that hand out the awards are not controlled by the foundation. So by all means criticise each committee for their choice of winners, and criticise the Nobel committee for investments (and letting the Economy prize in), but if you criticise the organisations make sure you target the right one.

If Bezo would drop dead tomorrow and it turns out that his will creates a foundation that will put up money for prizes to be awarded by the parliament of each of the UN security council veto states, that would not make them the same organisation. And neither does Nobel's will merge the pretty old institutions he gave sole power to hand out each prize.

Sarcasm is difficult to convey by text alone.

I hasten to add now that is my impression from correspondents at this address that criticism of elitists --particular individuals and groups-- is fashionable. Furthermore, elitist culture that express inherent superiority of individual merit and indutstry and, dare I say, nationalized moral imperative propelling their application to all things living and inert is evidently irredeemable.

"Democratization" of the authority that elites reward themselves is the ultimate rebuke of this age in all human history.

What I have clearly no understood is which elites are and which are not respectable exemplars upon which the mass of humanity ought to pattern their aspirations and meager talents. For fear these may be naturally wasted in debaucheries and godlessness.

Wind Power Isn't as Clean as We Thought It Was - Bloomberg
The simulations revealed that interactions of the turbines with the atmosphere would likely lead to a redistribution of heat in the lower atmosphere, resulting in a 0.54 degrees Celsius (0.97 degrees Fahrenheit) warming within the wind farms' region itself, and an increase of 0.24 degrees Celsius (0.43 degrees Fahrenheit) over the continental U.S.

Wind Power Isn't as Clean as We Thought It Was - Bloomberg

They also found that an expansive wind farm would need to operate for more than a century or so before the reduction of global carbon dioxide emissions would offset the local warming effect.

Why should it have to offset the local warming effect?

Wind and wave farms could affect Earth's energy balance By Mark Buchanan - March 30, 2011

How does the Earth system generate and maintain thermodynamic disequilibrium and what does it imply for the future of the planet?
by Dr Axel Kleidon - Max Planck Institute

Using a model of global circulation, Kleidon found that the amount of energy which we can expect to harness from the wind is reduced by a factor of 100 if you take into account the depletion of free energy by wind farms. It remains theoretically possible to extract up to 70 TW globally, but doing so would have serious consequences.

Although the winds will not die, sucking that much energy out of the atmosphere in Kleidon's model changed precipitation, turbulence and the amount of solar radiation reaching the Earth's surface. The magnitude of the changes was comparable to the changes to the climate caused by doubling atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (Earth System Dynamics, DOI: 10.5194/esd-2-1-2011).

"This is an intriguing point of view and potentially very important," says meteorologist Maarten Ambaum of the University of Reading, UK. "Human consumption of energy is substantial when compared to free energy production in the Earth system. If we don't think in terms of free energy, we may be a bit misled by the potential for using natural energy resources."

MeToo: A DNA test said a man was 4% black.
"I'm a certified black man," he told The Post. "I'm certified black in all 50 states. But the federal government doesn't recognize me."
[...]
"It is nonsensical for Mr. Taylor to claim that he has encountered social and economic disadvantage due to a heritage he was not aware of until the DNA test conducted in 2010," the state's letter said. Taylor was frustrated by the inconsistency -- how could he be a disadvantaged minority for the purpose of a state-level program but not a federal-level one? He decided to sue.
[...]
In November 2016, a district court judge in Tacoma dismissed the lawsuit, describing Taylor's focus on his genetic background as "misplaced." His attorneys appealed the ruling that month. Oral arguments are scheduled to take place before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in December.

Ideally, he says, he would like to see the minority-business certification process scrapped and replaced with a program that would be based on socioeconomic status, not race. ... Taylor says that his lawsuit, now four years in the making, is entirely self-funded. He told the Seattle Times this month that he had spent up to $300,000 so far but declined to confirm that exact figure when speaking with The Post on Monday.

We don't need many more indicators that we're living in a late-capitalist hell of our own making. From paying four hundred dollars for juice to tracking our children under the guise of a fun toy, it's painfully evident that the merge of tech, data, and happy-go-lucky branding is making modern life more dystopian by the day. And nothing embodies that spirit of dread more than the new coffee shop, Shiru Cafe, in Providence, Rhode Island. Shiru is a coffee shop built exclusively for students and staff at Brown University that does not require students to pay for their coffee.

While this initially sounds like a wonderfully altruistic endeavour to be kind to overworked students, there is, of course, a heinous catch. In exchange for a free coffee, students must handover swathes of personal information, from their date of birth to their phone number to their personal and professional interests. After providing this information, students must permit corporate sponsors to get in touch with them via phone or email to send them targeted advertising based on their submitted personal data. Sponsors range from banks to tech giants to car companies.

And here's how the company describes it themselves in "English".
SHIRU CAFE® has its own business model that have never showed up in the café business before. SHIRU CAFE® is run by sponsor contract fee from company in global and serve students a free drink. Through a free drink we try to give students some information which sponsor company would like to inform exclusively for university students to diverse the choices of their future career.

In a textbook example of too little too late, the Prussian parliament finally agrees to almost equal suffrage, the almost being that people over 50 would get an extra vote. I've forgotten whether this abortive reform includes women's suffrage and the NYT either doesn't know or doesn't think it important enough to inform us about. Kaiser Wilhelm, in his letter accepting Chancellor Count Georg von Hertling's resignation, claims to be moving towards democracy: "I desire that the German people cooperate in a more effectual manner than hitherto in the task of deciding the destiny of the country." He suggests that his new cabinet will include some actual Socialists, you know, the largest party in the Reichstag, and you know how much Willy must haaaaaate that.

Male physicians treating Female patients: Issues, Controversies and Gynecology, 2011

In addition, it was during this period ["early 1800s"] that the use of a chaperone became a part of the clinical examination. The chaperone's role was to emotionally support and reassure the patient during a procedure that she found embarrassing or uncomfortable. The chaperone also acted as a witness in cases of malfeasance by the physician. Today, in many parts of the world where religious and cultural precepts often discourage female encounters with male physicians, chaperones still attend gynecological examinations.
Regression in standards of clinical competence attributable to etiquette and, probably, aversion to sex education in the USA. Ominous headlines about "misconduct" and "informed consent" have been a recurring theme in MSM reporting for several decades, student pelvic exam practice with patients and the "psychological stress" of involuntary self-examination.

Little known fact: I've been female for a pretty long time. It was my habit since age 18 to take an annual, routine gynecological exam until age 40 or so. All of these were two-party, myself and the MD (always female). Recently (53) I sought to resume the service at two different "family" clinics. On both occasions I was informed that protocol required an observer. Both persons were female. The scariest aspect of the examination were changes to procedures--clinical criteria of a "thorough" exam--and in one instance the practical ineptitude of the "gynecologist" --someone incapable of inserting a speculum into my vaginal canal with my expressed consent.

Elon Musk quietly donates $480K to help Flint, MI schools get access to clean water
The UV water purification method within the filtration systems will disinfect lead and bacteria coming from water pipes, allowing students in Flint to safely drink from school water fountains once more. Flint school board president Diana Wright thanked the Musk Foundation for its donation, stating that it ensures that "students in Flint Community Schools have access to safe drinking water at the source -- in drinking fountains -- by way of the same type of water filtration system used by hospitals and colleges in Flint."
