United States of America Declared a Bandit State

by Oui Sat Jan 4th, 2020 at 10:16:10 AM EST

Europe and nations across the globe should express their disgust with the acts of banditry and bullying of the President . There should be no room for acts of fascism humanity had hoped to have left behind the genocides of the 20th century that tore up society. The lone action of the world's most powerful nation in terms of the economy and military, should be a shining example, not the acts crossing International Law and the Geneva Conventions. Friends of America or no friends of human kind by keeping silent or going through the motions of criticism without sanctioning barbaric acts.

Ever since the attacks of 9/11, the U.S. and allied nations have torn up existing laws in order to get the "bad guys". By doing so, terrorism across the globe has flourished and increased a tenfold with over a million deaths of innocent civilians: fathers, mothers and children. This got to stop NOW before the community of nations are dragged into an all consuming nuclear stand-off or a Third World War.

Planet Earth is in jeopardy, destruction will be complete once the Middle East explodes into a war of aggression. Members of U.S. Congress are a representation of the American people and are in many ways more hawkish on foreign policy than the President himself ... a perpetuum motion of destruction lies ahead of us. Democracy as was intended by the Founding Fathers has floundered for decades ... the Trump campaign won over the Electoral College but the popular vote was for the candidate of the Democrats Hillary Clinton by over three million votes.

More below the fold ...

Frontpaged - Frank Schnittger

The American domestic agenda is what the presidential election is about, so is the election of Senators and the House of Representatives. Foreign policy plays an insignificant role in the debate inside America ... the knowledge of International law, diplomacy and other cultures of the other 95% of the global population is just as minute. The man in the White House is disadvantaged to play the role of leader of the "Free World". It is better that other nations read the ominous signs of internal rot that is here to stay for at least another decade. From most polling across the Western World, the conservative agenda is bound by age and so are the political establishment that lacks renewal from young people.

The whole era of a struggle against terror and outside threats to the heart of America, has placed the US military of the Pentagon and the dozens of Intelligence agencies in the forefront to establish foreign policy. Too often through acts of barbarism that has been deemed acceptable by a growing number of countries. The voice of the United Nations has been set aside. The good intentions from the ashes of destruction after WWII have been totally forgotten.

In Europe, the founding of a European Economic Community the EEC of six nations has been transformed into a capitalist oriented oligarch with a goal of expansion. Too often the new goal "to establish democracy" has been uttered. Meanwhile corruption was rampant and spread quicker than the addition of "failed" states of Eastern Europe, the former Soviet satellite states. This introduced internal warfare which replaced the intent of cooperation to establish a peaceful Europe.

The basis of a moral leading organization, the Four Freedoms, has been cast aside a long time ago.

After the fall of Communism in 1989, another strong impulse and emotion of a free people across all of Europe gripped the citizens of those new nations. Unfortunately, the European Union has not met that challenge and failed in its mission. After the 9/11 attacks, the Western world became consumed with hatred of the Muslim world. Not just the 19 Sunni terrorists who were held responsible and the leadership of Al Qaeda in Tora Bora, but all of the Islamic world got the predicate of "terrorists". Islamophobia took hold all over Europe and in America. This has been exploited by politicians who are in it for personal gain and getting a hold of "power". This is the situation in Europe as it is in Washington DC.

That shining light on the hill has long been extinguished. The White House has become part of the dark might that has influence across the globe. The days of Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy have become part of ancient history. Unfortunately, the role of vengeance for deeds many decades ago still play a prominent role in US Foreign Policy s we have seen in the past week versus the Islamic Republic of Iran with 70 million citizens.

A somber analysis from someone who has been an optimist all my life of 75 years. Unfortunately, reality has not often proved me wrong in my lifetime. Weekly I do volunteer work for youth in the age between 11 and 17 years old, this has kept me optimistic ... and I still am for the new generations. There is more convincing evidence the older generation will have destroyed the planet before these boys and girls have a chance to develop their talents and become mature adults to participate in society to contribute in the challenges the world imposes on them.

A unipolar power centered in Washington DC may become a catalyst for the destruction of our planet.

There are some levelheaded analysts who are able to define human values, International Law and how nations should deal with one another in times of peace and war. America has been on a downward sliding scale during the last decades and expedited by the 9/11 attacks and its aftermath.

Suleimani killing the latest in a long, grim line of US assassination efforts

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, denounced the assassination as an "act of international terrorism".

Vipin Narang, a political scientist at MIT, said the killing "wasn't deterrence, it was decapitation".

There has been no shortage of US interventions over the past half century that have attempted - and in some cases succeeded - in removing foreign adversaries through highly dubious legal or ethical means. The country has admitted to making no fewer than eight assassination attempts on Castro, though the real figure was probably much higher.

William Blum, the author of Killing Hope: US Military and CIA Interventions Since World War II, points to a litany of American sins from invasions, bombings, overthrowing of governments, assassinations to torture and death squads. "It's not a pretty picture," is his blunt conclusion.

The CIA was deemed to have run so amok in the 1960s and 70s that in 1975 the Church committee investigated a numerous attempted assassinations on foreign leaders including Patrice Lumumba, Rafael Trujillo of the Dominican Republic, Vietnam's Ngo Dinh Diem, and of course Castro. In the fallout, President Ford banned US involvement in foreign political assassinations.

Brussels sets straight historical wrong over Patrice Lumumba killing

DR Congo today – Hero Patrice Lumumba remembered | EcoNews |

The ban didn't last long. Since 1976 the US has continued to be engaged in, or accused of, efforts to eradicate foreign leaders.

Ronald Reagan launched bombing raids in 1986 targeting Libya's Muammar Gaddafi. As recently as two years ago North Korea alleged that the CIA tried to assassinate its leader Kim Jong-un.

But most of the interventions in the modern era have been covert and conducted beneath the radar. Where they have been proclaimed publicly, they have tended to target non-state actors operating in militias or militant groups like Islamic State.

Despite such reticence, Mary Ellen O'Connell, a professor of international law at the University of Notre Dame, draws a direct line between earlier US administrations and the convention-shredding unpredictability of Trump. She said the advent of the unmanned drone in 2000 put the US on a slippery slope towards the current crisis.

The first deployment of a drone as an assassination tool was ordered by Bill Clinton in an effort to get Bin Laden. The first successful "targeted killing", as it is now called, came soon after, carried out by the Bush administration in Yemen.

Obama inherited Bush's widespread use of drone killings and increased their frequency tenfold, while seeking to give them a veneer of legal respectability with the secret internal "targeted killing memos". Those documents argued that drone assassinations were justified under international law as self-defense against future terrorist attacks - a rationale that has been widely disputed as a misreading of the UN charter.

Mike Pence pushes 9/11 conspiracy theories to justify Soleimani killing

In defense of his administration's decision to assassinate Qassem Soleimani, Mike Pence has been promoting conspiracy theories that link September 11 terrorists to Iran.

In a series of tweets, the US vice-president called Soleimani "an evil man who was responsible for killing thousands of Americans". Among other things, Pence insisted that the general "assisted in the clandestine travel to Afghanistan of 10 of the 12 terrorists who carried out the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States", misstating the number of 9/11 hijackers - there were 19 - and insinuating Soleimani's involvement despite a lack of evidence.

Foreign policy experts were quick to point out on social media that Pence's assertions were unsubstantiated.

Pompeo: We Offer Iran Freedom | Tikun Olam |

Pompeo offered Iran freedom from the barrel of a gun.  And mighty persuasive it was too.

He gave an interview earlier today in which he recounted a fever-dream version of the aftermath of the Soleimani assassination, which bore no resemblance to any reality we know:

Pompeo: I saw last night there was dancing in the streets in parts of Iraq.  We have every expectation that people, not only in Iraq, but in Iran will view the American action last night as giving them freedom.  Freedom to have the opportunity for success and prosperity for their nations.  And while the political leadership may not want that the people in these nations will demand it.

    Interviewer: We'll see.

These Pakistanis don't appear to be dancing in the streets. (Abdul Majeed/AFP via Getty)

The only dancing in the streets of Iraq was done by the Sunni minority, which ruled the country while Saddam's Baath Party held power.  And lost it once we overthrew him and dissolved the Baath infrastructure.  If there is a last bastion of ISIS remaining on Iraqi territory, they'd indeed be celebrating, since Soleimani was their fiercest enemy (and supposedly ours as well).

Unfortunately I think most democrats in Congress are complicit through the defence of Obama's drones and continued war in Iraq and Syria. Among the presidential candidates it's Sanders and Gabbard that can hit on the issues while what I have seen from the rest is an acceptance as such of the assassination of a foreign emissary and his hosts in a country where the US are supposed to be guests, through complaints about the forms - informing Congress, etc.

But yes, here is a high crime committed in broad daylight  and Trump is bragging about it. Here is what he should be impeached over.

Lebanon - A country held hostage | DW |

In Lebanon, no important political decisions are taken any more without Hezbollah, the Shiite "party of God". Since the end of the civil war in 1990, multi-ethnic and multi-religious Lebanon has been exposed to growing political divisions.

Every battle, every conflict or war strengthens the Shia fighting force across the region from Teheran, Baghdad, Damascus to Beirut. A new cycle of hostilities will not deliver a winner, only losers.

Peace Factory: Israel loves Iran

Outraged Americans condemn US actions in Iraq and Iran: 'Enough with this nonsense' | USA Today |

Demonstrators took to the streets across the U.S. on Saturday to protest the Trump administration's killing of a top Iranian general and decision to send about 3,000 more soldiers to the Middle East.

"No justice, no peace. U.S. out of the Middle East," about 200 protesters chanted near the Trump Tower in Chicago. Protesters held signs that read "Stop bombing Iraq" and "U.S. troops out of Iraq."

More than 70 planned protests were being spearheaded by Act Now to Stop War and End Racism, a U.S.-based anti-war coalition, in conjunction with other organizations. They seek withdrawal of U.S.troops from Iraq and end to what it says is a war on Iran, according to spokesperson Walter Smolarek.

In Philadelphia, he said about 500 protesters took part. Demonstrations also took place outside the White House and in New York City's Times Square.

Cincinnati protesters chanted, "Trump says more war. We say no war," and "No more U.S. attacks. Iraq, we got your back."

"We will have that resolution coming up SOON under the leadership of congresswoman Barbara Lee," Pelosi said during a press briefing in the Capitol.

The comments came just hours before the House was scheduled to vote on a separate resolution designed to limit President Trump's unilateral military confrontations with Iran. That measure, sponsored by CIA Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), is a response to Trump's decision last week to launch a drone strike in Baghdad that killed a top Iranian security commander.

U.S. Congress: Assassination splits Israel supporters on party lines | Mondoweiss |

The neoconservative Foundation for the Defense of Democracies sees a tremendous upside in the attack. One of its fellows, Reuel Marc Gerecht, says, "This ends any possibility of nuclear negotiations."

Clinton's recent foreign policy Trump-bashing speech was designed in part to appeal to globalist "neocons" like Stephens, Max Boot, Reuel Marc Gerecht, and Robert Kagan, who have all said they will support her over Trump. And Dov Zakheim writes that Clinton has now become "the darling of the neocons." [Source: New Jacksonian Blog - June 2016]

But Democratic supporters of Israel have voiced mild to harsh criticisms. Even the hawkish Eliot Engel says the assassination will have "unpredictable" consequences and endanger the lives of Americans around the world. Speaking on the Senate floor, Chuck Schumer criticized the decision as thoughtless and possibly illegal, leading to a "potentially endless conflagration in the Middle East."

Schumer went on, "The risk of a much longer military engagement in the Middle East is acute and immediate. This action may well have brought our nation closer to another endless war."

Another Israel supporter was even more scathing. Sen. Chris van Hollen of Maryland says the attack could close "the door on the Iran deal." In a speech on the Senate floor, he also said the attack makes Americans less safe and blames "warmongering ideologues."

Joshua Landis and "Christina Lin": social media influencers, but whose blue check payroll?

US controls most of oil-rich Persian Gulf via proxies
Landis is hooked into anti-Trump-KSA-911 agita seeping out of de basement of WH intrigues, devoid of OPEC geopolitical consequences. Meanwhile, Russian corps ("oligarchs") control oil and gas "assets" across the Levant. (I've posted recent trade data this weekend, to emphasize.) This is the principle rationale--besides ghosted ideological enmity to ahh CAPITALISTs--behind ahh actual Kremlin military and diplomatic intervention in "US-backed" hostilities toward Syria, Iran, Koreas--indeed EU, S. American and African continents--devoid of BRIC geopolitical consequences.
"China might take Iran's side in a war with US"
Not going to happen. If I were a betting sumbitch, I'd bet "Christina Lin" is a US citizen who remembers the PLA's last totalitarian adventure as sweeping detritus in Hong Kong and wishes the CCP will reveal its INSCRUTABLE, ANTI-CHRISTIAN IMPERIAL ambition per Hoover analytics. Forgeting that PRC published a position paper --in ENGLISH--opposed to US unilateral politics for like the nth time, is like forgetting that Barnier has a job to ensure the "orderly exit" of Brown's "North Korea". Also, forget that China conceded to US sanctions against Iran, when US sanction "waivers" were turning fast and furious. The CCP is not now going to choose "sides" with US wtf, but it certainly will trade ahh tech for in-kind consideration from all other comers.

    A Bandit State

As you rightly judged, it's my own conclusion based on 15 years blogging on FP issues. Having lived 10 yrs in the states during the 1960s, I have had a close interest in US society and politics. Have resided in Europe for the 50 years, I've have witnessed and experienced the downfall of global symbol of Freedom. I happened to be on an extended holiday in the US, watching for many hours U.S. Congressional Watergate hearings with a great Democrat Sam Ervin. The downfall of "Tricky" Dick Nixon, his lies and deceit made a deep impression on me. "I'm NOT a crook" was a sign of infamy for the Office of the US President. A hard Civics lesson for me and at the time a greater disillusion than the Vietnam War!

At the time, there were many unknowns about deceit and corruption in US politics. We were spoonfed the allegiance to the flag every morning at school and the evil of Communism as the Red Creeping Monster.

Witnessed the Nixon-Kennedy debate in 1960, felt the emotions and fear of the Cuba crisis, the B-52s stationed at Lambert Field in St. Louis, readied for take-off to destroy the Soviet Republic of Communism. We had the hope of the Kennedy afministration, Peace Corps, Berlin speech, mayor Willy Brandt ... destroyed by an assassin's bullet in a hostile Dallas, TX, home-state of VP Johnson. In 1968, the murders of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy sealed my decision to emigrate to Europe.

We had no idea what held up the Paris Peace Talks - the Kisdinger notes - and got a Republican Nixon elected. The brutal Vietnam War escalated with the disastrous Christmas carpet bombing of Hanoi in 1972.

The hearings of the Church Commission I have missed and the fact the one-man assassin theory of 11-22-1963 was rejected by U.S. Congress.

Ever since the fall of Communism, the United States has failed as leader of the "Free World" on numerous occasions. The bullying and harsh economic sanctions on "rogue states" by its own definition, is mostly contrary to International Law, Geneva or The Hague Conventions.

The Bush-Obama-Trump administrations have by-passed the United Nations and have often put their peacekeepers in harm's way by hostile, military acts. The US has no regard for human life, except of the unborn. 😥

A "bandit state" designation is mostly reserved for a kleptocracy ... one can readily find many sources describing American exceptionalism and inequality as a robbery of the less fortunate.

Searching for a "bandit state" in a political sense, I came across the Nuremberg and Tokio trials of war crimes and crimes against humanity. In the last two decades, the US alone, or in a coalition, have been responsible for major conflicts of choice causing countless civilian deaths. The robbery of Human life is sufficient for me to designate the US a bandit state.

.... and I haven't mentioned the many interventions in the Americas, death squads, El Salvador, Chile with Allende and the Kissinger doctrine, dictatorships, training SOA, CIA assassinations and the drone as weapon of choice.

I was writing as an editor front paging a story, not as a blogger questioning the designation. Normally, in an article entitled "US declared..." you would expect to learn in the first paragraph or two who had so declared the USA. If it is the author making the declaration, I would expect the title to be something like "The USA is now acting as a Bandit State." It matters who is making the declaration: The UN, EU, Iran, Iraq, Biden, some academic authority or the author? Just looking for clarity.

The US Armed Forces and US leaders got off without sanctions for years of torture, detention in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also the drone killings on such a scale with deaths of countless civilians are against human right and constitute war crimes.

In the end, when someone is court-martialed, a president like idiot Trump grants a pardon and fires the commander responsible for a courageous act of justice. In all these cases, it's an International Court of Law which should step in ... the US chickened out and live their military and political lives with impunity.

Boris Johnson: Qassem Suleimani was threat to all our interests | The Guardian |

Boris Johnson has said that assassinated Iranian general Qassem Suleimani was "a threat to all our interests", and that while "we will not lament his death" he called for de-escalation from all sides.

The prime minister spoke to the US president, Donald Trump, on Sunday after the US drone strike on Iran's top military leader on Friday.

Johnson said he would be speaking to Iraq "to support peace and stability" after its parliament called for the expulsion of foreign troops, including British soldiers working against Islamic State (Isis).

"General Qassem Suleimani posed a threat to all our interests and was responsible for a pattern of disruptive, destabilising behaviour in the region," Johnson said.

"Given the leading role he has played in actions that have led to the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians and western personnel, we will not lament his death.

"It is clear however that all calls for retaliation or reprisals will simply lead to more violence in the region and they are in no one's interest."

Photographer Nick Ut, who captured the image that would become an icon of the Vietnam War, brought the injured children in the photo to a hospital in Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City. The girl, Kim Phuc, survived but with serious burns that required multiple operations. She was later sought out and used as state propaganda by the the Communist regime in Vietnam.

In 1992, on a flight from Cuba to Russia, Kim Phuc and her husband exited the plane while stopping over in Canada and requested political asylum. In 1997 she became a Canadian citizen and founded the Kim Foundation International, which offers medical and psychological assistance to children traumatized by war.

Their dismay turned to anger after they realized that no troops had been assigned to protect their ministries, and that there were no immediate plans to commit forces to guard "static sites." At the time, the only governemtn building protected by American troops, other than the Republican Palace, was the Ministry of Oil. Two weeks earlier, ORHA ministers had worked up a list of sites in Baghdad that needed security. Atop the list was the Central Bank. Then came the National Museum. The Oil Ministry was at the bottom. Weeks later, OHRA personnel discovered that the military had failed to transmit the list to ground commanders in Baghdad.

Even as the impact of the looting was becoming clear, ORHA could not prod the military into action. When Barbara Bodine, a veteran diplomat and Arabic speaker who was to become the interim mayor of Baghdad, got word from and Iraqi contact that looters were perilously close to breaking into a vault under the Central Bank that housed a priceless collection of Assyrian gold, she fired off an e-mail to the U.S. Central Command. The exchange, as she and a State Department official in Washington who was copied on the messages remember ti went something like this:

BODINE: The Assyrian vault under the Central Bank is in immediate danger of being looted. We need to get on this.
CENTCOM: What's in the Assyrian vault?
    BODINE: Assyrian treasure.
    CENTCOM: What's an Assyrian treasure?
BODINE: Go read the early chapters of your Bible. It's old stuff. It's realy, really valuable. We need to save it.
CENTCOM: Okay. We'll see ehat we can do.

There were no apologies from the military. Rumsfeld's war plan did not include enough troops to guard government installations in Baghdad and other major cities. Asked about the looting, he brushed it off with the now-famous phrase "Freedom's untidy." [Chandrasekaran: 41]

    Craig Murray's recollection is dim.
I am not inventing the Bethlehem Doctrine. It has been the formal legal justification for drone strikes and targeted assassinations by the Israeli, US and UK governments for a decade [?]. Here it is in academic paper form, published by Bethlehem after he left government service (the form in which it is adopted by the US, UK and Israeli Governments is classified information).

I don't doubt that fellow was a significant contributor from 10 Downing to the Bush Doctrine, fulminated by vanguard of The Project for a New American Century (PNAC, 1998). The WH published this novelty of "legal" warfare departing christ Grotius, Sep 2002, as US "THE NATIONAL SECURITY STRATEGY, of which "V. Prevent Our Enemies from Threatening Us, Our Allies, and Our Friends with Weapons of Mass Destruction".

For centuries, international law recognized that nations need not suffer an attack before they can lawfully take action to defend themselves against forces that present an imminent danger of attack.
We must adapt the concept of imminent threat to the capabilities and objectives of today's adversaries. Rogue states and terrorists do not seek to attack us using conventional means. They know such attacks would fail. Instead, they rely on acts of terror and, potentially, the use of weapons of mass destruction--weapons that can be easily concealed, delivered covertly, and used without warning.
The United States has long maintained the option of preemptive actions to counter a sufficient threat to our national security. The greater the threat, the greater is the risk of inaction-- and the more compelling the case for taking anticipatory action to defend ourselves, even if uncertainty remains as to the time and place of the enemy's attack. To forestall or prevent such hostile acts by our adversaries, the United States will, if necessary, act preemptively.

The United States will not use force in all cases to preempt emerging threats, nor should nations use preemption as a pretext for aggression. Yet in an age where the enemies of civilization openly and actively seek the world's most destructive technologies, the United States cannot remain idle while dangers gather. We will always proceed deliberately, weighing the consequences of our actions....

See Jay Bybee (now of the 9th Circ.), memorandum opinion for details: "AUTHORITY OF THE PRESIDENT UNDER DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL LAW TO USE MILITARY FORCE AGAINST IRAQ", 23 Oct 2002 and Yoo, "The President's Constitutional Authority to Conduct Military Operations Against Terrorists and Nations Supporting Them", 25 Sep 2002; the cretins Delahunty and Yoo's exegesis, "The 'Bush Doctrine': Can preventative war be justified?" In the past hours I read the assassination of Qassem Soleimani has been ab objective for some time. Especially former CIA chief Pompeo wanted it and he had Trump's ear.

There was no scrutiny of the consequences as would be with such an major decision, but Trump kept the final decision within a small circle of his close advisors (Netanyahu had been notified and he was for). Only recent calculus and the events after the attack killing one US contractor, the choice was put forward. With the US Embassy under threat after the US military retaliation killing 25 Iraq's, the final decision got all votes to GO. It was a punishment and the execution of choice, not an imminent threat.

Doesn't meet UN convention or International Law? No one involved cared about that. Typical reactie as given by Dominic Raab yesterday, I'm not in a position to question the tactical or strategic decision of the US president. Would the US have bombed targets inside Iran if the Iran retaliation would have killed one US soldier? HELL YES! We've got a BIGGER stick than them.

Unidentified planes hit Iraqi militiamen in Syria, killing 8, 10 Jan
An Iraqi security official and another official, who was from the Iran-backed Iraqi militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, said warplanes targeted two vehicles carrying missiles on the Syrian side of the border. The strike was most likely carried out by Israeli warplanes, they said, but offered no evidence.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment. The Pentagon did not respond to a request for comment on the Syria bombing, which comes at a time of high tension between Iran and the U.S.
The U.S. carried out military strikes in the area on Dec. 29, killing 25 members of an Iran-backed Iraqi militia, in retaliation to a rocket attack on a military base in Iraq that killed a U.S. contractor. The U.S. blamed that attack on a Iranian-backed Iraqi militia.

David Rockefeller & October Surprise Case

From the Archive: David Rockefeller's death at age 101 brought effusive eulogies, but no recollection of his mysterious role in the Iran hostage crisis of 1980, which helped sink President Carter's reelection, writes Robert Parry.

By Robert Parry (Originally published April 15, 2005)

On March 23, 1979, late on a Friday afternoon, Chase Manhattan Bank Chairman David Rockefeller and his longtime aide Joseph Verner Reed arrived at a town house in the exclusive Beekman Place neighborhood on New York's East Side. They were met inside by a small, intense and deeply worried woman who had seen her life turned upside down in the last two months.

Iran's Princess Ashraf, the strong-willed twin sister of the Iran's long-time ruler, had gone from wielding immense behind-the-scenes clout in the ancient nation of Persia to living in exile - albeit a luxurious one. With hostile Islamic fundamentalists running her homeland, Ashraf also was troubled by the plight of her ailing brother, the ousted Shah of Iran, who had fled into exile, first to Egypt and then Morocco.

Now, she was turning for help to the man who ran one of the leading U.S. banks, one which had made a fortune serving as the Shah's banker for a quarter century and handling billions of dollars in Iran's assets. Ashraf's message was straightforward. She wanted Rockefeller to intercede with Jimmy Carter and ask the President to relent on his decision against granting the Shah refuge in the United States.

A distressed Ashraf said her brother had been given a one-week deadline to leave his current place of refuge, Morocco. "My brother has nowhere to go," Ashraf pleaded, "and no one else to turn to." [See David Rockefeller, Memoirs]

    Spurned Appeals

Carter had been resisting appeals to let the Shah enter the United States, fearing that admitting him would endanger the personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Teheran and other U.S. interests. In mid-February 1979, Iranian radicals had overrun the embassy and briefly held the staff hostage before the Iranian government intervened to secure release of the Americans.

Iran lashes out against Albania after Soleimani killing | DW |

Albania has become caught up in the escalating conflict between the US and Iran. Indeed, leaders in the capital, Tirana, welcomed Soleimani's assassination; they immediately expelled two Iranian diplomats, reportedly for engaging in activities deemed unacceptable for diplomats.

The US and Albania reached a humanitarian agreement and in 2013, thousands of MEK members were resettled to the Balkan country. Indeed, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said following Khamenei's threats the resettlement resulted from his country's "unwavering alliance" with the US.

Rama concedes that taking in the MEK members poses a risk for Albania. Yet he said it was a risk that "also honors and keeps alive the Albanian tradition" -- by which he means the country's previous role in protecting Jews from the Nazis during World War II. Albania deported not one single Jew to Nazi Germany.
