Many Palestinians in Israel live in the mixed cities of Jaffa, Acre, Ramla, Lod, Haifa where Jews and Arabs coexist. Many of them protested during airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, leading to clashes with Jewish extremists. 

The city of Lod has experienced an unprecedented outbreak of violence, jeopardising the coexistence between Arab and Jewish communities in the town. On May 12, Israeli forces in the West Bank city Tulkarem arrested Hazem Naser, a Palestinian camera operator for the Amman-based broadcaster Al-Ghad, according to a report by his employer; he remains in detention today, and authorities have not disclosed the reason for his arrest.

Separately, two members of a right-wing Israeli demonstration in Tel Aviv assaulted a TV crew working for the Israeli public broadcaster Kan News yesterday, according to News reports.

Also, an Israeli air strike injured at least two Palestinian journalists with the Turkish state-owned Anadolu Agency yesterday in Gaza, their employer reported.

Admirers of Kahane were elected to parliament in March as allies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, and one of the most prominent has become a fixture on Israeli TV.

Dozens of far-right Jewish activists in Israel, including the wife of lawmaker Itamar Ben-Gvir, said Tuesday that they had been blocked from using Facebook's WhatsApp messaging app.

Opponents of Ben-Gvir accuse him and his allies of inciting followers to violence.

In its 2020 report, advocacy group Reporters Without Borders said that journalists in Israel "are exposed to open hostility" by politicians.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on trial for corruption charges, routinely accuses the media of being on a "witch hunt" against him. Critics say he has done little to stop supporters from harassing or threatening journalists.

Last week, the journalists' union and Israel Democracy Institute issued a similar call to the country's attorney general and Facebook. They said violent calls that started on social networks have progressed to messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and private Facebook groups, leading to physical attacks on journalists.

Earlier this month, a Telegram channel displaying the emblem of a Jewish ultranationalist group [Kahanists] swelled from a few hundred members to more than 6,000 in just a few days. It was used to mobilize mobs of Israeli Jews to flashpoints, including the Tel Aviv suburb of Bat Yam, where a crowd pulled an Arab man from his car and beat him severely.

Initially, Britain, France, Russia, Austria and the United States opened consulates in Jerusalem and were followed by others. A permanent US consular presence was as such established in 1857, in a building just inside the Jaffa Gate in the Old City. That building today houses the Swedish Christian Study Center.

There is an important distinction between prediction and warning. No one can now predict how the current fighting between Israel and the Palestinians will end, or if it will even pause for a prolonged period - a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas can easily become the prelude to a new low-level, sporadic war of attrition or Intifada. History teaches all too well that any form of new agreement can become the prelude to new acts of political extremism and polarization - to acquiring new arms and defenses, taking new security measures, and creating forms of resistance and terrorism.

The latest rounds of Israeli and Palestinian violence have already reached levels where they are a further barrier to any real and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel has reported that more than 3,400 Hamas rockets had been fired at Israel in the week ending on May 17th. Israel had responded with steadily intensifying precision air strikes on 766 targets, and Hamas claimed that they had resulted in 200 casualties, including 59 children and 35 women - 1,305 injured by the same date - although Israel claimed that more than 130 of those killed were Palestinian militants.

There were reports that Hamas might be seeking a ceasefire, but the fighting and air strikes continued to intensify.1 Even once this fighting does end, it seems far more likely to polarize both sides than bring them together. At the same time, they already seem to be dividing outside states over support of Israel versus support of given Palestinian factions - further making the Palestinian issue one that divides Israel's neighbors or one that they might attempt to exploit.

The Abraham Accords between Israel, Bahrain, Morocco, the Sudan, and the UAE occurred between Israel and states that had never really backed the Palestinians in war and that needed U.S. aid and political support or major U.S. weapons transfer like the F-35. They might, however, have still been the prelude to a broader accommodation between Israel and the Arab world.

However, the renewed attention to the Palestinian issue, the sheer intensity of the current fighting, and the level of civilian casualties and collateral damage caused by Israeli efforts to suppress Hamas's rocket attacks seem likely to reverse such limited progress. It also opens up the risk on added divisions over the peace and Palestinian issues in Jordan, Egypt, and other moderate nations in the Arab world - an issue that Syria, Iran, and the Hezbollah will likely exploit for the Palestinian cause, and one that Russia, China, and Turkey will likely attempt to exploit to their own strategic advantage.

With less than a week remaining in office, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo took to Twitter to boast of his perceived accomplishments as top US diplomat, and has talked up President Donald Trump even as he bleeds support following the storming of the US Capitol last week.

From Tuesday through Friday, Pompeo issued a stream of posts highlighting pro-Israel moves advanced by the Trump administration and other measures he moved forward as secretary of state.

Pompeo is reportedly considering a run for president in 2024, and as an evangelical Christian, he would likely rely on the support of both his own religious community as well as the broader pool of conservative, pro-Israel voters.

Pompeo didn't manage a farewell in Europe ... there were no takers ☹.

"We hear people talk about how the world, their environment and their cities have become dangerous places," said Shiri Daniels, ERAN's director. "They feel that the people around them have become hostile. Their views of themselves are also changing. They no longer feel capable and balanced, but instead have become scared and anxious."

Many of the calls came from mixed Arab-Jewish cities that emerged as flashpoints of mob violence during the recent conflict, according to Daniels. Both an Arab and Jewish Israeli were killed in the fighting.

We are former colleagues and friends leading organizations in the Jewish and Muslim American communities. While we may not agree on every issue, we are in full agreement about the danger of white supremacy and the Islamophobia, anti-Semitism and racism it promotes. In light of the devastating massacre in Christchurch, New Zealand, where 50 Muslim worshipers were gunned down during Friday prayer, it is high time that Jews and Muslims came together to speak with one voice against the divisive and hateful rhetoric in our political discourse.

Palestinian-American Alex Odeh was a passionate defender of Palestinian human rights and advocate of inter-faith unity between Jews, Muslims, and Christians, a loving husband and father, and a talented poet.

Born into a Christian family in the town of Jifna, Palestine, on April 4, 1944, Alex lived through the mass expulsions of Palestinians during Israel's establishment as a Jewish state in 1948 and following Israel's occupation of the West Bank in 1967, becoming a committed advocate for Palestinian rights. As a result of his outspoken support for Palestinian rights, he was assassinated at the office of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), in Santa Ana, California, where he was regional director, in 1985.

For the past 54 years, Israeli authorities have facilitated the transfer of Jewish Israelis to the OPT and granted them a superior status under the law as compared to Palestinians living in the same territory when it comes to civil rights, access to land, and freedom to move, build, and confer residency rights to close relatives. While Palestinians have a limited degree of self-rule in parts of the OPT, Israel retains primary control over borders, airspace, the movement of people and goods, security, and the registry of the entire population, which in turn dictates such matters as legal status and eligibility to receive identity cards.

A number of Israeli officials have stated clearly their intent to maintain this control in perpetuity and backed it up through their actions, including continued settlement expansion ...

And on Friday Boris Johnson, on a visit to a new British aircraft carrier, personally boasted that the warplane "shows how we're driving investment right across the UK, levelling up the country with new technology and new skilled jobs".
