Testing Huntington in Ukraine (4.00 / 5)

The damage done by Islamophobes in Europe, Middle East and the US is immense. These groups claim to be 'believers' in the Clash of Civilization, but is false and pushing forward their own agenda. The exploitation of Huntington's thesis in a world where people searching for their identity, ethnicity and cultural history.
Many conflicts are sourced in the aftermath of WWI and the artificial borders drawn by old-colonial powers. See Iraq and Syria after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the Crimean peninsula was transfered to the Soviet Union. We still see a Cold War policy playing out in Eastern Europe: Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo and now in the Ukraine. The revolutions in Kosovo, Libya and Ukraine are part of a proxy war between handful Western nations and Russia, pushing the frontier deep into the heart of the old Soviet empire. Strategic interests in gas pipelines also play a role.
Look at the history of the Crimean and what has passed since Communism took hold in the Soviet Union. Handing the Crimea to the Ukraine was a 'gift' by Nikita Khrushchev in 1954 due to a 300 year-old anniversary. A similar 'gift' was by Stalin, handing Abkhazia and Ossetia to the republic of Georgia.
In the end, it's ethnicity, religion and cultural ties that will result in a nationalist movement for independence. The violent overthrow of the Yanukovich regime was not one that will unite, but will divide the people of the Ukraine into three federal states.

The marvel here, for me, is the tenacity with which one story edits. No great insights here-just a remarkable juxtaposition I read today that struck me.

Does Boris Johnson's victory in the London mayoral contest portend a Tory victory in the British legislative elections that must take place between now and 2010?
Regardless, it tallies with European electorate's' more general movement to the right. In London, as in Italy, the right has just resumed power. It was already in control in Germany, the Netherlands, and, in Scandinavian countries, of Denmark, and also of Sweden, long presented as a bastion of social democracy. This shift to the right also holds for Eastern Europe. Conservative or [neo]Liberal parties have been elected in Warsaw, Prague, the Baltic countries, Bucharest. They have the wind in their sails in Hungary, where the left in power is in its death throes as the 2010 legislative elections approach.
Virtually alone, Spain seems to resist. However, José Luis Zapatero's election owes much to the tactical errors committed by his right wing rivals during the March elections, as well as to their anachronistic takes on social issues.
So the phenomenon is as extensive as it is spectacular and the wear and tear of being in power - which obtains most notably for Great Britain, governed by Labor since 1997 - does not suffice to explain it. "In the background," emphasizes Georges Mink, Research Director at ISP-CNRS, "there are enormous economic and social changes, the wilting of ideological certainties and - since the fall of the Berlin Wall - the appearance of new threats such as immigration."

Boris Johnson last night notched up the Tories' greatest electoral success since John Major's surprise victory in the 1992 general election when he unseated Ken Livingstone as mayor of London.
Ecstatic Conservatives cheered at London's City Hall, at the end of a count lasting more than 15 hours, as the man who had been dismissed as the Bertie Wooster of British politics took charge of one of the biggest political offices in Britain.
Johnson won just over 1m first preference votes to secure 42.48%; Ken Livingstone came second with 893,877 first preference votes (36.38%).
Johnson, who was declared the winner shortly before midnight, reassured London that he would do his best to maintain his new serious image. "I was elected as new Boris and I will govern as new Boris, or whatever the phrase is," he joked this morning in a pun on Tony Blair's famous New Labour declaration. David Cameron quickly hailed the result, and there was even a congratulatory phone call from Michael Bloomberg, mayor of New York.
The year 2008 was a turning point in European politics, not only due to the banking and financial crisis, just as 2014 was. Revolutionary years that changed politics. Both years too mark decisions by NATO that would ultimately lead to a war in Europe in 2022.

The author aimed the beginning of his book especially at the Russian approach towards international policy for the Eurasian region. He uses scientific studies of traditional writers and experts of international relations theories and security from both the West and the East such as H. F. Mackinder, Z. Brzezinski, A. Dugin or N. Savitskii. Hahn recognises Russian fear of the West (especially based on the Western post-Cold War military interventions) as the main motivation for opposition. In general, Vladimir Putin is described as a pragmatic Russian leader who has changed Russian public wishes (in the field of the international policy) to reality. He has done it in the context of Eurasianism, based on rational thinking instead of any ideology.
Huntington’s missing conflict potential between pro-Russian and pro-Western elements inside the Ukraine of the 1990s is described, too. Deeper examination of Ukraine’s history includes the ancient connection between Ukrainians and Russians, first misunderstanding of Ukrainians and Jews or Ukrainians and Poles (for instance the Great revolt led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky) and of course, the conflict of Galicia.
