UK Heading Towards A Recession

UK economic growth slows, raising recession concerns

The figures "suggest the economy had less momentum than we thought even before the full hit from the cost of living crisis has been felt," said Paul Dales, chief U.K. economist at Capital Economics. "The risk of recession has just risen."

Growth is slowing as manufacturers and retailers struggle to overcome supply bottlenecks following the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine fuels rising food and energy prices. Retail sales figures show British consumers are already reducing spending as economists forecast the U.K. will see the biggest drop in living standards in more than six decades this year.

Thursday's figures underscore how the U.K.'s recovery from the pandemic has slowed over the past year.

UK economy 'only going to get worse' as growth slowdown begins | CNBC |

Sterling hit a two-year low versus the U.S. dollar following the data as traders digested growing uncertainty about the U.K.'s economic outlook.

The surprise monthly contraction in March -- economists had expected the figure to come in flat -- presents a worry for Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government as the country's cost-of-living crisis is yet to reach its peak.

"Ultimately, things are only going to get worse for consumers. Energy bills are expected to soar again later this year when the price cap is reassessed, while inflation is proving stickier than expected," said Hinesh Patel, portfolio manager at Quilter Investors.

U.K inflation hit a 30-year high of 7% in March and in April, the country's energy regulator increased its price cap by 54% [modest increase compared to other nations with no price cap and energy cost more than doubled] to accommodate soaring prices. In the Queen's Speech to mark the state opening of parliament on Wednesday, the government promised to focus on economic growth in order to address the spiraling cost of living..

Boris hasn't found his "Falklands war victory" moment yet. He keeps trying to provoke one over NI or pretend he is the saviour of Ukraine, but no one is buying it. The sunny uplands of Brexit have become a bit clouded with other issues - such as the biggest fall in living standards in 60 years - but that's mainly a problem for the little people.

The parallel with Putin is striking. He's so badly beaten that he's desperate to find a victory to declare.
UK public opinion seems slower than that of Russia in realising that the emperor has no clothes... two years on, and still a large plurality of opinion who find that Boris is doing a good job sticking it to the continentals.

Except for the 177,410 who have officially died of Covid which is a vast understatement because the UK initially didn't count deaths outside hospitals at all, and even now don't count deaths as covid related unless there was a very recent positive PCR test. The death count where Covid is explicitly mentioned on the death cert is c. one third higher and deaths where Covid isn't deemed to be the primary or immediate cause aren't counted at all. In Ireland, in contrast, any death in any context where Covid is a suspected contributory cause is counted.

Given that the United Kingdom shares historical, cultural, and geopolitical ties with the Nordic countries, the UK would benefit from having all Nordic countries within NATO. As relatively small countries, the Nordics would certainly benefit from the UK's support, especially related to logistics, intelligence sharing, and the security provided by the nuclear umbrella. If combined with the UK's capabilities and focus, this unified North would outrank any other European force structure and would help secure both the Eastern and Northern Flank of NATO.

Five forgotten Viking battles that shaped Britain's destiny

The Viking age lasted for almost three centuries: from the end of the eighth until deep into the 11th. Over this period, in England alone, sources document at least 50 pitched battles, plus as many raids, sieges and naval encounters. Most of these have been all but forgotten over the centuries.

Many of them, however, played a critical role in shaping the nascent kingdoms of England and Scotland. Here, then, are five battles of the Viking age: clashes that - though uncelebrated and often unremembered - helped to shape the destiny of Britain.

Neoliberalism has led to the vilification of the public provision of public services

The concept of the public provision of public services has been successfully vilified by rightwing propaganda as a form of toxic "hard left" ideology, when in fact it is simply the right moral and social way to proceed, and was until the 1980s recognised as such by all political parties left and right. There are many areas of national life where needs are so basic, universal and socially important that the services should be provided and managed collectively, democratically and explicitly in the interests of the public, not privately and in the interest of profit.

The real toxic and irrational ideology is that of neoliberalism that has so permeated the zeitgeist that its pernicious attacks on the public realm are now the accepted currency of political discourse preventing the reclaiming of public services.

The creation of a market in children's social care was a terrible mistake

Tom Tugendhat has emerged as the clear winner of the first live televised debate in the Tory leadership race, according to snap polling which placed him significantly ahead of frontrunner Rishi Sunak.

The five candidates went head-to-head on Channel 4 on Friday evening, with Mr Tugendhat having only narrowly survived the second ballot the previous day, receiving the votes of just five more Tory MPs than attorney.

English villages wake up to find they're Brexit's new border | ABC News - Oct. 12, 2020 |

In the corner of Britain known as the Garden of England, Brexit is literally taking concrete form

Four years after Britain voted to leave the European Union, Brexit can still seem abstract. But in the county known as the Garden of England, it is literally taking concrete form.

Just beyond the ancient oaks and yews that surround medieval St. Mary's Church in the village of Sevington, bulldozers, dump trucks and cement mixers swarm noisily over a field. They are chewing up land to create part of Britain's new border with the European Union -- a customs clearance depot with room for up to 2,000 trucks.

No one asked local people for permission, and even in this Brexit-backing area, the disruption is straining support for the U.K.'s rupture with the EU.

"The first anyone knew about it was when a sign went up saying the footpaths had been closed," said Sharon Swandale, whose home in the village of Mersham used to be a 20-minute walk from Sevington. Closure of the path for construction work means it's now an almost 4-mile (6.4-kilometer) drive.

This county, Kent, voted by 60%-40% to leave the EU in Britain's 2016 referendum, but Swandale said visions of truck stops and customs depots were not uppermost in their minds.

"Fixing" the N. Ireland Protocol

There are three reasons why Northern Ireland has not rated many mentions in the Conservative leadership contest so far.

  • the standoff with the European Union over the Brexit Northern Ireland protocol is currently dwarfed by the severity of the energy price crisis.

  • most Tory party members, who are overwhelmingly English, are not interested in Northern Ireland.

  • Rishi Sunak does not want to let Liz Truss turn the issue into a test of Brexit zealotry that she would win.

Britannia Unchained: the free-market book that defines Boris Johnson's new cabinet

The floor of Boris Johnson's car - recently captured by an enterprising photographer - contains little of note: water bottles, empty coffee cups and receipts are strewn across the Toyota Previa. But among such banal paraphernalia lies a copy of Britannia Unchained, a free-market tract co-authored in 2012 by five recently-elected Conservative MPs: Kwasi Kwarteng, Priti Patel, Dominic Raab, Chris Skidmore and Liz Truss.

The 152-page book excoriated the UK's "bloated state, high taxes and excessive regulation" and, most memorably, derided British workers as "among the worst idlers in the world" ("We work among the lowest hours, we retire early and our productivity is poor. Whereas Indian children aspire to be doctors or businessmen, the British are more interested in football and pop music.") The UK, it declared, should "stop indulging in irrelevant debates about sharing the pie between manufacturing and services, the north and the south, women and men".
