EU airline pilots and cabin crew have planned a general strike to protest Ryanair work conditions for the last week of September.

The IALPA (Irish pilots) settlement with Ryanair 6 Sept is to be ratified by Ryanair board and shareholders for the contract to take effect.

Interested unions across the EU have little confidence in this model of collective bargaining. Investor advisors have little confidence in this model. Several have publicly issued recommendations on the board's agenda and composition.

Now the British Airline Pilots' Association (BALPA) has added its market power to denouncing the legitimacy of Ryanair leadership and cut to the chase.

Pilots urge Ryanair shareholders to replace chairman and chief executive

Tomorrow is Ryaniar's annual shareholder meeting (AGM).

Employee activism in this sphere is a direct result of defects in Art. 153.

REUTERS | Frustrated Ryanair investors target chairman after year of strikes
GORMANSTON, Ireland (Reuters) - A significant minority of Ryanair (RYA.I) shareholders voted against the re-election ...
Bonderman (70.5%) and O'Leary (98.5%) survive votes of investor confidence. Those ratios are significant majorities.

IRISH TIMES confirms, adding
Ryanair seeks tax law changes to deal with industrial relations issue: "O'Leary lobbying to be allowed employ pilots and crew in European countries under local contracts", a move diametrically opposed to off-shore pilot and cabin crew unions' demands.

INDEPENDENT.IE confirms, adding
Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary: 'I'm not sure I want to run this company for another five years', "I own 4pc of the company. It's not like I'm going to go anywhere."

BELFAST TELEGRAPH confirms,
Almost 30% of Ryanair shareholders vote against chairman's re-election, hastily summarizing employee agitation including the wildcat strike in '17 which the corp brushed off as a "rostering failure". Then fired all the line managers. [1],[2],[3],[4]

THE IRISH EXAMINER has not yet commented on Ryanair's AGM.

The continental strike is on for 28 September.

Ryanair seeks tax law changes to deal with industrial relations issue, 20 Sep
Mr O'Leary told its annual general meeting on Thursday that the Republic's tax law required Ryanair to use Irish contracts, as staff worked on aircraft registered here and operated by a company based here.

Afterwards he confirmed that the airline had been lobbying the Government to change the law to allow the airline employ pilots and crew in other European countries under local contracts.

"Either there needs to be a change in Irish law or there needs to be changes in the double taxation agreements between those other European countries and Ireland, " he said. "We have been on it for some time."

EU orders Ryanair to meet European rules on local contracts
After a meeting with European Employment Commissioner Marianne Thyssen, Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary said the demand was "irrelevant" as the company had already written to unions in all EU countries offering to move staff to local contracts.
[...]
At a meeting in Brussels, Commissioner Thyssen told O'Leary that EU rules on employment for mobile air crews were clear - based not on the flag of the aircraft, but the place where workers left in the morning and returned in the evening.

"Respecting the law is not something over which workers should have to negotiate and not something that can be postponed to a later date," Thyssen said in a statement.

Ryanair playbook: unfair competition!
Ryanair on Wednesday also said it had submitted a complaint to the European Commission citing "anti-competitive behaviours" over the fact that employees of other airlines were involved in calling strikes in several countries across Europe.

It called on the Commission to investigate the "collective campaign," which it said included the European Cockpit Association and the International Transport Workers' Federation.

Macron unveils tax cuts as popularity plummets
PARIS -- Emmanuel Macron is deploying major tax cuts in his next budget to try to rev up the economy and lift his drooping approval scores -- but the headwinds are getting stronger.

The pro-business French president on Monday unveiled tax cuts worth as much as €26 billion for workers and employers, in the most substantial one-time reduction France has seen in more than a decade.

The cuts, which mainly target employers, fit into a strategy of making work pay more in a country where labor costs are high and unemployment -- currently stuck above 9 percent -- is plaguing the presidency.

But to pay for his cuts, Macron is hitting the less productive sections of society: Pensions are to be capped, as are welfare benefits, and public sector jobs are to be axed, according to a sneak peek of the budget provided Sunday by Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.

As Cat would say: try to act surprised.

Acquisitions as Corporate Money Hose - J. W. Mason

Recently, though, the Fed has begun reporting more detailed equity-finance flows, which break out the net issue figure into gross issues, repurchases, and retirements by acquisition. And it turns out that while buybacks are substantial, acquisitions are actually a bigger factor in negative net stock issues. Over the past 20 years, gross equity issues have averaged 1.9 percent of GDP, repurchases have averaged 1.7 percent of GDP, and retirements via acquisitions just over 2 percent of GDP. So if we look only at corporations' transactions in their own stock, it seems that that the stock market still is -- barely -- a net source of funds. For the corproate sector as a whole, of course, it is still the case that the stock market is, in Jeff Spross' memorable phrase, a giant money hose to nowhere.

Facebook, Google face first GDPR complaints over ‘forced consent’ – TechCrunch

The complaints have been filed on behalf of (unnamed) individual users -- with one filed against Facebook; one against Facebook-owned Instagram; one against Facebook-owned WhatsApp; and one against Google's Android.

Schrems argues that the companies are using a strategy of "forced consent" to continue processing the individuals' personal data -- when in fact the law requires that users be given a free choice unless a consent is strictly necessary for provision of the service. (And, well, Facebook claims its core product is social networking -- rather than farming people's personal data for ad targeting.)

Will Democrats Offer Resistance Against Aliens?

Thousands at risk from rightwing push to purge eligible voters from US rolls | The Gurdian |

In June last year, Luis, a resident of Virginia, was astonished to discover that his name and personal details, including home address, had been posted on the internet by a group known as the Public Interest Legal Foundation (Pilf).

Luis's data had been released by the group, along with hundreds of other names, as an appendix to Pilf's two-part report called "Alien Invasion". The front cover showed a UFO hovering ominously over a billboard on which the famous tourism slogan "Virginia is for lovers" had been photoshopped to read: "Virginia is for aliens".

In lurid language, Pilf claimed that it had uncovered proof that "large numbers of ineligible aliens are registering to vote and casting ballots". It warned its readers: "Your vote is at risk. New alien voters are being added to the rolls month after month, and swift changes must be made to ensure that only Americans are choosing American leaders."

I watched all 8 hours.

Hiring Rachel Mitchell to mediate was an excellent idea. I think, she put Ford at ease, when committee members acted the fool. Toward the end of Ford's session Mitchell rebuked senators' constant interruptions (format of the hearing) being non-conductive for best practice victim/witness interview. She was brill.

The hearing provided no new information about the alleged incident. It provided the politicians many CYA opportunities to argue the necessity of further FBI background investigation ...of Mark Judge, favorite Dem alternate suspect/material witness. He's already testified 3x to the committee.

In Kavanaugh's interrogatory, the minority party focused on whether or not he was and still is an alcoholic --based on statements to the press by acquaintances, 1982-1984 or so, to imply that he couldn't remember that he's molested or "raped" Ford. Much public comment (letters) of support for Ford were submitted entered but not read into the record.

The committee will vote to confirm. I suspect, the full vote will go down party line. Pence might be pulled out of bed to tie-break.

Palmer:
Certain cable news pundits are already spinning the nonsensical narrative that Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's strong testimony destroyed Brett Kavanaugh's nomination, but that Kavanaugh's subsequent mentally deranged testimony somehow put him back in the game. This is a mere ratings ploy, in the hope of keeping you tuned in for the rest of the evening, in the hope you won't switch over to watch Law & Order reruns. Could the GOP convince its "no" votes to flip to "yes"? Sure. But as of right now, Kavanaugh doesn't have the votes. Any other narrative is fiction.
[emphasis added]
Well, no. "Subsequent deranged testimony" is a rather overwrought, gothic, characterization of Kavanaugh's remarks. In the wrong mouth it is an apt description of Ford's testimony, which was, understandably, not "strong" (or "vivid" or "accurate" or "heroic", words of encouragement offered by sympathetic senators). Her account of events 36 years ago is incoherent, deranged, considering how she relied on empirical knowledge to illustrate her experience. Both have tarried under a significant duress with life altering decisions which neither controls. Given the circumstances, demeanor is a poor gauge of mind, despite trust in atavistic innovations to phrenology and psychometric criminology AI.

What did I write?

"The moment" for sympathy dissipated under questioning, however, as he withdrew to adversarial or ambiguous responses to Dem senators' repetitive questions. Progressives most certainly will construe the worst in his character as the most vocal have already endowed his confirmation with biblical catastrophe. The thing is, they've neglected the states' legislatures. Also, Trump is trading one "conservative" for another.
I've indicated, the spectacle of the hearing is deranged from political facts, events which indeed have occurred. A string of louche utterances serves the point of underdog du jour.
I worked my tail off ... You may defeat me in the final vote but you'll never get me to quit.
Resonates seven ways to Sunday with all yer American dreamers. It's so crass, it works!

Palmer's speculation extends the possibility of defeating GOP domination in SCOTUS, the sense being, inexplicably, so goes the nation. Why? That part is sketchy. In my experience, WASPs are way more pragmatic than credited by the general population. Spartan, if you will. I think Kavanaugh has net votes in the senate, because I've been following the swingers since the DACA-budget Fails. A caucus is convened to determine how to use THIS DIVISIVE ACT down-ticket, mid-term election. That is six weeks off.

The senate judiciary committee today advanced (11-10) Kavanaugh's nomination to a floor vote.

In exchange for his vote the 11th man, Jeff Flake (AZ), arranged to delay the confirmation vote one week to accommodate something like a "thorough investigation" by the FBI into allegations about  "sexual battery" and and intemperate character.

Senator Feinstein was heard to say,

"This was someone who was aggressive and belligerent. I have never seen someone who wants to be elevated to the highest court in the country behave in that manner. In stark contrast, the person who testified yesterday and demonstrated a balanced temperament was Dr. Ford"
In a statement, Feinstein indicated minority party interest in deposing James Roche, Lynne Brookes, Liz Swisher, Tom Kane, Chris Dudley, Debra Ramirez, and Julie Swetnick --individuals' who have asserted to press reporters intimate knowledge of Kavanaugh's deviant behavior.

Debra Katz, a lawyer for Ford, stated, "No artificial limits as to time or scope should be imposed on this investigation."

Trump endorsed a limited, "supplemental investigation" to update Kavanaugh's background file.

GOP committee support for Kavanaugh's confirmation was very strong. Because minority opposition was very strong relentless questioning in pursuit of Kavanaugh's consent to further FBI investigation (delay the committee vote). Lindsy Graham's histrionics were remarkable.

Kavanaugh appeared in the afternoon. His opening statement was not conciliatory but aggressively defensive. He ranted about "left-wing opposition," the circus atmosphere of prior protested hearings and death threats to his family. This probably stoked GOP members' indignation and would have offended anyone else unaccustomed to, well, male+atty+Type-A posturing. (Trascripts of prior depositions are stored at Grassley's senate website. I have not read these.)

He did choke up (swallowed tears of frustration?) a few times, coincidentally, when evoking Mom (atty) and Dad (atty) and his own young daughters. Kavanaugh denied every accusation and produced alibis for the entire summer of '82 from appointment books already "in evidence" with the committee.

I deliberately did not include race and age attributes in my personality profile. It is based on personal, habitual, and intimate experience with lawyers --my father among them.

Law school trains people. Litigation changes attitude. Paramount among requirements for successful practice of the profession is the ability to adopt an adversarial proposition in any controversy and methodically defend it. Many have difficulty leaving that persona at the office.

I'm not saying, it's attractive, just that I understand and immediately identified Kavanaugh's limitations for what they are. Agile management immersion is not one.

You may argue that "white dudebro" is the archetype which the institution of "English law" (Roman law) elevates. I may be yet persuaded in so far as it admits competences to "fear/hate" women regardless of sex. HRC is a notorious example.

We need to talk about bourgeois political games.
Cosby represents a Black American political right wing whose views of the Black poor are just as crude and dehumanizing as their white counterparts.
[...]
Bill Cosby is still getting settled into his new home at Pennsylvania's State Correctional Institute at Phoenix, a huge, 3,830-bed facility not far from the suburban Philadelphia courtroom where Judge Steven O'Neill sentenced  the 81-year old comedian to serve "no less than 3 years and no more than 10 years" for aggravated sexual assault against Andrea Constand, in 2004. That was the same year Cosby delivered his infamous "pound cake" rant at an NAACP awards ceremony, in Washington DC, marking the 50th anniversary of the Brown school desegregation decision. Cosby's contempt for the Black poor and their propensity to wind up in prison was on shameless display.

"These are not political criminals," Cosby told the tuxedoed celebrants. "These are people going around stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of pound cake and then we run out and we are outraged, [saying] 'The cops shouldn't have shot him.' What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his hand?"
[...]
This is the life Cosby will share with an inmate population that is 46 percent Black , although Blacks make up only eleven percent of Pennsylvania's general population. Most are from the same neighborhoods of Philadelphia that people "with names like Shaniqua, Shaligua, Mohammed, and all that crap" come from, "and all of them are in jail," in Cosby's "pound cake" parlance.

and Valerie Jarrett --ostesibly scions of the "talented tenth," which is W. E. B. Du Bois's epithet for that ratio of descendants of slaves whose educational attainment matched normal levels of competence set by "white dudebros". He counted himself among them. And his memoir The Souls of Black Folks recounts the squalor, ignorance, aspirations, and responsibility that he encountered during a mission into the rural south and which separated himself from the majority at the turn of the 20th century.

"oreos and other model minorities"
I'm pleased that you raise the topic. Race discrimination in the USA is not well understood as a collaborative project to defend class distinctions. The diverging political paths of Garvey and Du Bois, for example, toward "integration" with the dominant culture has been successfully merged into an American trope of "black nationalism" that few younger than 50 examine.

When in Rome ...
I was suspicious of Obama's motives from the start and wrote (poorly and poorly timed) about this once at DKOS. Self-servin' sumbitch is what I saw, and that is what has been revealed.

Per the current moral panic, I recommend Yvette Carnell's commentary. One of the reasons I enjoy listening to her on occasion is that she and her colleagues consistently draw economic chart porn --from diverse sources-- into topical "conversation" about race politics. The preponderance of the evidence devastates what she terms "virtual integration" (fictional, delusional progressive unity depicted by MSM) in a country where "money is power" is a mantra.

Why college students don't vote absentee
A Fairfax County focus group this summer found many college students who have gotten an absentee ballot simply fail to send it back because a U.S. Postal Service stamp seems to be a foreign concept to them.

"One thing that came up, which I had heard from my own kids but I thought they were just nerdy, was that the students will go through the process of applying for a mail-in absentee ballot, they will fill out the ballot, and then, they don't know where to get stamps," Lisa Connors with the Fairfax County Office of Public Affairs said.

The choice is not so flippant.
First, location of voter registration determines where and for whom one votes. Many states qualify "student" residency. VA is one such state.

I disagree. Look:
"We're really working on information to get the college students to be able to actually vote where they're registered and vote absentee because it's very confusing and it has a lot of pieces that can sort of go wrong in the middle of it," said Kate Hanley, Fairfax County Electoral Board secretary.
The effect of "absentee voter" advocacy is to discourage registration where students reside. In the US, the decision where isn't a question of convenience. Or stamps. (FFS. Absentee ballots are postage paid.) This GOTV campaign is controlling state election outcomes by suppressing student registration in state.

REFUSING to register to vote in the locality where one resides (9) NINE months of any given year is stupid;

PREFERENCE for enfranchisement in a locality where one resides ...maybe.. (3) THREE months of any given year is stupid; or, I'll be charitable, a "misguided" expression of one's immediate political obligations and informed opinion of the community's needs.

Now. I am aware that, generally speaking, "local" politics is unfashionable, local elections are not well attended, and representation in state legislature's is not as glamorous as the vicarious struggle to control chambers of the federal government. But it's these assumptions that prey on the credulity of youngsters searching to "make a difference", easy.

All true, well-known, but irrelevant to this particular article (which isn't about this issue). As for absentee ballots being counted last - so what? (assuming they are counted, which I'm not sure is always done). At least they are counted by hand, not by some machine with proprietary code, so they are probably less at risk from hacking by Putin, Kim Jong-un, or Netanyahu.

Israel and Russia never had a closer, more intense relationship. Ever since the Russians first settled down right in the heart of Israel's most sensitive front, Netanyahu has been a regular visitor to the Kremlin. He sees Putin more frequently than he meets with Israel's natural ally, Trump. Senior Israeli intelligence, security and military officials visit Moscow frequently, and these visits are reciprocated. The possibility that the Americans have expressed concern about this intense cooperation between Israeli and Russian security forces should not be ruled out, which is why Israel updates Washington whenever any progress is made in the romance between Russia and Israel. Now is the moment that the Americans have been waiting for. It turns out that the romance between Netanyahu and Putin was fake all along. It was marginal and far less important than the real romance between Putin and the Assad regime, and with Iran and Hezbollah. Netanyahu was the kind of lover that Putin threw under the bus at the first sign of crisis.

[...]

Given this hindsight, the chattering of the political class, their boastful statements, their boastfulness and their smugness are now being subjected to scathing criticism in Israel. Many politicians, including the prime minister, have boasted about Israel's attacks in Syrian territory time and again, instead of embracing Israel's long-standing tradition of radio silence -- and public silence, too. Now this is all exploding in the Israelis' faces.

'We're moving to higher ground': America's era of climate mass migration is here
Millions of Americans will confront similarly hard choices as climate change conjures up brutal storms, flooding rains, receding coastlines and punishing heat. Many are already opting to shift to less perilous areas of the same city, or to havens in other states. Whole towns from Alaska to Louisiana are looking to relocate, in their entirety, to safer ground.

The era of climate migration is, virtually unheralded, already upon America.

The population shift gathering pace is so sprawling that it may rival anything in US history. "Including all climate impacts it isn't too far-fetched to imagine something twice as large as the Dustbowl," said Jesse Keenan, a climate adaptation expert at Harvard University, referencing the 1930s upheaval in which 2.5 million people moved from the dusty, drought-ridden plains to California.
