American B-1B bomber flies over Mideast amid Iran tensions | AP News - Oct. 31, 2021 |

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- The U.S. Air Force said Sunday it flew a B-1B strategic bomber over key maritime chokepoints in the Mideast with allies including Israel amid ongoing tensions with Iran as its nuclear deal with world powers remains in tatters.

The B-1B Lancer bomber flew over the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of all oil traded passes. It also flew over the Red Sea, its narrow Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Egypt's Suez Canal.

The Strait of Hormuz has been the scene of attacks on shipping blamed on Iran in recent years, while the Red Sea has seen similar assaults amid an ongoing shadow war between Tehran and Israel. The Islamic Republic has denied being involved in the attacks, though it has promised to take revenge on Israel for a series of attacks targeting its nuclear program.

The B-1B Lancer, which can be adapted to deliver the "bunker buster" bombs necessary to strike Iranian nuclear facilities, was escorted by Israeli F-15s at the end of military exercises in which the British RAF and other NATO allies also took part.

Last month, two B-52 bombers flew over the Israeli airspace as part of an American display of force against Iran, for the third time in a month and a half.

Tension has risen between the US and Iran following the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh in Tehran in November. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has accused Israel of killing the scientist and vowed "strong retaliation."

Exclusive: IAEA chief says Israel should join NPT like others

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says the UN nuclear watchdog believes everyone should sign the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and that the Israeli regime is no exception.

In an exclusive interview with Press TV on Tuesday, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi was asked about the Agency's stance on Israel, which has long been in possession of undeclared nuclear arms, refusing to join the NPT, and attempts to pile pressure on NPT signatory Iran. Grossi replied,

"What I can say is that we believe that every country should subscribe to the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty. This is something which is very important. The General Conference of the IAEA has approved several resolutions insisting that every state in the world adheres to this treaty, which we believe is very important."

He said the IAEA General Conference had "repeatedly approved resolutions exhorting" Israel, among others, to be part of the NPT.

'Very constructive talks in Tehran'

Elsewhere, Grossi said he has held "very constructive" talks with Iranian officials as part of "a long day of discussions, talks, and negotiations" during a visit to the Islamic Republic.

High-level Meetings in Iran 'Inconclusive,' IAEA Director General tells Board

The IAEA has been verifying and monitoring the implementation by Iran of its nuclear related commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), sometimes referred to as the Iran nuclear deal. However, since February 2021, verification and monitoring activities have been affected as a result of Iran's decision to stop the implementation of its nuclear-related commitments under the JCPOA.

A temporary agreement between Iran and the IAEA in February facilitated the maintenance of continuity of knowledge, Mr Grossi said. "However, the repeated prolongation of the agreement, which has now been in place for around nine months, is becoming a significant challenge to the Agency's ability to restore this continuity of knowledge," he stated.

Lack of access to the Karaj workshop to IAEA inspectors is "seriously affecting the Agency's ability to restore continuity of knowledge at the workshop, which has been widely recognized as essential in relation to a return to the JCPOA," Mr Grossi added.

[The TESA Karaj workshop was targeted by joint, Israel and U.S., or sole Israeli sabotage attempt in June.]

Iran's top negotiator announced on Thursday that the country had provided the five parties to the JCPOA with draft documents detailing its proposals and positions on the removal of sanctions imposed by the United States after leaving the agreement and the nuclear steps Tehran has taken in response.

In a phone call with European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Friday, Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian described the process of negotiations in Vienna "good but slow," asserting that the West needs to focus on removing the United States' sanctions against Iran.

I would focus on Antony Blinken as he is more hawkish towards Iran. Israel has performed very poorly in the relations during the Obama/Biden period. I'm sure Bennett would be on the same page as Netanyahu, even less concerned about comments from the White House as a bi-partisan US Congress is fully committed in support of Israel. Settlement building and Palestinian evictions from East Jerusalem has barely received any criticism. Israel shut down of the six Human Rights NGOs as other nations have done before: Egypt and Russia. Israel is ambivalent about Russia and Ukraine and one won't find any harsh criticism about Putin. The Biden administration has fully support the Trump/Kushner/Pompeo deal with Arab States called the Abraham Accords. Gross violations of human rights by most all signatories does not headlines make: UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.

On Recent Hebrew and Israeli Sources for the Palestinian Exodus, 1947-49

Israeli disinformation campaign quite successful until the archives were opened ...

Plan Dalet: Blueprint for Ethnic Cleansing | IMEU - 2013 |

The Haganah (soon to be Israeli army) launched military operations under Plan Dalet at the beginning of April 1948. Although attacks by Zionist forces against Palestinian population centers actually began a few days after the UN Partition Plan was passed on November 29, 1947, with the adoption of Plan Dalet expulsions accelerated and became systematic, marking a new phase in the conflict in which Zionist and then Israeli forces went on "the offensive," in the words of Israeli historian Benny Morris.

Following Israel's establishment on May 14, 1948, the new Israeli government set up an unofficial body, the "Transfer Committee," to oversee the destruction of Palestinian towns and villages or their repopulation with Jews, and to prevent displaced Palestinians from returning to their homes. In a report presented to Ben-Gurion in June 1948, the three-man committee, which included the JNF's Weitz, called for the "destruction of villages as much as possible during military operations."

Erasing history of the Nakba ...

In July 2009, Israel's education ministry announced that the term nakba, introduced two years previously into Palestinian-Israeli textbooks, was to be removed on the grounds that its use was tantamount to spreading propaganda against Israel. In May last year, a law was passed - widely termed the "Nakba Law" - that withdraws government funding from any group judged to be "acting against the principles of the country", which includes the commemoration of the nakba. The law effectively criminalises the right of the Palestinian people to remember.

Palestine: the prize, the novel and The Promise | March 12, 2011 |

The questions of Palestine, the Nakba and the Wall were also central to the major four-part drama, The Promise, which screened on Channel 4 last month.

....
In his Jerusalem Prize acceptance speech, Ian McEwan spoke of his recent discovery of a novel by S Yizhar - Khirbet Khizeh, published in 1949:

the luminous account of the clearing of an Arab village during the '48 war, and of a protest that never quite leaves the throat of its narrator as the houses are demolished and the villagers driven from their land. It is a tribute to an open society that this novella was for many years required reading for Israeli schoolchildren.

Well, I had not heard of that novel, but was intrigued to know more.  Now, in today's Guardian Review, I learn that the book is published in English this month by Granta.

Bennett and Biden: the Honeymoon is Over
In Tense Call, Blinken Demands Israel Cease Sabotage Attacks on Iran

Just before the nuclear talks resumed earlier this week, Secretary of State Blinken held a contentious phone consultation with Bennett in which he excoriated the Israeli leader after his government renewed a plan for 2,000 units of new settlement housing, which it had tabled only days before.

Even more irksome was Blinken's demand that Israel cease any sabotage operations targeting Iran's nuclear program during the JCPOA talks. This is an unprecedented public exposure of a rift between the US, which is focused on a diplomatic solution and Israel, which never met a problem that couldn't be fixed by firing bullets at it. Yediot Achronot, which first reported this exchange, did not say how Bennett responded.

More BS from Jerusalem ...

Biden-Bennett dispute on Palestinians, settlements is really all about Iran - JPost opinion

IN MY VIEW, the explanation for the Biden administration's escalation of tensions with Israel lies in a completely different realm. It is a function of the impending (and ruinous) Biden nuclear deal with Iran.

Biden is signaling to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett: Shut-up about the nuclear deal and don't you dare try to scuttle it or else the US will make your life miserable on the Palestinian front.

In other words, Biden is braying about Jerusalem, Palestinians and settlements mainly to force Bennett into submission regarding Iran.

Make no mistake about it. Despite Iranian rhetoric about never again signing any deal with the "Great Satan" and Iranian attacks on US and other targets in the Gulf, the Biden administration is closer than ever to a new/old agreement with Iran.

Obama Visit: Friction behind the smiles | Ynet News- March 21, 2013 |

Washington wants Israel to be a quiet partner in this axis so that the Jewish state will be able to cooperate with its neighbors over the table, and mainly under it. This could be beneficial in the event that the US or Israel - or both countries - attack Iran. For the sake of this cooperation Obama will likely ask Netanyahu to show restraint and calm in the Palestinian arena and ask Abbas to refrain from attempting any empty diplomatic provocations that will anger Israel and foment unrest in the territories.

The US also wants Israel to initiate goodwill gestures to the Arabs and the Palestinian Authority to make it easier for the PA to join the pro-Western Muslim axis. One such gesture would be declaring that Israel accepts the Arab peace initiative. For this same reason Obama will also ask Israel's leaders to swallow their pride and end the conflict with Turkey. This strategic American maneuver is already showing results on the ground. There is increased cooperation between the US and regional players to prevent the leakage of Syrian chemical weapons to hostile elements. Israel and the US are also in agreement regarding the need to prevent al-Qaeda from take control over Syria.

This is the essence of Obama's "great strategy," which he will try to promote during his visit. The practical aspect of the visit will focus on three main issues: The Iranian nuclear program, resuming the efforts to reach an Israeli-Palestinian agreement and dealing with the threats from the north (Syria and Lebanon).

Nothing of the Obama Grand Strategy worked out well ... it was under Trump/Kushner/Pompeo the Abraham Economics Accords was signed.

unprecedented? Has the author never heard of Eisenhower?
DURING THE LAST several days I have received disturbing reports from the Middle East. These included information that Israel was making a heavy mobilization of its armed forces. These reports became so well authenticated that yesterday morning, after a meeting with the Secretary of State, I sent a personal message to the Prime Minister of Israel expressing my grave concern and. renewing a previous recommendation that no forcible initiative be taken which would endanger the peace.

I have just received additional reports which indicate that the Israeli mobilization has continued and has become almost complete with consequent stoppage of many civil activities. The gravity of the situation is such that I am dispatching a further urgent message to Prime Minister Ben-Gurion.

I have given instructions that these developments be discussed with the United Kingdom and France which joined with the United States in the Tripartite Declaration of May 25, 1950 with respect to the maintenance of peace in the Middle East.

While we have not heard of such large-scale mobilization in countries neighboring Israel which would warrant such Israeli mobilization, I have also directed that my concern over the present situation be communicated to other Middle East states urgently requesting that they refrain from any action which could lead to hostilities.

How about 1954?

The Suez Crisis: A Brief Comint History

... erupted only days before the Soviet invasion of Hungary on 4 November 1956.

The Suez crisis created a painful predicament for U.S. policymakers. Without American support or knowledge, two staunch U.S. allies, in collusion with Israel, plotted to go to war for a cause the Eisenhower administration believed was rash, unjustified, and potentially very dangerous. Ultimately, France, Britain, and Israel would become the overt aggressors against Egypt. As a result, the United States was in the awkward position of siding with Nasser against its allies. The Soviet factor further complicated the situation, especially for the United States. The U.S. allies implicitly relied upon America to counter any belligerency by the Russian "Bear."

The U.S. administration was never sure how far the Soviets would go to assist Nasser or resist Western aggression in the region. Eisenhower described the Soviets as both "furious and scared" by the concurrent crises in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. This, he averred, made for "the most dangerous possible state of mind." For this reason, Soviet movements and actions were of primary interest to the U.S. intelligence community.

A New Strategic Architecture Is Emerging in the Gulf | Arab Center - Sept. 24, 2021 |

The changing conditions of intra-Gulf relations are a direct result of important and most likely irreversible transformations in the near and distant regional environments of the GCC. Qatar is reclaiming its place in the GCC and playing a busy role as both an interlocutor between the United States and Iran and as a facilitator of American relations with Afghanistan's Taliban. Saudi Arabia is using the opportunity of an opening in Iraq to engage the Islamic Republic of Iran in dialogue about important mutual concerns.

The UAE is betting on two simultaneous strategic moves to increase its reach and influence in the wider region: de-escalating with neighbors and normalizing relations with Israel.

Iran is experiencing a consolidation of hard-liners' control over its executive and legislative branches of government as its friendly militias continue to play pivotal roles around the region. Indeed, the Gulf region appears to be moving in the direction of a restructured strategic architecture that depends on the ability of regional actors to successfully recast their capabilities and interests without an active and direct role by the United States.

Defense Min. Benny Gantz presents Iran attack timeline to US officials | JPost |

Jerusalem consulted with Washington on two previous strikes on Iran: one in June against a facility producing centrifuges in Karaj, and another on a missile production site outside Tehran, The New York Times reported.

US President Joe Biden asked his National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan two months ago to review plans to attack Iran if diplomatic efforts fail, as well as the possibilities for increasing sanctions, according to the Times.

That leak comes as the US and Israel are increasingly at odds in their evaluation of the Iranian threat. Israeli officials continue to be deeply concerned that in the recently resumed negotiations in Vienna, Washington will seek an interim deal lifting sanctions on Tehran while insufficiently restricting its nuclear program.

The Looming Threat of a Nuclear Crisis with Iran| The New Yorker |

Malley has long experience with the Middle East. His father was a French journalist known for his support of anti-colonialist movements. Working on the National Security Council during the Clinton Administration, Malley participated in the Camp David peace talks. After they collapsed, in 2000, he broke with the conventional analysis that the summit had failed because of Yasir Arafat's intransigence. Malley published detailed insider accounts about how the Israelis shared the blame, for making proposals difficult for Arafat to accept. Critics declared Malley rabidly anti-Israel. Former colleagues publicly called the attacks on Malley "unfair, inappropriate, and wrong." After Clinton left office, Malley worked on Iran at the International Crisis Group, which tracks global conflicts. As part of his job, he met with Iranian officials and travelled to Tehran.

The agreement survived for only two years. Influenced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and by Republican hawks, President Donald Trump abandoned the deal in 2018. He also imposed more than a thousand sanctions on Iran. They targeted the Supreme Leader, the Foreign Minister, judges, generals, scientists, banks, oil facilities, a shipping line, an airline, charities, and allies, such as the President of Venezuela, for doing business with Tehran. Trump also designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the country's most powerful military branch, as a terrorist group--an action that the U.S. had never taken against another nation's military, even the Nazi Wehrmacht.
