Healthiest Generation Under Attack

by Oui Sun Mar 29th, 2020 at 09:06:30 AM EST

As the oldest veterans of WWII are dwindling to zero, the baby boomers and half a generation before are part of a healthy group because of food, physical exercise, and economic well being.

Today this group is callously put in harm's way by their own government.

Too many weird and strange policy initiatives have been launched by a handful of countries.

Coronavirus: How to understand the death toll | BBC News |

by Nick Triggle

Each day news of more deaths is a huge source of alarm to people across the country - as well as a tragedy for the families involved.

Projections of how bad it could get have prompted strict measures to be taken, with pubs, clubs, theatres and schools closed and people told to stay at home.
A key piece of modelling which has informed government has been done by Imperial College London.

It suggested 500,000 could die if we do nothing, while the government's previous strategy to slow the spread was likely to lead to 250,000 deaths.

Instead, it is hoped the steps which have been taken, which are essentially about suppressing the virus, will limit deaths to 20,000.

In an appearance before the Health Select Committee in March, Sir Patrick Vallance, the government's chief scientific adviser, said that would be "horrible", but still a "good outcome" given where we are.

Not wearing masks to protect against coronavirus is a 'big mistake,' top Chinese scientist says | Science Mag |

Gao oversees 2000 employees--one-fifth the staff size of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention--and he remains an active researcher himself. In January, he was part of a team that did the first isolation and sequencing of severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. He co-authored two widely read papers published in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) that provided some of the first detailed epidemiology and clinical features of the disease, and has published three more papers on COVID-19 in The Lancet.

His team also provided important data to a joint commission between Chinese researchers and a team of international scientists, organized by the World Health Organization (WHO), that wrote a landmark report after touring the country to understand the response to the epidemic.

His research specializes in viruses that have fragile lipid membranes called envelopes--a group that includes SARS-CoV-2--and how they enter cells and also move between species.

Governors and mayors, not the federal government, have the broadest quarantine and isolation authority, as the constitution leaves that kind of police power in the hands of the states.

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has the authority to detain people suspected of having an infectious disease without getting approval from state and local officials, that authority is rarely used and experts on public health law say that any attempt to leverage that power to create a federally mandated quarantine would likely be challenged in court.

Florida Governor Bans Reporter From Coronavirus Briefings Because She Asked For Social Distancing | Politicua USA |

Reporters do vital work every single day. Without journalists and reporters on the scene, the news could become nothing more than unchallenged propaganda.

Gov. DeSantis is partially responsible for the fact that coronavirus cases have surged to over 4,000 because he refused to cancel spring break and has been slow to put other restrictions in place. The governor is helping Trump to blame the spread of the virus in Florida on New Yorkers.

Republicans are trying to downplay the virus, and the message being sent is that if anyone in the state of Florida asks for basic safety precautions, the governor will retaliate.

5 Ways a Coronavirus Pandemic Could Change the 2020 Election | NY Mag |

And China was already battling slowing growth and mounting debt loads before an epidemic forced it to lockdown entire cities, constraining the consumption of hundreds of millions of people, and pushing countless small businesses to the brink of bankruptcy. Even if the virus had been contained within the country, its resultant disruptions would have been sufficient to dampen the outlook for global growth by a modest but significant degree.

And the virus has not been contained. In fact, coronavirus cases are spiking in Iran, South Korea, and Italy, where it has incapacitated the commercial center of Milan.

COVID-19 isn’t exceptionally lethal, but, for that very reason, it is exceptionally contagious. Ordinary influenza viruses kill about 0.1 percent of those infected. The H5N1 avian flu virus had a fatality rate around 60 percent. COVID-19, by contrast, appears to kill a bit less than 2 percent of those who contract it. This makes a coronavirus diagnosis less harrowing for the individual, but it also makes the bug’s emergence a more profound threat to global public health than many more fatal ailments. The severely ill don’t travel much; the dead shake few hands. But the median victim of coronavirus may not know that they are sick at all for the first few days the virus is incubating inside them. And at least some reports suggest individuals can spread the disease even before they are symptomatic. Regardless, many who do present with symptoms will be unable to distinguish the disease from the common cold. In other words, the virus is nonlethal enough to spread widely, but sufficiently deadly to be experienced as a public health crisis and mass killer of the elderly or already infirm.

China’s heavy-handed quarantine measures appear to have been somewhat effective. New cases in the country are declining. But it’s not clear whether this trend will survive the resumption of business as usual, which the Chinese authorities are understandably anxious to commence. Meanwhile, COVID-19’s arrival in Milan — a financial hub and tourist haven frequented by border-hopping E.U. elites — threatens to hasten the its ascent to the status of an official global pandemic.

Ryan Avent, a columnist for The Economist, outlines the potential economic fallout of this increasingly likely scenario.

It's an assassin ...

13 days, 13 long lonely anxious days and then something finally changed ... I felt a little better, got some appetite again, but then came the next blow, a brother of our dad was admitted ... to the maximum ventilation. .. unfortunately it was too late ... the help was of no avail ... and again I was alone there in the garage ... my mother is almost comforting over the phone and looking for comfort herself. ... to positive things ... don't try to get scared or crazy ...
People don't underestimate ... Corona is an assassin. Corona is not just any flu ... it is dead serious ... makes people weak, sick, deathly ill ... and let people die ... so stay home !!! Stay away from others ... wash your hands, disinfect your house, your toilet ... watch each other ... and call someone else more often ... especially if they are sick ...
Because being sick is not nice, but being sick and only with your fears and thoughts is grueling !!! Unfortunately I speak from experience ... and I'm not there yet ...
And be kind and grateful to our doctors, nursing staff, employees in the shops and all those others who keep working because they have to ...
I will keep fighting and our dad too ... hopefully we can work it out together ...

Folly Beach bars visitors again during coronavirus pandemic hours after reopening island

After beachgoers rushed to the waterline and residents protested the city's decision to reopen to guests after some legal confusion, the council voted unanimously to close the coast to out-of-towners again.

City Council had rolled back its March 20 ban on beach access Friday in response to a nonbinding opinion from Attorney General Alan Wilson saying only the governor can implement a stay-at-home order. Gov. Henry McMaster extended the existing state of emergency Saturday but didn't command South Carolinians to avoid public areas as the state recorded 660 total coronavirus cases and the nation surpassed 120,000.

This past week, a few thousand students and professors returned to Liberty University's main campus in Virginia despite the widening coronavirus pandemic. Even though many of the classes will be held online, students have been invited to come back to their residential halls and the faculty has been told to report to work on campus.

Falwell, who is the president of the conservative Christian school, defended his decision by insisting that "99 percent of [students] are not at the age to be at risk and they don't have conditions that put them at risk."

Similar thing happened in France: an Evangelical church gathering in Mulhouse, the third week of February, gathered about 2000 people in close contact for a whole week. They then came back home propagating the virus all over France, including Corsica and all the way to French Guyana.

To this day the region of Mulhouse and Colmar (south of Strasbourg) is one of the largest number of cases in ICU in the nation (a few dozen patients were transferred to western regions by high-speed train to free up IC beds). This Evangelical gathering also explains other clusters of high number of cases in Corsica and in the middle of the Alpes.

Evangelical gathering in Mulhouse: faithful contaminated everywhere in France and up to Guyana - France 24, 3 March 2020

This week of fasting and prayer, organized by the Christian Open Door, one of the largest Protestant evangelical churches in France, brought together around 2,000 people from all over France, including the overseas departments and neighboring countries, in Mulhouse from 17 to February 24. Thirty have been contaminated, according to a first count.

On Wednesday, the Haut-Rhin prefecture had announced the contamination of 10 people in the department in connection with this event, calling on participants to be vigilant and to contact center 15 in the event of symptoms.

On Thursday, what the prefecture feared became reality, with cases identified among church believers returning to many areas, some of which have been spared the epidemic so far.

Exercise Cygnus uncovered: the pandemic warnings buried by the government

Ministers were informed three years ago that Britain would be quickly overwhelmed by a severe outbreak amid a shortage of critical care beds, morgue capacity and personal protective equipment (PPE), an investigation has discovered.

Codenamed Exercise Cygnus, the three-day dry run for a pandemic carried out in October 2016 tested how NHS hospitals and other services would cope in the event of a major flu outbreak with a similar mortality rate to Covid-19.

The report on Cygnus's findings were deemed too sensitive by Whitehall officials to be made public.

Village of Boekel in Brabant -- Pop. 8855

Highest number of COVID-19 Pandemic deaths :: 500 per 100K ... and it's hurting the community. Living a nightmare where none sees the end.

Boekel in Brabant already lost 9 people to the corona virus: 'Everything is different'

Unrest, fear and uncertainty: the corona virus has a major impact in the Brabant village of Boekel. So far, 9 people have died. We spoke to a surviving relative, the mayor and a pastor.

Gerard's father-in-law Piet Donkers died at the age of 84 from the corona virus. Piet was known in Boekel. He used to be councilor and prince carnival. Gerard: "He has worked for Boekel his whole life, was always positive."

Hold each other by the phone

Pierre Bos was also taken aback by the situation in Boekel. He has been mayor of the village for 11 years. "Boekel feels like a family to me. The virus has a major impact on all of us." The mayor knows all 9 deceased. "It is getting so close." He keeps in touch with the next of kin by telephone and e-mail. "We hold each other over the phone."

Boekel has a strong association life with a lot of contact between people. That may have led to the spread of virus, Bos thinks.

Last week's optimism expressed by Van Dissel of RIVM did not develop in continued rise in deaths and cases this week.

China's Culture of respect for the elderly ...

7 Cultures That Celebrate Aging And Respect Their Elders | Huff Post |

Aging isn't just a biological process -- it's also very much a cultural one.

Different cultures have different attitudes and practices around aging and death, and these cultural perspectives can have a huge effect on our experience of getting older.

While many cultures celebrate the aging process and venerate their elders, in Western cultures -- where youth is fetishized and the elderly are commonly removed from the community and relegated to hospitals and nursing homes -- aging can become a shameful experience. Physical signs of human aging tend to be regarded with distaste, and aging is often depicted in a negative light in popular culture, if it is even depicted at all.

Psychologist Erik Erickson argued that the Western fear of aging keeps us from living full lives. "Lacking a culturally viable ideal of old age, our civilization does not really harbor a concept of the whole of life," he wrote.

Trump also undermined his plea for unity by uttering falsehoods, verbally abusing reporters and making incendiary allegations that implied health care workers were stealing masks, without providing evidence.

Coronavirus News: Video shows NYC emergency room overflowing with patients | ABC News NY |

NEW YORK -- A nurse died from coronavirus after working nonstop for weeks at a hospital where staffers frustrated with dwindling supplies posed in gowns made of trash bags. An emergency room doctor fears he had the virus long before getting too sick to work. Another nurse worries the lone mask she's issued each day won't be enough to protect her from an unending tide of hacking, feverish patients.

At New York City-area hospitals on the front lines of the biggest coronavirus outbreak in the nation, workers are increasingly concerned about the ravages of the illness in their own ranks, and that the lack of testing and protective gear is making it not a matter of if they get it, but when.

"Our emergency room was like a petri dish," said Benny Mathew, a nurse at Montefiore Medical Center who got word Thursday that he had COVID-19 and is now worried he may infect his wife and two daughters.

"I'm angry. We could have secured enough personal protective equipment months ago. It was happening in China since December," he said. "But we thought it was never going to happen here."
