Caucasian Spring Rocks Dutch Narco-State - The Elephant - Satire

Many analysts consider the toppling of Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who is still in office pending fresh elections in March, as the trigger for the Caucasian Spring which has already claimed Donald "Papa Don" Trump, the far-white ruler of food-insecure, oil-rich United States; Julie Payette, the colonial governor of Canada; and Giuseppe Conte, Prime Minister of chronically unstable, crime-ridden Italy.

Meanwhile, in the ethnically divided, kingdom of Britain, where the nonagenarian Queen Elizabeth II has clung to power for nearly 70 years, corrupt strongman, Boris Johnson, apologized and took responsibility for his regime's handling of the pandemic which has now claimed over 100,000 British lives on the wet and inhospitable island.

The beleaguered nation has had its pain compounded by the Brexit peace deal it signed with 27 countries in Off-white Europe which has increased hardship and food shortages in the restive, separatist, tribal enclaves of North Ireland and Scotland.

For whom was Borrell's mission in Russia a failure? [In Russian]
An interesting article from the head of Russian Institute of International Political and Economic Strategies, Yelena Panina.

She assumes that Borrell was staged to fail by "Euroatlantists". Her points are that the meeting was arranged a long time ago for improving the relations, but at last moment Navalnyi was pushed in to the agenda. And he was not told before that Russia was expelling diplomats even though it was known to at least those countries whose diplomats were expelled.

Once again, the U.S. has succeeded in pushing Europe away from the alignment of relations with Russia. This alignment is unacceptable to the U.S. right now - Biden is just entering the process and has not yet had time to prioritize things. Washington is demanding a veto over Europe's relations with Russia, and if not given easily, it will try to take it by force.

This does not work with Russia, but it does work with Europe, so Borrell goes to Russia, finds himself in an awkward position and has to justify himself. Europe cannot conduct diplomacy without the consent of the United States. From the US point of view, Europe's sovereignty is unacceptable, and Borrel's showdown in the European media should serve as further evidence of this.

She also makes the point that Russia is trying to deal with USA and EU separately, but at times the signals will get mixed. She assumes that is because EU so often acts on behalf of US.

The Elephant
Last week, the Caucasian Spring revolution roiling the West intensified as riots broke out across Holland, the world's sixth largest banana exporter, and a notorious narco-state located in the nether regions of sub-Scandinavian Europe.

The violent demonstrations which started in the capital, Amsterdam on Sunday, have rapidly spread to other major cities, such as Eindhoven in the south of the country. Angry anti-science protesters are demanding fundamental freedoms and defying a curfew that the caretaker administration claims is necessary to contain the rampaging covid-19 pandemic that has claimed nearly 14,000 Dutch lives.

[...]

Even worse, the harsh terms of the peace deal have grounded a major fishing boat, the Kirkella, which supplies up to 12 percent of the fish sold in the kingdom's fish and chips shops, threatening one of the few local delicacies in the island's otherwise unpalatable boiled diet. Analysts fear the resulting flavour shortage could spark even more unrest and bring the Caucasian Spring to the reclusive nation's shores.

Exclusive: Baker Hughes, AXA Group, 16 others quit Nord Stream 2 pipeline - U.S.
The $11 billion pipeline, which would double the capacity of its existing duct, would bypass Ukraine through which Russia has sent gas to Europe for decades. That could deprive Ukraine of lucrative transit fees and potentially undermine its struggle against Russian aggression.

The United States, the world's top gas producer, also would like to export liquefied natural gas to Europe as an alternative to Russian gas.
[...]
Ned Price, the State Department spokesman, told reporters this week the fact that the companies quit with sanctions looming "demonstrates that the legislative goals and our actions are having a good effect."

He said the State Department continues to "examine entities involved in potentially sanctionable activity." Price has also said "sanctions are only one" of many tools in response to Nord Stream 2.

I am frankly unable to follow the arguments in the Salmond v. Sturgeon situation in Scotland, but the following quote sounds suspiciously like the sort of thing that has been a constant refrain in, for example, the harassment difficulties of the Roman Catholic Church.

"Maybe creating an alternative reality in which the organs of the state [were] all part of some wild conspiracy against him [Salmond], for reasons I can't explain, maybe that's just easier than accepting at the root of all this might just have been issues in his own behaviour," she [Sturgeon] said. "But that's for him to explain, if he ever decides to pitch up and sit in front of the committee."

As far as I can tell the Labour party gave up on that whole opposition business, so Scottish independence struggles are basically the only thing left that could politically embarrass the Tories. So now the SNP went from a picture of competence compared to Jeremy Corbyn's Labour to "scandal plagued". Funny how that happens.

Supreme Court allows release of Trump's tax returns to NY prosecutors
Monday's ruling concerns a subpoena that Vance had issued to Trump's accountants Mazars USA in August 2019 ordering it to furnish documents stretching back to 2011.

"The work continues," Vance said in a three-word statement issued after the ruling.

Vance's probe was initially focused on payments made before the 2016 presidential election to two women who claim they had affairs with Trump, including porn star Stormy Daniels.

But the state-level investigation is also now examining possible allegations of tax evasion, and insurance and bank fraud.

Peak Gas Is Coming to the U.S. Sooner Than Anyone Expected
Renewables, meanwhile, still carried the stigma of hippie-ish science experiments that depended on government support and couldn't provide around-the-clock electricity as long as the sun set and the wind ebbed. But the arrival of big-storage batteries has meant that wind and solar power will slowly be less dependent on the whims of weather, calling into question assumptions that there would be plenty of need for new gas alongside renewables. Solar farms backed up by batteries are already beating out gas on costs in parts of the U.S. Southwest , thanks in part to sharply falling prices of lithium-ion systems.

Icy blast of anti-Ted Cruz outrage shows little sign of abating

Wintry conditions eased in Texas on Friday, but a storm of outrage continued to build over Senator Ted Cruz's quick trip to Cancún, Mexico, at a time when millions of his constituents were still stranded without heat, food and water.

"Texans' anger with Ted Cruz right now could power an entire electrical grid," a Houston Chronicle editorial blasted. "He plopped himself down on a direct flight to paradise and left us to fend for ourselves in this frozen hell."

China New Year gala show sparks new racism controversy with blackface performance
BEIJING (Reuters) - China's state broadcaster has come under fire once more for a performance featuring dancers made up to look African during its annual gala show to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

During CCTV's four-hour show which typically draws hundreds of millions of viewers, performers appeared on stage wearing outfits that approximated African clothing and had darkened their skin with make-up.

"The New Year Gala director team is just stupid and vicious," said one of a number of users who took to Weibo, China's Twitter-like social media platform, to criticise the skit.

"Is there any difference between Chinese people doing blackface and white people slanting their eyes to make fun of Asians?"

China's foreign ministry said the integration of cultural elements from other countries into Chinese shows was a sign of respect and the inclusion of the African segment was not a diplomatic issue.

Strong quake hits off coast of Fukushima, shakes Tokyo - Asahi Shimbun
A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 hit off the coast of eastern Japan on Feb. 13, shaking buildings and triggering widespread blackouts, but there appeared to be no major damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

The epicenter of the earthquake was off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture at a depth of 60 km, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. It hit at 11:08 p.m. local time and shook buildings in the capital Tokyo and elsewhere.

No tsunami warning had been issued, the meteorological agency said.

Some 950,000 households were initially without power, government spokesman Katsunobu Kato told a briefing carried on public broadcaster NHK. The blackouts appeared to be concentrated in northeast Japan, including Fukushima and neighboring prefectures.

There were no irregularities at the Fukushima No. 1 and No.2 nuclear power plants or at the Kahiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant, owner Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

Bolivia's former President Evo Morales on Thursday welcomed the central bank's decision to return a $346.7 million loan and interest to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Morales congratulated President Luis Arce's return of "the surrender, onerous and conditional credit assumed by the dictatorship against the interests of our people."

The interim government of Jeanine Anez approved the loan last year amid a political crisis following Morales' forced resignation in 2019.

That's what Jean-Michel Connard's brother resorted to in Texas this week. The survival bucket. He's been dreaming of civilization falling apart for months now. Turns out, the guy wasn't even ready for a power outage. He can't cook anything. He can't open any of his canned food.

The brother's brilliant survival plan depended on natural gas and kitchen appliances, including an electric can opener. He's currently eating cold ravioli and complaining to his mom.

Groundhog Day - Wikipedia
Groundhog Day (Pennsylvania German: Grund'sau dåk, Grundsaudaag, Grundsow Dawg, Murmeltiertag; Nova Scotia: Daks Day)[1] is a popular North American tradition observed in the United States and Canada on February 2. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks; but if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early.

He died after contracting Covid-19 while treating patients in Wuhan.

Dr Li had tried to warn fellow medics of a disease that looked like Sars - another deadly coronavirus.

But he was told by police to "stop making false comments" and was investigated for "spreading rumours".
