Sanders Heading To SC and Super Tuesday

by Oui Wed Feb 26th, 2020 at 12:51:20 PM EST

Frontrunner bashing in Charleston SC debate. How did the candidates perform on this pivotal night ... Steyer was added to the six candidates, little time to debate the issues, so it became a shouting match. Thank goodness ALL candidates believe they are the voice of Democrats to beat Trump in 2020. Diversity, solidarity and giving the viewer a certain feeling of unity in the Democratic group of candidates was absent. Some commentators compared this night to a cage fight of desperate actors trying to survive the onslaught.

More below the fold ...

Bernie Sanders faces onslaught from rivals in chaotic South Carolina debate | The Guardian |

The Democratic presidential candidates engaged in a series of chaotic and fiery exchanges on Tuesday night, in the final debate before the critical South Carolina presidential primary and Super Tuesday contests that could represent a make-or-break moment.

Senator Bernie Sanders, the frontrunner who cruised to victory in Nevada last week, bore the brunt of criticism from a number of his centrist rivals, including the former vice-president Joe Biden, the ex-New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg, and Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

Buttigieg labelled Sanders a polarizing figure in the primary and warned of a race between the self-declared Democratic socialist and Trump, who has already sought to weaponise the spectre of socialism in the run-up to the November election.

"If you think the last four years has been chaotic, divisive, toxic, exhausting, imagine spending the better part of 2020 with Bernie Sanders v Donald Trump," he said.

The Vermont senator denied his policies were radical, and acknowledged the heat he attracted, stating wryly: "I'm hearing my name mentioned a little bit tonight. I wonder why."

Bloomberg referenced recent reports to suggest that Sanders' campaign was benefiting from Russian interference in the 2020 primary. "Russia is helping you get elected, so you will lose to him [Trump]" Bloomberg told Sanders, in an early attempt to recover from his disastrous first debate performance last week, as members of the audience jeered.

Debate recap: Sanders survives attacks as Republicans revel in the chaos

Who won the Democratic debate? Our panelists' verdict

As for the candidates, for someone who doesn't support the use of filibuster, Elizabeth Warren sure did dominate the microphone on Tuesday night. Pete Buttigieg tried to make everything about him by talking over everyone, Michael Bloomberg was absolutely adorable trying to explain the history of hostilities in the Middle East, and Tom Steyer somehow felt emboldened to talk about economic justice despite building part of his wealth on private prisons and mines. Amy Klobuchar was also there.

The mood was chaotic, the audience paid a lot of money to behave like they were attending a Jerry Springer show, most of the candidates' hair was weirdly terrible, and the only person to hold their ground was Bernie Sanders.

Jessa Crispin is the host of the Public Intellectual podcast. She is a Guardian US columnist.

`The well-heeled audience booed Sanders and Warren and loved Bloomberg'

Bernie Sanders found himself on the receiving end of raucous booing, too, when he challenged Mayor Bloomberg throughout the night, including when he was criticizing Bloomberg's relationship with China.

It didn't take long before rumors about Bloomberg purchasing the audience started spreading around. So much so that one of Bloomberg's top staffers had to inform Josh Lederman of NBC news that the Bloomberg campaign "did not pay people to attend the debate and cheer for Bloomberg".

Perhaps not. Still, a few Google searches later we quickly discovered that the price of tickets to the South Carolina debate ranged between $1,750 and $3,200. And while this does not mean these individuals were paid by Bloomberg to cheer for him, it does mean that the audience members were most likely in a financial position to oppose candidates like Warren and Sanders, who would likely raise their taxes.

How Trump's Swamp Works Now | Rolling Stone - Feb. 2019 |

At 3:45 p.m. on October 6th, 2017, an unassuming man in his early sixties with a low, raspy voice and a thin, wide smile arrived at the White House. He had been here before, in the George W. Bush years, when he was one of the most sought-after fundraisers in the Republican Party. But a scandal had derailed his life, and afterward he had disappeared from politics. In early 2016, the opportunity arose to make his return. The man had helped Donald J. Trump's long-shot campaign raise millions of dollars, and he could rightly say he played a role in the most improbable presidential victory in American history. Now, Elliott Broidy had come to deliver an urgent message. After a brief visit with Jared Kushner, he was summoned to meet the president in the Oval Office.

Broidy told Trump about a recent trip he'd taken to the United Arab Emirates, the small but wealthy Persian Gulf nation, on behalf of a defense-contracting company he owned. Broidy raved about the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and the UAE's de facto leader, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, known as MBZ, whom he had met with while in the Emirates. He said that MBZ and Mohammed bin Salman, the young crown prince of Saudi Arabia, were creating an all-Muslim counterterrorism force made up of 5,000 Arab soldiers to fight against the Taliban and ISIS. With the help of Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the former U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Broidy said, his company would assist the UAE and Saudi Arabia to train and assist those pan-Arab fighters.

Who Will Win The 2020 Democratic Primary? | FiveThirtyEight |

According to the latest corrections, Biden is predicted to rebound in the Southern States and Texas as Sanders increases his lead in the progressive states. In National Polls Sanders solidifies his lead, as Biden picks along his delegates state by state so the result will be a brokered convention.  ☹

As I expected yesterday, latest polls shows Biden expanding his lead over Sanders in SC. It's up to Sanders and his army of volunteers to let the real vote surprise the media and pollsters.

The polling blip towards Sanders has subsided.  It looks like Biden is going to take South Carolina, a sure Trump state in the general.

The neat thing is Biden isn't going to get a bump from the win since everybody expected him to win.

  • SOUTH CAROLINA Winthrop Poll, 9-19 Feb, flagged a trend: tiny Biden lead, 43% undecided. Biden's sketchy 4 pt margin will be beaten like a rented mule into next year

Sanders has no intention of being defensive or apologetic. He's not packaging a message, he is the message. Buttigieg is too slik for his own good and Biden forgot what he believes in, if he ever believed in anything besides getting elected.

The Stocks pundits on Bloomberg and CNBC all agree a Sanders win would shave 20% off the value U.S. stocks. Total value was $33 trillion at the beginning of the week. This amount is 50% of the global stock markets put together. This is the worst week for Wall Street since the financial crisis of 2008/2009. It's also the highest point loss in a week by far and the fastest decline ever! The loss is across ALL indices of a minimum 12% up to 14 - 15%.

We're almost there!! Wall Street is ready for a Bernie Sanders presidency and it's already factored in the value of U.S. stocks ending the month of February.

A Ritual of Joyful, Thankful  Resistance | The Shalom Center |

By now it is a tradition for me to retell the Yarmulke story every Thanksgiving. It carries deeper meaning this year, as we build a new Resistance, than it has for decades.

In 1970, I was asked by the Chicago Eight to testify in their defense. They were leaders of the movement to oppose the Vietnam War, and they had been charged by the Nixon Administration and Attorney-General John Mitchell (who turned out to be a criminal himself - see under "Watergate") with conspiracy to organize riot and destruction during the Chicago Democratic National Convention in 1968.

I had been an alternate delegate from the District of Columbia to the Convention - elected originally as part of an anti-war, anti-racist slate to support Robert Kennedy. After he was murdered, we decided to nominate and support as our "favorite son" the chairperson of our delegation - Rev. Channing Phillips (may the memory of this just and decent leader be a blessing), a Black minister in the Martin Luther King mold.

[...] - back to 1968 -- besides being an elected delegate, I had also spoken the first two nights of the Convention to the anti-war demonstrators at Grant Park, at their invitation, while the crowd was being menaced by Chicago police and the National Guard. This is what the demonstration looked like, clustered nonviolently in the park:

Although the main official investigation of Chicago described it as a "police riot," the Nixon Administration decided to indict the anti-war leaders. So during the Conspiracy Trial in 1970, Tom Hayden, David Dellinger, Abby Hoffman, and the other defendants figured I would be reasonably respectable (as a former delegate) and therefore relatively convincing to the jury and the national public, in testifying that the anti-war folks were not trying to organize violence but instead were the victims of police violence.

As the trial went forward, it became clear that the judge - Julius Hoffman, a Jew - was utterly subservient to the prosecution and wildly hostile to the defense. (Some of us thought he had become possessed by the dybbuk of Torquemada, head of the Inquisition. --- How else could a Jew behave that way? We tried to exorcise his dybbuk. It didn't work.)

Judge Hoffman browbeat witnesses, ultimately literally gagging and binding Bobby Seale, the only Black defendant, for challenging his rulings - etc. Dozens of his rulings against the Eight were later cited by the Court of Appeals as major legal errors, requiring reversal of all the convictions the prosecution had achieved in his court.

Is the 2020 Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee destined to be a repeat of Chicago 1968?

I'm not sure I agree with the above. She had a lot of ad hominem going on - the sexism smear, Bernie takes PAC money and so forth - but her main split came about with M4A where she engineered her plan with a nutty headtax so she could claim that middle class taxes wouldn't go up under her plan. And that was about the point when her polling cratered. What I think is more likely than a conscious strategy is that she hired Clinton staffers who again thought they could run a "girl boss" campaign to the finish line after Harris flamed out.

Having the choice of candidates narrowed, will not increase the chance if a brokered convention, on the contrary. Tuesday wiil tell what the voters think and how the tallies add up. Obama 44.1% in 2012

Pete Buttigieg's decision to drop out of the race two days before Super Tuesday has hurt Sen. Bernie Sanders in our primary forecast. Sanders's chances of winning a majority of pledged delegates fell from 28 percent to 23 percent. And the likelihood that no candidate gets a majority rose slightly from 59 to 64 percent.

The Empire strikes in the primaries campaign ...

All aboard the DNC Biden train | The Spectator USA |

Nobody is banking on Mayor Mike any longer. First Mayor Pete, then Sen. Amy Klobuchar, suspended their campaigns, offering a big boost to Joe Biden as the Democratic establishment seeks to rally behind him and to prevent Bernie Sanders from pulling a Trump.

Buttigieg is havering, at least publicly, about whether he'll endorse Biden. Klobuchar, by contrast, has gone all in. She'll appear at a rally in Dallas, Texas with Biden tonight. It's unlikely that she will be tapped to become Biden's vice-president, but joining him now ensures that Klobuchar would be in line for a plum cabinet post if he's elected president.

Still, it isn't simply self-interest narrowly defined that's prompting these moves. The terminations of the Buttigieg and Klobuchar campaigns offers the most vivid sign of just how deeply worried mainstream Democrats are by the Sanders phenomenon. Sanders cleaned up last month, pulling in over $46 million -- a harbinger of his ability to extract wealth from the general population if he's elected president?

After Super Tuesday, the DNC will set up a crisis management team in a "Hans Brinker" effort to plug a breaking dam. 🤣

The Bottom Line

Income tax burdens vary so much by country because of the rates at which each country funds social insurance programs such as old-age pensions and health care. In some countries, such as the Netherlands, social insurance taxes are significantly higher than basic income taxes.

Each country also provides different levels of benefits to its citizens, and individuals get different returns on the sums they pay into social insurance programs based on personal factors including income, age, and health status.

Different countries also put taxpayers into different brackets based on their income level, marital status, and the number of dependents. So just because a country has an especially high or low overall income tax rate doesn't tell you much about how you would fare in that country with all the circumstances that make up your unique situation.

World Economic Forum in de Global Competitiveness Index

The Dutch ranking is 4th place - full universal health care and high ranking in happiness of life. What you get for free is a low rate of gun violence and no fear for one's security. I personally know an Texan, NRA handgun toting individual, felt terrible coming to the Netherlands with his wife ... sort of vulnerable or even naked. After a few months, his wife spends the evening out by herself, gets home late before midnight by public transportation, a city bus. Gets home quite safe. After six months, her husband had to admit he has never experienced the feeling of real security in his life.

No, the Dutch are NOT communists, never have been. They are following the AngloSaxon (British) model of capitalism, except with many social benefits in place for all. Bernie Sanders would be a centrist leaning to the right in Dutch politics and most likely would be very successful.

Is Joe Biden f*king tone-deaf or just plain ignorant?

Yes
