The World According to Dutch FM Halbe Zijlstra

by Oui Mon Feb 12th, 2018 at 12:44:24 PM EST

Dutch PM Mark Rutte has been on the roll with accusations of Russian disinformation about the MH-17 crash, election meddling and fake news through RT. It took awhile to form a new cabinet after last year's general election, his party nominated its chairman for the task of Foreign Minister. Someone with no experience in diplomacy and foreign affairs. Except of course his meeting with Russia's president Putin in his dacha. Well more or less ...

Dutch Parliament to Question Zijlstra's Credibility | De Volkskrant |

Dutch parliament wants clarification of Zijlstra about Putin's invented meeting. Rutte: 'He is still credible'

Both coalition and opposition parties want clarification from Minister Halbe Zijlstra of Foreign Affairs about his fabricated contacts with Russia. D66, CDA and ChristenUnie want a letter with an explanation to the House of Representatives. Several opposition parties want to quickly debate with Zijlstra, who today in de Volkskrant confesses that since 2014 he has told a fake story about a meeting with the Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Zijlstra lied about talking to Putin: 'I pushed it away because it got the wrong charge'

"Was it wise to protect the source in the way that I did it? No, that was unwise. But the information is correct."

No, he has never sat in one room with Putin, as he has always claimed, Halbe Zijlstra now acknowledges. He would have heard his words from a source he wants to protect. "And the content is just true."

More below the fold ...

Opposition: Zijlstra is not credible

The PVV wants to get the minister of foreign affairs to the test before traveling to Moscow on Tuesday evening for a meeting with his counterpart Sergei Lavrov. "Debate necessary with Foreign Affairs Minister about his lie. Debate has to take place before he meets Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs," says PVV foreign spokesperson Raymond de Roon.

PVV leader Geert Wilders blames Zijlstra for spreading fake news, while the Dutch government accuses the Russians of this: "The information comes from the Dutch VVD Minister of Foreign Affairs. The pot blames the kettle that it's black," according to Wilders on Twitter.

...
Thierry Baudet of Forum for Democracy wants Zijlstra to resign: 'Lying as if it were printed. Unbelievable that this kind of people control our country. Baudet tweeted. `Halbe Zijlstra as a textbook example of the pleonasm `Liegende VVD-er'. Halbe, you first go to the #nep news police @KajsaOllongren and then quickly resign."

Zijlstra admits faking story about Putin's 'greater Russia' ambitions | Dutch News |

Foreign affairs minister Halbe Zijlstra has admitted lying about being at a meeting where Vladimir Putin supposedly set out his plans for a `Greater Russia'.

Zijlstra claimed that he had overheard the Russian president talking about his expansionist ambitions during a gathering of businesspeople at Putin's dacha in 2006. At the time Zijlstra was working for Shell. But in an interview in the Volkskrant at the weekend he admitted that he had not been at the meeting, but `borrowed' the anecdote from someone whose identity he wanted to protect.

'I made the decision that this is an important geopolitical story with serious implications,' he said. `I put myself in the story to make sure that the revelations weren't about the person who was actually there. Because that could have had implications for him or his company.'

In his original version of the story, which Zijlstra began relating at VVD party conferences in 2014, he claimed he had been a back room in the dacha when he heard Putin define 'Greater Russia' as 'Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and the Baltic states,' adding that 'Kazakhstan was nice to have'.

Doubts about the veracity of the foreign minister's claims came to light when former senior Shell executive Jeroen van der Veer told the Volkskrant that Zijlstra had not been at the meeting in 2006. Zijlstra admitted he was not present but insisted that the substance of the story was true.

'New Russia' And Ukraine

The Kremlin's new position has come into sharp focus in recent weeks in the Ukrainian region of Crimea -- annexed by Russia last month -- and in the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine. Russian nationalists such as the Eurasianist ideologue Aleksandr Dugin refer to this region by the historical name "Novorossiya," or "New Russia," which also encompasses several southern regions of Russia including Rostov Oblast and Stavropol and Krasnodar krais.

The area was added to the Russian Empire over the 18th and early 19th centuries by military conquests over the Crimean Khanate and the Ottoman Empire. Beginning with Catherine the Great, the fertile region was handed out to Russian nobility who enserfed the local population. Although Catherine notably invited foreigners from Europe to settle in the region, Russification of the region was official policy.

I suppose the Dutch military wanted to make amends after their role in the Serbian conflict and the massacre of Srebrenica.

The Dutch government led by PM Rutte has spoken with Washington’s voice on the Ukraine and has pushed aside the result of a people’s legitimate referendum on Ukraine. The new cabinet of Rutte will abolish the people’s referendum.

Dutch FM admits lying about Putin describing land-grab ambitions in 2006 | RT |

Dutch Foreign Minister Halbe Zijlstra has admitted that he lied when he claimed to have heard President Vladimir Putin describing an ambition to unify Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states and Kazakhstan as a single country.

Zijlstra claimed at a party conference in 2016 that he had overheard Putin outlining the grand plan for a "Greater Russia" in 2006 during a gathering of businessmen. He was working for the oil company, Shell, at the time.

In the original retelling of the story, Zijlstra said he had been in a back room of a dacha (country house) when he heard Putin define "Great Russia" as "Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and the Baltic states," adding that "Kazakhstan was nice to have."

The story was questioned by the newspaper Volkskrant, however, which discovered from Zijlstra's colleagues that he had not been at the 2006 business meeting in Russia, despite being part of the Shell delegation. When confronted about this, the minister acknowledged lying and claimed he was simply trying to protect a source.

"I made the decision that this is an important geopolitical story with serious implications," he said. "I put myself in the story to make sure that the revelations weren't about the person who was actually there. Because that could have had implications for him or his company."

Zijlstra insisted the hearsay of which he spoke was true, but would not name the person from whom he heard it. The newspaper itself says the source was Jeroen van der Veer, who was Shell CEO at the time, citing two informed sources.

"Greater Russia" is an amorphous term usually used to describe the historic core of the Russian state, roughly corresponding to the territory of medieval Russia in the 16th century - the beginning of the reign of Ivan the Terrible, who was the first of Russia's great expansionist rulers. The word "greater" is meant as a description of spiritual significance rather than physical size. The same term was applied to the core territories of some other countries, like Greater Armenia, Greater Walachia or Greater Poland.

Dutch foreign minister under pressure over Putin lie, papers say he must go | Dutch News |

Editorials The Financieele Dagblad heads its editorial 'The end of Zijlstra'. 'If Zijlstra is allowed to remain the credibility of this cabinet will be compromised. Not only would it invalidate any criticism of Russia, it would also damage the campaign against fake news. For the future of the coalition and the prestige of politics it would be better if Zijlstra left.'

The Volkskrant says Zijlstra 'twisted Putin's words, first to make himself look important, then to save his skin'. According to the paper, Zijlstra's 'fake story made him vulnerable to blackmail by the Russians who knew what really happened', the paper writes.

The Volkskrant is also critical of Zijlstra's fellow politicians. Now that he has confessed 'the coalition wagon trail has formed a circle' so as not to endanger the fledgling coalition.'

The Volkskrant says the cabinet and prime minister Rutte are 'oblivious of the impact of this lying and prevaricating'. Rutte himself is now vulnerable because he accused the Russians of lying several times in the MH17-file which he has repeatedly says is a priority. Loyalty to political friends is a virtue but the interests of the country come first,' the Volkskrant concludes.

Russian fake news a threat to Netherlands: Interior Minister | NL Times - Nov. 14, 2017 |

Fake news is a deep concern for the new Netherlands cabinet, and its suppression is a priority in the Dutch cabinet, a new letter sent to parliamentarians shows. Russia deserves much of the blame for a disinformation campaign in the Netherlands, Interior Minister Kajsa Ollongrenhas clearly states in a brief to the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament.

"Netherlands finds itself in the sights of Russian intelligence, among others," writes the new cabinet minister. Ollongrenhas is since a few weeks in office after serving as an alderman and interim-mayor in Amsterdam. She does not exclude other countries as being responsible for spreading fake news and propaganda. "Of this country we know it, but we don't have to think that it is only Russia".

The minister will deal with the spread of fake news directly with companies such as Facebook, Google and Twitter, she says. It is also demonstrates part of the need for the 95 million euros budgeted to bolster cybersecurity and cyberdefense in the Netherlands, including money for counter-terrorism, military intelligence, and the Ministries of Defense, Economic Affiars, Foreign Affairs, and Infrastructure, Public Works & Water Management, the cabinet says in a press release.

Комментарий Департамента информации и печати МИД России в связи с рабочим визитом в Российскую Федерацию Министра иностранных дел Нидерландов Х.3ейлстры

Russian MFA Information and Press Department Commentary Regarding the Working Visit to the Russian Federation of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands Halbe Zijlstra.

On February 14, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, H. Zailstra, will pay a working visit to the Russian Federation. This is his first visit to Russia since his appointment as Foreign Minister in October 2017. The Netherlands is one of the few EU countries that has pursued a policy of limiting bilateral contacts with Russia through government members, with the exception of meetings of foreign ministers.

Russian-Dutch relations are overshadowed by the unprecedented anti-Russian campaign unleashed in the Dutch media, the bias of the Netherlands-led investigation into the wreck of the Malaysian Boeing in 2014 in eastern Ukraine, the decision of the Tribunal in the case of Arctic Sunrise, the unjust verdict of the Amsterdam court on the transfer of the exhibits "Crimea - a golden island in the Black Sea" to Ukraine, and not to Crimean museums.

At the same time, the importance of preserving channels for dialogue through the heads of foreign affairs agencies is beyond doubt. During the upcoming talks between Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov and Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs H. Zijlstra, it is planned to discuss the state of affairs in bilateral Russian-Dutch relations, which have been difficult to develop in recent years.

In 2018 the Netherlands took the place of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. The issues related to the agenda of this important international body are of interest to both countries for possible interaction.

...
Over the years, the Netherlands has been an important economic partner of Russia. Nevertheless, due to the sanctions confrontation, the volume of trade fell significantly, and the Netherlands moved from the second to the third place among the main trade and economic partners of Russia ($ 32.2 billion). In recent decades, significant direct Dutch investments in the Russian Federation (42.5 billion US dollars) have been accumulated.

Despite the official line of The Hague, Dutch business is interested in developing cooperation with our country. In 2017, the 125th anniversary of the beginning of the Russian oil and gas company Shell, which today is the largest foreign investor in our economy, is participating in the Nord Stream-2, Baltic LNG and Sakhalin-2 projects.

In 2017, the Dutch-British concern Unilever, whose products are in great demand in our country, celebrated the 25th anniversary of its work in Russia. Unilever products are produced on the territory of Russia on the basis of 4 large production clusters: food products and ice cream in the Tula region, tea, cosmetic products and household chemicals in St. Petersburg, cosmetics in Yekaterinburg and ice cream in Omsk.

Concern "Philips" is involved in the modernization of Russian enterprises for the production of medical equipment.

Cultural and humanitarian ties are developing. In January 2018, in the territory of the Herede municipalities and the Oulst Veye Kingdom of the Netherlands, a ceremony was held to present a monument to Russian soldiers who liberated Holland from Napoleonic troops in 1813.

The museum "Hermitage Amsterdam", which is a branch of the State Hermitage Museum, continues its work. Currently, there is an exhibition "Dutch masters. Treasures of the Kings "(63 works from Russia).

Dutch foreign minister resigns after lying about Putin meeting | DW |

The announcement came before he was due to be grilled in parliament.

Foreign Affairs Minister Halbe Zijlstra announced his resignation Tuesday, saying the hit to his credibility made staying in the role untenable.

"I see no other option today than to hand in my resignation to his majesty the King," a tearful Zijkstra told MPs in parliament. "The Netherlands deserves a minister who is above any doubt."

"This is by far the biggest mistake I have made in my career."

The foreign minister had faced growing calls from the opposition to step down after conceding Monday that he fibbed about being a guest at a gathering hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin over a decade ago.

The Netherlands is spreading anti-Russian sentiment, The Hague embassy says

The Russian embassy in The Hague has condemned the way perceptions of Russia are being twisted in Dutch public opinion, in its first comment on foreign minister Halbe Zijlstra's admission that he lied about a meeting with president Vladimir Putin. Zijlstra has been under fire since admitting on Monday that he lied about overhearing Putin define 'Greater Russia' as 'Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and the Baltic states,' then adding that 'Kazakhstan was nice to have'.

In a two page English statement, the embassy says it considers Zijlstra's comments as a domestic matter. It then goes on to say 'we cannot ignore how perceptions of Russia's aggressive intentions are being persistently propagated in Dutch public opinion.' `The attempts to attribute to Russia "great-power ambitions" and the desire to recreate "the Soviet Empire" do not hold up against any criticism,' the statement said.
