AUKUS: Choice for a Chaotic Boris Is Striking

$66 Billion Reasons: did Scott Morrison get the French submarines right?

A must read, informative and quite enjoyable ...

Forward to the past

It is poetic too, that at this very time we are striking even stronger and even more unnecessary ties with Westminster and Washington. Boris Johnson's government is beset by the chaos which is Brexit, such chaos now that it has spawned a global energy emergency. While the EU has the wobbles on its trade deal with Australia, Boris is in the market for a friend.

Moreover, the retro economic policies of our "Superior Economic Managers" of the Coalition are redolent of Old England, very Old England of the 12th and 13th centuries, Edward II Old England where they depleted the forests to pursue their extractive industries of mining and agriculture, where incompetence culminated in humiliation on the battlefield, the Great Famine, the Black Plague and finally the Peasants Revolt of 1381.

In parallel, the Coalition has suffered defeat and retreat in Afghanistan, the Drought and the Pandemic, and all they need now is a peasants revolt. That ought to come sooner rather than later. The settings are in place. Poor government, spiralling inequality, abuse of wealth and power.

The Government's neo-liberal "trickle down" policies have failed miserably. Even before the Pandemic, the economy had been contracting. Just like the feudal model of the Middle Ages, where the rich got richer as asset prices rose, and the poor were exploited as wages stagnated and treasury was depleted in useless wars against France and Scotland, Australia's working classes are increasingly vassaled to their superiors, disenchanted.

Biden You Should be Aware Your Submarine Deal Has Costs | NY Times Op-Ed |

The landmark defense pact with Australia and Britain, AUKUS, that Mr. Biden announced this month is a major step to making that pivot to Asia a reality. Under the agreement, Australia will explore hosting U.S. bombers on its territory, gain access to advanced missiles and receive nuclear propulsion technology to power a new fleet of submarines.

French ex-PM Balladur on trial over 'Karachi affair' kickbacks | France24 - Jan. 18, 2021 |

Pak Army's role in deadly 2002 Karachi terrorist attack continues to haunt France

Pakistan's image as a terror sponsor came into sharp focus when France recalled the killing of 11 French nationals in Karachi on May 8, 2002, with anger and sadness. The French citizens were working on a French-Pak submarine project in Karachi when they were targeted by terrorists sponsored by a cabal of middle-men, Generals and politicians in Pakistan who were angry at not receiving the bribe they were promised.

Although Pakistan was quick to label the suicide bombing as an al Qaeda attack, the French investigators subsequently were able to discover clear evidence of the ISI's direct involvement in the bombing.
...
In 1994, France sold three Agosta 90B class military submarines to Pakistan for about one billion euros. Fifty million of these euros were set aside as commissions to be shared by some of Pakistan's politically powerful figures of the time as well as military officers who had 'managed` the deal. The group included the then Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's husband, Asif Ali Zardari, the then Naval chief, Admiral Mansurul Haq, his predecessor Admiral Saeed Khan, a former naval intelligence director besides some defence agents in Pakistan and other countries. The most notorious of them was Amir Lodhi, brother of a former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, and a close associate of Zardari.

Damn ... inflation has really hit the price of a submarine 😉

Johnson's claim Dutch PM offered to mediate in Brexit row not true, say sources | The Guardian - Sept. 20, 2021 |

Boris Johnson has walked into a diplomatic row with one of the UK's closest allies after claiming the prime minister of the Netherlands had been seeking to "mediate" between Brussels and London over the post-Brexit arrangements for Northern Ireland.

Speaking to reporters on a plane to New York for a meeting of the UN general assembly, the prime minister suggested the Dutch government was looking to act as a mediator between the European Commission and London on the differences that have arisen in recent months.

"I talked to Mark Rutte [the Dutch PM] the other night, who wanted to come and see if he could mediate on the issue and I said, you know, we really want to make progress," Johnson had said. "We seek a solution, but it has to be one that allows the free movement of goods between all parts of our country."

Dutch diplomatic sources expressed surprise at the prime minister's comments, insisting that Rutte had instead specifically urged Johnson to be pragmatic in his dealings with the European Commission.

The NI Protocol is working just fine for NI, but the Tories can't afford to have the rest of the UK see up close and personal what continuing, direct access to the EU looks like.

The strike at Logistics Nivelles has consequences for Carrefour stores

The reason for this shortage is the strike by Carrefour's logistics provider, Logistics. The trucks have been stuck for several days. Result: sparse fresh shelves, even empty in some places. "In my opinion, now we are 60% empty. We have 40% of effective stock left", specifies Vincent Heuse, manager-employee of the Carrefour Market in Embourg.

Belgium is looking for 5,000 lorry drivers to prevent empty shelves

Australia rejects visa-free immigration deal with UK | Jan. 6, 2020 |

International trade secretary Liz Truss, on a visit to Australia, announced that a plan to allow British citizens to live and work in the country visa-free could be just months away. She said: "We've been clear on the fact we want to adopt the Australian-based points system in terms of our new immigration system as we leave the European Union ... our two countries have a special link and a historic relationship, and it's certainly something that we will be looking at as part of our free-trade negotiations."

Liz bowed out to the brain-drain deal with Australia, but fortunately the Green deal clauses were scrapped. Australia is coal mining country of course!

Taiwan says dozens of Chinese planes entered defence zone | BBC News |

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) planes flew near the Pratas Islands atoll, the ministry said.

An air defence identification zone is an area outside of a country's territory and national airspace - but where foreign aircraft are still identified, monitored, and controlled in the interest of national security.

It is self-declared and technically remains international airspace.

Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone covers more continental China than Taiwan. So they can make alerting noises basically whenever they want.

Lunar New Year Cross-strait Charter

Reaction in Taiwan and in Mainland China

The Pan-Blue coalition, which led the talks from Taiwan, supported the charter flights. The majority Pan-Green coalition, however, saw it as "step towards reunification " which Taiwanese people do not prefer and criticized the Pan-Blue coalition for holding talks with the PRC without government permissions. The Taiwanese public at large, and especially the merchants who benefited the most, supported the charter flights, and the Pan-Blue coalition benefited from the positive response.
