EU Spring Uprising 2022

by Oui Wed Jul 6th, 2022 at 02:02:33 PM EST

When governments don't show leadership and choose to fight a frontier war of military expansion to the border of Russia, people will suffer on all fronts.

Bread, hunger and rising cost of living led to the Arab Spring in Tunisia and in Lebanon, Syria in 2011. Foreign powers exploited the discrepancy between the elites in power and the working men on the streets. Feeds the looming anger instead of the bellies of wives and children sustaining a bare minimum to survive.

Rightwing governments will fail and hopefully fall to a more social-democratic leadership who will refuse to fight proxy wars for the empires still about.

The unrest in The Netherlands has led to PM Rutte live firing at the farmer protest which by itself was a culmination of years of anger and poor communication of policy ... the last 12 years of Rutte I thru Rutte IV.

PM Mark Rutte he would take a tough stance on farmers' protest as he refused to communicate and appointed a "mediator" London style, from his own conservative party who negotiated the basis for Rutte IV coalition.

Dutch police firing their weapons at farmers protesting in their tractors against the government's nitrogen policy tonight in Heerenveen.

Such cases are unheard of in the Visegrad 4.

The Dutch police has earlier been criticized for excessive violence by UN rapporteur @NilsMelzer

UN rapporteur to step down after accusing Dutch police of brutality

The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, who earlier this year denounced the actions of the Dutch police at coronavirus protests, is resigning from his position. Nils Melzer, from Switzerland, will take over the top position at the International Committee of the Red Cross in July.

The fishermen joined the farmers protest already in early 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic. Mainly due to losing fishing rights from EU regulations and Brexit consequences.

Mark Rutte was warned his authoritarian positioning would lead to escalation

Mark asks party friend Johan Remkes to mediate with the farmers collective - 3 days ago ...

Throwing oil on the fire!

Translation:
For centuries, coastal fishermen have provided healthy fish, work and income, prosperous villages and cities, exports and tradition. But the #nitrogen policy, sky-high fuel prices, wind farms and weird EU laws now also threaten our existence.

Fishermen join the Farmers Protest by blocking 5 ports.

Vlissingen is also blocked,  🐟⤵️⤵️
#vlissingen is now location no. 5 where fishermen - moored together - join the #FarmersFisheriesProtest. Cutters block the harbor. In total, approximately 70 fishing vessels are currently involved in various actions.

All is quiet in government capitol The Hague, just outside the work place of PM Rutte - 't Torentje - always time to talk EU expansion.

No directives on #nitrogen w/o talks with the farmers

WEF Food Innovation Hubs agrifood sector scalable solutions

The Netherlands is to form the centre for global food innovation with the Global Coordinating Secretariat (GCS) in Wageningen. This was announced by Dutch Prime Minister Rutte during a digital meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF). The GCS is part of the WEF's food system initiative to drive innovations and new technologies in the food chain that contribute to global food security. From the Netherlands, the GCS will manage the further development of global regional food innovation hubs, including the European hub in Food Valley Wageningen.

An unknown unknown for Libertarian Mark Rutte?

Buying power of supermarkets a threat to food production | SOMO - Feb. 5, 2013 |

If I were to be kind to Dutch prime minister, a favorite son of Trump and Johnson, I would say next to awkward loss of memory, he is likely diagnosed with tunnel vision.

Yet the EU ended the cap of milk quota and the farmers invested in more diary expansion to increase sales and profitability.

Dutch Supermarket Supply Chain - Ending the Human Suffering Behind Our Food | OxfamNovib - June 6, 2018 |

The Dutch supermarket sector is heavily consolidated, with the two largest supermarket chains controlling over 50% of the market. Supermarket turnover has shown sustained growth over the past decade, and life without almost daily supermarket visits is hardly imaginable for most Dutch consumers. At the same time, supermarkets are competing with each other fiercely in the battle for consumers.

They try to attract customers by offering low prices for good quality food and a wide variety of options year-round. The growing dominance of supermarkets in the food sector in the Netherlands and elsewhere, through the use of this competitive model, has negative impacts on millions of farmers and workers who grow and process food under harsh conditions.

Oxfam commissioned new research for its Behind the Barcodes campaign, which is set out in the main campaign report Ripe for Change. It included research into the distribution of value and power in food supply chains, a Supermarkets Scorecard, and a number of cases studies, including one focussed on seafood supply chains.

During the Cold War, subsidized dairy farming had a surplus of products. Sometimes the prices were lower than feasible to bring the products to market. The well-known EU mountain of butter was sold to the poor people of the Soviet Union under Communism. As appreciation, the Russian are coming to destroy us. Damn fools we are.

I object to the title of this thread
Firstly on technical grounds: on the 6th July, we are no longer in spring in Europe.

Secondly, because (nothing new here) it has no relation whatsoever to the content of the thread: yet another Oui rant about how bad the EU is to oppose Putin's insane war on Ukraine.

Is not an incident of today, protest has been brewing for months. Clearly escalated when the definite planning was dropped in the mass media with little or no discourse with the farmers.

Yep ... an unnecessary war ... after the Covid-19 pandemic, logistic opheaval across the globe, rising energy price late Summer 2021, refusal to engage in basic diplomacy.

Brief history of non-aggression of America and NATO allies.

U.S. military power used in wars across the globe with little or no legality nor in accordance with the U.N. Charter or International Law. Pretty much covers my life's story of too many lies and deceit by warmongers.

Present diary is NOT about Ukraine, but about inflation, cost of living, fail of energy transition, mounting crisis as problems are kicked down the road, a conservative libertarian policy with preference for the very wealthy and trampling on human rights, labor rights and the child rights. In addition institutional racism and discrimination of minorities by Dutch police. Rutte has admitted as such and had to convey an apology ... thinking his friend Boris Johnson.

Recent diary ...

- Tunisian spark -

On December 17, 2010, a young Tunisian who sold vegetables from a barrow sets himself on fire to protest police harassment.

Mohamed Bouazizi dies on January 4, 2011 but not before his gesture goes viral, sparking protests against the cost of living and the country's authoritarian president, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Socio-Economic Factors of the Jasmine Revolution

In December! Yet the domino effect of unrest in MENA region became known as Arab Spring. Sowing seeds for a renewal ... same with the action of Dutch agrifood sector ... transition is key.

Syria: Climate Change, Drought and Social Unrest | Center for Climate and Security - 2012 |

Syria's current social unrest is, in the most direct sense, a reaction to a brutal and out-of-touch regime and a response to the political wave of change that began in Tunisia early last year. However, that's not the whole story. The past few years have seen a number of significant social, economic, environmental and climatic changes in Syria that have eroded the social contract between citizen and government in the country, have strengthened the case for the opposition movement, and irreparably damaged the legitimacy of the al-Assad regime.

Albanians Continue Protesting Against Rising Prices Despite PM's Promises | Balkan Insight - Mar. 14, 2022 |

A banner at the rally in Tirana's Skanderbeg Square reading "Stop Stealing From Us" was carried by protesters from the square to Prime Minister Edi Rama's office as citizens face daily increase of prices.

Protesters warned that they would be protesting every day until their demands for lower prices are meet.

In an attempt to confuse the popular revolt over prices, Prime Minister Rama issued a statement after Saturday's gatherings saying that he felt "ashamed that a NATO country doesn`t understand the consequences of the war n Ukraine".

Last week, the price of oil reached a new high in Albania, of around 2 euros a litre, which was some 30 per cent higher than a week before.

There is no other option than complete victory for UA and recovering all territory occupied by Russia. A frozen conflict too is not acceptable.

Well thought through strategy of PM Mark Rutte ... highly gifted as military strategist ... has no history of insight in the armed forces as he is a business person, multi-nationals and loves to parrot the statements coming from the greater DC area or Whitehall in London and closely inked to GCHQ and NATO HQ.

No initiatives, a true believer following any leader of Conservative Schnitt.

The Guardian view on Italy after Draghi: there may be trouble ahead | Editorial |

It was in July 2012 that Mario Draghi, then head of the European Central Bank, said he would do "whatever it takes" to defend the euro against speculative attack. Reassuring markets and resolving the eurozone sovereign debt crisis, his intervention saved Italy from additional borrowing costs, which could have sunk an economy that was "too big to fail" and imperilled the single currency. Exactly 10 years later, Mr Draghi's premature departure as Italy's prime minister - necessitating an early election in September - threatens to resurrect the debt demons of the past, along with some others for good measure.

....
Current polls suggest that the autumn vote will deliver the most extreme rightwing government in western Europe, comprising Giorgia Meloni's post-fascist Brothers of Italy party, the nationalist League, and Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia as a junior partner. As leader of the largest party, Ms Meloni - whose illiberal politics closely resemble those of Hungary's prime minister, Viktor Orbán - would be favourite to become prime minister. This prospect would be alarming in any context. Against the continental backdrop of Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine, a related energy crisis and the risk of recession, it constitutes a menace to European unity on multiple fronts.

On issues such as immigration and LGBT rights, a Meloni-Salvini axis would be likely to line Italy up alongside countries such as Poland and Hungary in aggressively challenging European norms. Echoing Brexit-style arguments, Ms Meloni has called for the reassertion of the supremacy of the Italian constitution over EU law, and an "Italians first" policy on accessing welfare services and benefits.

German ministers agree on final CAP plan, split on green rule suspension | EurActiv |

Though ministers prepared their final version of the plan, it remains open whether Germany will use the option offered by the EU Commission to also allow cultivation on fallow land in 2023 in view of the Ukraine war, which normally has to remain uncultivated in the interest of biodiversity.

Despite the success in finalising the strategic plan, dealing with the consequences of the Ukraine war remains a contentious issue between the federal and state governments.

While a majority of state ministers were in favour of relaxing environmental requirements and allowing temporary cultivation on fallow land during the meeting, according to Schulze, Özdemir was sceptical and first wants to "examine the option carefully".

For Germany not to risk cuts in EU subsidies, four per cent of arable land must be left fallow according to an environmental measure in the new CAP.
