Making the UK Great Again

by Frank Schnittger Thu Dec 3rd, 2020 at 03:20:56 PM EST

The United Kingdom is getting a coronavirus vaccine first because it is a "much better country" than France, Belgium and the United States, a British cabinet minister has declared.

Gavin Williamson, the education secretary, praised the work done by the medical regulator to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for use.

Mr Williamson said the United Kingdom's status as the first country to approve a vaccine is due to its superior experts.

"I just reckon we've got the very best people in this country and we've obviously got the best medical regulator, much better than the French have, much better than the Belgians have, much better than the Americans have," he told LBC Radio.

"That doesn't surprise me at because we're a much better country than every single one of them."

So the fact that the vaccine was developed in Germany by scientists of Turkish extraction and will be largely manufactured in Belgium by an American company counts for nothing when compared to the brilliance of UK regulators still operating under EU law? Meanwhile the British led Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine is still undergoing testing and Trump's much heralded "warp speed" initiative has yet to produce a proven vaccine.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock even gave Brexit the credit for the breakthrough even though all the data on which the emergency use authorisation has been issued came from EU sources. But then the UK also had a "world leading" contract tracing system and phone app which didn't work resulting, in part, to one of the worst Covid-19 related death rates in the world despite the fact that only deaths in hospitals within 28 days of a positive test result have been counted.

I suppose these pronouncements build on the meme that the EU is a bureaucracy suffocated artifice unable to compete with the lean private sector led and light touch regulated post Brexit UK. Or maybe it just reflects how much the UK has lost confidence in itself that it has to trumpet every minor issue as some kind of world beating advance. Like Trump, they have learned that creating false narratives is more important than the truth provided you can get it out there in time.

"Warp speed" = "desperately stumbling to the finish line" is for 'losers'. Other countries who have successfully eliminated the virus are in no hurry to mass vaccinate. They're thinking of targeted ring vaccinations first and letting the mediocrities be the guinea pigs.

Fauci: U.K. `really rushed through that approval' of Pfizer vaccine
Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, criticized the British government's decision to greenlight a coronavirus vaccine as overly hasty on Thursday -- contending that the country's approval process relied too heavily on drugmaker data and lacked sufficient scrutiny.

The remarks from Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, came after the United Kingdom on Wednesday approved the vaccine candidate from U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer and and its German partner BioNTech, becoming the first Western nation to authorize a Covid-19 vaccine.

But in an interview on "The Takeout" podcast with CBS News correspondent Major Garrett, Fauci argued that the U.K. "kind of ran around the corner of the marathon and joined it in the last mile." He added: "They really rushed through that approval."

But hey, let's not forget the bragging rights.

A repentant Fauci states the British are good

... just one of those things where I sat down in front of the TV with a British TV station. And the first thing they said was, 'ahh we beat you guys. We beat the Americans to the punch.' And I kind of reacted back at him, when I think I probably should not have done."

"The Brits are good," he added. "They know what they're doing. I mean, they're -- they're really pros. So that was just not really what I meant."

I guess both the Russian and Chinese COVID19 vaccines are just chopped liver (as they very well may be) and that Gavin Williamson is too full of himself to care about anyone else, especially if there aren't sufficiently "British."

Narcissism and self-hatred again show themselves to be the two sides of the same coin. This kind of English bipolar disorder needs to go. Everything is shit and at the same time they're the bestest country in the world. Which way is it? They need to move on. I understand if people think that Britain was stuck and needed a reset via Brexit. Is the mental reset coming though?

Also, there is the obvious parallel to the (no longer) orange guy. Who is more self-involved, yet so self-loathing and self-sabotaging?

Moscow residents to begin receiving Sputnik V vaccines this weekend
Medics and teachers first in line as Russia rolls out Covid-19 vaccine

Some Moscow residents will be able to receive inoculation against coronavirus at 70 vaccination centres around the city from Saturday, with medical workers and teachers being the first in line to receive Russia's Sputnik V vaccine.

The capital's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, announced that online registration for the vaccine would start on Friday, two days after Russian president Vladimir Putin said 2 million doses of Sputnik V would soon be available and "large-scale" vaccination should begin by the end of next week.

The Moscow-based developers of Sputnik V say it is 95 per cent effective, and each of the required two doses of the vaccine will cost less than $10 (€8.22) on the international market, while being offered free in Russia. They have also brushed off concerns raised by some experts about how quickly the vaccine was registered, and about the relatively small sample size in trials and the transparency of trial data.

I think it's really about MEGA - Make England Great again. And since England is all about the City, it's just a quick step to a Mega City, or Brit-Cit as it is canonically called.

Except instead of a police state ruled by genetically enhanced austere judges that are "deeply flawed in the ethics department" it looks more like a police state ruled by the usual inbred aristocracy that are deeply flawed in the ethics department.

Covid: Genes hold clues to why some people get severely ill | BBC News |

'Angry' cells

Scientists looked at the DNA of patients in more than 200 intensive care units in UK hospitals.

They scanned each person's genes, which contain the instructions for every biological process - including how to fight a virus.

Their genomes were then compared with the DNA of healthy people to pinpoint any genetic differences, and a number were found - the first in a gene called TYK2.

"It is part of the system that makes your immune cells more angry, and more inflammatory," explained Prof Baillie.

But if the gene is faulty, this immune response can go into overdrive, putting patients at risk of damaging lung inflammation.
