Turkey's election board orders rerun of Istanbul mayoral vote
Turkey's top election board announced on Monday that the vote for the mayor of Istanbul, the country's largest city and economic hub, will be redone.

The new vote will be held on June 23, the board said in a statement, adding the March 31 election was cancelled because of "situations which affected the result and honesty" of the polls.

Some ballot box committees were formed illegally by district election board members who will face criminal complaints, the High Election Board said.

It also voted to cancel the mandate of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).

Imamoglu was declared the mayor of the metropolis on April 17, pending the AK Party's last objection to the close results.

Das kann in jeder Demokratie mal passieren: Nach dem falschen Ergebnis im ersten Wahlgang muss die Bürgermeisterwahl in Istanbul erneut von der Regierung manipuliert werden - diesmal aber so, dass ein für Staatspräsident Erdogan zufriedenstellendes Wahlergebnis zustande kommt.

"Die Hohe Wahlkommission hat entschieden", so Kommissionspräsident Sadi Güven. "Die erste Wahl war ganz klar nicht demokratisch korrekt manipuliert, sonst wäre doch nicht so ein doofes Ergebnis herausgekommen, bei dem die AKP 25.000 Stimmen zu wenig hat".

Facebook hit by landmark censorship lawsuit in Poland

Why the European Parliament's election video is going viral
The "Choose your future" title is a classic one. That is what the European elections are about as Europeans are voting for their MEPs, who will make tomorrow's laws.

However, it is an original take on birth as it is both raw and emotional. The first part shows about fifteen women giving birth to little Europeans, who were born in February and March 2019 in Greece, Czech Republic, Denmark and Hungary. There were shots of quite distressing pain, followed by raw images of giving birth and various reactions.

They won't.

They will encourage people to download and print their ballot papers, for at least a dozen of the lists.

Electoral expenses (posters, ballot papers etc) are only reimbursed for lists that get over 3%.

This is a first, as far as I can remember.

Mind, there are already two explicitly anti-Muslim lists, notably one led by Renaud Camus. Yes, the Great Replacement guy, ideologue who has inspired white supremacist Freedom fighters from ... California to Christchurch.

The story is that two serious candidates defeated populism in the face of the policeman Skvernelis and lesser wannabes.

The Prime Minister Skvernelis is going to keep his vow to resign after this failure, signaling that the common electorate is making a mistake by yielding to high-brow public shaming of his party. Next Parliamentary election is scheduled for October 2020.

Both Nausėda (a mainstream economist) and Šimonytė (a former finance minister) look very similar to the outgoing Grybauskaitė (a former EU finance commissioner), particularly regarding expected EU/NATO/economic/social policies. Nausėda has a better chance, as much of the Soviet generation feels antipathy to the conservatives. On the other hand, Skvernelis called Nausėda a covert conservative this week (and was politely rebuked, of course).

Complaints by Spanish workers who are say they are being exploited by Dutch employers have been brought to the attention of the European parliament ahead of this week's debate about a new European Labour Authority which connects national labour inspectorates, the Financieele Dagblad reports.

Complaints from Spanish workers, presented to the European parliament at the invitation of the ruling socialist party PSOE last week, include fewer working hours than initially promised, poor living and working conditions and contracts promising a fixed monthly wage that turn out to be zero hour contracts.

Truck drivers become key EU election issue in Bulgaria
The European Commission wants to put restrictions on cargo transport to ensure adequate rest for truck drivers and limit driving distances. Bulgaria, where the transport sector accounts for 15% of GDP and employs some 200,000 people, fears it will erode its workforce's low-cost advantage. Earlier in May, European Commission First Vice-president and lead candidate of the Party of European Socialists (PES) for the new Commission president, Frans Timmermans, called on the EU countries to introduce a European minimum wage standard.

It appears that Bulgaria is called Angel Dzhambazki. His political party is not specified in the article. The Bulgarian National Movement, as its name indicates, is a right wing party. One suspects that Angel's worry is more for the Bulgarian trucking companies than the drivers (his claim that the drivers would move to western Europe is interesting, because they would earn much higher wages there...)

Israel on Tuesday criticized an article authored by a close adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, which claimed that Ukraine's president may want to move Israeli Jews into parts of his country, as "conspiratorial and anti-Semitic."

Jerusalem was "puzzled" by Sergey Glazyev's article, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Emmanuel Nahshon told The Times of Israel.

"The conspiratorial and anti-Semitic style of his words is inappropriate and does not reflect the positive nature of Russia's relations with Israel," Nahshon added.

being fair to them, the Tories acknowledged a month ago that they have a problem with these elections. Half of the party don't think they should be contesting them at all and the other half are too old to do anything to help anyway.

I could refer you to my posts of ten years ago concerning rape in the context of cultural relativism, i.e. Swedish law vs Australian practice.
But probably only another New Zealander would find it funny (we have been telling jokes about Australian sexual unsophistication since probably the 19th century)

Because east-west has decreased pretty steadily since 2001 (why it increased from 1997 to 2001 is a good question), and west-east is fairly stable, and eventually the two lines crossed. I wonder how much of the west-east that is movement to former East Berlin?

And Strache has resigned. Norbert Hofer takes over. If this is all then not a particularly great outcome, Hofer was always the smarter one. We'll see what the chancellor will say. Continuing the coalition opens up a lot of loot. Conversely you could save the Republic™ and then get more of the loot if the elections work out.

Until this episode, the conventional wisdom (well, Politico.eu) was presenting Kurz as the Wunderkind of European "center-right" politics, the epitome of "generational change" (Kurz is 31).

And many EPP parties across Europe have been looking at his coalition with the extreme right, a move that may become inevitable, despite all claims to the contrary: between loosing power and allying with fascists, they are not going to drop power.

Kurz is was 31 when he formed the coalition. It's pretty funny, really. All the paid opinion havers on the TV tell me he has a great political talent and great message discipline. But in practice that just means he sticks to his prepared talking points and doesn't engage with questions, similar to Maybot3000. That's also the most likely reason that he hid out for close to two days. Had to practice the speach. Although rumor(from FPÖ sources) has it that he initially wanted to grab the interior ministry and keep going.

In his speech he plainly states that there is no political convergence with the SocDems, he was a victim of (former SPÖ campaign manager) Siberstein like campaigning and he had been very happy with the coalition. Apparently he just didn't notice that they were working at the Orbanisation of the Austrian media landscape? Yet it seems the state broadcaster did notice, they were incredibly careful in not putting any blame at the Kurz's doorstep. There was one truly bizarre episode when their domestic policy chief wanted to detect increasing anger and aggression in the crowd that reminded him of the time the first far-right government had to sneak into the Hofburg through a tunnel. His younger colleague only found a "party mood", the police guy had "no incidence" and all the while he was talking you could see a little kid sitting on someone's shoulders right behind him in the crowd, but what do they know.
True to form in Russian election interference scandals we are again mainly looking at some idiots getting scammed by fake oligarchs.
And talking about election interference: In a curious coincidence, their "very good Israeli friends" arrested Silberstein right in the hot phase of the last election.

A few additional things I, or possible a random Twitter user, picked up:
They were handing out infrastructure projects well in advance to formal coalition talks. Just like they knew they'd get the ministry after the election.
Austria's oligarchy can't be happy of getting named in connection with illegal party financing.
The Kronenzeitung will probably stop pushing the FPÖ for a bit, but I think they have been on the Kurz train for  a while anyway.
This will probably turn out pretty expensive for the republic, also very on brand for the far-right. Haselsteiner, the oligarch behind the NEOS party and the one Strache wanted to explicitly cut out of infrastructure contracts will have an easy case.
The SPÖ still seems very unprepared for elections.

I didn't find a good source, but the number for government inserts seems to total around 24 million a year. The legal limit that a party can spend on an election is 7 million. Though there really aren't any consequences except a minor fine. The conservatives officially spent twice that on the last general.

The rudiments of the power to punish for "contempt of Congress" come to us from the pages of English history. The origin of privileges and contempts extends back into the period of the emergence of Parliament. The establishment of a legislative body which could challenge the absolute power of the monarch is a long and bitter story. In that struggle, Parliament made broad and varied use of the contempt power. Almost from the beginning, both the House of Commons and the House of Lords claimed absolute and plenary authority over their privileges. This was an independent body of law, described by Coke as lex parliamenti. [Footnote 9] Only Parliament could declare what those privileges were or what new privileges were occasioned, and only Parliament could judge what conduct constituted a breach of privilege.

In particular, this exclusion of lex parliamenti from the lex terrae, or law of the land, precluded judicial review of the exercise of the contempt power or the assertion of privilege. Parliament declared that no court had jurisdiction to consider such questions. In the latter part of the seventeenth century, an action for false imprisonment was brought by one Jay, who had been held in contempt. The defendant, the Serjeant-at-Arms of the House of Commons, demurred that he had taken the plaintiff into custody for breach of privilege. The Chief Justice, Pemberton, overruled the demurrer. Summoned to the bar of the House, the Chief Justice explained that he believed that the assertion of privilege went to the merits of the action, and did not preclude jurisdiction. For his audacity, the Chief Justice was dispatched to Newgate Prison. [Footnote 10]

It seems inevitable that the power claimed by Parliament would have been abused. Unquestionably it was. A few examples illustrate the way in which individual rights were infringed. During the seventeenth century, there was a violent upheaval, both religious and political. This was the time of the Reformation and the establishment of the Church of England. It was also the period when the Stuarts proclaimed that the royal prerogative was absolute. Ultimately there were two revolutions, one protracted and bloody, the second without bloodshed. Critical commentary of all kinds was treated as contempt of Parliament in these troubled days.

I suspect that the attempt to get both the full text of the Muller report, and the tax returns, would require an actual use of police force at the White Hosue, something that I do not think will actually happen. 2017: It's clear to me that this writer's contempt for 45 was passionate and shrouded in fable. I wonder if she's satisfied today "now that the Democrats are in control of the House". I'm thinking of Gabor Mate and also Sema Hernandez, progressive ingenue, recently show-cased by Jimmy Dore. I'm thinking of the sophist Jeff Toobin Esq.
So, after nearly two and a half centuries, Trump will create a new [?] constitutional norm--in which the executive can defy the legislature without consequence. The only likely remedy, therefore, will lie with the voters, next year.
As I read, there are far too many people rehearsing elevator pitches and waving permission slips at their "media" reflections.

US government and its rude, faux frontier nobility have from time to time embraced "dictators" since the inception of their republic. I wonder idly, what children learn in elementary school. Have teachers left off the cherry tree and graceful retirement of His Excellency Geo. Washington from the catechism of model American democracy? I would guess so, considering that "constitutional crisis" case load per term has increased from 1,195 in 1950 to 7,000-8,000 in the 21st century, yet this year, this president, this congress is supposedly different.

I count three. John Adams, FDR, GWB. I wouldn't count Trump and his asinine humor, because I pretty certain  Trump has not ushered any legal, or "legitimate," authority into the office that has not already been delegated to his predecessors by the US Congress. But I might be persuade by the four "red scares" that I've counted. Two coincide with "dictator" administrations --his and FDR's. To the administrations of Adams, FDR, and GWH we must admit, however, the most alarming marriage of ideal "national security" privileges and whichever, spectacularly undesirable "aliens" available to each. Sadly, jewish refugees were far down christ Roosevelt's list of "collateral damage", Ms Benincasa.

Again, authority was delegated to the office and endorsed by the US Congress. That's the group of people who cannot be shifted either to review, repeal, or replace their "institutional knowledge," much less overide a presidential veto. That is the group of "representatives," for whom voters take no responsibility. For that would surely, poorly reflect the values of the nation whose civic duty, "turn out," is reduced to one ballot every four years.

  4. 1926 Slave Revolt in Sierra Leone
Slavery is an important part of the history of the Sierra Leone Colony and Protectorate.  In those years prior to the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade in 1807 [1792-1807 "settlement"], these settlers from Great Britain, Nova Scotia, and Jamaica struggled to survive. They were resented by the adjacent African and European slave traders. The firm specializes in labor disputes, including helping employers "prepare for and respond to picket lines, strikes, lockouts, and other economic campaigns," as well as to "avoid unionization through positive employee relations." Cozen O'Connor's website notes that the firm's attorneys "manage labor relations with a clear eye toward the bottom line."

Of the $70,150 that had been pledged to Biden's campaign at the time the list was released, $46,850 came from checks signed by Cozen O'Connor employees and their family members.

With Uber Technologies Inc.'s shares plunging nearly 20% below its IPO price on Monday, the stock might be fast approaching a "white knuckle" territory, according to one Wall Street analyst.

After closing down 7.6% on Friday in its trading debut, Uber's stock dropped as much as 13% on Monday in New York, before closing down 11% at $37.10. The initial public offering was priced at $45.

"From a stock perspective, if Uber breaks $35, that is where it starts to get even more white knuckles," Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said in a phone interview. "Right now the bears are winning, and there is nothing to stop these stocks from moving down, especially in a risk-off environment," the analyst added, noting the weakness in ride-sharing peer Lyft Inc., which is also down as much as 7.3%.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a member of the Gang of Eight, said briefings are necessary because informing leaders "is no substitute for the full membership of the Congress." Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868)

From the 1860s through the 1870s the American frontier was filled with Indian wars and skirmishes. In 1865 a congressional committee began a study of the Indian uprisings and wars in the West, resulting in a "Report on the Condition of the Indian Tribes," which was released in 1867. This study and report by the congressional committee led to an act to establish an Indian Peace Commission to end the wars and prevent future Indian conflicts. The U.S. Government set out to establish a series of Indian treaties that would force the Indians to give up their lands and move further west onto reservations. In the spring of 1868 a conference was held at Fort Laramie, in present day Wyoming, which resulted in a treaty with the Sioux. This treaty was to bring peace between the whites and the Sioux who agreed to settle within the Black Hills reservation in the Dakota Territory.

The Black Hills of Dakota are sacred to the Sioux Indians. In the 1868 treaty, signed at Fort Laramie and other military posts in Sioux country, the United States recognized the Black Hills as part of the Great Sioux Reservation, set aside for exclusive use by the Sioux people. In 1874, however, Gen. George A. Custer led an expedition into the Black Hills accompanied by miners who were seeking gold. Once gold was found in the Black Hills, miners were soon moving into the Sioux hunting grounds and demanding protection from the U.S. Army.
