Blinken says gap remains between Israel's intent to protect civilians and results | Anadolu Agency |
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday that there remains a gap between Israel's intent to protect civilians and results on the ground in Gaza.
"We stand here almost a week into this campaign in the south, after the end of the humanitarian pause, it remains imperative that Israel put a premium on civilian protection," Blinken said during a news conference in Washington with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron.
"And there does remain a gap between exactly what I said when I was there, the intent to protect civilians, and the actual results that we're seeing on the ground," he said.
Blinken said the US is talking with the Israelis on a regular basis, including President Joe Biden's conversation Thursday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about protecting civilians.
"Israel has an obligation to do everything possible to put a premium on protecting civilians and maximizing humanitarian assistance," he said.
The remarks come as officials in Gaza said at least 17,177 people have died since Israel began its war in the coastal enclave in retaliation for Hamas' Oct. 7 cross-border attack.
The vast majority of those killed in Gaza -- about 70% -- have been women and children. More than 46,000 have been injured.

In Israel, Why Netanyahu Humiliated Biden | Brookings by Martin Indyk - 12 March 2010 |
What happened to Vice President Biden this week in Jerusalem was egregious but hardly new. Right-wing governments in Israel have regularly embarrassed high-level U.S. officials by making announcements about new settlement activity during or just after their visits. But it usually happens to secretaries of state. It infuriated James Baker, confounded Condoleezza Rice, and appalled Madeleine Albright.
When I served as Albright's ambassador in Israel, during Bibi Netanyahu's first term as prime minister, he announced a major extension to an existing West Bank settlement as she departed Israel after one of her efforts to move the peace process forward. When she heard the news, she called me on an open line and shouted: "You tell Bibi that he needs to stop worrying about his right wing and start worrying about the United States."
It was good advice, but it went unheeded. Antagonizing the Clinton administration eventually contributed to Netanyahu's downfall. Israeli voters punished him for mishandling the relationship with Israel's only true ally.
The second time around, one might have expected Netanyahu to be more circumspect about his relations with the Obama administration, especially because Israel is now so dependent on the United States to deal with the growing threat from Iran.
But three developments seem to have emboldened Netanyahu. First, Obama lost the Israeli public by convincing them--through his Cairo speech and customary cool--that he wanted to distance the United States from Israel in order to curry favor with the Arab World. For the first time, Netanyahu found himself in the unusual position of being more popular at home than the U.S. president (Clinton and Bush enjoyed 70-80 percent public approval ratings in Israel).

The Shift: Congress embraces McCarthyism | Mondoweiss |
It's now generally understood that McCarthyism was a dark and shameful aspect of our history. Oppenheimer made $953 million at the U.S. box office this summer and the bulk of Christopher Nolan's film isn't about the bomb, but the Red Scare attacks that destroyed the physicist's reputation.
Political repression might get pilloried in films these days, but you can still hear the faint echo of the Wisconsin Senator's accusations in any number of policies being pushed throughout the country. One of the most glaring examples is the GOP's ongoing war on libraries.
However, that crusade is mainly waged by just one party. The war on Palestine activism that has emerged since October 7th is a bipartisan affair. Just look at what's happened in recent days.
Josh Gottheimer wants to shut down a panel on Palestine at Rutgers. Marco Rubio wants Biden staffers who signed a letter calling for a ceasefire investigated for "supporting pro-Hamas policies." The presidents of Harvard, MIT, and Penn were grilled on Capitol Hill by the House Education committee for not sufficiently cracking down on pro-Palestine students.
GOP Rep. Virginia Foxx said that the administrators were being given a chance to answer and "atone" for what went on at their schools. Harvard president Claudine Gay (who is the school's first black woman leader) received the most scorn.

What she cares about is Israel and therefore she has a vested in pushing the lie that criticism of Israel is somehow anti-Jewish.
To that end, the House passed H.R. 894 this week, a resolution that falsely states anti-Zionism is antisemitism and attacks common protest chants like, "Palestine Will Be Free." 95 Democrats voted in favor of the bill. The final tally was 311-14, with 92 present votes from Democrats.
The only Republican to vote against the resolution was Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie. Here's the 13 Democrats who rejected it: Representatives Rashida Tlaib, Jamaal Bowman, Cori Bush, Gerald Connolly, Jesús Garcia, Raúl Grijalva, Pramila Jayapal, Summer Lee, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Delia Ramirez, and Bonnie Watson Coleman.

The Terror Industry and Anti-Jihadism, Who Benefits? | Tikun Olam - 16 Sept. 2010 |
Norman Finkelstein coined the phrase the “Holocaust industry” in his book of the same name, to describe the nexus of Jewish groups, lawyers, politicians, and communal leaders who enrich their power and pocketbook by trumpeting the anti-Semitism threat and causing anxiety and paranoia among world Jewry as a result. As a result of Finkelstein’s acute analysis, he’s earned outrage and scorn from those in the Jewish community who he has skewered.
For the past decade or more, since the 1990s demise of the Communist “menace” and its accompanying gravy train, neocons have turned to terror as their new bogeyman. A new Terror Industry has sprung up and it is populated with the usual retired generals (William Boykin), former government officials (John Bolton, Frank Gaffney), corporate opportunists (Aubrey Chernick), ideologues and intellectual heavy-lifters (Daniel Pipes, David Horowitz, Norman Podhoretz, Marty Peretz, Bill Kristol). Just as the Jefferson’s tree of liberty needed to be fed with the blood of tyrants, so the Terror apparatus needs to be fed with new political fodder.
Such is the effort led by Jewish pro-Israel neocons to turn anti-jihadism into the Terror Industry’s new mantra.
