In case anyone still pays attention to the state of Austria's opposition: The current leader of the sort of vanity splinter of the Green party, called Liste Pilz after its founder, seems to have left the party. That follows on the party founder refusing the mandate over sexual harassment claims. Meanwhile the main party failed to enter parliament and their former leader Eva Glawishnig got a gig at gamble conglomerate Novartis, very public enemy #1 of the party, shortly before an important state election.
You could think there was a bit of a conspiracy going on if you were of the paranoid mindset. The prospect of a politically organized left looks incredibly remote at a time when the conservatives prepare to go full Thatcher and the far right controls police, army and secret services.

OK, apparently that wasn't quite correct. Peter Kolba will not leave the party. Him stepping down from the leadership position is not really unexpected since he only took over when their founder unexpectedly didn't enter parliament.
Maybe someone is spreading malicious rumors.

It's all pretty dire. Short answer: no. Long answer: Also no. The Soc-Dems are settled with a liberal party leader, in both the market and other sense of the word, with convictions that run as deep as a puddle. All the embarrassingly offensive and bad laws we got in the last few months of the coalition had to have his OK. And after the CETA turnabout I don't see how you can take anything coming from Soc-Dem central seriously. They are also settled with a federal structure and at least one state organisation that you can count for the far-right without being too far off. All this will not change since the dearth of other options leads to OK results at the polls.
The Green successor party has no activists and no real party structure. It is basically only a handful of people sitting in parliament so it isn't entirely clear for what you would even be signing up if you intended to join.
There is also a well funded neoliberal party that calls itself "NEOs" with admirable honesty, that gets to play the defender of civil liberties.
That's basically all for opposition in Parliament.
I also looked in on the local DIEM chapter. Certainly quite a number of well-meaning people but seems still very far from being in a state to contest elections.
There are also the communists who have recently snapped up the Green Party Youth. Didn't help them last election and I see no real life signs from them.
Just for an honourable mention: I also looked up what the local anti-fa was up to (on Twitter) and a lot of them seem pretty concerned about BDS. ???

Windrush generation treatment 'appalling' - BBC News

The home secretary has apologised for the treatment of the Windrush generation, saying it was "wrong" and "appalling" that some face deportation.

Many immigrants who arrived from the Commonwealth decades ago as children have been told they are here illegally.

Amber Rudd said they would be helped to attain required documents for free and added she was concerned her department "sometimes loses sight" of individuals.

Labour's David Lammy said it was a "day of national shame".

(...)

Thousands of people arrived in the UK as children in the first wave of Commonwealth immigration 70 years ago.

They are known as the Windrush generation - a reference to the ship, the Empire Windrush, that brought workers from the West Indies to Britain in 1948.

Under the 1971 Immigration Act, all Commonwealth citizens already living in the UK were given indefinite leave to remain.

However, the Home Office did not keep a record of those granted leave to remain or issue any paperwork confirming it, meaning it is difficult for the individuals to now prove they are in the UK legally.

Changes to immigration law in 2012, which requires people to have documentation to work, rent a property or access benefits, including healthcare, has highlighted the issue and left people fearful about their status.

Britain says regrets role in anti-gay laws among former colonies
Speaking on the second day of a week-long meeting in London, May addressed a wide range of humanitarian and environmental issues, including laws which outlaw same-sex activity in 37 of its 53 member nations.

"I am all too aware that these laws were often put in place by my own country. They were wrong then and they are wrong now," May said.

May herself apologised over the harsh treatment of the so-called "Windrush generation," whose parents were invited to Britain

Richard Guthrie and Iraq War

Dr Richard Guthrie, an expert in chemical warfare at Sussex University, argues that due to the fact that no pathological evidence exists linking depleted uranium to birth defects, a more likely cause for this increase in birth defects was the Iraqi Army's use of mustard agents during its war with Iran.

From your CWB Events link ... I found this summary on Novichok basically in error. Not just because it was quite brief.

Why aren't Novichoks and their precursors on the CWC schedules? When the Schedules were put together in the early 1990s, the Russian government refused to confirmed whether the Novichok family of compounds existed. At the time there were also concerns that scientists and engineers from weapons programmes of the USSR might find gainful employment in other countries, causing further proliferation problems. For example, significant funds were put into place by Western governments to establish the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC) in Moscow (moved to Astana some years later) and the Science and Technology Centre Ukraine (STCU) to find work for scientists and engineers that reduce proliferation concerns. In addition there were concerns that the CWC needed to be put into operation as quickly as possible to get the destruction of declared chemical weapons underway. In the circumstances at the time, the Novichoks seemed to be a less important issue and so they remained on the back burner.

That's why I searched for the author and found Richard Guthrie from Sussex University. Certainly an expert on CWB, but with strings attached? He is no David Kelly who helped dismantle the Soviet stockpiles.

Sure, there is certainly a risk of overreacting and going pro Russia, humans in general seem to have trouble when more than two options are on the table.
But everyone lying doesn't equal Russia did it, either.
What I find most irritating about the Russia panic is that in most cases, even if the worst accusations are true, the proposed solutions are worse. Russian bots? Deputize the corporations that run all channels of communication to censor political expression. Syria killed a bunch of people with poison gas instead of shrapnel and white phosphorous like a civilized country, in violation of its OCW commitments? Bomb the country in a clear violation of the UN charter.

Sure. In this case, it seems most likely to me that Russia was responsible, in the sense of it was someone important based in Russia that did it.

There's no doubt that the whole situation suits politicians on all sides. Toothless diplomatic sanctions, ritual air strikes, distract from the fundamental failings of UK/US political systems by focusing on minor effects of Russian based interventions.

Given the facts as presented some Russian involvement seems likely. However, I've not seen anyone come up with the answer what the guy was up to in the last 20 years. Maybe he made a whole new set of enemies. Also, as far as I know there was already a Novichok murder in 1994 Russia.
by generic on Fri Apr 20th, 2018 at 01:12:14 AM EST
[ Parent ]
OK, that was even more garbled than usually. What I wanted to point out is that 1: There was apparently already a Novichok use in Russia:

wiki

The forerunner of Novichok agents, substance-33 (frequently also referred to simply as "Novichok")[64] has been reportedly used in 1995 to poison Russian banker Ivan Kivelidi (ru), the head of the Russian Business Round Table, and Zara Ismailova, his secretary.[65][66][67][68][69] According to historians Yuri Felshtinsky and Vladimir Pribylovsky, the murder became "one of the first in the series of poisonings organized by Russia's security services". The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs analyzed the substance and announced that it was "a phosphorus-based military-grade nerve agent"[70] "whose formula was strictly classified".[70]

So we know that someone in Russia used something like it in domestic disputes.

The second point I wanted to make is that ex-spies tend to get mixed up in shade stuff as a matter of course. Litvinenko was also only one degree of separation away from basically every shady story that went on at the time. I think deGondi had a story about this at the time? So while it is a reasonable assumption that some of his ex-colleagues want to murder him for what he did decades ago, someone should ask questions about what he was mixed up with in the recent past.

Also this, though the link to the original source is missing.

temp

But the official Russian forensic investigation in conjunction with the Kivelidi's murder, as reported by Novaya Gazeta, concluded that the Novichok did not take effect instantaneously but generally took from one and a half to five hours.

If true that is one weird ass nerve gas.

British PM May dealt embarrassing Brexit defeat in parliament's upper house
By a vote of 348 to 225, the Lords, from all parties, supported an amendment to her Brexit blueprint, the EU withdrawal bill, requiring ministers to report what efforts they had made to secure a customs union by the end of October.

It does not explicitly say Britain must reach a deal on such a union and Brexit campaigners called it a ploy to embolden EU supporters in the lower house of parliament to press their case for May to reverse her position and back a customs union.

Let there be no doubt. The link (above) is to the text of the joint resolution, introduced by Mr Corker on 16 April 2018. That is before and certainly not in anticipation of Mssrs Macron's and Trump's requited love of war, or "intervention" if one prefers. Mr Corker's work is but one of 165 bills currently related to AUMF powers although one might not aware be of that, given cataracts annealed to the lenses of Anglo-merican "journalists" and petit historians from other lands ("think tanks") through which some rely for sight. It has attracted only five co-sponsors yet attained prominent display --insofar as any bill might in recent headlines.

Its code is S.J.Res.59. Its short title is "Authorization for Use of Military Force of 2018."

This resolution renews and amends --or "modernizes"  M Macron style-- prior AUMF legislation granting unitary authorities to prosecute war on anyone, anywhere to the executive office since September 14, 2001 (S.J.Res. 23, 107th session of The Odious). I for one cannot recall who was or were Mr Trump's concubine(s) at the time. To those who believe Macron is a "liberal": think again.

Don't be fooled by Emmanuel Macron the `moderate' - Owen Jones - Guardian

Another pillar of his agenda is privatisation, including of France's airports and part of the national energy utility. His confrontation with rail workers is seen as an attempt to lay the foundations for a catastrophic British-style privatisation of the railway industry. EU-mandated deregulation will mean foreign companies can soon compete with the state rail company SNCF, and Macron is transforming it from a state enterprise into a limited company; exactly what happened with the formerly state-owned France Télécom.

So-called centrists are supposed to be socially liberal. Macron exposes this pernicious myth for what it is. A man who courted left-leaning voters by promising a humane policy towards migrants and refugees now has them firmly in his sights. The number of days a person without papers can be imprisoned in a detention centre is to be doubled; the consideration time period for asylum has been halved, meaning fewer refugees will be accepted. Charities warn that refugees fleeing war will be deported. Macron's interior minister, Gérard Collomb, claims that communities are "breaking up because they are overwhelmed by the inflow of asylum seekers". No wonder the far-right Front National has described his policies as a "political victory".

tbh, I've probably hung around here too much, but I never understood this "liberal" romance with Macron.

It's kinda like the "Obama wins peace prize for not being George bush" thing; embarrassing in hindsight as the drones rain fire on Pakistan and Syria while everybody wonders what they were thinking, but t least it was understandable how he fooled us.

Macron is an amateur compared to either Bill C or Obama, or even Blair for that matter. For starters he's NOT a liberal, not even pretending he was one. Like Justin Trudeau, he's young but he's a conservative. C'mon guys, the lcue is in the name. The only way Macron was good looking is cos he was running against an actual nazi.

But now that's over, and he's still a conservative, which means fucking everything up on behalf of corporatations and the rich. Which is what he said he'd do

The usual weekly earnings for a black worker at the 75th percentile of the distribution was 56 percent higher than the median earnings in the first quarter of 2018. If we assume that the gap is linear (i.e. moving up five percentage points in the wage distribution closes the gap between the 75th percentile and 50th percentile by one fifth)...

The Republican Party is organised around one man - The Economist

ALL presidents, Republican and Democrat, seek to remake their party in their own image. Donald Trump has been more successful than most. From the start, the voters he mesmerised in the campaign embraced him more fervently than congressional Republicans were ready to admit. After 15 months in power, as our briefing explains, he has taken ownership of their party. It is an extraordinary achievement from a man who had never lived in Washington, DC, never held public office, who boasted of groping women and who, as recently as 2014, was a donor to the hated Democrats.

The organising principle of Mr Trump's Republican Party is loyalty. Not, as with the best presidents, loyalty to an ideal, a vision or a legislative programme, but to just one man--Donald J. Trump--and to the prejudice and rage which consume the voter base that, on occasion, even he struggles to control. In America that is unprecedented and it is dangerous.

(...)

At the heart of his system of power is his contempt for the truth. In a memoir published this week (see Lexington) James Comey, whom Mr Trump fired as director of the FBI, laments "the lying about all things, large and small, in service to some code of loyalty that put the organisation above morality and above the truth". Mr Trump does not--perhaps cannot--distinguish between facts and falsehoods. As a businessman and on the campaign he behaved as if the truth was whatever he could get away with. And, as president, Mr Trump surely believes that his power means he can get away with a great deal.

When power dominates truth, criticism becomes betrayal. Critics cannot appeal to neutral facts and remain loyal, because facts are not neutral. As Hannah Arendt wrote of the 1920s and 1930s, any statement of fact becomes a question of motive.

...20. The conspiracy constituted an act of previously unimaginable treachery: the campaign of the presidential nominee of a major party in league with a hostile foreign poser to bolster its own chance to win the Presidency. And, in carrying out this effort, Defendants conspriered to disseminate documents stolen from the DNC in violation of the laws of the United States, as wll as the laws of the State of Virginia and the District of Columbia. 1. Federal rules of civil procedure enumerate the many means ("motions to") available to advocates of either party to petition the the court for intermediate review of facts (evidence) and law before and during proceedings. Anyway, both parties have to present upon filing an intial list of evidence and witnesses intended for admission by the parties and the court to trial. Pre-trial hearings when the litany of motions occur and determine adversaries' legal strategy at trial is not of much interest to gossip columnists.

  2. Which emails? Some "stolen" DNC email are in the public domain and presumably also stored by defendant Wikileaks. Some correspondence among and between the parties, plaintiff (DNC Services Corp., d/b/a DNC) and defendants, are not in the public domain. Discovery of that material, pursuant to conspiracy to steal and disseminate [?] contraband, may be of particular interest to defendants who are US nationals otherwise preoccupied by defense of criminal charges intimately related to the DNC's spurious petition for relief, or excuse from participation in any "conspiracy" to "leak" private parts. I for one don't expect foreign nationals to respond to this complaint ... in court. On the other hand, the first motion I would file for a foreign national is to Strike, Sever, or Try Separately mine from wtf. I also do not expect either party or the court to subpoena material evidence or witnesses identified by FBI investigation into the matter or grand jury indictments obtained by "special" prosecutor. After all, witnesses key to plaintiff's allegations of any and all conspiracy between domestic and foreign agents have been referred to DOJ for criminal prosecution by certain congressional representatives. After all, the caucus agreed to suppress "classified" material, and the DNC refused FBI forensic examination of electronic transmission logs.

  3. Mr Cohen, an ambiguous character like Mr Michael Eisenkraft who filed the DNC complaint, appears to be the front for a number of Big Law firms periodically retained by a unnamed partisan figures or corporations. Law blogs hint. Given the circumstances surrounding the recent FBI "raid" of Cohen's "privileges", I suspect, the DNC will be at pains to suppress US national defendants' discovery of any participation by counsel in arms-length or concerted acts "to fix" clients' liabilities in ancillary breaches of duty over prior 2 years, eg. W-Schultz, R-Clinton, Comey, Clapper, Welding vs.

As citations in the complaint and previous minority reports on House Intelligence Committee investigation suggest, litigation of "facts" will never "probe" deeper press reportage already published.

Because the caucus has succeeded in obtaining $630M in the US FY budget from the majority to "monitor" mid-term electoral operations, it seems to be that this complaint is merely an extension of the DNC political advertising campaign since '15. However, what remains in the sawdust of this two ring circus is the DNC prosecution of a free press, not "fake news".

I detect a diction problem.

Perhaps the writer intended to make a distinction in meanings between soliciting prostitution sex workers and prostitution sex work per se. In the event all parties to the transaction are human, of course.

In any case, to judge by sample commentary, many US Americans are ill-equipped to advocate intelligently for the rights of prostitutes sex workers operating in any state but Nevada or organizing interstate commercial interests in the trade (as have marijuana growers recently despite federal prohibitions).

Syria 'chemical attack': France's President Macron 'has proof' - BBC
France's President Emmanuel Macron says he has "proof" that the Syrian government attacked the town of Douma with chemical weapons last weekend.

He said he would decide "in due course" whether to respond with air strikes.

Urine and blood samples from victims of the attack have tested positive for chlorine and a nerve agent, media reports quote US officials as saying.

The French president was interviewed by the TF1 TV channel earlier today, on a list of subjects, without getting specific, as usual.

Syria, the "proof" of chemical weapons
The President of the Republic assured that "we have evidence that last week chemical weapons were used by the regime of Bashar Al-Assad" on the city of the Duma, in the suburbs of Damascus, which fell entirely to hands of the Syrian army Thursday, April 12.

However, Mr. Macron said that France had not yet decided a possible reaction to this attack. "We will have decisions to make in due time," he said, adding that "everything must be done to ensure ceasefires." The head of state also said he called "repeatedly" Russian President Vladimir Putin, ally of Bashar al-Assad. "In no case will France allow an escalation to happen, or whatever may damage the stability of the region," he said.

It appears, unexpectedly -- that is, within the last week-- that a recent browser update has elected un-English eurotrib.com content delivered by US pipes for automated translation.

That is why it was so surprising to discover the results of a new survey, conducted by the Geocartography Knowledge Group among 500 Jewish Israelis, for our book, Nakba in Hebrew. The survey shows that quite a few Israeli Jews, or at least many more than one would think, support the right of return of the Palestinian refugees.

Jewish Israelis were asked the following question: "In 1948, during the War of Independence, the majority of Palestinians who lived in the country were turned into refugees and have since been spread across the world. The right of return of the Palestinian refugees refers to the possibility of every Palestinian refugee (and his/her descendants) to decide between actual return to the place where they lived until 1948, and other forms of compensation. The significance of the recognition of the right of return may be that more than seven million Palestinian refugees will choose to return to Israel. To what extent do you support or oppose the right of return as presented?"

The detailed wording and inclusion of "over seven million" Palestinian refugees were meant to ensure that the respondents fully understand the significance of recognition and implementation of the right of return. This was done after the wording in two previous surveys was less explicit, yielding more than 20 percent results in support of the right of return. And yet, 16.2 percent of respondents in the new survey answered that they support return, or that they support it "provided the refugees return in peaceful conditions."

According to the survey, nearly twice as many women support the right of return than man (17.2 percent as opposed to nine). An especially optimistic figure can be found when breaking down the responses by age: Israelis between the ages of 18 and 34 support the right of return at a particularly high rate (25.9 percent), compared to adults over the age of 55 (15.1 percent) and those between 35-54 (7.3 percent). Meanwhile, Israelis who earn an average income are twice as likely to support the right of return than those who earn an above-average income (21.9 percent as opposed 12.7 percent).

Inter-Korean summit to focus on ending Cold War framework on Korean Peninsula
under the current armistice system, it would be meaningless for South and North Korea to declare the end of the war and make a peace treaty without a guarantee from the US and other major parties. Declaring the end of the war first could be problematic for the status and role of the UN Command, which is responsible for maintaining and managing the armistice system on the Korean Peninsula, and another objection is that South and North Korea do not have the authority to deal with this. That is presumably why a senior official from the Blue House said that "it's unclear whether we'll actually use the phrase `end the war.'"

"Since ending the war is not something that South and North Korea can do, if they don't declare the end of the war separately, they can confirm their previous mutual non-aggression declaration and push for a peace treaty and a promise to prevent war from ever reoccurring on the Korean Peninsula," said Cho Sung-ryul, chief of research for the Institute for National Security Strategy.
[...]
"One option is for the leaders to make a declaration confirming that South and North Korea will not engage in military hostilities and for more detailed discussions to take place during subsequent talks between the two sides' defense ministers or military officials," a senior government official said.

"Prior to this, North Korea and the US had to reach an agreement about denuclearization before a discussion could be held about peace on the Korean Peninsula. But now the discussion of a peace regime has been decoupled from the discussion of denuclearization. Inter-Korean relations had been a dependent variable of North Korea-US relations, but now they have become an independent variable. South Korea is actually moving with a considerable degree of autonomy," said Lee Hea-jeong, a professor at Chung-Ang University.

Why nuclear fusion is gaining steam - again - The Conversation

There are two reasons to be optimistic about fusion right now. Two big fusion reactors are built or being built. And fusion startups aiming to build smaller reactors, which would be cheaper, easier and quicker construct, are proliferating.

One of the two big reactors is a donut-shaped tokamak - a Russian acronym for a Soviet invention made in the 1950s that was designed to confine and compress plasma into a cylindrical shape in a powerful magnetic field. Powerful compression of the deuterium-tritium plasma at extremely high temperatures - as in about 100 million degrees Centigrade - causes fusion to occur.

ITER (Latin for "the way") is a collaboration between the European Union and the governments of India, Japan, South Korea, Russia, China and the U.S. This consortium is now spending more than US$20 billion to build a giant tokamak in southern France. By 2035, it's slated to generate 500 megawatts while operating on just 50 megawatts. Meeting that goal would essentially confirm that fusion is a feasible source of clean energy on a large scale.

Fuel supply will determine demand, and the future does not promise savings for producers or consumers. Apart from anticipated growth in competition from EV manufacturers
Currently Lithium production is focused primarily in four countries and by four companies

Currently, around 80 % of the total lithium production worldwide originates in these three South American countries plus Australia and production is split between four companies. As a result, the whole lithium market is lacking transparency. This is the reason the big battery and accumulator producers like Panasonic and the leading electric car manufacturers, above all Tesla Motors, are looking for long-term supply contracts with relatively small development companies that in part are not producing before 2020. As a result of this supply oligopoly, lithium is currently not traded in the market and the actual trading prices are strictly confidential. One reason often mentioned by the supplier is that the available and produced lithium qualities are too different for a standardized market place.[Swiss Resource Capital Ag, 2017]

AMRIT WILSON: I think that the workforce who came, who were employed at Grunwick, were mainly people who had fled from east Africa but had a very hard time in getting to Britain because the policies at the time of the then Labour partners. And then found themselves in a completely alien situation where they had been, most people had been middle-class. So the men found it very hard to do the types of jobs that were available ... some of them managed to find reasonable jobs, but the women then added to the family income by taking on sweatshop work.
INTERVIEWER: Add to that, I think, the owners of Grunwick were very explicit about the fact that they wanted to employ these types of women because they thought, they were very passive and they would accept the kind of wages they were being offered, and they wouldn't be able to get other people to do this kind of work.

A hard time getting in?

That's not how I remember it, the Labour party brought them in the face of an extremely hostile and negative reaction from the press and the public. This was the time of the infamous "Rivers of Blood" speech from Enoch Powell where he spoke of immigration causing riots in the streets.

The problem was that the country simply had no way of settling the numbers of people who arrived. They were housed in abandoned army camps in conditions that were simply unsuitable, but were the best that could be managed given the notice period.

But the owner of Grunwicks was a nasty little man who was far more suited to the employment conditions of today with zero hours minimum wage contracts imposed on many sectors of the workforce. He deserved to go down.

But, sadly it lasted a long time and he gained a large amount of sympathetic press in right wing papers who were promoting the idea of the lawlessness of unions wrecking the country.

Thacher probably can thank the Grunwick workers (and Liverpool council) in part for her victory

The Pyjama Game: Hawera cinema's clothing ban goes global

When bosses of a small Taranaki cinema decided to get tough on people turning up to watch films in their pyjamas, onesies and dirty workboots, they didn't expect to find themselves making global news.

Hāwera Cinema 2 outlawed the clothing in a "friendly reminder" to patrons posted on Facebook on Saturday, April 21 - and by Tuesday that message had been reported around the world thanks to the likes of the The Guardian and even the BBC.

"We have a dress code at Hāwera Cinemas," the original message read. "It's simple really, as long as you are appropriately dressed and are wearing clean footwear you are good to go.

Not actually on this date. From November 2011:

The Syrian revolution--a broad-based, non-sectarian, democratic anti-despot national movement--has failed.

Mass demonstrations never materialized in Damascus and Aleppo.  The military and security forces didn't crack.  The Alawite on Sunni crackdown (Alawites form the backbone of the army/security forces/irregular goon squads) fomented sectarian divisions, with most non-Sunnis minorities cleaving desperately to the Assad regime.  Prosperous Sunnis have presumably been hedging their bets by donating to the anti-government cause in recent days but have not explicitly abandoned the regime.

Moe interesting than the quoted part are the cited pieces of how the US, UK, F, Turkey and Saudi intervention is picking up steam.

Facebook insists it does not sell users' data to advertisers in latest blog post
"We provide advertisers with reports about the kinds of people seeing their ads and how their ads are performing, but we don't share information that personally identifies you," he said. "You can always see the 'interests' assigned to you in your ad preferences, and if you want, remove them."

The social network also said that when advertisers bring them information to reach users on the site, it does not share identifying data with the advertiser.
[...]
"It's the same with a free search engine, website or newspaper. The core product is reading the news or finding information - and the ads exist to fund that experience."

He added that Facebook would not allow users to opt out of seeing adverts because "ads are what keep Facebook free".

shure! It's kind of like storing your electronic health record (EHR) in an RHOI from which gov sub-contractors "disemminate" vital aggregate (or not) information to gov agencies, Facebook, DeepMind, NHS (UK), and Standford Medical School
