Ocean Viking's largest ever rescue - witnessed first-hand
A group of Libyans from an earlier rescue are helping as well, handing out surgical masks, spraying santisers on their hands while welcoming the near new arrivals with pats on the back.

A young man from Bangladesh is in total shock, sobbing uncontrollably into his arm, his right hand shaking as he takes a seat on a wooden bench by the medical module. "Thank you, thank you so much," he says through tears.

The last survivor, out of a 369 saved on this night, stepped onto the Ocean Viking at 3.30 in the morning.

EU border agency to "significantly" step up Lithuania help
[Caption: Migrants from Cameroon rest at the refugee camp in Vydeniai, Lithuania, Saturday, July 10, 2021. European Union member Lithuania has declared a state of emergency due to an influx of migrants from neighboring Belarus in the last few days. ...]
On Friday, Lithuania started building a double barbed wire fence on the Belarus border. It will run for 550 kilometers (342 miles), covering most of the nearly 680-kilometer (423-mile) border and cost 41 million euros ($48 million), according to Lithuanian authorities.
[...]
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, on a visit to Poland on Sunday, said that "technical steps are necessary to make the border work and be a real barrier, because now it can be easily crossed."

Flattery by imitation
Taking their lead from aggressive migration control measures in Denmark and the UK, Lithuania's parliament last week approved the mass detention of migrants and curbed their right of appeal, in a move meant to deter high numbers crossing into the EU from Belarus.

The new law bans any release of migrants from detention for six months after their arrival, curbs the right of appeal for rejected asylum seekers and stipulates that migrants can be deported while their appeals are being considered.

hotel Rwanda
EU rules, the spokesman added, forbid "externalisation" of the right to asylum.

Yet in practice, the bloc drove a coach and horses through this principle when it agreed its multi-billion euro `cash-for-migrants' deal with Recep Erdoğan's Turkey in 2015. ...it established the idea that the EU was prepared to pay to keep migrants away from European soil, and the Commission has been quietly pursuing similar arrangements with a host of African countries ever since.

Peter R de Vries: Dutch crime reporter dies after shooting - BBC
The prominent Dutch crime reporter Peter R de Vries, who was shot and seriously wounded in central Amsterdam nine days ago, has died.

"Peter fought to the end, but was unable to win the battle," a statement from his relatives said.

The 64-year-old was shot in the head minutes after leaving a TV studio.

The shooting shocked the Netherlands, where Mr de Vries was well-known for his investigations of mobsters and drug lords. Two suspects were arrested.

Mr de Vries had won critical acclaim for his reporting on the Dutch underworld - including the 1983 kidnapping of the beer millionaire Freddy Heineken.

Immunized but banned: EU says not all COVID vaccines equal
The officially EU-endorsed vaccines also include those made by Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. They don't include the AstraZeneca shot made in India or many other vaccines used in developing countries, including those manufactured in China and Russia.
[...]
[Dr. Ifeanyi] Nsofor noted that the Indian-made vaccine he received had been authorized by WHO for emergency use and had been supplied through COVAX, the U.N.-backed program to provide shots to poor corners of the world. WHO's approval included a visit to the Serum Institute of India factory to ensure that it had good manufacturing practices and that quality control standards were met.

"We're grateful to the EU that they funded COVAX, but now they are essentially discriminating against a vaccine that they actively funded and promoted," Nsofor said. "This will just give room to all kinds of conspiracy theories that the vaccines we're getting in Africa are not as good as the ones they have for themselves in the West."
[...]
The refusal of some national authorities to recognize vaccines manufactured outside the EU is also frustrating some Europeans immunized elsewhere, including the U.S. Gerard Araud, a former French ambassador to Israel, the U.S. and the U.N., tweeted this week that France's COVID-19 pass is a "disaster" for people vaccinated outside the country.

The most important topic during Macron's visit to French Polynesia: the health effects of the 193 nuclear tests carried out on the atoll of Moruroa, between 1966 and 1996.

France owes a debt to French Polynesia over nuclear tests, says Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron said France was in debt to French Polynesia over nuclear tests that were conducted in the Pacific territory in the 1960s and 1970s.

Speaking in Papeete on Tuesday, Macron said: "I want to break the silence today to make the whole truth heard so it is shared and so the whole world knows exactly what was done and what was known, and what is known today. Everything, everything. I take responsibility and I want truth and transparency with you."

Paris carried out 193 nuclear tests, of which 41 were above the ground, at the atolls of Moruroa and Fangataufa in French Polynesia between 1966 and 1996 as part of its nuclear weapons development programme.

Macron added that France "owes a debt to French Polynesia", admitting that "we absolutely cannot say that they [nuclear tests] were clean - no".
New revelations

In March this year, a groundbreaking report revealed the extent of harm caused to the local population by the tests.

The study, called the Moruroa Files, took two years to be completed and was a collaboration between the French media NGO Disclose, British environmental justice research collective Interprt, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and the Science & Global Security programme at Princeton University.

Former French minister Rachida Dati charged with corruption in Ghosn case - France 24 EN
She is accused both of "passive corruption by a person holding an elective mandate" and of "benefiting from abuse of power" in relation to consulting work she did for Ghosn from 2010 to 2012, when she was also an MP in the European Parliament.

According to a source close to the investigation, Dati received 900,000 euros ($1.06 million) in lawyer's fees during that period.

The investigation is seeking to ascertain if this was purely for legal work or whether she was actually engaged in lobbying, which would be illegal for European lawmakers.

According to Le Monde newspaper, Dati's contract committed her to helping with Renault's international expansion, especially in the Middle East and northern Africa. Dati asked for the work to be kept strictly confidential, Le Monde said.

Employers Can Ban Muslim Veils at Work, Top EU Court Rules

"I am of the opinion that the fact that an employer pursues a policy of political, ideological or religious neutrality in relations with its clients is not inconsistent with the fact that its employees -- visible or invisible -- at work bear signs of political, ideological or religious beliefs that are small -- that is to say, discreet -- and do not stand out at first sight," Advocate General Athanasios Rantos wrote.

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism: Questions and Answers
Which sectors will the new mechanism cover and why were they chosen?

The CBAM will initially apply to imports of the following goods:

  • cement
  • iron and steel
  • aluminium
  • fertilisers
  • electricity
These sectors have a high risk of carbon leakage and high carbon emissions. The administrative feasibility of covering the sectors in the CBAM from the start was also taken into account.

CBAM will be applied to electricity generated in and imported from countries that wish to integrate their electricity markets with the EU until such a point that those electricity markets are fully integrated. At that point, and under strict conditions linked to their implementation of certain obligations and commitments, these countries could be exempted from the mechanism. If that is the case, the EU will revisit any exemptions granted in 2030, at which point those partners should have put in place the decarbonisation measures they have committed to, and an emissions trading system equivalent to the EU's.

Outgoing Bosnia peace envoy imposes jail terms for genocide denial - Euractiv
Bosnia's outgoing international peace overseer decreed amendments to its criminal code on Friday (23 July) to allow jail terms for the denial of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, a frequently expressed view among nationalist Serbs.

The decree by High Representative Valentin Inzko sets jail terms of up to five years for anyone who "publicly condones, denies, grossly trivialises or tries to justify" the genocide or war crimes committed during Bosnia's 1992-95 conflict.

In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces seized the UN-protected enclave of Srebrenica in the country's east and killed about 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys they took prisoner.

It was the worst atrocity in Europe since World War Two and was judged an act of genocide by two international courts.

Inzko, whose 12 years in office end on 1 August when he will be replaced by Germany's Christian Schmidt, can impose laws and fire officials under the 1995 peace treaty that divided Bosnia into Bosniak-Croat and Serb entities.

Holocaust denial is also a criminal offense in many European countries.

"cruelty-free," ethically sourced "woke coke" has entered the room>

However, Woods sees "woke coke" as a "clever marketing" ploy to help drug cartels recuperate their losses after the COVID pandemic disrupted the supply chain.

"There is no way you can have environmentally friendly cocaine," the narcotics hawk said, "not when the market is unregulated like it is today, so people are paying more for the same product."

"[One] problem with most vacant houses in Baltimore, even if you pay nothing for the house itself, is that the cost of renovating them and bringing them back up to code exceeds their value in the place that they are," says [current comptroller Bill] Henry.
The other problems since revealed are, the city's housing authority (fed HUD, state HUD) grants management and policies to promote speculative investment in rental property instead of "racial equity" in land trust management and home ownership of the "Black Butterfly". Regardless of crisis--COVID, affordability, air and water pollution-- B'more is out to prove time and again, there is no "community association" it cannot corrupt.

Florida Man sues Facebook, Twitter, YouTube for account ban - The Register
A Florida man held a press conference at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, on Wednesday to announce the filing of lawsuits against Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, and corresponding executives Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and Sundar Pichai - who runs YouTube's parent company.

The former political office holder, known among other things for a cancelled reality TV series, a discontinued steak business, a failed casino, and a shuttered business training school, accused the social networks of violating the First Amendment of the US Constitution by closing his accounts and deplatforming him.

Booted from the aforementioned internet services for statements deemed to have encouraged or incited the storming of the US Capitol by tooled-up tourists, the plaintiff is also seeking to have the courts declare Section 230 of America's Communications Decency Act unconstitutional.

Legal scholars were quick to ridicule the complaints. "The First Amendment does not apply to non-governmental actors - full stop," said Steve Vladeck, the Charles Alan Wright Chair in Federal Courts at the University of Texas School of Law.

US warns businesses of heightened risks on China's Xinjiang province
The 36-page "Xinjiang Supply Chain Business Advisory" renews the warning first issued in July 2020 by the Trump administration, declaring that the Chinese government is committing genocide and crimes against humanity against minority religious and ethnic groups in the northeast of the country.

The report warns that the Chinese government's atrocities against the Uyghur population are so extensive, American businesses and individuals are encouraged to exit "supply chains, ventures and/or investments" connected to Xinjiang or risk breaking U.S. law.

To be fair, "The economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic are linked to one of the sharpest increases in hunger in decades" as in Baltimore, USA, where local, volunteer mutual aid compensated for the collapse of state and federal welfare programming. So some Cubans' protesting food shortages might correspond with Joe's revised unalienable "international norms", except that some US Americans posing as freedom-fighting world citizens deem this particular, ahem, lived experience "food apartheid" rather than, say, "monroeism," because Democracy®, possibly anti-racist weed.

When you say you're trying to figure out what's causing them and who is causing them, that suggests that this is someone taking action.
That's certainly a very strong possibility. The National Academy of Sciences, a year ago, in a very extensive report that they did, suggested that the most plausible theory for what caused this was some form of directed energy, and that sort of narrows, then, the number of potential suspects who could have used this, have used it historically and have the reach to do this in more than one part of the world, too. So, yeah, we're very focused on getting to the bottom of this.

Is it Russia?
Could be, but I honestly cannot -- I don't want to suggest until we can draw some more definitive conclusions who it might be. But there are a number of possibilities.

Death toll rises as violence and looting spreads in South Africa
The violence was triggered by the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma as his supporters took to the streets last week, but the situation has evolved into an outpouring of anger over persistent poverty and inequality in South Africa 27 years after the end of apartheid.

The economic effects of COVID-19 restrictions have exacerbated the problems.
[...]
Troops were moving in to flashpoints on Tuesday as outnumbered police seemed helpless to prevent attacks and looting on businesses in Zuma's home province KwaZulu-Natal and in Gauteng province, where the country's biggest city, Johannesburg, is located. Columns of armoured personnel carriers rolled down highways.

Al Jazeera's Fahmida Miller reporting from Johannesburg said looting and rioting continued throughout the night and into the morning.

"These are not demonstrations. One person has been arrested and 11 others are under surveillance for inciting and planning the unrest, she said.
[...]
Police discovered more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition in Durban on Wednesday night, which Minister of Police Bheki Cele said belonged to people who were instigating the violent riots in the province.

The continued violence in KwaZulu-Natal appears well-planned, said South African analyst William Gumede.

"In KwaZulu-Natal, it's well-coordinated, well-funded. If you look at it, strategic commercial hubs were blocked, strategic roads were blocked at really key points. It was very organized," said Gumede, chairman of the Democracy Works Foundation, a group supporting governance in Africa. Zuma, throughout his political career, including his nine years as president, acquired many allies in South Africa's military and security services who were reluctant to respond to the violence in his home province, Gumede said.

China steps up climate fight with emissions trading scheme
The programme was launched just days after the European Union unveiled its detailed plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
< wipes tears > Which has been received by infestors like a bag of frosted hair
China first announced plans for a nationwide carbon market a decade ago, but progress was slowed by the influential coal-industry lobby and policies that prioritised economic growth over the environment.
INCONCEIVABLE
The scheme will set pollution caps for big-power businesses for the first time, and allows firms to buy the right to pollute from others with a lower carbon footprint.
such asssss EU26? Califronia, USA? Or Vanuatu?
Citigroup estimates $800 million worth of credits will be bought for this year, rising to $25 billion by the end of the decade. That would make China's trading scheme about a third the size of Europe's market, currently the biggest in the world.

The scheme was originally expected to be far bigger in scope, covering seven sectors including aviation and petrochemicals.

Low ambition ...
Opening trade at the market in Shanghai started off at 52.7 yuan ($8) per ton of carbon on Friday [16 July] morning.

The average carbon price in China is only expected to hover around $4.60 this year - far below the average EU price of $49.40 per ton, Citic Securities said in a recent research note.

Big Solar: Where do large solar power plants pay off?
Production costs for solar energy have dropped by 90% between 2009 and 2020, according to US investment bank Lazard. In 2020, electricity from large-scale solar plants cost a global average of just $0.037/kWh. For this reason among others, US infestors are throwing money into "carbon-capture pipelines."

Narcissists in Space - Jacobin
What they share is an origin story about private space exploration -- both say their interest stems from a desire to save humanity from planetary collapse. Bezos has been intrigued by the idea of colonizing space since his youth; as a high-school valedictorian he gave a speech about the need for humans to live in space. "Earth had limited resources and so his idea was to get humanity off its surface, into space so as to protect the planet." Musk's story is similar. From a young age, he thought seriously about what he called "an eventual extinction event." "The solution: Find another planet to live on," writes Davenport. Musk's idea was to "make humans a multiplanet species, and create a backup hard drive for the human race there, just in case Earth crashes like a faulty computer."

It is impossible for any reader living through the ravages of global warming to scan these sentiments without skepticism. If someone is going to invest enormous amounts of wealth and time in an engineering project, gathering together some of the smartest scientists on the planet to develop and test creative solutions to an intractable problem, in the interest of saving the future of humanity, how could you choose any focus but climate change?

There remains no legal recognition of same-sex relationships or marriage but as people have become more socially liberal in recent years, those hostile to the LGBTQ community have shifted away from their "traditional values" argument.

A sampling of conversations happening on- and offline makes clear that another viewpoint is gaining traction: a suspicion that the LGBTQ community, especially on college campuses, is the pawn of a so-called "foreign hostile force" that could disrupt Chinese society and therefore needs to be carefully regulated.
