Blood clots as prevalent with Pfizer and Moderna vaccine as with AstraZeneca's: study, 15 April
According to the study, 4 in 1 million people experience cerebral venous thrombosis after getting the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, versus 5 in 1 million people for the AstraZeneca vaccine. The risk of getting CVT is much higher for those who get COVID-19 -- 39 in a million patients -- than it is for those who get vaccinated.
CVT statistical analysis, January 20, 2020 and March 25, 2021
cohorts:  Pfizer BNT162b2, Moderna mRNA-1273 (N=489,871); AstraZeneca ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (N=34M), Janssen Ad26.COV2-S (N=N/A)
controls: influenza (N=172,742), COVID-19 (N=513,284)
The risk of being diagnosed with a CVT was significantly higher in the two weeks after COVID-19 compared to influenza or after receiving an mRNA vaccine. The  risk associated  with  COVID-19 was  also  higher than:(a) that currently reported by the EMA following vaccination with the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine;(b) the overall incidence observed inthe TriNetX network or (c) the historical incidence of CVT in the USA.

Nikolai Glushkov: Putin critic 'strangled in London home by third party'

A Russian exile was strangled in his own home by a third party, a coroner has ruled.

Businessman Nikolai Glushkov, who was critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was found dead in New Malden in south-west London in March 2018.

West London Coroner's Court heard there was evidence to suggest his death was made to look like a suicide and there had been "third-party involvement".

Putin has always been thuggish and has long used political homicides as an instrument of state policy. He, Kim, to a slightly lesser Erdogan, and MBS are soul mates in that regard. Don't expect change while they remain in power. One can only hope that they will turn  on each other or fall victim to the same tactics themselves.

I doubt they'll fall out. The plan is to remake Western governments in their image. These extreme nationalists all understand each other - and I'd add Netanyahu, Modi, and Jinping to the list.

Putin is particularly dangerous. The Trump Coup nearly succeeded, and it's unlikely that will be his last attempt to install a puppet government in the US. Just as Brexit won't be his last attempt to install a compliant far-right nationalist regime in the EU.

Hold the Jokes, Please: Aeroflot Buffs Its Image | NY Times - June 25, 1997 | [cached]

CFO of Aeroflot is Nikolai Glushkov, who is also acting chairman of Logovaz, a leading media and oil conglomerate founded by Boris A. Berezovsky. Mr. Berezovsky, who handed control of Logovaz over to Mr. Glushkov when he became deputy secretary of the National Security Council, is a business leader who helped to bankroll Mr. Yeltsin's re-election campaign last summer. Mr. Berezovsky's companies are a symbol of the cozy co-dependence between big business and the Kremlin.

Family members of Yeltsin were well cared for. The risks came much later in the Putin era. Berezovsky lost out too in London in a feud with the Chelsea magnate who is now exiled in Tel Aviv. Great stuff.

Germany's Greens chancellor candidate vows to get tough on Russia and China
Regarding the Ukrainian government's wish to join the European Union and NATO, Baerbock said sovereign states could decide their alliances for themselves, but added that for now it was more important to reach a de-escalation in the region.

Turning to China, Baerbock said China was too big to simply cut off ties. Still, liberal democracies must uphold their values which means Europe could, for example, think about banning certain products, she said.... Baerbock also called for a European army under the supervision of the European Parliament and outlined steps towards a de-nuclearisation of Germany in consultation with allies.

There were no immediate reports of a possible motive for Friday's shooting, however police said the murder was clearly carefully planned.

Bus torched in Belfast on sixth night of unrest in Northern Ireland
The loyalist gathering at Lanark Way was organised via social media, with Facebook posts shared on other platforms.
[...]
Since last Friday there has been nightly violence in parts of Northern Ireland, including in Belfast, Derry and parts of county Antrim, fuelled by loyalist anger over a recent decision not to prosecute Sinn Féin leaders over attendance at a mass funeral.

The DUP has expressed fury over the decision, with Foster, its leader, saying it reflects one rule for Sinn Féin and another for ordinary voters who have lost loved ones during the pandemic and have been unable to attend funerals.
[...]
[João Vale de Almeida, the EU ambassador to the UK] said the EU was "fully committed in a constructive way to find solutions for those problems" but it had to be "within the limits of the protocol that we have agreed not long ago".

Blinken revokes sanctions on ICC officials imposed by Trump
Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday announced the U.S. is revoking sanctions imposed by the former Trump administration on prosecutors and officials associated with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague.

"These decisions reflect our assessment that the measures adopted were inappropriate and ineffective," Blinken said in a statement.

The sanctions were removed from ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and Phakiso Mochochoko, the head of the Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division of the Office of the Prosecutor.

The State Department further terminated separate visa restrictions imposed in 2019 on certain ICC personnel.

The Trump administration protested against ICC investigations into alleged war crimes by U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan and investigations of alleged war crimes by Israel against Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

2020 Census Apportionment Results Delivered to the President
• After the 1790 Census, each member of the House represented about 34,000 residents. Since then, the House has more than quadrupled in size (from 105 to 435 seats), and each member will represent an average of 761,169 people based on the 2020 Census.

• Texas will gain two seats in the House of Representatives, five states will gain one seat each (Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina, and Oregon), seven states will lose one seat each (California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia), and the remaining states' number of seats will not change based on the 2020 Census.

Upon receipt of the apportionment counts, the president will transmit them to the 117th Congress. The reapportioned Congress will be the 118th, which convenes in January 2023.

Apparently the population of Mississippi (blue on above map, just to the east of the Mississippi River, with panhandle to the coast) has dropped (slightly, about 6000 people) in absolute numbers.

This is in an overall situation where the South is the fastest growing region of the country. And regardless of whether the census-taking system might have had some inherent or systemic bias, it seems that the loss is primarily in the white community. The African American and Latinx count went up, but the white numbers went down by more: about 48,000 in a state of 3 million.

Apparently everybody is moving to Texas. Another theory is that the republican good ol' boys refused to fill out that dang govermint paperwork.

As I have written before, these incidents have to be balanced against the tens or hundreds of thousands of deaths averted by the vaccine. Vaccination isn't magic.  The surprise, to me, is the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines don't have severe side effects.  To be 100% accurate it is known anaphylaxis occurs in 2 to 5 people per million but that is not life-threatening since it happens with 30 minutes of getting shot and is treatable.

"We are facilitating," he added. "Some states have the money and they are willing to pay for it [?!], whether it's for local or imported vaccines."

'Hope There's No Quid Pro Quo': Is US Expecting Something in Return for COVID Aid to India?
Former Indian diplomat M.K. Bhadrakumar says the Biden administration's overnight turnaround to help India should be taken with a pinch of salt, recalling the US' "diplomatic history of transactional relationships".
"The big question is whether the US is relenting on the vaccine front with a view to cutting a deal with India on Afghanistan," Bhadrakumar, India's former envoy to Turkey and Uzbekistan, wrote in a column published in the Asia Times this week.
"The thought of it, of course, is very frightening. But if past experience is any guide, Washington has shown itself savvy at exploiting India's difficulties," he adds.

The true cost of fossil fuel subsidies, free traders' edition
Monday's study, authored by Yale University economist Matthew Kotchen, explores "implicit subsidies," which are different the traditionally thought-of government tax benefits provided directly to corporations. (Those are called "direct subsidies," and fossil fuel companies get about $20 billion of those per year).

Implicit subsidies are financial benefits fossil fuel companies receive indirectly, because current U.S. policy does not make them pay for most of the externalized costs of their products: namely, "environmental damages, public health effects, and transportation-related costs."

A third of COVID survivors suffer neurological or mental disorders: study, data mining melodrama
Lancet | A longer look at COVID-19 and neuropsychiatric outcomes, litany of limitations
This suggests that, although almost all neurological and psychiatric outcomes were more frequent in patients with more severe COVID-19 than in those with mild disease, these psychiatric disorders might be more driven by general effects, including psychosocial aspects of infection, rather than a direct effect of COVID-19 on the brain.

We already knew about the link between Covid-19 and obvious brain damage such as strokes (bleeding in the brain) that can be seen on x-rays, CAT scans, etc.

The link between non-obvious, i.e., non-detectable, brain damage and mental dysfunction - associated with norepinephrine or dopamine cycle damage to the raphe nuclei or ventral tegmental area, respectively, or both? - is suspected, has been reported, and AFAIK not proven.  Either or both of these can manifest as anxiety, depression, bipolar, or schizophrenia since our knowledge of the brain/mind Unity is still in the very early stages of understanding.

The Guardian
New Zealanders have quietly acknowledged an anniversary this week: Moehanga Day, or the day Māori "discovered" Britain.

In a tongue-in-cheek nod to their former colonial power, some Kiwis have began an annual remembrance of the first trip by a Māori to London.

That man was Moehanga of Northland's Ngāpuhi tribe, who reached Britain in 1806, before New Zealand officially became a British colony in 1840.

yeah, I immediately did a simple survey of pressestimates. While I would not be surprised if Cahill proposes concurrent time, the press implies consecutive min-max for each count. I found 5 stories citing "sentencing guidelines," ranging 30-75 years, the lower-bound expressing lenience, because  (wait for it) he's a first-time offender. MN atty-gen Keith Ellison's recommendation, being duly dismissed by all but REUTERS, is max.

So much for Trial of the Century: Eyes have already drifted beyond Chauvin's four PD accomplices awaiting trial to three FRESH! incidents of "police-involved" shootings.

'Treated with particular cruelty': Minnesota attorney general requests severe sentence for Derek Chauvin in George Floyd killing murder
Keith Ellison said in a legal brief filed in Minnesota's Hennepin County District Court.
The State respectfully requests an aggravated sentence for Defendant Derek Chauvin, a former police officer convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of George Floyd. [case law citations] The facts proven beyond a reasonable doubt at trial demonstrate that five aggravating factors support an upward sentencing departure. ...

"Mr. Floyd was treated with particular cruelty . . . Defendant continued to maintain his position atop Mr. Floyd even as Mr. Floyd cried out that he was in pain, even as Mr. Floyd exclaimed 27 times that he could not breathe, and even as Mr. Floyd said that Defendant's actions were killing him," Ellison said.
[...]
[Defense attorney Eric Nelson] said Floyd was not treated with particular cruelty, saying that there is no evidence that the assault perpetrated by Chauvin involved gratuitous pain that's not usually associated with second-degree murder.
[...]
Prosecutors did not specify how much time they would seek for Chauvin.

Facebook takes down (and restores) official page for French town of Bitche
Facebook has 99 problems, and the French town of Bitche is one.

According to local broadcaster Radio Mélodie, the Facebook page for the small town in northeastern Moselle was taken down on March 19, forcing Valérie Degouy, Bitche's comms official, to create a new page on Monday named after its postal code: Mairie 57230.

Degouy told Radio Mélodie on Monday that she appealed the decision the same day the town's page was taken down, but hadn't heard back from the tech giant. "I tried to reach out to Facebook in every possible way, through different forms, but there's nothing [I could] do," she said, adding that she had "already had issues when I first created the page."

Facebook restored the page after this article was published on Tuesday morning.

Fugging hell: tired of mockery, Austrian village changes name

Residents of an Austrian village will ring in the new year under a new name - Fugging - after ridicule and repeated theft of their signposts became too much to bear.

They finally grew weary of Fucking, its current name, which some experts say dates back to the 11th century.

Minutes from a municipal council meeting published on Thursday showed that the village of about 100 people will be named Fugging from 1 January 2021.
