Trump gave 'initial approval' for Iran strikes in response to drone attack | The Guardian |

Donald Trump reportedly gave initial approval for the military to launch strikes on Iran in retaliation for Tehran shooting down a US drone, before pulling back at the last minute.

Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down, the New York Times quoted an unnamed official as saying.

US military and diplomatic officials were expecting strikes on a handful of radar and missile sites after the president's top national security officials and congressional leaders gathered at the White House on Thursday night, the paper said.

It was not clear if strikes would go ahead at a later date.

One of the targets was the S-125 Neva/Pechora surface-to-air missile system, Newsweek quoted a Pentagon official as saying. It reported US believed the system was behind the US drone attack, although Tehran said it had used its "3rd Khordad" air defence system, the Iranian equivalent of the Russian Buk system that downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014.

Trump earlier appeared keen to calm tensions, saying the US Global Hawk drone might have been brought down by a "loose and stupid" Iranian officer without authorisation from Tehran.

"We didn't have a man or woman in the drone. It would have made a big, big difference," Trump said. Asked how the US would respond, he said: "You'll find out."

Iran's IRGC force shoots down intruding US spy drone

Iran sharply condemns 'provocative' US airspace violation, warns aggressors | PressTV - Iran |

Iran has sharply condemned the United States for violating the country's airspace by a spy drone, warning that the aggressors bear the responsibility for repercussions of such "provocative" moves.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi on Thursday reacted to the shooting down of a US surveillance drone flying over Iran's southern skies, voicing the country's "strong protest to such aggressive and provocative measures."

Tehran strongly warns against any "illegal and aggressive" violation of Iranian airspace and territory by any foreign intruder, he added, stressing that all the responsibility for such moves lies on the aggressors.

The statement came after Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said it had shot down an intruding American spy drone in the country's southern coastal province of Hormozgan.

It said the US-made Global Hawk surveillance drone was brought down by its Air Force near the Kouh-e Mobarak region -- which sits in the central district of Jask County -- after the aircraft violated Iranian airspace.

The modern civilization in a digital world is not just too complicated for the individual, there is no leadership or state looking beyond the next "democratic" election. Could that be the reason there is a surge of autocratic states with a leading dictator?

Update [2019-6-21 13:29:33 by Oui]: Both Russia and China warn president Trump not to stir-up trouble with Iran …

Putin open for talks with Trump, warns against force on Iran | AP News |

During the show, Putin warned the U.S. that an attack on Iran would have enormous consequences, adding it would trigger an escalation of hostilities across the region.

“It would be a catastrophe for the region as a minimum,” he said.

Tensions have been mounting recently over last week’s attacks on tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, assaults that Washington has blamed on Iran. Iran has denied the accusations.

Putin noted that Iran has abided by the terms of a landmark nuclear deal despite the U.S. withdrawal from the accord, adding that he considers U.S. sanctions against Iran unfounded.

Asked if Russia could be willing to negotiate a “grand bargain” with the U.S. on Syria and other issues, Putin responded by saying that “we aren’t trading in our allies, our interests and our principles.”

He added, however, that it’s necessary to discuss regional issues with various players, including the United States.

Ahead of the attack on Iraq in March 2003 – an unlawful act by understanding of International Law – both Egypt’s leader Mubarak as the King of Saudi Arabia warned Bush Jr. the consequencies would be like opening Pandora’s Box. They both were correct. The Iraq War and the follow-up Arab Uprising in the MENA states causing over a million deaths, shifted allegiance in favor of Israel and was a direct cause of refugees crossing the Mediterraenian into Europe. This sealed the success of the seeds of Islamophobia sowed after the 9/11 attacks on America … a “Clash of Civilization”. All very predictable and well planned by the powers of the military and intelligence establishment. The wealth of right-wing donors did the rest to destroy democracies across the Western world. Such a shame … Brexit is a major success of the conservative movement. Europe needs someone or a few people to step up to the plate … leadership my friend.

Personally, I'm following the money, and it tells an interesting tale.  We have now passed Memorial Day is the US, a time when gas prices typically drop back down, but 1) they have fallen a lot, and 2) they have fallen in spite of all the sabre-rattling.  That means oil speculators are not driving prices up by grabbing every available barrel in anticipation of the Strait of Hormuz turning into a free fire zone.  Hmm, I wonder if they know something?

US-China trade war, Iran to overshadow G20 talks | DW |

World leaders are gathering in Japan for what is expected to be a highly divisive G20 summit. Tensions over Iran and the long-running trade war between China and the US loom large over this year's meeting.

The G20 summit opened Friday in the western Japanese city of Osaka, with geopolitical tensions and trade set to dominate talks.

The high-stakes meeting of leaders of the world's largest economies runs for two days.

US President Donald Trump met with the host, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, before holding bilateral talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Speaking to reporters, he praised trade ties between the two countries and described Merkel as "a great friend of mine."

Trump says 'We only have one planet' ...

The president echoed those statements, saying the Obama administration wanted to "punish" workers by putting more regulations on industry, but his administration is rolling back those regulations and seeing a strong economy and seeing long-term improvement in air and water in the U.S.

"We have only one America, we have only one planet, that's why every day of my presidency we will fight for a cleaner environment and a better quality of life for every one of our great citizens," he said. "Above all we will remain loyal to the American people and be faithful stewards of God's glorious creation from sea to shining sea."

Why Donald Trump Suddenly Decided to Talk About the Environment | The New Yorker |

"Brazen" might as well be the official motto of the Trump Administration. Even so, it's hard to top the most ecologically unsound President in modern American history giving a speech on Monday touting his environmental record while standing in the East Room of the White House beside David Bernhardt, the former oil lobbyist who is the Interior Secretary, and Andrew Wheeler, the former coal lobbyist who is the administrator of the E.P.A.--both of whom have been trying to gut America's environmental laws. Oh, and on the day when a rainfall described by local authorities as "historic" managed to flood the White House basement.

By now, we are used to Trump's big-lie technique.

Moon of Alabama
Elijah Magnier reported that Trump had asked Iran to allow him to strike back, but was rebuffed:
According to well-informed sources, Iran rejected a proposal by US intelligence - made via a third party - that Trump be allowed to bomb one, two or three clear objectives, to be chosen by Iran, so that both countries could appear to come out as winners and Trump could save face. Iran categorically rejected the offer and sent its reply: even an attack against an empty sandy beach in Iran would trigger a missile launch against US objectives in the Gulf.
An Iranian general yesterday confirmed Magnier's take (also here):
A senior Iranian general has revealed that Washington, through diplomatic channels, recently asked Tehran to allow it to conduct a small-scale operation in the Iranian airspace in order to save its face following the IRGC's shoot-down of a US spy drone.
Brigadier General Gholam Reza Jalali, the Head of Iran's Civil Defence Organization, said Iran vehemently rejected the US request, saying that it will respond to any act of aggression.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran responded that it views any operation as a war and will give a crushing response to it. You may initiate a war but this is Iran which will finish it," he said Sunday.
The idea that the U.S. would ask Iran to allow it to bomb some targets without hitting back sounds crazy.

Dear Mr. Rouhani,
could you please name me three targets in your country that I am allowed to bomb?

It is urgent as I need to look tough on Iran.

Pretty please!

Donald Trump
