Is exactly 365 days after his announcement of going for Herd Immunity in conjunction with Boris Johnson and Donald Trump, his Conservative fellow travelers. Rutte got a golden tip (MP Omtzigt) as a contract was offered by Oxford University through Leiden University to invest just €10 million to take part in AstraZeneca manufacturing at Halix in Leiden.

If one rides the bull through the pandemic to gain natural herd immunity, why waste precious Euros on a vaccine?

Just like his friend, the former White House occupant who was impeached twice, it is possible PM Mark Rutte can be send off twice in 2021 by Dutch Lower House.

Excellent summary ...

A sticky mess for 'Teflon Mark' | BBC Hague correspondent - Anna Holligen |

The scene inside the normally tame Dutch parliament was at times gladiatorial.
For 12 gruelling hours, MPs questioned Mark Rutte's credibility, integrity and history of memory loss.

When the notes emerged revealing he had in fact discussed Pieter Omtzigt's future, he said he had misremembered and not lied.

The man nicknamed "Teflon Mark" demonstrated Houdini-like abilities to extricate himself from what had seemed an inescapable mess.

And yet images of the caretaker prime minister, sprinting through the corridors of parliament in the early hours of the morning, pursued by journalists with their microphones attached to sticks - to allow for socially-distanced interviews - gave the impression of an animal being hunted.
But his real predators are inside the chamber.

Mr Rutte made it back to the blue seats alongside them on time and survived, but he's bruised and vulnerable, his authority has been compromised.

This turbulent experience will inevitably have an impact on the shape and direction of the new government, and there are no guarantees Mark Rutte will be leading it.

He must still find other parties prepared to join forces with him to form the next coalition.

His closest allies and intended coalition partners, Sigrid Kaag and Wopke Hoekstra, proposed the motion critical of his conduct. Whether their aim was to throw him a lifeline or lay a gangplank, only the choppy weeks ahead will tell.

Morning papers, headlines ...

A damaged Rutte loses role in coalition talks | NRC |

A fortnight ago the election gave Mark Rutte a mandate ... the scouts and particularly Mark Rutte created a mess and left The Hague in chaos. Also the second pair of scouts were dismissed during the long night debate as all trust in Rutte and his Conservative party VVD was lost. A new scout will be appointed and needs to be a person independent from the leading parties in The Hague. The proces has start from scratch and will take a long time to build a coalition.

Mark Rutte was saved by the votes of the four parties in the present caretaker coalition. A show presented to the electorate that clinging to power is more important than transparency and full disclosure.

Rutte will be remembered not for longevity of power, but for his preference to big business and distancing government from the people it should serve. The age of greed, the individual and the stock market has infiltrated Dutch society. For me it's unrecognizable as social democracy should behold solidarity with the less fortunate. Reagonomics on a global scale.

Wrong description ... certainly not "standing".. more limping or leaning on a D66 Sigrid Kaag who ran a campaign on "transparency" and already fails the voters. Ms Kaag is still drunk from the glorious surprise win to finish in 2nd place, upending the left-wing parties, Christian Democrats and Geert Wilders. The coming polls will be quite harsh ...

From the papers ...

Craftiness

'A fourth cabinet under the leadership of Mark Rutte is a long way off,' the AD said in its analysis. Integrity and Rutte don't go together in the yes of many non-VVD voters, the paper said. In the ten years of being prime minister Rutte survived many a crisis `but a slight air of craftiness always remained.

'Loss of memory, broken promises, withheld information, documents that only appear after MPs and journalists press for them...' the paper enumerated Rutte's failings. 'And now this!'

According to the Telegraaf a cabinet formation so marred by controversy as this one predicts a very small chance of success for a resulting cabinet. 'It will be a 'vechtkabinet'', with parties continually at each other's throats, the paper said.

The Financieele Dagblad foresees the `end of Mark Rutte's hegemony' pointing out the seriousness of the matter by singling out the 'usually amenable' SGP [Staatkundig Gereformeerde Partij - Orthodox Calvinist Political Party] which supported the motion of no confidence against Mark Rutte and called it 'a historical step in the existence of the country's oldest party'.

The Dutch don't believe Mark Rutte in today's polling stands at 81%. Trust in his quality as leader tumbled from 54% a fortnight ago to 25% today. The members of his own Liberal Conservative party are alone in keeping trust in Mark Rutte. Not a single party is willing to enter a coalition with the VVD when Mark Rutte becomes Prime Minister.

Earlier today Gert-Jan Segers, leader of the Christian Union (CU), the smallest party in the current coalition, explicitly ruled out joining a government with Rutte as PM due to his governing  style. Even after 13 hours of literally every party leader in parliament telling him the same, even after having the same accusation (rightfully ) voiced against him in parliament in earlier crises he has the hutzpah to say that he is hurt by Segers words because they come "our of the blue". The arrogance is astonishing.

Theoretically, with every non-coalition party voting for the motion of disapproval (including even the hard right Christians of the SGP who almost never vote in favour of such motions) there no longer is a possibility of a government with Rutte as PM. We'll have to see if that is true.

The arrogance after winning 22.7% of the vote (34 seats out of 150). Sure the VVD is the largest, but in recent weeks Rutte lost 10 seats. Most important is whether Sigrid Kaag and Wopke Hoekstra will show backbone. The vote of no-confidence was principled whether is was constitutional to dismiss a caretaker Prime Minister who had functioned as the party leaders of the VVD in these talks with scouts. The so-called Opinion polls of EenVandaag have very limited scientific base, and may turn around in a fortnight. Interesting that the CDA have found a new (temporary) chairman in Marnix van Rij. See his quarrel with Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in 2001. Christian Democrats have tried policy as Conservatives Lite (VVD Lite) and lost their electorate.

In 2001 competed with De Hoop Scheffer about the party leadership of the CDA. The CDA did structurally poorly in 2001 in the polls (approx. 25 seats). Many members of the party had lost faith in De Hoop Scheffer. After both De Rij and De Hoop Scheffer had withdrawn from that battle, Jan Pieter Balkenende eventually emerged as leader.

Both Marnix and Jaap had the ambition to become PM of the Netherlands ...

Far-right parties PVV and Forum for Democracy have been excluded by almost all other parties, including the VVD, for several substantive reasons. Possible left-leaning coalition partners PvdA, SP, and GroenLinks signed the no-confidence motion on Thursday, as did the rest of the opposition (73 seats).

The entire Chamber, except Rute's own VVD, disapproved of his performance in relation to the formation of a new cabinet. It is the first censure motion passed against a prime minister since World War II.

Government ministers conspiring in lies with serious financial consequences for a large number of its citizens and family members should just get out of The Hague. So many occasions to support Trump of the US, Boris Johnson of the UK ... Conservative PM Mark Rutte let's Dutch Navy join Global Britain in action advancing on disputed waters in the  South China Sea ... wtf.

The full UK Carrier Strike Group assembled for the first time during Group Exercise 2020 in October. The aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth leads a flotilla from the UK, US and The Netherlands.

The largest naval flotilla assembled by Britain in recent years will set sail in May on a months' long voyage through the Pacific, the country's Defense Ministry said Monday.

"When our Carrier Strike Group (CSG) sets sail next month, it will be flying the flag for Global Britain -- projecting our influence, signaling our power, engaging with our friends and reaffirming our commitment to addressing the security challenges of today and tomorrow," UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said Monday.

"The UK is not stepping back but sailing forth to play an active role in shaping the international system of the 21st century," Wallace said.

The strike group will be led by the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, marking its maiden deployment. The ship, one of the UK's two aircraft carriers, is the largest warship the UK has ever sent to sea.

Kim Putters, head of the socio-cultural planning agency SCP, said the new cabinet should prioritise restoring trust in politics in the wake of the child benefits scandal that prompted the last government's resignation.

'People's trust in the political system is under pressure,' said Putters, adding that politicians needed to show that they were `taking people's concerns seriously'.

His words were echoed by national ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen, who warned in 2017 that the tax office's overzealous pursuit of families suspected of defrauding the child benefit system was causing serious hardship and injustice.

Van Zutphen said: 'When I speak to people they don't distinguish much between the political world, a government agency or a department. To the ordinary citizen it's all the government, and they're the ones who have to change their behaviour.'
