EU-China Strike Investment Deal

by Oui Thu Dec 31st, 2020 at 07:04:24 AM EST

After long years of Brexit negotiations, four years of American intransigence under Donald Trump, sanctions imposed on NATO allies, ambassadors with a political agenda w/o experience in diplomacy from the School of Pompeo, flaunting International Law, choice for MAGA and ending policy of multilateralism ... even the election of Democrat Joe Biden will be insufficient to believe American ways will change bound by a destructive U.S. Congress.

After the recent trade deal with Japan, the EU again sets a priority in Asia with this EU-China deal. The lame duck president is AWOL spending most of his time on the Mar-a-lago golfcourse. His Twitter feed is filled with election fraud garbage.

The more adamant believers in a supposed Trump victory, including the president himself, have pressured Gov. Brian Kemp to call a special session of the Georgia General Assembly - the state legislature composed of the House and Senate - to effectively re-write the state's election laws so that hand-picked Electoral College voters can be chosen to award the state's votes to Trump.

China scores an EU investment deal before Biden takes office — and it wants to do more CNBC |

BEIJING — China wrapped negotiations with the European Union on an important investment deal and talked up hopes for more, less than a month before U.S. President-elect Joe Biden is set to take office.

China and the European Commission announced Wednesday that the two sides finished talks around a “Comprehensive Agreement on Investment” that gives each region’s businesses more access to the other’s market.

Both sides rushed to get a deal done — Biden is widely expected to marshal the support of traditional American allies to put pressure on China after he takes office, in contrast to the Trump administration. On the European side, there was a desire to finish an agreement before the end of Angela Merkel’s term as German chancellor in 2021, according to a source with the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China.

“It welcomes the news that a political agreement has been reached on the long-discussed Comprehensive Agreement on Investment. The business community looks forward to parsing through the details and what they mean for solidifying the legal position of European companies already in China, as well as for those that may be new entrants to the market as a result of the agreement.

Of course, the agreement will not come into force until final texts are developed and then ratified by both sides, which will likely require overcoming additional hurdles.”

Negotiations had stalled this year, prior to the U.S. presidential election.

One of the articles you cited says
t the beginning of 2017, the U.S. was set to lead an almost identical Asia-Pacific deal that excluded China, called the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP. But Trump scuttled the TPP immediately after his inauguration. It had been negotiated by the Obama Administration.
Is she ignorant of the fact that Hilary Clinton also said that she would withdraw from the agreement? Or is she just assuming that Clinton was lying (which would help explain why she lost)?

Incidentally, one of the reasons for all the opposition to the TPP was those ISDS courts. If TPP was so important to fight the Chinese, the supporters could have got that part removed from the agreement (such clauses seem to be missing in these new Chinese deals). Why the insistence on blaming Trump when the Democrats are just as "guilty"?

What Is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)? | CFR |

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) was the centerpiece of President Barack Obama's strategic pivot to Asia. Before President Donald J. Trump withdrew the United States in 2017, the TPP was set to become the world's largest free trade deal, covering 40 percent of the global economy.

For its supporters, such a deal would have expanded U.S. trade and investment abroad, spurred economic growth, lowered consumer prices, and created new jobs, while also advancing U.S. strategic interests in the Asia-Pacific region. But its detractors, including Trump, saw the deal as likely to accelerate U.S. decline in manufacturing, lower wages, and increase inequality.

With the United States on the sidelines, the remaining TPP countries have forged ahead with a new version of the pact, known as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), keeping most of the original intact. U.S. President-Elect Joe Biden has said he does not support rejoining the TPP as it stands, but that he may try to renegotiate it to include stronger labor and environmental provisions.

"Brexit a product of 'lies and false promises', Macron says in New Year's message"

Mandate from 2013 ... indeed a lot has changed, but Obama and VP Biden were well aware of the initiative ... the US quitting the JCPOA and bullying its way through the WTO - WHO - ME Peace - UNHCR - UN funding and putting sanctions on EU/NATO allies is not a manner of how allies treat one another. The Brexit show of force was not the English by itself, but had US support to undermine the EU. It is a natural proces, continents drifting apart. A very wise push-back by "Old Europe". Let the countries with criticism abide by the rules of the EU and Four Freedoms.

Germany and role as chair of EU

Italy was also unhappy that French President Emmanuel Macron was invited take part in a video conference with Chinese President Xi Jinping alongside Merkel, who represents the EU presidency, while other EU leaders do not.

...
Two diplomats said Macron had benefited certain companies, such as Airbus. Merkel, another official said, reaching an agreement with Macron under which he will finalize the agreement under the German presidency, while ratification and signing of the agreement will be completed under the presidency of the French Council in the first half of 2022.

LMAO

As the Republican members of US Congress are kept busy driving election lawsuits and blocking the votes in the Electoral College next week ... keep up the good work people .. safe our democracy. The rightwing idiots wanted to bust the EU and supported the Tories and UKIP to force Brexit on the British people. Nigel Farage in royal embrace in Trump's Tower in NY to sollicit the job of special envoy in 2016. The UK as Trojan Horse for the US in Brussels. Looking forward to 01-20-2021 12:00 hrs and Trump's Exit ... nice!

Harvard Book Review

Tipped by Larry Summers

Deaths of Despair and the Future of Capitalism paints a troubling portrait of the American dream in decline. For the white working class, today's America has become a land of broken families and few prospects. As the college educated become healthier and wealthier, adults without a degree are literally dying from pain and despair. In this critically important book, Case and Deaton tie the crisis to the weakening position of labor, the growing power of corporations, and, above all, to a rapacious health-care sector that redistributes working-class wages into the pockets of the wealthy. Capitalism, which over two centuries lifted countless people out of poverty, is now destroying the lives of blue-collar America.

This book charts a way forward, providing solutions that can rein in capitalism's excesses and make it work for everyone.

Has China Won?: The Chinese Challenge to American Primacy | Kishore Mahbubani

Book Review: Has China Won?

Mahbubani's latest book, published in April 2020, is a crucial guide to understanding the modern U.S.-China relationship and why this relationship has been marred by such hostility in recent times. This is not a book written by an armchair expert on U.S.-China relations looking to profit from the animosity between two nations. This is also not a book written by a politician to pander to their supporters or voting base. Instead, taking advantage of over three decades of hands-on diplomatic experience, Mahbubani has put forth an unrelentingly realist and highly authoritative book on the twenty-first century's greatest geopolitical contest.

In nine chapters, Mahbubani's diplomatic skill shines as he systematically explores the U.S.-China relationship while carefully balancing both sides of this sensitive story, but also lambasts American exceptionalism in the tradition of Harvard professor Stephen M. Walt, author of The Myth of American Exceptionalism , labeling it as one of the significant ideological barriers preventing the United States from seeing reason.

Trump Takes Credit for Saudi Move Against Qatar, a U.S. Military Partner | NY Times - June 6, 2017 |

The election of the U.S. President Donald Trump played a key role in reigniting the Gulf crisis. The blockading quartet (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt) took advantage of the election of a more sympathetic U.S. president to resume the 2013-2014 diplomatic crisis with Qatar, trying to get Doha to agree to their demands.

As seen from the DC think tanks (AEI in that case):

With China deal, EU leaves the hard part to Washington

In pursuit of profits, Europe is offloading vexing geopolitical issues to Joe Biden's administration.

The investment deal the bloc struck with China late December -- just three weeks before Joe Biden is inaugurated as the new president of the United States -- demonstrates that Europeans are keen to go back to what they do best: pursuing narrow, material self-interest under the U.S. security umbrella -- though not without a heavy dose of moralizing.
