Austria's new law on `political Islam' opens door for crackdown on Muslims | TRT World - Nov. 12, 2020 |
After a hijab and face veil ban, Austria's right wing government is set to introduce draconian measures against expressions of "political Islam."
Austria's right-wing Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has announced a raft of new measures which would make "political Islam" a criminal offence.
Kurz used Twitter to announce the new policy stating "In the fight against political Islam, we will create a criminal offense called `political Islam' in order to be able to take action against those who are not terrorists themselves, but who create the breeding ground for such."
The announcement caught many by surprise. The draconian measures do not define "political Islam" nor do they lay out the extent that daily Muslim practices and needs could be now criminalized as a result of this new law.

Hungary only nation against EU call for Israel-Hamas ceasefire | EuroNews |
Hungary is the only EU country not to support an EU declaration calling for a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians, according to the bloc's foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell.
EU foreign ministers met for a special meeting Tuesday to address the surge in violence in Israel and Palestinian Territories, with 26 out of 27 member nations agreeing on a statement.
"The priority is the immediate cessation of all violence and implementation of a ceasefire," said Borrell. "The upsurge of violence has led to a high number of civilian casualties, deaths and injuries, among them a high number of children and women, and that this is unacceptable."
However, Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told AFP news agency; "I have a general problem with the European statements on Israel (...) They are not of much help, especially in the current circumstances, when the tensions are so high."
Death toll rising as Israel hits Gaza, Hamas hits Israel
At least 212 Palestinians have been killed in heavy airstrikes so far, including 61 children, and over 1,400 people wounded, Gaza's Health Ministry said. Ten people in Israel, including a 5-year-old boy, have been killed in rocket attacks launched towards civilian areas in Israel.
EU statement calls for security, to restore political horizon
Borrell also said in the statement that: "We support the right to defence for Israel and right to security - also for the Palestinians - and we consider that security for Israel and Palestine requires a true political solution, because only a true political solution could bring peace, and to do that we need to restore a political horizon".

US Joe Biden Partners with Israel in Gaza Carnage
EU: Israel's E. Jerusalem policy endangers final-status talks | Haaretz - Nov. 25, 2005 |
Unpublished report, which has been presented to EU council, says Israeli action could 'radicalize' Arabs.
TEL AVIV -- The European Union's diplomatic representatives have sharply criticized Israel's policies in East Jerusalem, saying it is using settlements and the West Bank separation fence to create a "de facto annexation of Palestinian land". The unpublished report warns that the Israeli measures "are reducing the possibility of reaching a final-status agreement on Jerusalem that any Palestinian could accept," The New York Times reported.
United States President Joe Biden wants to focus on the Communist People's Republic of China as his priority, did not want to be involved in the Middle East. Has no capital left to waste on Israel and the Palestinian issue and by absence accepts the policy set by the Trump administration. The JCPOA deal does concern him, but his blunt negotiating style will not get a new deal done before the June elections in Iran. No moderate will be elected, a new Ahmadinejad will replace the current moderates. Never mind, Joe Biden prefers a neocon solution for regime change anyway.

Eleven children receiving NRC trauma care killed in their homes by Israeli air strikes
The Norwegian Refugee Council confirmed today that 11 of over 60 children killed by Israeli air strikes in Gaza over the last week were participating in its psycho-social programme aimed at helping them deal with trauma.
All of the children between 5 and 15 years old were killed in their homes in densely populated areas along with countless other relatives who died or received injuries.
"We are devastated to learn that 11 children we were helping with trauma were bombarded while they were at home and thought they were safe," said NRC's Secretary General Jan Egeland. " They are now gone, killed with their families, buried with their dreams and the nightmares that haunted them. We call on Israel to stop this madness: children must be protected. Their homes must not be targets. Schools must not be targets. Spare these children and their families. Stop bombing them now."
The children NRC assisted included Lina Iyad Sharir, 15, who was killed with both of her parents in their home on 11 May in Gaza City's Al Manara neighbourhood. Her two-year-old sister Mina sustained third-degree burns and remains in critical condition.
Hala Hussein al-Rifi, 13, was killed on the night of 12 May when an airstrike hit the Salha residential building in Gaza City's Tal Al-Hawa neighbourhood. The attack also killed four-year-old Zaid Mohammad Telbani and his mother Rima, who was five months pregnant. Zaid's sister remains missing and is presumed dead.

NY Times' Bret Stephens is editing a new Jewish journal, starting with an issue on 'Jews and social justice' | JTA |
Bret Stephens has taken on a side gig as the editor of a new limited-run journal of essays about Jewish issues.
The journal, titled Sapir, is an initiative of the Maimonides Fund, an increasingly influential force in Jewish philanthropy that supports Jewish identity-building through media, education and Israel engagement. Over the past year, the fund has also become known for its leadership on COVID relief efforts.
The first of four print issues scheduled for 2021 will land in mid-April and will focus on social justice -- a topic Stephens has addressed in columns that criticize progressive efforts.
"Our first issue is on the subject of Jews and social justice," Stephens wrote in an email to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. "This is a complex, controversial, multidimensional topic. We cover it from a variety of angles -- religious, historical, political, ethical -- and a range of political persuasions."
The new journal comes as the Jewish world debates challenges gripping wider American culture, including racism, anti-Semitism, political polarization and the erosion of democratic norms. Stephens has chimed in to lament "cancel culture" and "wokeness."
