Thursday preview screenings of "Joker" brought in $13.3 million. That's a record for the month of October, beating out Sony's "Venom," which opened last year with $10 million in previews and went on to have an opening weekend domestic total of $80 million, which is also a record.

As Ad Astra inched past the $20 million mark in its fourth day of domestic release, the odds of being a financial win for Fox and Disney are not in its favor. Yes, it is a visual wonder, and I would argue it has enough action and pulpy material to satiate those mostly showing up for blockbuster thrills. However, James Gray's mix of Apocalypse Now and Solaris was never going to be as inherently commercial as something like The Martian or even Passengers. That said, with $46 million worldwide so far on a budget of around $100 million (thanks to reshoots following poor test screenings), the (rather good) Brad Pitt sci-fi melodrama is just the latest movie about toxic masculinity to disappoint or outright fail at the box office.

Lecter, just caught my eye.

Conjuring Hannibal Lecter, the master criminal who debuted in Silence of The Lambs. I have been as perplexed by theories of abnormal psych as the conspicuous elasticity of "normal" psychology since I started reading Freud years ago. Anyway, I planted a seed so to speak in reddit a couple of weeks ago during the Pocahontas and "brownface" revival, mentioning Buffalo Bill, the "unsub" hunched over a sewing machine. That image emerged from me repertoire of American pulp folklore --maybe attatchment disorder binds their pathology? I dunno. It's unfashionable wih the pros now who dispense pills repress everything, and I can't recall details in Harris' novels. But suddenly, mirthlessly the moment seemed to exemplify, or express rather rudely, an invidious desire in the "we" to assume or stake a claim on skin evoking dark passion, dark thoughts, dark deeds, and persecution as is convenient. This sort of crime of opportunity if you will is endemic and cheap.

What value "fine tuning" racial recognition features subtracts from delusions of danger gripping America's progressive tinkers is difficult to fathom.

Actually, if he runs true to form, his tenure as commissioner of EU industrial policy will be marked by a wave of suicides throughout European industry.

He's a "lean management" fanatic, which means squeezing employees dry and discarding them. His tenure as CEO of France Telecom resulted in an "enterprise culture" which generated a wave of suicides - luckily for him, after he left - for which his successors are currently being tried for moral harassment.

If it could be seen to help, I have endured a very extended childhood, well into my 40s. Or at least I was childish enough for it be seen as such.

Then a ridiculous and embarrassing teenage. Now, 40 years later than most people I find myself a "young" adult, ready to contribute. Just as I fade into obsolescence.

Someone who hasn't screened the drama attempts a review of "Watchmen" by consulting with someone who hasn't screened it either. First episode aired 20 October. It's up to E03. Connelly's an odd choice as Gerald Horne, prolific historian of US militancy--of which Tulsa 1921--is a frequent guest on Marc Steiner's shows as well as other networks.

HBO's Watchmen Tackles the 1921 Tulsa Massacre, not really

The setting is a fictitious town in Oklahoma, ostensibly 2019, interleaved by anachronistic subplots of "master-slave" relationships--so far an English manor, a NAZI secretarial pool. The contemporary characters are masked vigilantes (anti-heroes) policing those remnants of "Americana" with which they strongly identify (antagonists). Elements of the dystopian society include the trailer park "Nixonville", a museum to the Tulsa massacre funded by federal gov "redarations", DNA kiosks, bizarre climate phenomena, fascist digital tech "balanced" with non-lethal weapons, foster care for children of adult Nixonville residents, HAZMAT contraband, and mundane "middle-class" appointments of ethnic, professional, and domestic tranquility à la Stepford. Last week the protagonist (uniformed for police raids as a badass prioress) discovered that her mentor in the PD was lynched by a cryptic, 117-year-old stranger in a wheelchair.

In the 1990s NATO was a walking dead man ... was saved by Article 5 plea from the USA after 9/11 ... fighting a full blown war and never ending "War on Terror" ... NATO regrouped to become proxy to fight wars for American Capitalism and expansion ... creating adversaries to increase weaponry and spending ... not heeding Eisenhower's Cold War warning of the military establishment. Time to rethink priorities to save the planet ... not increasing capaciteit to destroy our planet. Fortunately nr. 1 world power USA is exposing itself by electing a mad man as president ... the planet on precipice of destruction .. time to rethink European defense and Europe's interest. 😖🍀😄

Sanders's positions on many difficult issues are commendable, but his real impact has been as a reaction to the cynical climate which threatens the effectiveness of the democratic system. His energy, candor, conviction, and ability to bring people together stand against the current of opportunism, moral compromise, and partisanship which runs rampant on the American political scene. He and a few others like him have the power to restore principle and leadership in Congress and to win back the faith of a voting public weary and wary of political opportunism. Above all, I commend Bernie Sanders for giving me an answer to those who say American young people see politics as a cesspool of corruption, beyond redemption. I have heard that no sensible young person today would want to give his or her life to public service. I can personally assure you this is untrue.
