So NATO and the US suffered a setback by full withdrawal from Afghanistan and left Central Asia to regional powers Turkey, Russia and China. How to get the attention of media and the world.

Kremlin is also closing the alliance's liaison mission in Moscow | DW News |

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told DW that Russia's decision to shutter its NATO mission make relations with Moscow more difficult. "We must acknowledge more and more that Russia no longer seems to be [willing to cooperate]," said Maas, who called the decision "more than just regrettable ... It will seriously damage the relationship."

In assessing the situation, former senior NATO official Jamie Shea told DW: "Of course, it's easier if there are people in Brussels that they [NATO] could talk to. But given the poor state of the relationship, this does not make a major difference.

Shea, who served as deputy assistant secretary general for emerging security challenges at NATO until retiring in 2018, added: "These are two sides that haven't really been talking to each other very much -- certainly not at the working level. And of course, as Russia shows no sign of withdrawing from Crimea anytime soon -- which was NATO's condition to return to normal relations -- this situation is likely to continue for a long time to come."

Waiting for Russia to withdraw from Crimea? A long wait, this will never happen, see ye in the 22nd century Shea.

FBI raids Washington mansion linked to Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska | The Guardian |

The treasury department imposed sanctions in response to Russia's sweeping campaign in 2016 to meddle in the US election, and to various cyber-attacks. It said Deripaska had acted "on behalf of ... a senior Russian government official" - code for Putin - and had claimed to represent the Kremlin in other countries.

The treasury said then: "Deripaska has been investigated for money laundering, and has been accused of threatening the lives of business rivals, illegally wiretapping a government official, and taking part in extortion and racketeering."

Reform movement legal arm calls to classify extreme-right Lehava as terror group

The legal advocacy arm of the Reform Movement called upon Israeli officials to designate the Lehava Jewish extremist group as a terrorist organization.

The letter, sent to Defense Minister Benny Gantz, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit and the chief of the Shin Bet security service Nadav Argaman, detailed the actions of Lehava and its director, Bentzi Gopstein, since the organization was founded, the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) said in a statement.

Gopstein's Lehava group opposes intermarriage and assimilation of Jews, as well as LGBT rights, and tries to stifle any public activity by non-Jews in Israel, including coexistence events. Lawmakers across the political spectrum have also attempted to designate it as a terrorist group.

New York Times Journalist Ben Hubbard Hacked with Pegasus after Reporting on Previous Hacking Attempts | Citizens Lab |

KEY FINDINGS

The New York Times journalist Ben Hubbard was repeatedly targeted with NSO Group's Pegasus spyware over a three-year period from June 2018 to June 2021. The targeting took place while he was reporting on Saudi Arabia, and writing a book about Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The targeting resulted in Pegasus infections in July 2020 and June 2021. Notably, these infections occurred after Hubbard complained to NSO Group that he was targeted by the Saudi-linked KINGDOM Pegasus operator in June 2018.

Today we declare Apache attack helicopter a defensive weapon for border control ...

The Biden administration's new $500m military contract with Saudi Arabia contradicts the spirit of the White House's public policy to bar all "offensive" weapons sales to the kingdom for use against the Houthis in Yemen, critics of the deal have alleged.

The administration's decision to end so-called "offensive" weapons to Saudi Arabia was one of Joe Biden's first foreign policy objectives, and reflected what the US president called his commitment to "ending all support" for a war that had created "a humanitarian and strategic catastrophe".

Saudi Arabia was given permission by the state department to enter a contract to support the Royal Saudi Land Forces Aviation Command's fleet of Apache helicopters, Blackhawks, and a future fleet of Chinook helicopters. It includes training and the service of 350 US contractors for the next two years, as well as two US government staff.

The deal was first announced in September.

"To my mind, this is a direct contradiction to the administration's policy. This equipment can absolutely be used in offensive operations, so I find this particularly troubling," said Seth Binder, director of advocacy at the Project on Middle East Democracy.

The decision to approve the military maintenance contract comes as the Biden administration appears to be softening its approach to the kingdom, with several high-level meetings between senior administration officials and their Saudi counterparts.

Lebanon's Kordahi on calls for his resignation: We cannot remain subject to blackmail | Al Arabya |

Lebanon's Information Minister George Kordahi said on Wednesday his country "cannot remain subject to blackmail" in response to calls for his resignation after his statements about Saudi Arabia and the UAE's involvement in the Yemen war.

...
"They are trying to dictate who must stay in the government and who must go. Are we not a sovereign country? Why does this happen only in Lebanon?"

Kordahi had said that Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis were defending themselves and described the war in Yemen as "futile."

His comments angered Gulf countries, and led to Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait to summon their Lebanese envoys in protest over Kordahi's statements.

Kordahi stressed that his comments, which were made during an August 5 interview on an online show affiliated with Qatar's Al Jazeera network, were his "personal opinions" and did not oblige the government because he wasn't a cabinet member at the time.

"Whoever wants to characterized my stance as one against Saudi Arabia, that accusation is rejected. I have never attacked or insulted Saudi Arabia," he said, adding: "As for the UAE, I consider it my second home."

Sudan coup 2021: What's at stake for neighbouring powers

The threat of democracy

Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are all deeply invested in Sudan, and have backed the military during the post-2019 transition, hoping to bring Sudan into their sphere of influence.

Burhan himself studied in a Cairo military college, and the Sudanese armed forces regularly conduct military exercises with their Egyptian counterparts (the most recent began last Tuesday.)

Burhan has also made numerous visits, which reportedly sent weapons in April 2019 to Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group linked to the genocide in Darfur.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have paid Sudanese troops and paramilitary soldiers handsomely for fighting for them against the Houthis in Yemen.

Israel's 'shadow war' and plans to scupper Iran's nuclear deal | Al Jazeera - May 5, 2021 |

As efforts continue in Vienna to bring the United States back into the nuclear deal with Iran, Israel sent a high-level delegation of intelligence and defence officials to Washington last week to try to dissuade the US from returning to the accord, while at the same time, it prepares for after it does.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu briefed the delegation before it left for Washington, instructing it to "to express opposition to the agreement with Iran and not to discuss it, because it constitutes a return to the previous deal, which was dangerous to Israel and the region", according to a news briefing by Netanyahu's office, quoted in the daily Haaretz. "If serious talks are held in the future on an improved agreement, Israel will express its opinion."

Netanyahu has repeatedly said, since the deal was signed in 2015, that Israel was not bound by it. But the fact that he sent a high-level security delegation to Washington indicates that there are still issues to be discussed.

Iranian officials informed the EU after the inauguration that they intend to return to talks in Vienna in September, and Raisi said during his Aug. 5 inaugural address that he would pursue "smart engagement" to achieve a lifting of U.S. and international sanctions on Iran. But his administration appears dissatisfied with the progress made during the first six rounds of negotiations and may attempt to renegotiate certain issues.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Saeed Khatibzadeh, said on Aug. 9 that the Biden administration needs to return to talks in Vienna with a new "realistic approach" so that a conclusion is reached in the "shortest time."

This was after an Iranian committee set up to review progress made during the negotiations for the incoming Raisi administration determined that the Vienna talks failed to produce an agreement on several key areas because of "bullying" by U.S. and European parties, Kayvan Khosravi, spokesperson for Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said in July.

US and EU agree to 'pause' trade war over aluminum, steel, focus on Chinese overcapacity

The fight over steel and aluminum has been a major source of contention between the EU and the U.S. since Trump imposed punitive tariffs in 2018.

Europeans and other allies were outraged by Trump's use of Article 232 to justify the tariffs, leading many to impose counter-tariffs on U.S.-made motorcycles, bourbon, peanut butter and jeans, among other items.

National security adviser Jake Sullivan, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo announced the agreement Saturday.

It eliminates a source of friction between the allies and lets them focus on negotiating a new global trade agreement to address worldwide excess steel and aluminium capacity, mainly centred in China, and reduce carbon emissions from the industries.

US steel production, which relies heavily on electric-arc furnaces, is regarded as having far lower carbon emissions than the coal-fueled blastfurnaces prevalent in China.

The deal will eliminate Europe's retaliatory tariffs against US products including bourbon whiskey, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and motor boats that were set to double on 1 December, US officials said.

Raimondo said the deal will reduce costs for steel-consuming US manufacturers. Steel prices have more than tripled in the past year to records topping $1,900 a ton as the industry has struggled to keep up with a demand surge after Covid-19 pandemic-related shutdowns, contributing to inflation.
