Hezbollah TV channel says Twitter accounts suspended | AFP |

The television station of Lebanon's powerful Shiite movement Hezbollah protested Saturday that most of its Twitter accounts had been suspended.

Al-Manar accused the US-based social media platform of giving in to "political pressures".

"Account suspended," one such Arabic-language account, @almanarnews, read late Saturday.

"There is no place on Twitter for illegal terrorist organisations and violent extremist groups," a Twitter spokesperson told AFP.

Iran-backed Hezbollah is designated a "terrorist" group by the United States and several of its officials are under US sanctions, but it is also a key political player in Lebanon.

The group held three ministerial posts and a majority with its Christian allies before Lebanon's cabinet fell this week after 13 days of mass anti-graft protests.

Hezbollah is the only group not to have disarmed after Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, and it fought Israeli troops who occupied southern Lebanon until 2000.

It has also been a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the neighbouring country's eight-year conflict.

Twitter suspends accounts associated with Hezbollah and Hamas

Hezbollah's television station Al-Manar said that most of the Twitter accounts associated with the station were suspended.

The accounts in English, French and Spanish were said to be suspended, but the Twitter handles of specific television shows seemed to be working, the news agency AFP reported.

"There is no place on Twitter for illegal terrorist organizations and violent extremist groups," a Twitter spokesperson told AFP.

Germany will not list Iran-allied Hezbollah as terrorist: minister | DW - March 2019 |

A top official has said Germany will not ban Hezbollah's political wing following Britain's decision to do so. Germany is under pressure from the United States to take hard action against the Iran-backed Lebanese group.

Niels Annen, deputy minister in the Foreign Ministry, told newsmagazine Der Spiegel that the Iran-backed Shiite Islamist movement is a relevant factor in Lebanese society and part of the complex political landscape in the country.

The comments come after Britain last month banned Hezbollah in its entirety, accusing the movement of destabilizing the Middle East.

"The British move is a national decision that has no direct impact on the position of the German government or the EU," Annen said.

The United Kingdom is set to ban Shiite Islamist groups Hezbollah, Ansarul Islam and Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam Muslimeen (JNIM) [latter two are Al Qaeda in Sahel], the UK's Home Office said in a statement . The measure, which need parliamentary approval, is set to go into effect immediately. If approved, being a member of -- or inviting support for -- the three organizations will be a criminal offense carrying a 10-year prison sentence, the Home Office said.

The European Union had already added Hezbollah's military wing to a list of banned terrorist groups in 2013.

Hezbollah is represented in the Lebanese parliament and holds three of 30 ministries in the government led by Western-backed Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri.

Misty-eyed 'heritage' shows like The Crown are useful to the Brexit narrative | The Guardian Opinion |

Aside from making elites feel good about themselves, the British public laps these films up. They seem to reflect what the academic Paul Gilroy termed "postcolonial melancholia". Or, as Salman Rushdie wrote, the "refurbishment of the empire's tarnished image". Rushdie argued that "the continuing decline, the growing poverty and the meanness of spirit of much of Thatcherite Britain encourages many Britons to turn their eyes nostalgically to the lost hour of their precedence".

How relevant such observations seem today. After decades of neoliberalism, crippling austerity and a string of calamitous foreign military interventions, a wave of nostalgic television shows has emerged: Downton Abbey, Victoria, The Crown, along with the films mentioned above.

As for the political landscape, it is well understood that Brexit is a project imbued with imperial nostalgia. The rightwing leave narrative used the evocative language of "making Britain great again", "taking back control", and Britain assuming its "rightful place in the world".

What is the excuse for Prince Andrew's misogynistic nonsense served in a gilded chamber?
