Utopia a City w/o Jews - Austria 1924

by Oui Wed Mar 21st, 2018 at 10:35:49 AM EST

An Austrian film thought lost, found in a flea market in France in 2015. Through crowdfunding completely restored and will be shown in Vienna. The relevance to our world today needs not be explained.

Die Stadt ohne Juden (Wikipedia)

Die Stadt ohne Juden (The City Without Jews) is an 1924 Austrian Expressionist film by H. K. Breslauer, based on the book of the same title by Hugo Bettauer. The film is one of the few surviving Expressionist films from Austria and has therefore been well researched. The film was first shown on 25 July 1924 in Vienna.

In his novel, published in 1922, Hugo Bettauer succeeded in creating a relatively accurate allegorical vision of the near future, although the book was intended as entertainment and as a satirical response to the primitive antisemitism of the 1920s. It immediately became Bettauer's most popular work: it was translated into several languages, and sold over a quarter of a million copies.

More below the fold ...

Shortly after the premiere of the film Hugo Bettauer was murdered by Otto Rothstock, a former member of the Nazi Party, who was lionized by the antisemitic Austrian masses and was released from jail shortly after his conviction for murder.

"At his trial, Rothstock justified what he had done as necessary to
save German culture from the menace of Jewish degeneration.

In today's local election for council seats in The Netherlands, numerous parties have based their party program on the populist slogan: "Save the culture of The Netherlands." PM Mark Rutte as a prima donna of cowardice leading the pack of wolves. I'm completely at a loss the the Christian Democrats leader Sybrand van Haersma Buma has a pitched voice in a similar chant in recent years. So ashamed of intolerance inside Holland.

When Visiting Amsterdam

Need Some Love @JerusalemPost

In a very nice article over the Jewish heritage in "My" Amsterdam, some guy from California made a political comment.  Not realizing JPost readers could come from red-neck districts, I replied. Last time I checked the likes-dislikes were evenly divided. Link to JPost article here. Not bad in a paper that let Caroline Glick communicate her opinion about President Obama and Democrats.

Friedberg from California wrote this in an earlier comment:

"... most Americans believe a black man could do just as good a job as president as a white one."
Don't care if Obama is black or green. He has only succeeded in making Jimmy Carter, another anti-Semite,
look like a competent president. That act comes close to the coming of the Meshiach.

I forgot to mention that it's also being shown in the Philharmonie de Paris next year. That's how I became aware of it and tracked it down on youtube.

Not accessible due to copyright violations. Which sounds impossible for a movie from 1924, but there you go.

Might be an automatic algorithm of the kind that the EP is mulling if every platform should be mandated to have.

Here's one that seems to work, with German and Spanish titles. Download your copy in case this one disappears as well.

Copyright is presumably based on the death of the director (and maybe the other performers), not the year on the movie, but the Nazis solved that problem in 1925.

BBC coverage of lost film ...

'Lost' film predicting rise of Nazism returns to screen

An Orthodox Jew is set upon by three taunting men.

A woman shopping at a market stall becomes outraged at the high prices. She starts pelting a passing Jewish man with fruit.

Later, huge protesting crowds gather outside the chancellor's office. Inside, the leader consults with an adviser. "It is awful to expel the Jews," he says. "But one must satisfy the people."

The incidents portrayed in the Austrian film The City Without Jews (Die Stadt Ohne Juden) are eerily prophetic.

It was made nearly 20 years before the Holocaust, at a time when the Nazi party was banned in Austria, and when Adolf Hitler was in jail in Germany, working on his book Mein Kampf.
'Growing anti-Semitism'

The film tells the story of a city that expels all of its Jews. They are made the scapegoats for rising prices and unemployment.

It is based on a dystopian, satirical novel by the Austrian Jewish writer and journalist, Hugo Bettauer.

'Growing relevance'

Nikolaus Wostry says the movie should be considered "one of the strongest anti-Nazi-statements of the silent film period".

In the film, after the Jews leave, the city celebrates with fireworks. But life soon gets worse. International trade and the economy suffer, and the city's beloved cafes get turned into simple beer halls.

The chancellor eventually invites the Jews back home. Lovers and mixed Christian and Jewish families are reunited.

"It is a statement against excluding people on the grounds of their religion or race from society and has in this respect a growing relevance again for our time," says Mr Wostry.
