Reading the Tea Leaves In The White House

by Oui Fri Feb 12th, 2021 at 11:26:07 AM EST

Joe Biden was a fervent backer of the Russian reset button - Cold War 2.0 - leading foreign policy during the Obama administration. With many advisors in key position, Putin and Lavrov will raise the castle bridge to weather the coming assault.

Russia ready to cut ties if EU ups sanctions, diplomat says | ABC News |

Russia's Medvedev joined the US proposition on Libya in the UN Security Council on R2P policy and got burned for it. From regime change in Libya, the weapons and jihadist terrorists were transported through Benghazi and Turkey into Northern Syria. By means of Russian intervention in September 2015, it prevented a Sunni terror run regime with slaughter of Christian and Shia minorities. New alliances were forged.

The JCPOA agreement on a nuclear deal with Iran was a policy win for the Obama administration.

In 2016 a new alliance of the Arab Sunni monarchies with Israel developed to counter the JCPOA and focused on the world's "worst" state of terror: the Islamic Republic of Iran. This alliance combined with extreme rightwing Republicans an effort to keep Democrats out of the White House in November 2016. The alliance didn't choose the Republican candidate, it became Trump by default. The Democrats made sure Donald Trump would have a long shot for the presidency by crowning Hillary Clinton as their candidate. As if written in the stars, the surprise winner by a landslide was Donald J. Trump.

Four years on, with a more partisan U.S. Congress than ever seen in a hundred years and a nation heavily armed as ready to start a Civil War any day, Joe Biden sets out on a Herculean task to battle a surging pandemic, gross inequality and loss of jobs across the country and a gigantic divide between population of Red States and Blue States.

Unfortunately, foreign policy of the global military and economic leader of the world is not on the radar of Americans who voted in the presidential election. Somehow the representatives in Congress seem to relish bi-partisanship by agreeing on the enemy of the decade. What's new? The enemy is not the Sunni States where the attack on America in 2001 originated, but Socialism and Communism. Europe is Socialist except for the United Kingdom post-Brexit. The enemies of the American people are Venezuela, Russia, North Korea and the New Colossus China.

The painful loss of Persia and the Shah is forever on the minds of the US State Department, including the Israel Lebanon War of 1980s where Reagan attempted a military intervention that backfired with loss of lives and the suffering of cruel kidnapping. Hezbollah was founded as an alternative to Yasser Arafat's PLO. It became a mighty force of it's own with initial backing of Assad's Syria and after US interventions in Iraq by Iran's Shia leadership.

The Trump years weren't hindered by influence of International Law and treaties. In the end, a new business accord was agreed between Israel and their new Arab partners in the Abraham Accords. The fate of Palestinians was sealed.

If President Biden and his administration were to be seen as liberal or progressive on ME and foreign policy, forget it. The White House is bound by a united bi-partisan majority in Congress ... a harsh reality. Netanyahu won't get any presents from Joe Biden as the former had used the Republican Party to his personal advantage to stay in power.

So in fact, a Democratic White House follows the path of Neocon rightwing policy in the Middle-East. NATO has become a tool of American Expansionism. The 90s offered a chance to make a more peaceful world as military spending tumbled. Bush and the shock of 9/11 caused the War on Terror and bombardment and invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq. NATO under article 5 gained a new mandate to fight a global war. The terror attack by Al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden offered Israel's leaders the opportunity to equate the Palestinian movement for Independence as a terror organization.  By militarizing media and propaganda, a wave of populist themes spilled over the Western World from Islamophobia to Xenophobia. In the media of today, anti-Israel themes are equated as anti-semitism by new IHRA definition.

Thus I see no new tendency under US leadership for a more peaceful world. Europe needs to make their own choices in a harsh economic environment. The EU-27 is more divided than ever due to expansion into Russian sphere of influence. As Rumsfeld so fittingly observed, there is an Old Europe and a New Europe. By considering the Russian Federation as a pariah or enemy state, Europe will be on a path of confrontation, violence and cyberwarfare in the least worse concept of a future.

It's imperative to work out common goals and stop sowing division. The future of Our Planet is at stake and not renew a conflict of ages or centuries ago. We live in the 21th Century and the Youth and a new generation deserve better. The scarred elder politicians are blocking new perspectives on a better world. Even with all modern tools and knowledge of Healthcare, a global pandemic caused more damage than a major conflict by military arms. Such a shame and regret.

The generation of narcists and "MeFirst!" never take responsibility, always pointing fingers elsewhere. Hoarding vaccines by leading nations is so exemplary: United States, United Kingdom and Israel. The true heroes are the low-income frontline workers of hospitals, ambulance, GPs and care homes. The top 0.1% are reaping the monetary rewards of the pandemic. A disaster still waiting to happen.

B-1Bs to Deploy to Norway | Air Force Magazine |

U.S. B-1B bombers will deploy to Norway for the first time, in both a message to Russia and a sign of the growing importance of the Arctic.

B-1Bs from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, will fly out of Orland Air Base on the coast of the Norwegian Sea. While bombers have repeatedly flown alongside Norwegian aircraft, this will be the first time Lancers will operate out of a base in the country, according to U.S. European Command.

Some Airmen already have deployed to the base as part of an advance team before the aircraft arrive. Eventually, more than 200 Airmen will arrive at the base as part of the Bomber Task Force. The Airmen were medically screened before deploying and will quarantine for 10 days once arriving.

EUCOM did not disclose how long the bombers will be at the base, but they will conduct training with allies, including operating in the "high north" and across Europe.

"Operational readiness and our ability to support Allies and partners and respond with speed is critical to combined success," Gen. Jeffrey L Harrigian, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa commander, said in the release. "We value the enduring partnership we have with Norway and look forward to future opportunities to bolster our collective defense."

Russia follows US to withdraw from Open Skies Treaty | Defense News - AP |

Russia said it will withdraw from an international treaty allowing observation flights over military facilities following the U.S. exit from the pact.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the U.S. withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty last year "significantly upended the balance of interests of signatory states," adding that Moscow's proposals to keep the treaty alive after the U.S. exit have been cold-shouldered by Washington's allies.

The ministry said Russia is now launching the relevant procedural moves to withdraw from the pact "due to the lack of progress in removing the obstacles for the treaty's functioning in the new conditions." The Russian parliament, which ratified the treaty in 2001, will now have to vote to leave it.

The treaty was intended to build trust between Russia and the West by allowing the accord's more than three dozen signatories to conduct reconnaissance flights over each other's territories to collect information about military forces and activities.

U.S. President Donald Trump declared Washington's intention to pull out of the Open Skies Treaty in May, arguing that Russian violations made it untenable for the United States to remain a party. The U.S. completed its withdrawal from the pact in November.

Is Harvard denying Tenure to Cornel West over his views on Palestine? | Informed Comment |

This controversy would not be addressed at Informed Comment, perhaps, except for West's assertion that Palestine is at the heart of it.

Professor West told Alvarez,

"I was first tenured 37 years ago at Yale University and have served as University Professor -- the highest faculty position -- at Harvard and Princeton. Therefore, the only grounds I can conceive of Harvard's refusal to pursue a tenure process for me are age and politics. Like everyone, I grow old. However, the recent invitation extended to me to give the prestigious Gifford Lectures in Edinburgh, Scotland, leads me to conclude that some people believe I have something significant yet to say. In regards to politics, I do not believe that my intense and joyful support of my dear brother Bernie Sanders for president is a cause of any concern on behalf of the powers that be at Harvard. So, I surmise it must be my deep Christian witness based on the idea that an ugly Israeli occupation of precious Palestinians is as wrong as any ugly Palestinian occupation of precious Jews. I would bear any burden or pay any cost in order to stay in contact with the precious humanity of any oppressed people."

West is saying here that in his youth when his views on the Palestine issue were not so well known (or perhaps had not evolved to where they are today), he had no problem getting tenure at universities like Yale.

It is certainly the case that using language like "an ugly Israeli occupation of precious Palestinians" would be enough to keep someone from being hired at most American universities. This is because many pro-Israel professors and administrators (as well as those hoping for big donations from pro-Israel donors) are corrupt, and are entirely willing to misuse their positions to silence voices that are inconvenient for Israeli propaganda.

Spiked New York Times column on reporter's exit published by New York Post | The Guardian |

Bret Stephens piece criticizing newspaper's handling of Donald McNeil departure over racist language was pulled by senior bosses.

The high-profile science and health reporter Donald McNeil Jr resigned from the paper earlier this month following disclosures about his use of racist language on a company-sponsored trip to Peru with high school students in 2019. He apologised for offending his colleagues and hurting the reputation of his former employer.

At the time of his resignation, the executive editor, Dean Baquet, said: "We do not tolerate racist language regardless of intent."

On Thursday, columnist Bret Stephens told colleagues that a column he had written that criticised Baquet's statement had been spiked by the paper's publisher AG Sulzberger, NBC reported.

U.S. Sanctions Russian Ship Working On Nord Stream 2 Pipeline | RFERL - Jan. 20, 2021 |

The United States has imposed sanctions on a Russian vessel in a bid to stop completion of the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which would carry Russian natural gas to Europe under the Baltic Sea.

The sanctions against the Russian pipe-laying ship Fortuna and its owner, KVT-RUS, is a departing salvo against Nord Stream 2 as President Donald Trump leaves office after hotly contesting the pipeline.

U.S. State and New Europe

The U.S. government and several EU members want to prevent the pipeline from being completed, saying it will strengthen Russia's energy hold on Europe and undercut Ukraine's role as a transit country for Russian gas.

["Ukraine a hell-hole of oligarch corruptioh" - Oui]

"Nord Stream 2, if completed, would give Russia the means to completely bypass Ukraine, depriving Ukraine of vital revenues and opening it up to further Russian aggressive actions, while providing the means to use natural resources as a tool of political pressure and malign influence against Western Europe," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

Opponents criticise Nord Stream 2 on environmental, geopolitical, and security grounds

Recent developments

Bloomberg reported on 19 February that the U.S. might hold off on sanctioning German companies involved in the Nord Stream 2 project, as the Biden administration seeks to halt the project without antagonizing a close European ally. It would instead put only a small number of Russia-linked entities on the list.

German, U.S. and international media such as Handelsblatt, Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times reported in mid-February that the administration of new President Joe Biden might be willing to make a deal with Germany on Nord Stream 2, according to government sources.

He's Saying One Thing and Then He's Doing Another.' Rep. Madison Cawthorn Peddles a Different Kind of Trumpism in a Post-Trump World |TIME |

While offering different messages to different audiences is hardly unique inside the Beltway, Cawthorn's brand of shape-shifting is emblematic of this broader moment in national politics. As the Trump era ends, the Republican Party is struggling to chart a future course in which it both retains the support of Trump's expansive base, while jettisoning the controversial former President.

Cawthorn's potential power, as a rising Republican star, is rooted in his apparent ability to navigate this tight rope. Though the gun-toting, Twitter-wielding freshman is a Trump acolyte, both in his political views and personal positioning, he has differentiated himself from his similarly hardline fellow freshmen, like newly-elected Rep. Lauren Boebert, who tweeted the movement of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as a rioter allegedly stalked the Capitol with zip ties, and fellow newcomer Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who embraced QAnon and wore a Stop The Steal mask on Capitol Hill. Cawthorn,
