Peace At Hand ... Bolton Is OUT!

by Oui Tue Sep 10th, 2019 at 04:52:39 PM EST

Never thought a line of praise for the BIG White Man ...

After the days of Boris' humiliation in the House managed by Bercow, I truly feel more comfortable going into the month of October.

More below the fold ...

Donald Trump:

".... I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service. I will be naming a new National Security Advisor next week."

What brought this about? Does Donald prefer to be friends with Kim and has more travel plans to the Korean peninsula? Is Trump forgetting about Israel, Netanyahu, his settlement on the Golan Heights and the coming war on Iran?

Never mind, Trump is losing Europe (-UK) anyway ... ending the battles in Eastern Ukraine, prisoner swap, release of the MH17 suspect, ... what else can John Bolton mess-up in a single week?

The US president said he "disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions." Bolton, a hawkish neoconservative, has held key positions under the US administrations of both Bushes and Reagan.

Trump fires Iran hawk John Bolton as national security adviser | Times of Israel |

President says he disagreed with hardline security chief; move likely signals administration shifting toward softer line with Tehran amid talk of direct negotiations.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that he had fired National Security Adviser John Bolton, seen as the architect of the White House's hard-line policy toward Iran.

Bolton's exit comes as Trump moves closer to direct talks with Iran after pulling out of the nuclear deal, and likely signals a shift in the administration's strategy toward a softer line with Tehran.

[..]

Bolton indicated he had been caught off guard by the tweets, writing on Twitter that "I offered to resign last night and President Trump said, `Let's talk about it tomorrow.'"

Bolton, a war hawk who previously served as US ambassador to the UN in the George W. Bush administration, had led the administration's "maximum pressure" policy against Iran designed to cripple the country's economy and possibly bring down the ayatollah regime.

He had been widely cheered by Israel's right-wing government, which had pushed the administration to abandon the nuclear deal and take a more hawkish stance toward Iran.

Don't celebrate too soon.

Charles Kupperman, Bolton's deputy and another Neo-Con, has been named Acting National Security Advisor. Kupperman goes back to Little Ronnie RayGuns (pew, pew, pew) and His Cold Warriors.

So Donald is working his way through the same gaggle of goons that gave us Little Georgie's Great Mesopotamian Adventure.

About the only thing you could say for Trump is that he was, temperamentally, more of an isolationist and less of a neo-con globalist interventionist than Hillary, and so his appointment of Bolton in the first place was somewhat odd. Bolton "there never was a US led war that Bolton didn't like" is the classic interventionist and Trump boasted that it was he who often had to restrain his Nat. Security Advisor's wilder schemes.

That said, Trump is notoriously flaky, from day to day, and open to all kinds of crazy ideas put into his head by key advisors, notably Jared Kushner. I still expect an October war with Iran to help him secure re-election...

In a typical move, Trump was using Bolton's penchant to dress him down in public:

`Is Ireland one of those countries you want to invade': Trump once `joked' John Bolton wants `to nuke them all'

In a conversation that included the Irish prime minister, Trump asked Bolton, "John, is Ireland one of those countries you want to invade?"

The scene was during the annual St. Patrick's Day visit. Typically it's a photo-op, a handshake, and men in green ties with a shamrock sprig in their jacket pocket. Trump managed to turn it into an awkward scene for everyone.

According to the report, Trump likes to interact in this way with Bolton, and at times, that involves awkward comments in front of foreign heads of state.

Netanyahu rushed off Ashdod stage after Gaza rockets fired at city | JPost |

"If Hamas is shooting at us in a live broadcast, you can understand they don't want us here," Netanyahu told Likud supporters. "So prepare for another one. We'll evacuate, and then we'll return."

Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman was evacuated from a party event at a restaurant in Ashdod. Liberman did not go to a shelter or a safe room, but rather finished his remarks and then went to his car.

Liberman said the incident "proves that Netanyahu's policies, which mean surrendering to terrorism, are bankrupt. We must change direction."

Blue and White MK Gabi Ashkenazi was speaking in Ashkelon when the sirens went off.

Netanyahu pre-election gambit falls flat on right | Asia Times |

A pre-election appeal by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to fall flat, as domestic rivals expressed scant enthusiasm for his latest annexation pledge, which settlers said did not go far enough.

The rallying cry to "redraw" Israel's borders was quickly overshadowed by news from Washington that US National Security Advisor John Bolton had been fired and Trump was ready to meet his Iranian counterpart "without preconditions" on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly later this month.

The Tuesday address, billed as a "dramatic announcement" by Netanyahu, came after weeks of leaks insinuating that an official annexation of the settlement blocs would be fully backed by the Trump administration, leading some to conclude that a far-reaching geopolitical move was in the offing.

[...]

More critically, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters that President Trump would be willing to meet with the president of Israel's arch-rival Iran "with no preconditions" - a gambit opposed by the newly-ousted Bolton.

The messaging from Washington appeared to dim hopes that Trump would provide Netanyahu with a diplomatic pre-election boost comparable to the movement of the US embassy to Jerusalem or the recognition of Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights.

In Israel, the political opposition called out Netanyahu for what they deemed a cheap gambit for right-wing votes in the guise of a policy speech.

Ambassador John Bolton endorses five incumbents for reelection

Former Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, Ambassador John R. Bolton, announced today the resumption of the John Bolton PAC and the John Bolton Super PAC.

He also announced the John Bolton PAC's endorsement of the following five federal candidates running in 2020: Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (IL-16), and Rep. Lee Zeldin (NY-01). Additionally, the John Bolton PAC will contribute $10,000 to each candidate's primary and general election for a total of $50,000. Ambassador Bolton has endorsed each of these candidates in previous election cycles.

"The John Bolton PAC and John Bolton Super PAC seek a strong, clear, and dependable US national security policy, resting on constancy and resolve," said Ambassador Bolton. "The experience that these incumbent members of Congress have provides them with a remarkable understanding and knowledge of the threats we face from international terrorism and rogue regimes such as Iran and North Korea."

Yemeni drones hit world's largest refinery in Saudi Arabia

PressTV: Yemeni drones have hit two oil facilities of Saudi Arabia's state oil giant Aramco in the country's east, causing huge fires before dawn on Saturday.

A spokesman for Saudi Arabia's interior ministry said in a statement that the attacks targeted two Aramco factories in Abqaiq and Khurais.

The statement did not identify the source of the attacks, but Yemen's Houthi movement later claimed responsibility in an announcement on Al Masirah TV.

The movement's military spokesman General Yahya Sare'e said 10 drones were deployed against the sites in Abqaiq and Khurais, and pledged to widen the range of attacks on Saudi Arabia.

"This was one of the largest operations which our forces have carried out deep inside Saudi Arabia. It came after careful intelligence and cooperation with honorable and free people inside Saudi Arabia," he said without elaboration.

Non-state actors now have the capability to destroy point targets, a military asset formerly only available for state actors.  This ability destabilizes the military dynamic of the Middle East by allowing non-state actors, e.g., Hezbollah, to attack targets inside of Israel, e.g., Israeli Air Force bases.  It also destabilizes the economic dynamic of the Middle East by allowing non-state actors, e.g., Hezbollah, to attack the infrastructure of Israel, e.g., electric power plants.

Expect this kind of Aktion to rapidly move to other areas of the world where a minority have deeply felt grievances and a history of violence to express those grievances, e.g., Kashmir, insurgencies against foreign invasion, e.g., Iraq, and terrorist groups having territorial ambitions, e.g., ISIS.

MBS tells Trump Saudi 'willing and able' to respond to attacks | Al Jazeera |

The Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, received a phone call from U.S. president Donald Trump after attacks on two Saudi oil facilities set up by Yemenite rebels Houthi. The news was announced by the official news agency of Riad, Spa.

According to a statement by the Saudi embassy in Washington, DC, Trump told MBS that the US was ready to cooperate with the kingdom to protect its security in the wake of the drone attacks.

In the phone call, Trump also told the crown prince the attacks hurt the US and global economies, the SPA said in an Arabic-language statement

The Houthis, who have been fighting a Saudi-UAE-led coalition in an ongoing civil war in Yemen since 2015, took responsibility for the early morning attacks, which involved 10 drones and caused fires at the facilities at Abqaiq, the world's largest oil processing complex, and Khurais, a major oilfield.

As Iran-backed Yemeni rebels claimed responsibility for an attack on one of the world's largest oil processing facilities in Saudi Arabia, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday blamed Tehran directly.

"Amid all the calls for de-escalation, Iran has now launched an unprecedented attack on the world's energy supply," he said on Twitter. "There is no evidence the attacks came from Yemen."
