Shortly before the 2020 election, Donald Trump's national security adviser, Robert O'Brien, "stunned" the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff by saying the president wanted to kill a senior Iranian military officer operating outside the Islamic Republic.

"This was a really bad idea with very big consequences," Mark Esper, Trump's second and last secretary of defense, writes in his new memoir, adding that Gen Mark Milley suspected O'Brien saw the strike purely in terms of Trump's political interests.

Throughout the memoir, Esper presents himself as one of a group of aides who resisted bad or illegal ideas proposed by Trump or subordinates - such as the proposed strike on the Iranian officer.

Among other such ideas that were discussed, Esper says, were sending "missiles into Mexico to destroy the drug labs"; sending 250,000 troops to the southern border; and dipping the decapitated head of a terrorist leader in pig's blood as a warning to other Islamist militants.

Trump made belligerence towards Tehran an important part of his administration and platform for re-election, pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal and regularly warning in bombastic terms of the cost of conflict with the US.

He also ordered a drone strike on a top Iranian general blamed for attacks on US targets. In January 2020, Qassem Suleimani, the head of the elite Quds force, was killed in Baghdad.

Shireen: Voice of the voiceless victims silenced

I am not ready to speak about Shireen in the past tense. Not today. Perhaps not ever.
Shireen has covered the cruelty of the Israeli occupation for decades, only to be the victim of its utter bloody madness; madness she spent a lifetime exposing.

Ms Abu Akleh is a household name in the Arab world. Faraway but omnipresent in countless homes from Rabat to Riyadh.

A seasoned journalist, she has been that brave voice from Palestine echoing through the world. Where seasonal reporters come and go, she has been there day in day out, year after year, face to face with the occupiers of her homeland, giving a voice to voiceless Palestinians.

Shireen has had that steady voice - a soothing, credible voice. Always calm, cool and collected even when faced with the most horrific circumstances and bloodiest scenes.

There is something modest but magical about the way she has strolled down the streets of Palestine and gone through the alleys of its refugee camps, talking to the world with such eloquence; such clarity and confidence.

Always factual and objective. And yes, always measured. Never losing her nerves.

Astounding

A war journalist, she nonetheless has a charitable aura about her. Incredibly humane in the midst of an inhumane setting. She is a passionate reporter, where her passion reflects an enviable mélange of love and pain for her suffering homeland.

UPDATE: I published a link to this post on my Facebook timeline. Normally, it would display the headline and preview of the featured image. In this case, it's the picture of Shireen's funeral displayed here. But I got an error message from Buffer, my social media publisher, which I display here. Apparently, pro-Israel trolls have mass reported this image as "abusive." And Facebook, in its infinite wisdom has agreed. So the space where the preview image should display is blank. No message from Facebook explaining this.  So I can't appeal the decision. Imagine trolls with the chutzpah to report an image of a murdered woman's funeral as abusive. Is it any more abusive than her murder itself??

To give you an idea of how arbitrary and uncoordinated the censorship is, I uploaded the same funeral image as my Facebook banner image and it's doing just fine there.
