First Crack In AUS-US Foreign Policy

A Profile of Courage

The Guardian first reported a change to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website to remove language describing west Jerusalem as the capital on Monday.

Wong said the decision was made by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's Cabinet earlier today.

First bit of good news from Middle-East in a very, very long time.

Labor reverses decision to recognise West Jerusalem as Israel capital | ABC News Australia |

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Tuesday morning that the government would reverse the former Coalition government's decision to recognise West Jerusalem, calling it a "cynical" ploy to win electoral support.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had already deleted references to the Morrison Government's decision online, although Cabinet only made a formal decision on the issue on Tuesday morning.

Several media outlets reported on the change on Monday night, forcing the federal government to clarify that no decision had yet been made.

The Prime Minister of Israel, Yair Lapid, criticised the move in a statement issued today.

"In light of the way in which this decision was made, as a hasty response to an incorrect report in the media, we can only hope that the Australian government manages other matters more seriously and professionally," he said.
"Jerusalem is the eternal and united capital of Israel and nothing will ever change that.

Senator Wong, speaking after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, said Australia remained a steadfast friend of Israel, and an unwavering supporter of the Palestinian people.

"Today, the government has reaffirmed Australia's previous and long-standing position that Jerusalem is a final status issue, a final status issue that should be resolved as part of any peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian people," she said.

"Australia's embassy has always been, and remains, in Tel Aviv."

Flaunting International Law for over half a century, disregard of decisions ICJ and UNSC Resolutions. Occupying and stealing Palestinian land to expand "foreign" settlements on the West Bank. The scourge of removing Palestinian families from their East-Jerusalem homes.

Joe Biden failed to halt or reverse the foolhardy policy by Donald Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Instead Joe and FM Antony joined in the celebrations.

The bullying and bribing of the Kingdom of Morocco to back the Abraham Accords aggravated the breach of the UN Charter and International law. The European Union for self-interest kept silent and allowed Spain to conclude deal over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.

Former Chinese president Hu Jintao escorted out of party congress as Xi Jinping looks on | ABC News AU |

Search results for "Hu Jintao" on the Twitter-like Weibo platform appeared to be heavily censored Saturday afternoon, with the most recent result dated Friday and posts limited to those of official accounts.

Xi is all but assured of being formally announced on Sunday as the party's general secretary for another five years.

This will allow Xi to sail through to a third term as China's president, due to be announced during the government's annual legislative sessions in March.

Since taking over from Hu a decade ago, Xi has become China's most authoritarian leader since Mao Zedong

Xi has crushed opposition to his rule inside the party, with many of his rivals jailed on corruption charges, and he has shown no tolerance for any form of public dissent.

Also, has any Australian reporter actually reviewed the 20th Congress agenda, of which delegates' election of a new standing committee the Political Bureau?

DWsplainin | China's frail ex-president Hu removed from Party Congress, 22 Oct "tragedy"
Why could he have been asked to leave?

Hu, who handed over the office of party general secretary to Xi a decade ago after two terms, was said to have reservations about the current Chinese president's ambitions.

Hu stands for the old "collective" leadership model that believes China should be run by representatives from different factions with age and term limits, which Xi wants to override with a third term.

Stealth intervention talk permeates market as yen approaches ¥150 | Japan Times - Oct. 19, 2022 |

The yen carried on its seemingly inevitable decline toward ¥150 per dollar, as traders scoured intraday moves for evidence of subtle intervention from Japan.

Twice in under a week investors have seen sudden bursts of yen strength as it edged to fresh lows, spurring speculation that officials are subtly intervening to support the currency. The yen traded around the ¥149.30 level Wednesday, after weakening to ¥149.38 on Tuesday in a volatile session which included such a spike.

"The move seems to have been driven off of electronic flows rather than `voice' driven flows which points to `stealth' intervention," Brad Bechtel, global head of foreign exchange at Jefferies, wrote in an Tuesday note. "Maybe they are warming up to defend ¥150.00 as the next big psychological level above."

Market-watchers expect Japan to focus on the pace of the yen's decline rather than any particular number. But ¥150 is seen as an important psychological level in Japan and a break may increase pressure on authorities for further action.

The yen has tumbled about 23% against the greenback this year thanks to a yawning monetary policy differential between the United States and Japan. The currency has wiped out last month's intervention-driven gains despite a $19.5 billion spend and a barrage of warnings from authorities trying to dissuade traders from testing their resolve.
