How urban farms could solve future food problems

Tenth of an acre permaculture garden

Editorial Comment:  I remember that New Alchemy Institute once produced a study that showed you could grow enough vegetables for a person for a year on about a thirteenth of an acre but my memory may be faulty and it was back in the 1970s.

10th Amendment news:

The next target in the climate-change debate: your gas stove

Dozens of cities in ["]liberal-leaning["] states such as California, Washington, and Massachusetts are studying proposals to ban or limit the use of natural gas in commercial and residential buildings.
They want buildings switched to electric power from a grid that is increasingly powered by renewable energy. U.S. utilities currently derive about 35% of their electricity from gas but have also nearly doubled their use of renewable fuels in the past decade, from 9% to 17% of all power, according to the EIA.

Residential and commercial buildings account for about 12% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. They are also crucial to natural gas sales: Direct gas consumption amounted to about 8.45 trillion cubic feet in 2018, rivaling the 10.63 tcf used by utilities to power the grid, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

After the gas explosions in the Merrimack Valley of MA in 2018, Mothers Out Front and other groups gave people without the ability to cook induction hot plates.  I bought an Instant Pot, a programmable electric pressure cooker, last January and have been very happy with how it performs.

There are readily available and affordable alternatives to natural gas cooking which, incidentally, also reduce the indoor air pollution natural gas cooking produces.

Of course. I grew up in an electric range/oven, mixed fuel HH (Mich), rented with electric for years (coil-NY and glass plate/convection-UK), but never used gas 'til moving into low-cost MD housing (last 10/55 years).

But for bux, I would have replaced all appliances yesterday--all 20+ y.o. Anyway, I live by myself with vanishing KwH and Th per month. Admittedly that's no solution to scale.

One of the larger barriers to modifying emissions behaviors is reversing 20+ astro-turfed cheap, "clean" gas sales to homeowners who need, NEED!, TO GRILL their food.

EU countries have 'no concrete plans' to phase out fossil fuel subsidies: report
Only nine EU countries have reiterated their commitment to end fossil fuel subsidies as part of their national plans, according to the analysis by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), Friends of the Earth Netherlands, and Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe.
Worse, five EU countries - the UK, Germany, Greece, Poland, and Slovenia - are even looking to introduce new subsidies by 2030, many of which are labelled as 'low-carbon transition support'. This includes a Greek scheme aimed at replacing diesel boilers with gas-fired ones and funding for liquefied natural gas transportation in Poland, the researchers found.

"We have to put a price on carbon!"

But let's not mention the existing subsidies for fossil fools.
