Dutch civil servants criticize Cabinet's unconditional support for Israel | 20 Oct. 2023 |

The defence of Israel by politicians is increasing Islamophobia in The Netherlands | The New Arab - 29 Nov. 2023 |

With its unconditional support for Israel's "right to self-defence," outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s cabinet is being accused of complicity in the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza.

For many, this unquestioning support means the Dutch government accepts Israeli war rhetoric that identifies Hamas with the entire civilian population of Gaza, and equates Palestinians with animals and ISIS

Gaza destruction worse than in WWII Germany, EU's top diplomat says | Japan Times - 12 Dec. 2023 |

The situation in Gaza is "catastrophic, apocalyptic," with destruction proportionally "even greater" than that which Germany experienced in World War II, the European Union's top diplomat Josep Borrell said on Monday.

Israel's military response to Hamas' Oct. 7 attacks has resulted in "an incredible number of civilian casualties," Borrell said after chairing a meeting of EU foreign ministers.

He said the EU was also "alarmed by the violence in the West Bank by extremist settlers" and condemned the Israeli government's decision to approve 1,700 more housing units in Jerusalem, in what Brussels considers a violation of international law.

Borrell made clear he saw Israel's military operation as disproportionate in terms of civilian deaths and damage to civilian property and infrastructure.

"The human suffering constitutes an unprecedented challenge to the international community," he said.

"Civilian casualties are between 60% and 70% of the overall deaths," based on Gaza health ministry figures, and "85% of the population is internally displaced."

"The destruction of buildings in Gaza ... is more or less or even greater than the destruction suffered by the German cities during the Second World War," taken proportionally, Borrell said.

Israel eligible to be tried for crimes, but ICC relunctant: Ex-UN official | TRT World - 15 Dec. 2023 |

The ICC has received multiple cases against Israel for its devastating assault on Gaza, including referrals from countries such as South Africa and groups of lawyers.

Israel and its leaders must face accountability for their crimes in Gaza, but the current prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) seems determined not to do that at the moment, according to a former UN special rapporteur.

“It’s important to stress that the Israeli leadership, Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu, his war Cabinet, and many members of the Israeli army are responsible for the commission of war crimes, crimes against humanity and, possibly, the crime of genocide,” Dugard told Anadolu in an interview.

“They must be held accountable for these crimes.”

Dugard stressed that the ICC is the primary institution that “should be used to hold Israelis responsible for their crimes” in the Gaza, where Israeli attacks have now killed almost 18,800 Palestinians and wounded nearly 51,000 more.

“Unfortunately, at present, it (ICC) is not being used. The prosecutor of the ICC seems determined not to prosecute Israel and its leaders,” he said.

The current ICC prosecutor is Karim Khan, who has recently faced backlash for accepting an Israeli invitation to see Israeli areas attacked by Hamas on October 7, while not being allowed to visit Gaza.

Jacques Delors, one of Europe's greats, has died | LeMonde |

Jacques Delors, who died on Wednesday, December 27 at the age of 98 years old, was a genuine socialist, horrified by injustice and eager to make a difference. History will also remember that he was one of the great Christian democrats who made Europe. That was his paradox. In 1985, he was appointed president of the European Commission. He was a passionate, self-made, Christian trade unionist who embodied the golden age of the Commission by paving the way - alongside François Mitterrand and Helmut Kohl - to the euro.

The Gaza Crucifixion | Tikun Olam |

As churches in Gaza are attacked and worshippers murdered, Christians around the world grapple with genocide

As a Jew, I view the horrors [Gaza War 2008] within the Jewish tradition and try to denounce it in terms related to my own religious traditions.  I am sure Muslims are doing the same.

Tonight I wanted to talk about Christians and Gaza. Both because they are among the largest religion in the world and because Israel has, in the past week, singled out two churches, St. Porphyrious and Holy Family, for merciless attack.  An IDF sniper killed two women within the latter church's compound.  He first shot one of the two women. When the second woman came to her aid, he killed her as well.

There are only 700 Christians left in Gaza. But precisely because of that, their suffering as a religious minority deserves special consideration.

Palestine was, of course, the birthplace of Christianity. Bethlehem (along with Jerusalem) are particularly significant places in the Christian tradition.  There are 50,000 Palestinian Christians.  Despite differences in their respective religious traditions (Muslim and Christian) there is no difference in the extent of their suffering.

However, they each understand that suffering from within their respective theologies. Canon Naim Ateek, one of Palestine's leading theologians and the founder of Palestinian liberation theology, evokes the suffering of Christ as his model.

Irish MEPs criticise von der Leyen as she leaves debate without taking questions | Irish Times - 18 Oct. 2023 |

Irish MEPs from various parties expressed sharp criticism of European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen as she left a European Parliament debate on the Israel-Hamas conflict without responding to questions.

During her opening remarks to the parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, Dr von der Leyen defended last week's trip to Tel Aviv after she was criticised for expressing unqualified support for Israel's response to the Hamas attack.

"Only if we acknowledge Israel's pain and its right to defend itself will we have the credibility to say that Israel should react as a democracy in line with international humanitarian law," she told the chamber.

The "essential starting point" of the response needed to be that "Europe stands with Israel in this dark moment", she said.

"After only 10 minutes into this debate, von der Leyen left the chamber!" Fianna Fáil MEP Barry Andrews wrote on social media.

"This is shameful and disrespectful," to the parliament, he continued, accusing her of having done "irrevocable damage" to the EU's credibility by "failing to call out Israel for war crimes".

"She should leave her job as well," commented Left independent Mick Wallace, while fellow Left independent Clare Daly has also called on the EC president to resign.

Green MEP Grace O'Sullivan objected that Dr von der Leyen had not called for a ceasefire and said leadership from the top of the EU had been "severely lacking".

Sinn Féin's Chris MacManus, one of the Irish MEPs to get a speaking slot in the debate, said that Dr von der Leyen's actions underscored why individual member states should retain their veto on EU foreign policy decisions.

Ursula Von der Leyen repeat performance on the last day in EP before Xmas recess ... busy, busy, very busy schedule ... no time for debate or nasty questions from social-democrats ...

US to punish German 'treachery' | The Guardian - 16 Feb. 2003 |

America is to punish Germany for leading international opposition to a war against Iraq. The US will withdraw all its troops and bases from there and end military and industrial co-operation between the two countries - moves that could cost the Germans billions of euros.

The plan - discussed by Pentagon officials and military chiefs last week on the orders of Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld - is designed 'to harm' the German economy to make an example of the country for what US hawks see as Chancellor Gerhard Schröder's 'treachery'.

The hawks believe that making an example of Germany will force other countries heavily dependent on US trade to think twice about standing up to America in future.
This follows weeks of increasingly angry exchanges between Rumsfeld and Germany, in which at one point he taunted Germany and France for being an irrelevant part of 'old Europe'.
