Ukraine Conflict 2014-2022

by Oui Fri May 27th, 2022 at 02:14:22 PM EST

A diplomatic solution is not on the horizon, the impasse from before Feb. 24 has grown immensely. So is the territory Russia will claim as the Ukrainian pain and suffering doesn't seem to end.

Johnson admits Russia making `palpable' progress

Poland Will Keep Fighting Until Total Victory

Polish President Andrzej Duda visits Ukraine | JPost |

The Polish president has delivered a message of strong support for Ukraine during the first address in person by a foreign leader to the parliament in Kyiv since the Russian invasion began.

During his speech Andrzej Duda thanked Ukraine for defending Europe against what he called "Russian imperialism".

"The free world", he said, "has the face of Ukraine". Duda said recent calls for Kyiv to negotiate with President Putin, and even give into some of his demands, were disturbing. No decisions about your future will be made without you, he said.

Poland has been one of Ukraine's staunchest supporters, taking in millions of refugees fleeing the fighting and sending tanks and rocket launchers to the Ukrainian military.

Ukraine war in maps: Tracking the Russian invasion

Lula Talks to TIME About Ukraine, Bolsonaro, and Brazil's Fragile Democracy | May 4, 2022 |

Do you think the threat of Ukraine joining NATO was Russia's real reason for invading?

That's the argument they put forward. If they have a secret one, we don't know. The other issue was Ukraine joining the E.U. The Europeans could have said: "No, now is not the moment for Ukraine to join the E.U., we'll wait." They didn't have to encourage the confrontation.

But I think they did try to speak to Russia.

No, they didn't. The conversations were very few. If you want peace, you have to have patience. They could have sat at a negotiating table for 10, 15, 20 days, a whole month, trying to find a solution. I think dialogue only works when it is taken seriously.

If you were President right now, what would you do? Would you have been able to avoid the conflict?

I don't know if I'd be able to. If I was President, I would have phoned [Joe] Biden, and Putin, and Germany, and [Emmanuel] Macron. Because war is not the solution. I think the problem is that if you don't try, you don't fix things. And you have to try.

I sometimes get worried. I was very concerned when the U.S. and the E.U. adopted [Juan] Guaidó [then leader of Venezuela's parliament] as President of the country [in 2019]. You don't play with democracy.

So Volodomyr Zelensky should have talked to Putin more, even with 100,000 Russian troops at his border?

I don't know the President of Ukraine. But his behavior is a bit weird. It seems like he's part of the spectacle. He is on television morning, noon, and night. He is in the U.K. parliament, the German parliament, the French parliament, the Italian parliament, as if he were waging a political campaign. He should be at the negotiating table.

An evening with Noam Chomsky: Contours of Global Order

The topic up for discussion was the `Contours of Global Order: Domination, Stability, Security in a Changing World'. As you can imagine this is a vast area. We began by looking back to 1939 during World War II when the United States had devised the `Grand Area' for post-war dominance. Chomsky talked about how the US wanted to gain unquestionable power and maintain fierce loyalty from their allies. He remarked that this was still true of today, saying `The US presidents may have changed name or "style" but their substance is still very much the same'.

Reports: US preparing to send long-range rocket systems to Ukraine

In a potentially significant development, the US is reportedly preparing to send advanced, long-range rocket systems to Ukraine.

News of what would be a notable step-change in the kind of weapons the Biden adminisration is providing follows pleas from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for such systems, which can fire a barrage of rockets hundreds of miles.

The Multiple Launch Rocket Systems would dramatically increase the range of Ukraine's armed forces.

However, there are concerns in some quarters that they could be used to strike targets inside Russia and risk escalation.

The Biden administration is believed to be leaning toward sending the weapons as part of a package that could be announced as soon as next week.

My good old friend lifted once again the lid on secrecy of NATO's very aggressive stance on Russia ... the frontier expanding to within minutes of historic capital Moscow and its cultural treasures.

"Not my finest hour"

De Hoop Scheffer is still often reminded of the messy NATO summit of April 2008 that took place under his leadership in the Romanian capital Bucharest, in the 'disfigured palace' of the former dictator Ceausescu ('that didn't help either, in terms of atmosphere').

The secretary general from the Netherlands was then caught between US President George Bush Jr., who wanted Georgia and Ukraine to join NATO quickly, and German and French leaders Merkel and Sarkozy, who were much more reserved. Feverish last-minute consultations were needed.

The compromise text that emerged was that Georgia and Ukraine were presented with NATO membership, like a juicy sausage, but without a concrete timeline. That promise was unacceptable to President Putin (also present in Bucharest) and he let it be known: De Hoop Scheffer was given the full blow.

"Not my finest hour", he now calls the NATO summit. "Bush went against the advice of three of his top advisers. They had said to me beforehand: 'Jaap, we are not going to go to war with Russia over Ukraine with NATO'. My impression is that Bush has been talked down by his Vice President Dick Cheney.

"I had a difficult conversation with Putin anyway. It started with him adding, say, biting me, "I'd rather talk to your wife than to you." The night before, at dinner, he'd been sitting next to my wife. I don't know if he meant it as a joke.

"Looking back at that commitment to Georgia and Ukraine, it was - but I've said it before - an unlucky decision. I say that Putin had seized every argument and every text to continue his pursuit of 'I want my empire back'. But here he was presented with a wonderful opportunity.

"It doesn't sit well with me, if I'm honest. It is true that the heads of state and government leaders of NATO are the boss. But as secretary general you are the oil man and the mediator, that is also in my DNA. Usually you reach agreement on the text in the run-up to such a summit. If that doesn't work, then you're really disappointed. It was a really bad experience afterwards.

"I also remember that Putin already spoke very derogatoryly about Ukraine at the time. During the NATO-Russia Council, which immediately followed that NATO summit, he talked about 'just a territory', an insignificant piece of land. Chancellor Merkel then immediately gave him cotton. Although she was against far-reaching commitments to Ukraine, she also took a hard line against Putin when he said derogatory things about that country."

Thus NATO playbook was ready for years ... it was a matter of pulling the trigger ... or rather crossing the red lines of national security of Russia [VIDEO] and lean back for events to be rolled out.

From my diary ...

Ukraine opens international summit calling for 'return' of Crimea from Russia | France24 - Aug. 23, 2021 |

Ukraine and its Western allies agreed to work towards "peacefully" ending Russia's "occupation" of Crimea, without spelling out how, in a summit that sparked anger in Moscow.

The support for Ukraine - which has little chance of changing Russia's position - follows complaints from Kiev in recent months about its allies being reluctant to allow it to join NATO, refusing to deliver arms and maintaining gas agreements with Moscow to the detriment of Ukraine.

Switzerland prevents the export of Danish armored personnel carriers to Ukraine
There are voices in the federal administration and in parliament that see room for maneuver in the War Material Act: Switzerland can very well allow European states to pass on Swiss armaments under certain conditions.

Central politicians such as Councilor of States Pirmin Bischof are in favor of such a more generous interpretation: "The Federal Council should now take action and correct its practice," says the President of the Foreign Policy Commission. The Green Liberal parliamentary group leader Tiana Moser also wants a change of course. After all, it's not about direct arms exports, but about arms that Switzerland has already sold to friendly democracies: "These arms would be passed on to a country that is defending itself against an aggressor."

JFK fights an oil pipeline

As the Soviet Union began developing oil and gas pipelines to Europe, European energy dependence on Russia became a particular concern in Washington.

In the 1960s, Western Europe only imported 6% of its oil from the Soviet bloc. But a new planned oil pipeline - running all the way from the Russian far east, through several European countries including Ukraine and Poland, and terminating in Germany - suggested the Soviets hoped to change that. The prospect of greater dependence, as well as other strategic concerns, raised alarm bells in Washington.

In 1963, the Kennedy administration attempted to stall construction of the Druzhba, or "Friendship," Oil Pipeline by pushing an embargo on wide-diameter pipe to Soviet-aligned countries. Knowing it could not stop the project alone, it pressured allies - especially West Germany, a major pipe exporter - to join.

While Britain refused, West Germany reluctantly agreed, permitting a partial NATO embargo.

Nonetheless, the pipeline was completed a year later with only minor delays.

Reagan's gas gambit sparks crisis

About two decades later, the Reagan administration faced a similar dilemma.

The Importance of Osthandel: West German-Soviet Trade and the End of the Cold War, 1969-1991

Although the 1970s was the era of U.S.-Soviet détente, the decade also saw West Germany implement its own form of détente: Ostpolitik. Trade with the Soviet Union (Osthandel) was a major feature of Ostpolitik. Osthandel, whose main feature was the development of the Soviet energy-export infrastructure, was part of a broader West German effort aimed at promoting intimate interaction with the Soviets in order to reduce tension and resolve outstanding Cold War issues.

Thanks to Osthandel, West Germany became the USSR's most important capitalist trading partner, and several oil and natural gas pipelines came into existence because of the work of such firms as Mannesmann and Thyssen. At the same time, Moscow's growing emphasis on developing energy for exports was not a prudent move. A lack of economic diversification resulted, a development that helped devastate the USSR's economy after the oil price collapse of 1986 and, in the process, destabilize the communist bloc.

Ukraine forces outgunned up to 40 to one by Russian forces, intelligence report reveals | The Independent via YahooNews |

At the same time, as the Russians capture territories in the east, and consolidate their control over the seized cities of Mariupol and Kherson, the bargaining position of the Ukrainian government is being weakened by acute disparity in the numbers of prisoners being held by each side.

The total number of Russian soldiers being held by Ukraine has fallen to 550 from 900 in April after a series of exchanges. Moscow meanwhile has more than 5,600 Ukrainian troops in captivity, the figure enlarged by the surrender of 2,500, including members of the Azov Battalion, in Mariupol.

This difference in numbers between the two sides is being revealed as both Kyiv and Moscow hold highly-publicised trials of prisoners of war.

Generally speaking POWs are lucky. They are alive and taken off the battle field.

Polish president: Calls to Putin like talking to Hitler

Government leaders such as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron should no longer talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Those talks are fruitless and "give the semblance of legitimacy to someone responsible for the crimes committed by the Russian army in Ukraine," Polish President Andrzej Duda said in an interview with German newspaper Bild. Bild published the interview on YouTube late Wednesday evening.

The Polish president says he is "shocked" by the ongoing talks with the Russian leader and by Macron's recent call not to humiliate Putin. "Did anyone speak to Adolf Hitler in this way during World War II," Duda wonders. "Did someone say that he should be able to save face? That we should arrange it so that it is not humiliating to Adolf Hitler?"

How the U.S. pressured Poland into softening its law on Holocaust speech | JPost - June 28, 2018 |

After the prime minister of Poland announced a major retreat on his country's controversial Holocaust speech law, many of his right-wing critics accused him of capitulating to Israel.

The concession presented by Mateusz Morawiecki was an amendment passed hastily in parliament altering a law from February that was meant to punish those who blame the Polish nation for Nazis crimes. The amendment essentially makes it a civil offense rather than a criminal one.

To Polish nationalists, however, the original law was essential to defending the country's honor and preventing scholars and journalists from using terms like "Polish death camps" or portraying Poles as anything but victims of the Nazis. And they knew just who to blame for softening it: Israel.

That was the overriding objective of our founding fathers: Jean Monnet said that building Europe meant building peace. You cannot be clearer than that.

At a time when Europe lay in ruins, devastated by war and devoured by the hatred it had generated, an onlooker would have found it difficult to believe in reconciliation between France and Germany.

Mr Aslin's family said they had spoken to him in a phone call in which he said he had been told "time is running out" by his captors.

"There are no words, just no words, it's got to be everyone's worst nightmare to have a member of your family threatened in this way", Mr Aslin's grandmother Pamela Hall told the BBC.

"Aiden was extremely upset when he called his mother this morning. The bottom line is Aiden has said the DPR has told him nobody from the UK has made contact, and that he will be executed."

"I have to believe what Aiden has said to us, that if the DPR don't get some response then they will execute him. Obviously I hope that isn't true."

Mr Aslin and Mr Pinner moved to Ukraine in 2018, and had served as part of Ukraine's armed forces for several years before the Russian invasion.

Both had Ukrainian partners and had made the country their home. They were captured after spending weeks defending the besieged city of Mariupol.

DOR is not recognized, so NATO or EU countries will not communicate with separatists rebels. Similar to the Dutch after the crash of Malaysian airliner in the Donbas in July 2014. For weeks PM Mark Rutte refused to seek contact with separatists and didn't send investigators in. The bodies were retrieved by local rescue teams and send by train to Kharkiv.

Geopolitical risk of foreign mercenaries and fighters in the Ukraine conflict | Special EurAsia |

The presence of foreign fighters and mercenaries in Ukraine might threaten European security since these combatants might exploit the Ukraine soil as 'bridge' or logistic hub to conduct their activities on the continent.

The Ukraine conflict has become an attractive pole for private military companies (PMCs), militant groups (such as Dzhokar Dudaev Battalion), and foreign special forces that might have access to modern and sophisticated weapons that the West is sending to Kyiv. Considering also that recently the Islamic State has released an audio message in which the terrorist group exhort its fighters to exploit the Ukraine conflict to organise terrorist attacks against Western countries and destroy the Russian Federation, the Ukrainian conflict is raising the geopolitical risk for the entire Eurasian chessboard.

How Foreign Far-Right Volunteers Are Arriving to Fight in Ukraine

The official website of the Legion presents flags of eight states -- Denmark, Poland, Israel, Latvia, Croatia, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Canada but there are more than that. In early March it became known that more than 20,000 people from 52 countries had expressed their desire to join the legion, according to Brigadier General Kyrylo Budanov, commander of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence. Corporal Damien Magrou, 33, a Norwegian corporate attorney in Kyiv, was appointed as a spokesperson of the Legion.

Journalists quickly revealed that Henry Hoeft's real last name was Locke, and that he, along with Mike Dunn, is an activist with the far-right militant group Boogaloo Bois. After that, Hoeft/Locke deleted all his social media accounts and disappeared. His whereabouts are unknown. His comrade Dunn stayed in Ukraine. He recorded a video and stated that they both joined the Georgian National Legion and then left.

Boris Johnson has instructed his ministers to "do everything in their power" to secure the release of two Britons Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has welcomed Defence Secretary Ben Wallace to Kyiv amid concern about British fighters who have been sentenced to death after being captured by Russian forces.

Interfax, a Russian news agency, claimed the men would be able to appeal against their convictions.

Ukraine's ambassador to the UK, Vadym Prystaiko, said he thinks the two Britons captured in the Donetsk People's Republic and sentenced to death will be released in exchange for prisoners held by Ukrainian forces.

Asked whether Russian prisoners could be traded, Mr Prystaiko told BBC News: "It will be a swap.

"The important question is what will be the price for this, because the Russian's were talking about some Ukrainian MPs being swapped for them, especially for those who, I now understand, were working for them for all these years."

He said the Britons have been targeted by Russia because of the UK's "clear position" in "supporting Ukraine".

UK: we don't do diplomacy nor do we communicate with the Kremlin and war criminals ... we are here to win the war and remove all Russians from your territory.

Ambassadors' conference - Speech by M. Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic

Paris, 27 August 2019

We experience this world all together and you know that better than I, but the international order is being disrupted in an unprecedented way, with massive upheaval, probably for the first time in our history, in almost all areas and on a historic scale. Above all, a transformation, a geopolitical and strategic reconfiguration. We are probably in the process of experiencing the end of Western hegemony over the world. We were used to an international order that had been based on Western hegemony since the 18th century - probably French hegemony in the 18th century, inspired by the Enlightenment; probably British hegemony in the 19th century thanks to the Industrial Revolution, and American hegemony in the 20th century thanks to two major conflicts and the economic and political domination of that power.

Things change. And they have been deeply affected by the mistakes made by Westerners in certain crises, by American decisions over the last several years which did not start with this administration, but have led us to re-examine certain involvements in conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere, and to rethink fundamental diplomatic and military strategy and on occasion elements of solidarity which we thought were forever inalienable even though we had developed them together during periods of geopolitical significance, which have however now changed. And it is also the emergence of new powers whose impact we have probably underestimated for far too long.

Russophobia: Anti-Russian Lobby and American Foreign Policy | Stanford 2009 - by A. Tsygankov |

The book explains why the US-Russia post-9/11 partnership did not endure. Washington backed away from its initial commitment to a new level of cooperation with Moscow in addressing issues of terrorism, energy security, political instability and weapons proliferation. Much of America's policy is shaped by an ambition to remain the only world's superpower and by activities of interest groups with the agenda of isolating Russia from the Western world. Although these groups do not dictate the official policy, their influence has been notable. The book analyzes the negative role played by Russophobia and formulates a different approach to Russia in the post-Cold War world.

Group of NATO Leaders Meet in the Hague to Discuss Ukraine

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and a small group of leaders from alliance countries are meeting in the Netherlands to discuss Russia's war in Ukraine and to prepare for a summit in Spain later this month.

The informal gathering was held Tuesday evening at Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte's official residence -Catshuis--  in The Hague and co-hosted by Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen. The other leaders attending were Romania's president, and the prime ministers of Belgium, Poland, Portugal and Latvia.

Against a backdrop of war on the alliance's eastern edge, the talks will likely also address applications by Sweden and Finland to join the alliance. Both countries applied in May to join NATO after decades of military non-alignment. That changed after Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24.

The effect of the agency training programs "cannot be overestimated," said a former senior CIA official.

Washington Helped Trigger the Ukraine War | Cato Institute - Mar 25, 2022 |

The magnitude of the aggressive moves taken by the Pentagon and CIA are just now becoming apparent.

An article by Yahoo national security correspondent Zach Dorfman praising U.S. intelligence agencies for accurately predicting Russia's full‐ scale invasion of Ukraine inadvertently highlights the extent of Washington's military provocations in Ukraine during the period before the outbreak of hostilities.

Earlier warnings from realist scholars that NATO's eastward expansion to Russia's border was poisoning relations with Moscow are finally getting attention in the establishment news media and generating a vigorous debate. A few analysts outside the realism and restraint camp even have conceded that trying to gain NATO membership for Ukraine may have been imprudent. But the magnitude of the aggressive moves taken by the Pentagon and CIA are just now becoming apparent.

For years, the Kremlin made it emphatically clear that inviting Ukraine to join NATO would cross a red line that threatened Russia's vital security interests. However, it was never merely an issue of Kiev's formal accession to the alliance. Comments from Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials signaled that the truly intolerable development was Ukraine becoming a NATO military asset and an arena for the deployment of U.S. and NATO forces.

That danger could--and ultimately did--arise, even though France and Germany continued to block a formal membership invitation.

Russia sanctions 29 British journalists, 20 defense-related individuals | Anadolu Agency |

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced personal sanctions against 29 British journalists and 20 individuals connected to the defense industry.

The ministry said the step was taken in response to sanctions against Russia's media figures and chiefs of defense companies.

"The British journalists, put on the list, are connected to the deliberate spread of phony and lop-sided information about Russia and events in Ukraine and Donbas. Their biased assessments also contribute to inciting Russophobia in British society," it said.

The ministry sanctioned correspondents from the Guardian, Daily Telegraph, Sky News, Times, BBC, Channel 4 News, ITV, Daily Mail, Independent, Financial Times and the Sunday Times.

"Individuals, connected to the UK defense industry, take part in making decisions about arms deliveries to Ukraine, which are used by local punishers and Nazi formations to kill civilians and destroy civil infrastructure," it said.

The list specifies that restrictive measures are introduced against two British deputy defense ministers, heads of the navy and air forces, representatives of the BAE Systems and Thales UK arms companies and three lawmakers.

All of those blacklisted are banned from entry to Russia, said the ministry.

Stuttgart, Germany: Inside the room where Ukraine orders arms from the West | BBC News |

Western allies have already helped deliver nearly $8bn (£6.6bn) worth of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine's armed forces. That's 66,000 tonnes - the equivalent of 5,000 London double-decker buses, as one British officer worked out.

There is now just one factory in Europe that produces Soviet-compatible 152mm artillery ammunition, systems Ukraine's armed forces had been using for decades.

Slowly, they have been transitioning to Nato-standard equipment. Over the past few months Ukraine has been sent more than 100 M777 US howitzers and 300,000 rounds of 155mm ammunition.

Death of 2nd American fighting in Ukraine confirmed as Russia steps up assault in the east | CBS News |

Vladimir Putin's press secretary has said, meanwhile, that Russia will not rule out the death penalty for two U.S. citizens captured on the battlefield.

In an interview aired on Monday night, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Alexander Drueke and Andy Tai Ngoc Huynh, who both flew from Alabama to join the fight in Ukraine, would not be protected by the Geneva Convention, an international treaty that aims to protects prisoners of war from inhuman treatment.

"They're soldiers of fortune," Peskov told NBC. "They were involved in illegal activity in the territory of Ukraine. They were involved in firing [on] and shelling our military personnel."

Different audience, so from a feasible independent view, Derek Sauer has become pro-Western and anti-Russia propaganda. Quite disappointing.

Ukraine war: 80% of troops killed or injured in elite military unit, says commander - and its future is unclear

Speaking near the frontline, south of the city of Severodonetsk, company commander Oleksandr said a core of experienced soldiers who had been fighting together since 2018 have been lost.

"My unit was 100% made up of professional soldiers who have a lot of experience. Now, 80% are incapacitated from serious injuries or death," he says.

In comments which will alarm those backing Ukraine in its four-month long war with Russia, he says he does not know how long his unit can sustain such losses.

"I don't even know how to answer this question," Oleksandr says.

"It's hard. It's hard but we have no choice."
