Chrystia Freeland: Canada's new deputy PM who could prove crucial for Trudeau, 21 Nov
On Wednesday, the prime minister, Justin Trudeau, ["]elevated["] Freeland, a former journalist, to the role of deputy prime minister. A largely ceremonial position, the job has not been filled since 2006.
The Ukraine Weekly | Chrystia Freeland begins her second act as second in command in Canada
"But she was prepared to serve in whatever the most effective way that the prime minister thought, and he chose intergovernmental affairs, which makes a lot of sense based on the current situation domestically," said Mr. Grod, who noted that he had to reassure members of the Ukrainian diaspora that Ms. Freeland's appointment as deputy prime minister was a promotion that gave her a senior role in the Trudeau Cabinet. "She's been a superstar with every Ukrainian president and prime minister that she's interacted with," he said. "She walks on water - that's the way she's perceived."
Under New Management sez, I don't know about that.
A Sea Change for Canada Foreign Policy as Freeland Is Replaced by a Pro-Chinese Politico
As of November 18, 2019, Freeland has found herself cut down a notch by the "plutocrats" that she has worked so assiduously to destroy since becoming Canada's Foreign Minister in 2017 when she ousted a Foreign Minister (Stephane Dion) who had called for a renewed cooperation with Russia on space, counter-terrorism and arctic development with Sergei Lavrov. Freeland's unrepentant support for Ukrainian Nazis and NATO encirclement of Russia resulted in a total alienation of Russia. Her alienation of China was so successful that the Chinese government removed their ambassador in the summer of 2019. Freeland's work in organizing the failed coup in Venezuela and supporting the MI6-Soros White Helmets in Syria became so well known that she became known as the Canadian queen of regime change. ...

Freeland's appointment as FM was lauded by Conservatives and war-hawks in Washington DC alike. A dispatch from the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa stated: "Canada adopts `America First' foreign policy.

Her love for Ukraine is personal ...

Freeland's grandfather Michael Chomiak was a Nazi-propagandist during the war who edited a newspaper with grotesque anti-Semitic editorials and praise for the Ukrainian Waffen SS division.

Trudeau's foreign policy is truly two-faced ... DT didn't tell a fib.

Good news, if Naked Capitalism is right.
So I have to confess to not being persuaded by the handwringing over the US losing out in 5G. Early last year, I heard a staffer in the Department of State say it was common knowledge that there was no business case for it, which would be news to anyone reading the press. Perhaps that's the result of the cost of more tightly spaced cell towers.

Obviously device producers would love to force yet more product obsolescence on their users.

Yves Smith: it was common knowledge that there was no business case for it, which would be news to anyone reading the press.

This is nothing new for anyone familiar with the telco industry. The telco operators around the world are barely breaking even with their 4G network investments started over ten years ago. Deploying 5G NR (New Radio) will cost more, but the real challenge is that people are not ready to pay more for 5G than they are paying for 4G today, hence the lousy business case.

To convince investors and politicians, telco execs have cranked up the hype machine to 11: 5G, which is basically "another G", coming after 3G and 4G, is supposed to revolutionize our world, usher in a new industrial revolution thanks to always on multi gigabit, low latency connectivity. The favorite "use cases" often cited are immersive VR/AR, remote surgery (not likely anytime soon: reliability) and of course, the autonomous car which, we're being told, couldn't possibly exist without 5G.

Oh, and look who's at the top of the 2019 Gartner hype cycle.

There are several versions of 5G: the one that will bring the highest throughput (gigabits per second) is running over millimeter waves, 28 GHz band in the US, the only country to date where millimeter waves is deployed in some test cities. Trouble is: millimeter waves have a very short range (less than 50m), are stopped by walls (no indoor coverage), foliage etc...
This is why it is using many "small cells" every city block or so, connected by fiber optic backhaul. All this of course requires a lot of capex, which pretty much limits these networks to dense city centers.

by Bernard on Fri Dec 6th, 2019 at 09:38:17 PM EST
[ Parent ]
Adding:

Other versions of 5G ("middle band") use the same frequency bands as existing 3G and 4G networks (that's what's deployed in Europe today), but the throughput will be, maybe a 30-50% improvement over the existing 4G. Definitely not an order of magnitude.

The high cost of 5G equipment (plenty of small cells) and the spectrum auctions make 5G networks a non-trivial decision for telco operators, to be polite. All the hype, that race with the Chinese etc... is to get more money (subsidies, subsidies) to shoulder the cost.

And lastly, about that famous "race to 5G", a shameless self-plug in the beloved series "get your news 6 months early on ET".

You're standing bored at one of those interminable palace receptions, all dickied up but with nowhere to go without breaking some protocol or other. So you sip your wine, eat your canapes, and gossip with your colleagues about the big, rather thin skinned bully who has just hit town.

He dishes out more abuse than anyone but can't take the mildest rebuff. Like braindead. At least Melania has hoisted the yellow flag of surrender and knows how to play the game with style.

Poor Boris is terrified Trump might say anything and hides every time Trump sails into view. So nice to have these European chums to take cover with...oh wait.. these are the guys I'm busy screwing over. Ah well, at least Corbyn has been chaperoned away from my Lord and Master.

Poor old Prince Andrew can't be here to distract the hoi polloi. Something about some nag he shagged causing a fuss. Why don't these people know their place? I have mine shacked up in no. 10 to keep her quiet. Still, mustn't spill my wine over the sofa. The neighbours might get to hear!

Boris's Blundering Brilliance
This "lovable buffoon," as he's called now by journalists and politicos as well as former Labour voters turning Tory in focus groups in the Midlands, has skillfully maneuvered toward a full term as prime minister and perhaps toward an era in British politics when the Conservative Party is defined less by Thatcherism than Borisism. Through complete lack of principle, endless charm, and ruthless ambition, he has managed to bring about a possibility that, not too long ago, probably only he allowed himself to fantasize about: that he would become not just prime minister but a significant one.

[...] Johnson's ideological flexibility was key - so much so that it led him to resist the more doctrinaire forces in his own party. As mayor, Johnson complained about the austerity measures of the Tory Cameron government. And as prime minister, he has immediately ramped up public spending on the police, schools, and hospitals. He shelved a previous proposal to lower the corporation tax and has focused on raising the income threshold at which Brits pay the equivalent of the Social Security tax and on raising the minimum wage nationwide. He has urged people to "Buy British" - a slogan anathema to market economics. Whether this is posturing or serious, no one knows exactly, but it sure is a sharp move rhetorically left for the Tories, away from the wealthy and austerity and toward the working poor and debt.

Boris Johnson's women problem

"The data has consistently shown that Boris Johnson does not poll as well amongst women as he does amongst men," according to Curtis.

While much is made in Westminster of the prime minister's personal style and alleged sexism, Curtis also pointed to Brexit as part of the reason for the gender divide.

Curtis suggested the gap could be partly down to the fact that women are more likely than men to oppose a no-deal Brexit. "But there also seems to be something about Boris that women, particularly younger women, just aren't warming to," he said.

Who were the winners and losers? Suzanne Breen's verdict on UTV election debate
UUP leader Steve Aiken said the blame for the Irish Sea border in Boris Johnson's Brexit deal lay with his unionist rival which "wasn't over the jot and tittle" of the issue.
[...]
Emma-Little Pengelly, the DUP's South Belfast candidate, strongly denied the claim and said her party had repeatedly blocked bad Brexit deals. It aimed to once again hold the balance of power in a hung Parliament and use its influence to change Mr Johnson's agreement, she said.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said the DUP's strategy of "Ulster Hall meetings and beating drums" was doomed to failure.
[...]
Michelle O'Neill disagreed with the suggestion that Sinn Fein should take its seats at Westminster to stop Brexit. "Look at the last couple of years, Irish interests will never be served at Westminster," she said. "Thirty-five SNP MPs couldn't stop Brexit."

But Alliance leader Naomi Long challenged her, saying: "We haven't Brexited because the SNP and others turned up and ["]voted the government down["] consistently and you haven't been there to be part of that and you won't be there to be part of that."
