Euro 2020: Don't boo footballers taking the knee, Boris Johnson tells England fans

Denying Racism Is Not Helpful

PM Boris Johnson just like his "hero" Trump refuses to own up to it ... abuse will only spread! A dark day of what should have been a wonderful sports match.

Hand In Hand - Racism and Hooliganism

Back to normalcy of hooliganism ...

On the day the tournament started on 11 June, the prime minister did not condemn fans who jeered when England players took the knee during two warm-up games. Instead, Johnson said he wanted to see fans "getting behind the team to cheer them on" - and was then accused of not having "the guts to call it out" by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

European football's governing body Uefa condemned the "disgusting racist abuse", adding: "We stand by the players and the FA's call for the strongest possible punishments."

On Monday, League Two side Leyton Orient said they had banned a fan for three years in connection with the abuse.

"The supporter in question's actions on Twitter were alerted to the club late last night, and action has been taken swiftly to issue a banning order," the club said.

The Conservative Party's free speech reforms are staggeringly hypocritical

Labour to vote against Tory 'hate speech' bill | The Guardian |

Government plans to "safeguard" free speech in universities would allow Holocaust deniers, anti-vaccination groups and conspiracy theorists to take legal action against higher education organisations that denied them a platform to air their views, Labour said last night.
Announcing that its MPs would vote against the higher education (freedom of speech) bill, which has its second reading in the Commons this week, Labour claimed that it was a hugely divisive and harmful "hate speech bill".

Universities UK and the National Union of Students have also expressed grave concerns about the bill, suggesting it is wildly disproportionate.

UEFA referee can suspend or terminate the match. Realistically, if they cancelled a big international event, they would wake up dead the next morning, but a warning once in a while would help.

Boris Johnson's speech on 'levelling up' decried for lack of substance

by Oui on Fri Jul 16th, 2021 at 06:28:52 AM EST
The UK government is using `levelling up' to hide a crackdown on political dissent | Open Democracy |

Every British prime minister has a set of flagship policies that defines their legacy in office. For Margaret Thatcher, it was privatisation and deregulation. For Tony Blair, it was investment in public services and the Iraq War. For David Cameron, it was austerity and the `Big Society'.

What about Boris Johnson? For many, the answer is obvious: Brexit. But when it comes to domestic policy, the prime minister has yet to leave his mark on the country. After a year spent fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, the closest thing his government has to a flagship policy is the much-trumpeted "levelling-up" agenda.

Officially the aim is to tackle the UK's stark regional inequalities and "rebalance opportunities" across the country. Unofficially it's about cementing Conservative support in traditional Labour strongholds in northern England and the Midlands.

But while the broad objectives may sound sensible, in recent weeks frustration with the policy has been growing. Some have denounced the agenda for being vague and ill-defined, while others have accused the flagship Levelling Up Fund and Towns Fund of being convenient conduits for pork barrel politics.

UK Can Deny Social Services to EU Nationals
As Northern Ireland belongs to the United Kingdom, it can withhold government assistance from a Dutch-Croatian woman with U.K. residency but not U.K. citizenship, the European Court of Justice ruled Thursday.
CG had been granted pre-settled status in the United Kingdom under the EU Settlement Scheme, the process by which EU citizens living in the U.K. prior to Brexit could remain after leaving the union. Some 2.25 million EU nationals are living in the U.K. under this arrangement.

When it was a member of the EU, the U.K. was required to treat EU citizens the same as its own nationals. After Brexit [+ "transition period"], however, there is no longer a reciprocal right to live and work in the U.K. and EU.

so ...
It was the Appeal Tribunal in Northern Ireland that referred the case to the EU's highest court.... The 17-judge panel agreed, writing: "The financial situation of each person concerned should be examined specifically, without taking account of the social benefits claimed, in order to determine whether he or she meets the condition of having sufficient resources."
