German warship heads for South China Sea amid tension with Beijing
Officials in Berlin have said the German navy will stick to common trade routes. The frigate is not expected to sail through the Taiwan Strait either, another regular U.S. activity condemned by Beijing. Nevertheless, Berlin has made it clear the mission serves to stress the fact Germany does not accept China's territorial claims.

Poland's ruling party rams through media law despite US warnings
The bill proposes only allowing companies majority-owned by entities from the European Economic Area [EC Reg. 2407 "precedent"] to hold broadcast licenses. Love for Italy's `multi-ethnic' Olympic team sparks calls to rethink citizenship law
patria
Around 15 percent of Italy's Olympic team were born abroad or have parents born abroad. On the athletics team, which includes categories like track and field, that figure rises to almost 40 percent.
legio
The diversity of the team has rekindled ongoing discussions in Italy over who is granted citizenship, with Italian Olympic Committee President Giovanni Malagò crediting the "multi-ethnic team" for Italy's success and calling for an acceleration to the citizenship applications of professional athletes.
[...]
As with most European countries, Italy awards citizenship based on jus sanguinis -- the principle that citizenship is determined by the nationality of a person's parents. Jus soli, the principle that the country of citizenship is determined by a person's country of birth, regardless of the citizenship of their parents, is applied in Canada and the United States.
Multās per gentēs et multa per aequora vectus adveniō hās miserās, frāter
Malagò has called for a "sports jus soli" to remove what he calls a "Dante's Inferno" of bureaucratic red tape and give athletes Italian citizenship "one minute after their 18th birthday."

Politico.eu is generally better informed than that: Many European countries, small ones as well as big ones, do practice jus soli <checks Wikipedia>, with some conditions, although Italy doesn't... so far.

It's a cultural change for Italy, which has been, for most of the 19th and 20th century, a country of emigration rather than immigration. Now, Italy has one of the oldest populations in the world, just after Japan, and its population is decreasing: it has slipped under the 60 millions mark, according to some estimates; the fact that Italy is now a place where migrants from the Middle-East and Africa want to settle in still has to fully enter the public consciousness: the Olympics team is bringing this new reality to the fore.

The center-left Democratic Party has vowed to open a debate on the issue in parliament in September. "The Olympics confirmed what we have maintained for some time," the party tweeted, calling citizenship a "right" rather than something to be "earned."

Shortest route to citizenship is either by earning or buying it. Not everyone has a 5000 year birthright as Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. Somehow British Home Office had put conditions on visa renewal.

BTW the Dutch Olympians amassed most gold en silver medals of all EU-27 nations. Recall the Golden Age of the Dutch empire. 🥇😅

UNPRECEDENTED political economy < wipes tears > in the "golden age" of Greek democracy, citizenship, "minority rights," and immigration enforcement. Let's say you read one or more translations of Lysias' notorious, "xenophobic" defense of "unfree" Egyptian metics in Athens, evaluate:

Cold Case Files: The Athenian Grain [a/k/a "corn" of "God"] Merchants 386 B.C.

While most economic analysis of the effects of market power has focused on monopoly power (a single seller of a good) or cartels among sellers, there has always remained some degree of interest in monopsony power (a single buyer) or buying cartels. This interest has traditionally been confined to three different areas: "Company towns" where a single employer is the sole employer of labor; large retailers, such as A & P in the first half of the 20th century, where the retailer's purchases represent a sufficiently large share of the overall market that it has some power to dictate wholesale prices; and middlemen or wholesalers in agricultural markets, such as grain elevator operators, where geography or transportation costs limit the number of potential customers interested in large-scale commercial levels of output. In recent years, there has also been growing concern about the potential for monopsony power among large scale purchasers of health care services.

Pepe Escobar: Afghanistan? Follow the Money
I asked Michael Hudson, an economics professor at the University of Missouri Kansas City and Peking University, how he would recommend the new government to act. He answered, "For one thing, embarrass the hell out of the IMF for acting as an arm of NATO."

Hudson referred to a Wall Street Journal article written by a former IMF advisor now with the Atlantic Council as saying that "now, since recognition is frozen, banks all over the world will hesitate to do business with Kabul. This move provides the U.S. with leverage to negotiate with the Taliban."

< wipes tears >
Hudson is now working on a book about the collapse of antiquity*. His research led him to find Cicero, in "In Favor of [Manilius's Resolution]" (Pro Lege Manilia), writing about Pompeus'[Cnaeus Pompey|Pompei|Pompeius] military campaign in Asia [Minor, a/k/a Anatolia] and its effects on the provinces in a passage that perfectly applies* to the "forever war" in Afghanistan:

"Words cannot express, gentlemen, how bitterly hated we are among foreign nations because of the wanton and outrageous conduct of the men whom in recent years we have sent to govern them. For, in those countries, what temple do you suppose had been held sacred by our officers, what state inviolable, what home sufficiently guarded by its closed doors? Why, they look about for rich and flourishing cities that they may find an occasion for a war against them to satisfy their lust for plunder."

Caius|Gaius Manilus [Cic. Man. 24.69] nominated Pompey--meaning a "bill", proposition or resolution, introduced to senate debate--for commander of the third war against "hellenized" Parthian and "Armenian" enemies of (Alexander's) Seleucid legacy of tin-pot dictators and republican Rome to extinguish the dumpster fire of pillage, piracy, rape, banditry, looting, extortion, casual embezzlement, officious corruption, and rank mutinies fueled by the sundry commanders in the prior 22 years. In this "filibuster," Cicero admires Pompey's management style at the western frontier of the Mediterranean as much as the revenue (possibly "corn") Pompey will restore to Rome's treasury by pacifying enemies and allies alike:"How great should be their moderation in everything! How perfect their good faith! How universal should be their affability! how brilliant their genius! how tender their humanity! And let us briefly consider to what extent these qualities exist in Cnaeus Pompeius. For they are all of the highest importance, O Romans, but yet they are to be seen and ascertained more by comparison with the conduct of others than by any display which they make of themselves."

(*) well, no. European "antiquity" is a renewable paradigm of law'n'orderly tribute.

Meet the Middle Eastern migrants [sic] trapped in Lithuania

Lured to Belarus with promises of easy EU immigration, Iraqis [Operation Iraqi Freedom], Syrians [Operation Inherent Resolve], and Afghans [Operation Enduring Freedom] are now trapped in Lithuania.
opposition to Erdogan: Don't. even. joke about it.
Almost immediately, a security guard approaches us. "What do you want here?" he asks. After all, we -- two journalists originally from the Middle East -- look more like the people inside the refugee camp. Our European companion doesn't though.
[...]
A further fence separates us from the migrants here. Most of them appear to come from the Middle East, although some are also from Africa [Operation Miscellany]. Their clothes look dirty, their faces tired. Almost all are male and most appear to be between 20 and 30 years old.
a split infinitive: Belarus is accused of encouraging migrants to illegally cross the border into the EU.
This year, there have been more than 3,500 people caught at the border, and Lithuanian officials fear that, by the end of the year, they would have seen as many as 15,000 more people from the Middle East and Africa arrive there. In 2020, there were only 81. Belarus has also announced that it will close the borders to its territory, basically trapping migrants in a kind of no-man's-land there.
Lithuania unprepared
Just how sought-after a destination Europe is for some Iraqis can be seen on a Facebook page that was dedicated to migration into the EU via Belarus. In just a few days, tens of thousands had joined the page.

'There Will Be No Democratic System at All' in Afghanistan, Senior Taliban Figure Reportedly Says

Afghanistan under the Taliban will not have a democratic system of government as the latter is understood in many countries, and could be governed by a ruling council ... "There will be no democratic system at all because it does not have any base in our country," Hashimi told Reuters. "We will not discuss what type of poiltical [sic] system we should apply in Afghanistan because it is clear. It is Sharia law and that is it," the official added.
GIVEN an electoral experiment that produce Karzai and Ghani, the NYPost's gallery of medieval savagery, the thin blue line of fatwa enforcers, who would fault that logic?
The official further indicated that the Taliban would discuss the creation of a new national military, with former ["Afghan"] government soldiers and military pilots to be allowed to join. "Of course we will have some changes, to have some reforms in the army, but still we need them and will call them to join us."
modified Ba'ath party purge
Hashimi said that the Taliban has already established contact "with many pilots" in the wake of the group's seizure of dozens of military aircraft, and "asked them to come and join, join their brothers, their government."

In an executive order calling to minimize evictions, Trump directed various federal agencies to make funds available for temporary financial assistance to renters and homeowners facing financial hardship caused by COVID-19.

"It's not their fault that this virus came into our country," he said of renters and homeowners. "It's China's fault."

29 Jul 2021: Biden to allow eviction moratorium to expire Saturday
30 July 2021: Congress fails to extend eviction moratorium, despite last-minute effort

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Whip James Clyburn released a joint statement on the failed bill and blamed Republicans [?!].

"It is extremely disappointing that House and Senate Republicans have refused to work with us on this issue," they wrote in the statement. [...] Earlier in the day,Pelosi pleaded with House Democrats in an email Friday to support the bill that would have directed the Centers for Disease Control to extend the eviction moratorium.

"Congress has the power to direct the CDC to extend the eviction moratorium to provide relief, as we encourage state and local governments to distribute the money that we allocated," she said in the email.

2 Aug 2021: Top House Democrats call on Biden administration to extend eviction moratorium
The eviction moratorium expired at midnight on Saturday after the House left for recess two days earlier, unable to strike a deal on an extension.
wut
The Supreme Court last month ruled that while the CDC's moratorium could stay intact until its expiration date, the agency exceeded its authority when it put the ban in place. Justice Brett Kavanaugh said the ban could not be extended past its expiration date unless by an act of Congress.

The leading Democrats in their statement on Sunday contended that it "will not be sufficient" to extend the moratorium in the House because the Senate would not have the means to approve a bill.

NEW! Census data to show US diversifying at fastest rate EVER
The new figures are almost certain to shine a spotlight on a trend that annual surveys have illustrated over the last several years: The number of white Americans is declining.
[...]
The pace of the decrease is accelerating, too. Between 2016 and 2017, the white population fell by an estimated 129,000 people. From 2019 to 2020, that decline sped up to 482,000.

If trends from annual estimates conducted over the last decade hold, the census data released Thursday is likely to show an America that is, for the first time in the nation's history, less than 60 percent white.
[...]
The number of Hispanic or Latino Americans grew by at least 1 million in eight of the last 10 years, and by 10.5 million between 2010 and 2020. The number of Asian Americans grew by about half a million in seven of the last 10 years, up 4.7 million over the decade. And the number of African Americans grew by at least 300,000 in eight of the last 10 years, or an estimated 3.4 million since the 2010 census.

Brookings priming the pump
Asian Americans were the only demographic group to experience more growth from immigration, 3.3 million people, than from natural increase, 1.2 million.

Those groups, and the attention that activists and party officials now pay to what was once a cartographic [BWAH!] exercise that took place behind closed doors, means this year's redistricting process is likely to be the most transparent in American history [BWAH!]: Voters will be able to witness in real time their legislators remapping their states.

Voters ask federal court to intervene in Wisconsin redistricting
Wasting no time after the release of the 2020 [synthetic] census data on Thursday, a complaint from six Wisconsin voters filed in Madison federal court renews the charge that the state's current maps are illegally gerrymandered [?!] and makes clear the plaintiffs have no confidence in the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature and Democratic Governor Tony Evers to reach a consensus on new maps that are fair and constitutional.
Does this We The People Act stipulate a formula for district assignment? NO. Does it modify the Apportionment Act of '29? NO. But it does purport to simplify voter registration, demand declarations of the financial positions from each presidential nominee for executive offices, subsidize voter donations to uniparty candidates, create NEW! financial barriers to entry by "third-party" candidates for federal seats, AND endorse voter membership in each election commission appointed by a state's governor and legislators.
Calling the current maps "unconstitutionally malapportioned," the voters are asking the court to assemble a three-judge panel to declare the current district plans unconstitutional, block their use for any future elections and draw new maps that ensure a one-person, one-vote standard, something that is normally the Legislature's job.
Dueling Commissions Foreshadow Partisan Battle Over Redistricting
Gov. Lawrence "Maglev" Hogan Jr. (R) created the Maryland Citizens Redistricting Commission earlier this year to draw  legislative and congressional maps that he will propose as a bill to the General Assembly.

That commission -- which consists of three Republicans, three Democrats and three unaffiliated voters -- finished its initial round of public hearings in July ahead of the release Thursday of detailed U.S. Census data used for redistricting.
[...]
Constitutionally, Hogan cannot veto the General Assembly's legislative maps, but his proposed maps become law if the General Assembly doesn't pick an alternative within the first half of the 2022 legislative session [full regular session, 1 Jan-31 March.

Maglev'e predessor
"Part of my intent was to create a map that, all things being legal and equal, would, nonetheless, be more likely to elect more Democrats rather than less," [Martin] O'Malley said in a deposition as part of that case.
[...]
Political analysts believe that a shift to single-member districts statewide would lead to Republican gains in the General Assembly, this publication previously reported, and Republican lawmakers who testified at the first round of Maryland Citizens Redistricting Commission public hearings overwhelmingly supported single-member districts.

But support for single-member districts doesn't come only from Republicans: Comptroller and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Peter V.R. Franchot endorsed the system in 2019.

House Democrats [re]introduce John Lewis voting rights bill

Specifically, the federal preclearance outlined in Sections 4 and 5 of the bill has been cut down by the Supreme Court. It required states and jurisdictions with histories of racial discrimination -- largely the Jim Crow South --

to gain approval from the Department of Justice before implementing any change to voting procedure.

In 2013, the Supreme Court ruled in the landmark case Shelby County v. Holder that the formula that created the preclearance threshold was outdated and therefore unconstitutional.
Chief Justice John Roberts made it clear at the time, though, that Congress had the authority to update the formula.

[Eric "Ima Freeman!"] Sewell explained that the revised formula now takes into account only the past 25 [calendar] years of voting misconduct from states and localities.

Unsurprisingly, the Great Replacement theory is alive and well in the American right. White supremacists were chanting 'Jews will not replace us' in Charlottesville, SC, four years ago.

The Racist `Theory' That Inspired Murderers Is Now GOP Dogma

The hoods are off, and Republicans are embracing the white supremacist "replacement theory."

If you're dismissing this as fear-mongering or click-bait, you probably missed Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House and renowned adulterer, espousing replacement theory rhetoric on Fox News earlier this week while talking to host Maria Baritromo, who always has time to offer a platform to dangerous conspiracy peddling. Speaking about Mexican immigrants coming to America during the pandemic, Gingrich said the "radical left" wants to "get rid of the rest of us" and would "love to drown traditional, classic Americans with as many people as they can who know nothing of American history, nothing of American tradition, nothing of the rule of law."

He wasn't talking about Donald Trump, notorious for being historically ignorant and profoundly incurious, but about those of us with darker skin, who are never seen as "traditional" or "classic" or "real Americans." Gingrich, a craven political opportunist, parroted the talking points associated with "the great replacement" theory, also known as "white genocide," which stipulates the white race and "Western civilization" are in dire threat of being weakened and ultimately usurped by immigrants of color, Muslims, feminists, and gays.

The legions, which had been a mix of life professionals and civilian campaigners, was altered into a standing army of professionals only.[70] The actual structure of the cohort army remained much the same as in the late Republic, although around the 1st century AD the first cohort of each legion was increased in size to a total of 800 soldiers.[71][72] However, while the structure of the legions remained much the same, their make-up gradually changed. Whereas early Republican legions had been raised by a draft from eligible Roman citizens, imperial legions were recruited solely on a voluntary basis and from a much wider base of manpower. Likewise, whereas Republican legions had been recruited almost exclusively in Italy, early Imperial legions drew most of their recruits from Roman colonies in the provinces from 68 AD onwards. One estimate places the proportion of Italian troops at 65% under Augustus in c. 1 AD, falling to around 49% by the end of Nero's reign.[73]

NEW! ACS debuts as an attempt to quantify disproportionately IMPACTED essential workers by intersectional gender and sexual orientation characteristics
Census data [sic] shows LGBT Americans hit harder by economic, food insecurity amid pandemic
The findings came in the latest Household Pulse Survey, which the Census Bureau first launched in April 2020 to measure U.S. household experiences during the pandemic.
Gah bless Wilbur Ross
The data, which was collected from July 21 to Aug. 2, found that nearly 20 percent of LGBT adults reported a loss of income in the previous four weeks, compared to about 17 percent of non-LGBT adults [any race or ethnicity, age, or US residency status]. This week's report survey is the first to include data questions on gender identity and sexual orientation.
possibly "women and minorities"
The latest data, which came from survey responses from a total of more than 64,000 U.S. households, suggests that the coronavirus pandemic may be exacerbating the financial challenges among LGBT Americans, who even before COVID-19 hit had already been more likely to experience greater financial hardship than non-LGBT people.
[...]
The pandemic has also exacerbated existing financial disparities among several other groups, including Latinas, who left the workforce at a higher rate than any other demographic group [?] during the pandemic, according to research released in June by the University of California-Los Angeles's Latino Policy and Politics Initiative.

Additionally, the study found that Hispanic and Black women saw unemployment rates almost double what white women experienced by the end of 2020.

[Mostly Democratic Party] Illinois lawmakers set to vote on new election maps
This ["]census cycle["], Illinois was apportioned 17 seats in Congress, losing one seat from the 2010 apportionment. The change reflects the state's overall population decline over the past decade, and means that one congressional district must go.

That's bad news for Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger, whose ["]fiefdom["] is the state's politically divided, central 16th Congressional District.

FACTS! and NEW! cause of action: "Equal Protection Malapportionment"
The Illinois General Assembly "finished" redrawing all state Senate, House and appellate court districts in late May [2020], with the changes signed into law by Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker in early June [2020]. However, these maps were based on 2015-2019 estimates made by the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey, not the full ["synthetic"] 2020 census.
You must be new here.
"... Five-year ACS estimates are not current for purposes of determining whether districts comply with the 14th Amendment one-person, one-vote standard," according to the lawsuit brought by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
This case arises under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 and the Fourteenth Amendment, Section 1, to the Constitution of the United States, which provides in pertinent part: ... The Equal Protection Clause requires that the representative and legislative districts used to elect members of the General Assembly be substantially equal in population [BWAH!].
Sure enough, the full 2020 census results released on Aug. 12 showed substantial population differences from the preliminary estimates. To address this, last week Illinois House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch and Illinois Senate President Don Harmon, both Democrats, announced a special Aug. 31 [legislative] session to vote on new district maps.
We're good to go!

Homeless encampment grows on Apple property in Silicon Valley
Apple promised to help quell the Bay Area's homelessness crisis with a series of big-ticket investments, but the tech giant soon may have to get more directly involved -- addressing a problem that has spread to the company's front door.

A large homeless encampment is growing on the site Apple earmarked for its North San Jose campus, two years after Apple made waves with a $2.5 billion pledge to combat the Bay Area's affordable housing and homelessness crisis.

What started as a few RVs parked on the side of Component Drive has grown over the past year into a sprawling camp of dozens of people, a maze of broken-down vehicles and a massive amount of trash scattered across the vacant, Apple-owned property. People with nowhere else to go live there in tents, RVs and wooden structures they built themselves. At least two children call the camp home.

Palo Alto: RV dwellers parked on El Camino Real receive notices to move or be towed
PALO ALTO -- Several RV dwellers in Palo Alto parked on El Camino Real have received notices from the police department warning they could be towed as early as Wednesday if they do not move their vehicles.

The notices incensed local activists, who expressed their discontent to the City Council on Monday night.

Angie Evans, a member of the Palo Alto Renters Association, asked the council to order a stop to the tow warnings and show support for the dozens of people currently living in RVs and vehicles in the city.

A line of RVs and other vehicles parked along El Camino Real is hard to miss against the backdrop of Stanford University. For the past several months, people living along the busy avenue have had to play "musical parking spaces," as they call it, moving from one spot on El Camino Real to another a few blocks away when they get a tow notice

Despite the many stories about all the people leaving big cities, there is another huge factor--at least in the US. Healthcare.

If you live in a city, there is a choice of where you might get advanced care. But if you move out into the boondocks, not so much. Many smaller towns have no hospital at all, or only a small ER clinic, or a pharmacist who gives out pills. Rural hospitals are closing all over the country.

Why would someone voluntarily choose to live in a place where it is a two hour ambulance ride to a Level 1 hospital?

For 98% of needed services a Nurse Practitioner or Physicians Assistant .... or even a Paramedic ... is fine.  For the 2% that's not the patient would have to be transported anyway since rural hospitals cannot afford to have a cardiologist, otolaryngologist, surgeon, & etc. with the associated equipment, nurses, and infrastructure sitting around for the tiny amount of time they'd be used.

Rural counties of the US are de-populating.  As the numbers fall the people who provide services fall, and so the available services must also fall.  Just the way it is.

Other politicians' scandals PROPELLED career of NY's next governor, ex-Rep. Kathy Hochul

Hochul ran as a moderate, "independent" Democrat in 2011, attacking Republican plans to turn Medicare into a voucher system. She won 48 percent of the vote in what was arguably New York's most conservative district, thanks in part to Republicans splitting their vote between an establishment candidate and an upstart from the tea party.

Despite an endorsement from the National Rifle Association, Hochul narrowly lost her reelection bid 51 to 49 percent in 2012.

During her time in Congress, she occasionally voted with Republicans to reduce regulations and supported a balanced budget amendment but otherwise stuck to ["]mostly liberal["] positions. While Erie County clerk, she opposed SPITZER's proposal to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants -- a position she later abandoned as lieutenant governor. Hochul maintained that "No one who is named as doing anything unethical in the report will remain in my administration" and that "At the end of my term, whenever it ends, no one will ever describe my administration as a toxic work environment."

Still, she stopped short of commenting on the state Assembly's impeachment hearing, saying she would leave the decision of whether to continue the process to the Judiciary Committee's lawmakers.

"I was not aware of any of the allegations whatsoever in the report. The report stands on its own," she said.

Burkina Faso rejoices as triple jumper Zango delivers first ever medal
OUAGADOUGOU, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Burkina Faso triple jumper Hugues Fabrice Zango's disappointing first two jumps in the final in Tokyo left his family watching live at home in Ouagadougou stressed and fearful that he could miss out on a medal - his country's first ever at the Olympics.

Urging him on from their sofa, Zango's father, brother and sisters erupted in joy when he leapt 17.47m on his third run, propelling him briefly into second place behind Portugal's Pedro Pichardo.

Zango eventually finished third behind Pichardo and China's Zhu Yaming, who jumped a personal best of 17.57m to claim the silver medal.

"We were really very scared. After the first two tries we were really intensely stressed, we really didn't know how things were going to go," said Zango's brother Alex Cedric.

Zango won his bronze medal, the first for the West African nation since it began participating in the Olympics in 1972, on Burkina Faso's Independence Day.

Taliban fighters told to wait at gates of Kabul: spokesman
AFP

Taliban fighters were ordered Sunday to wait at the gates of Kabul and not enter the city, an insurgent spokesman said, after the complete collapse of the country's security forces.

"The Islamic Emirate instructs all its forces to stand at the gates of Kabul, not to try to enter the city," a spokesman for the Taliban tweeted, although some residents reported insurgents had peacefully entered some outer suburbs.

Zebulon Simantov, Afghanistan's last Jew, has not left Kabul, despite the best efforts of some Jewish figures and organizations.

One of them was Moshe Margaraten, a haredi Orthodox fixer whose passion is bringing Jews out of danger.

Margareten paid Moti Kahana, an Israeli-American businessman who helped extract people from war-torn Syria, to be a middleman and get Simantov out -- but Kahana told Margareten what many others had heard: Simantov was not leaving because of his longstanding refusal to grant his Israeli wife a "get," or decree of divorce. Simantov feared facing Israel's legal system, which penalizes such a refusal.

Editorial | Confiscating Solar Panels From Palestinians in August Is Abuse
The unit that coordinates government activities in the occupied territories, in its response to Haaretz, chose to ignore the question of what the connection is between confiscating the solar panels and the destruction of antiquities. There is none. The result: the family of the farmer Salim Abu Tayeb - mother, father, grandmother and two small children, were condemned to live without electricity.

Toxic invasive [?!] poison hemlock is spreading into US parks and backyard gardens
Poison hemlock, which resembles Queen Anne's Lace, can be spotted in highway right-of-ways, along fences and on the edges of farm fields. In just the last year, however, the plant that was originally brought to the U.S. FROM EUROPE ["a garden plant, desired for its delicate white flowers"] has MIGRATED near more populated areas, which has experts concerned.
not yer grandma's Sumac
Hemlock poisoning can be fatal with no antidote. All plant parts contain toxic alkaloids that can interfere with nerve [CNS!] transmissions to your muscles, ultimately causing respiratory failure [ARDS!].
"inauthentic" behavior and identities
Poison hemlock is part of the parsley and carrot family. Its leaves are easy to confuse with parsley. Its seeds look similar to those of anise and its roots resemble parsnip roots.

This mistaken identity is the main way people are exposed or accidentally poisoned. But there are ways to distinguish poison hemlock that are unique only to it. Like most invasive species, poison hemlock has been around for a long time, but in small enough populations that no one really noticed. ... With the right wet and cool conditions and a built-up seed bank, the population can proliferate and explode -- past the point where it can be eliminated.

SEE something, SAY something.
If you spot poison hemlock in a public park or along a road side, Shaver recommends reaching out to the agency in charge of that property to let them know about the plant.

Gulf of Mexico dead zone larger than ["]normal["], NOAA says
The agency said in a Tuesday report that for the past five years, the average hypoxic zone, or area with little to no oxygen where marine life easily dies, has been 5,380 square miles.

In 2021, this area is about 6,334 square miles, about 2.8 times larger than the 2035 target set by the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force, better known as the Hypoxia Task Force.

The area is also larger than the 4,880 square miles NOAA had predicted in June based on Mississippi River discharge and nutrient runoff data from the U.S. Geological Survey.
[...]
"By understanding the scale and effects of these hypoxia events, we can better inform the best strategies to reduce its size and minimize impacts to our coastal resources and economy!" she added.

Europe is burning: Four DW explanations
Wildfires burning across southern Europe in the last month -- whether sparked naturally by lightning, or by arsonists -- have been fanned by drought and extreme heat.
PIGS + FR
This is why at least 55% more area has burned across Europe by August 5 than the average over the previous 12 years. This fact is compounded by outdated forest management, and sometimes even the over-protection of natural forests.
"central and northern regions that are not typically fire-prone"
"An expansion of fire-prone areas and longer fire seasons are projected in most European regions," stated the EEA.

Carbon emissions are not decreasing fast enough to limit this heating, despite climate agreements such as the European Green Deal and Paris Climate Accord.

"They put out plans, they define goals, but they don't really act," said Mojib Latif, a climate scientist at the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research. "Since 1990, global carbon emissions increased 60%," he told DW, adding that emissions will rise again in 2021 following the pandemic-related slowdown the previous year.

Thousands of emergency services staff have battled the fires since Monday, while 12,000 locals and tourists spent Wednesday and Thursday night in emergency shelters in the Var department. Forest fires in the Var département are a regular feature, especially from mid-August on (and then flooding during the September-October fall season). The Var has both a high population (lot of housing), lot of forest and a lot of tourists during the summer vacations.

Some of the burned areas had already burned down in the 1970s or 1980s, grown the forest (and bushes) back up, then, ready to burn again... It's a regular feature that is made more intense by climate changes and, due to the population increase (556,000 in 1968, 1.2 millions today), has put more people in harm's way.

TBH, Southern France has been spared the worst so far this summer: a cool air mass has been staying over Western Europe during most of July and early August, pushing the hot air from Sahara towards the Eastern part of the continent, to devastating effects in Turkey and Greece.

Tonight, the fire is still going strong and pushed Eastward by the Mistral wind to the peninsula of Ramatuelle ans St Tropez.

Spanish cave art created by Neanderthals, study finds
Who first conceived of art, or symbolic expression -- Neanderthals or humans -- remains a matter of debate because "art was supposed to be a hallmark of so-called modern humans, and Neandertals were assumed to have been incapable of doing any," said João Zilhão, research professor at the University of Barcelona.

The red pigments researchers studied, located in a stalagmitic dome in the cave's lower ["]gallery["], were analyzed and found to have been intentionally applied through splattering and blowing rather than by natural processes.

It also supports the idea that cave structures like stalagmites played a fundamental role in the symbolic systems of some Neanderthal communities, something that can be interpreted as part of a longstanding tradition.

Herodotus rising
According to the researchers, the woman was a descendant of ["]mainly East Asian Homo sapiens["] who most likely arrived at the tropical outpost at least 50,000 years ago. She was probably 17 or 18 years old when she died. The Indonesian archaeologists who unearthed the skeleton nicknamed the remains 'Besse'. The team reported their finding in the journal Nature that came out on Wednesday.
scientific racism
"The Sulawesi woman's DNA indicates that interbreeding [!] occurred in Wallacea as some Stone Age H. sapiens made their way toward Papua New Guinea and Australia. The major gene flow from Denisovans into ancestors of Papuans and Aboriginal Australians most likely took place once [H. sapiens] reached the Wallacea islands," Cosimo Posth, a population geneticist and the study's co-author, said.

The scientists also said that the woman's DNA resembles that of present-day Papuans and indigenous Australians more closely than any modern mainland East Asians. It indicates that she belonged to a previously unknown, distinct genetic line of humans that emerged around 37,000 years ago. It is estimated that around the same period, the evolutionary split [!] occurred between Papuans and indigenous Australians.

INOVIO and Advaccine Receive Regulatory Allowance for Two Heterologous Prime-Boost Clinical Trials in China Using INO-4800, INOVIO's COVID-19 DNA [!] Vaccine Candidate
the company's vaccine could serve as "a primary and a booster vaccine due to its tolerability, balanced cross-reactive immune responses, and strong thermostability profile that does not require cold or ultra-cold-chain transport."

According to IEEE Spectrum, Inovio's vaccine is delivered in a unique way: because traditional injection proved to have only limited effect, a special electroporation device delivers a small electric shock upon injection, which also uses a shorter needle. The minute shock opens channels into the recipient's cells temporarily, allowing the vaccine to be delivered.

1,000-year-old grave may belong to nonbinary leader, challenging centuries-old gender roles
In a peer-reviewed study in the European Journal of Archaeology, researchers analyzed DNA of the remains found in an iron grave at Suontaka Vesitorninmäki in Hattula, Finland.
There is an enduring fascination with women buried with weapons, but the topic continues to be debated (e.g. Androshchuk, 2018; Price et al., 2019). A specific Finnish find, an early medieval inhumation grave dated to (ad 1050-1300)1 found at Suontaka Vesitorninmäki in the municipality of Hattula (formerly Tyrväntö) (Figure 1), has often been interpreted as a woman buried with two swords. The interpretation is based on dress accessories and jewellery, which suggest that the individual was dressed in feminine clothes. For decades, the grave has been a popular example of powerful women in Late Iron Age and early medieval societies (Lehtosalo-Hilander, 1983: 304, 402-03; Ojanen, 2002: 47; Huurre, 2009: 213).
More recent DNA testing confirmed the grave only held one person who had Klinefelter syndrome. Genetically, females have two X chromosomes while males have one X and one Y. Klinefelter syndrome results when a male is born with an extra copy of the X chromosome. The syndrome sometimes results in males developing ENLARGED BREASTS, infertility and other symptoms.
Now, "we" are free to extrapolate "empowerment," possibly class rank.

"Habituality" has entered the room.

In a perspective piece published Thursday in the journal Science, experts Ryuki Hyodo and Tomohiro Usui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency say space missions happening this decade may give researchers their clearest picture yet on the status of past or present life on the Red Planet.

Researchers are particularly interested in the planned Mars Sample Return mission put together by NASA and the European Space Agency that is primed to explore the planet's Jezero Crater, a site believed to be the relic of a great ancient lake. Experts say rovers will collect samples from the crater that, once studied, could help scientists better understand how habituality on the Red Planet has changed so drastically over [billions of] years.

Beirut explosion
On 4 August 2020, a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the port of the city of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, exploded, causing at least 218 deaths, 7,500 injuries, and US$15 billion in property damage, and leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless. A cargo of 2,750 tonnes of the substance (equivalent to around 1.1 kilotons of TNT) had been stored in a warehouse without proper safety measures for the previous six years, after having been confiscated by the Lebanese authorities from the abandoned ship MV Rhosus.[1] The explosion was preceded by a fire in the same warehouse, but as of April 2021, the exact cause of the detonation is still under investigation.

The blast was also felt across Turkey, Syria, Israel, Palestine, parts of Europe, and was heard in Cyprus, more than 240 km (150 mi) away. It was detected by the United States Geological Survey as a seismic event of magnitude 3.3, and is considered one of the most powerful artificial non-nuclear explosions in history.
