U.S. Provoked Conflict In Europe

Chinese President Xi Jinping, while talking to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky over phone, says dialogue and negotiations are the only viable way out for the Ukraine crisis.

World Insights: Toxic friendship -- How Washington exploits Ukraine crisis to shackle Europe

A report published Monday by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) indicated that military expenditure in Europe shot up by 13 percent in 2022 -- its steepest year-on-year increase in at least 30 years.

The United States provoked a conflict in Ukraine to "turn Europe into a vassal" and has managed to use the Ukraine crisis to "destabilise Europe," economist Pierre de Gaulle, grandson of former French President Charles de Gaulle, told French newspaper Le Parisien.

In fact, a self-serving United States never truly treats its "allies" as friends. The EU's strict sanctions against Russia, following America, have led to a tense energy supply, increased inflation, and a cost-of-living crisis across Europe. Meanwhile, American companies exporting energy are making a fortune.

Washington continues to fan the flame, seeking to proloog and expand the Ukraine crisis. Such a move will increase Europe's reliance on the United States for energy and security, and erode Europe's efforts towards strategic autonomy.

America Benefits Most

The overtime work at the ammunition plant reflects the "prosperity" of the entire U.S. military industry. Since the escalation of the Ukraine crisis, the United States has constantly hyped up the "Russia threat" and incited European allies to continuously upgrade their military assistance to Ukraine and expand their own military capabilities.

Since late February 2022, EU countries have pledged to beef up their arsenals by some 230 billion U.S. dollars, with Germany alone planning to channel 100 billion euros this year to modernize its military, Yahoo News website reported in November 2022.

Military expenditure by states in Central and Western Europe in 2022 for the first time surpassed that in 1989, as the Cold War was ending, according to the SIPRI report.
American arms dealers benefit most from Europe's military expansion. European officials have accused the Americans of making a fortune from the conflict, while EU countries suffer. "The fact is, if you look at it soberly, the country that is most profiting from this war is the U.S. because they are selling more gas and at higher prices, and because they are selling more weapons," one senior official complained to the American magazine Politico.

To seize the opportunity to rake in huge profits, the U.S. Department of Defense set up a working group in August last year, jointly led by the policy department and the acquisition and sustainment department, responsible for evaluating and accelerating the implementation of foreign military sales.

In the energy market, the United States is also ruthless in fleecing its European allies. "A big winner from the energy crisis in Europe: the U.S. economy," The Wall Street Journal bluntly stated.

The EU imported around 94.73 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in 2022, compared to 57.27 million tons in 2021. The United States represented 41 percent of the supply in all of 2022 and stayed the EU's top LNG supplier, according to a report by the research firm Kpler.

Western Arrogance and European Vassalage | El Pais |

In the face of the war in Ukraine and the growing tension with China, the West (above all the United States) has adopted an arrogant rather than defensive attitude which almost no one else in the rest of the world follows. It is a vestige from colonial or imperial times and, above all, from the unipolar moment that prevailed until recently.

'The Biden administration aspires to achieve a unipolar order that no longer exists', according to analyst Stephan Walt, who claims that the US 'fears' a 'multipolar' world. Obama during his tenure once called Russia a mere 'regional power'. Yet now, we can see it more clearly.

In this world there are third parties, including some Europeans like Macron, who do not want to get caught up in the festering tensions between Washington-Beijing, let alone with Moscow. The world has changed, but the West seems either unaware or unwilling. It not only wants to defend its interests, values, and ways of life, which is normal and legitimate, but also to lecture others. Already since the middle of the last decade, the Western economy has been smaller than the rest, a trend that has been on the rise ever since, not to mention the demographic weight in this regard. The West will have to adapt.

Almost no country outside the realm of US allies (the West Plus, which Moscow calls the 'collective West') has followed the sanctions against Russia imposed from Washington or Brussels (the EU is already on its 10th sanctions package, which is a bit ridiculous), which are making a dent in Moscow, but not as significantly as quickly as hoped for and expected. India, the US's great hope against China, is going its own way. Saudi Arabia, a key US player in the Gulf, has seen that it has lost interest in Washington (except for selling arms to Riyadh), and has made a diplomatic rapprochement with its arch-enemy Iran, mediated by China (which will make little difference to that rivalry in the long run).

Poverty grips Ukraine as war drags on | The Guardian |

People turn to handouts and pawning goods as Kyiv's bustling bars belie reality of life in wartime for many

Those who can afford it, he says, will come back to get their goods within two weeks. Almost half, he adds, will not, leaving Treasure to sell on the items from a back room with displays of phones and watches. "People are struggling because of the war. They don't have money." Many have lost their jobs, he says, while prices have skyrocketed even for those who have jobs.

The scene in the pawn shop illustrates the crisis of growing poverty in Ukraine, the reality of which stands in contrast to the surface bustle of Kyiv's busy restaurants and bars where it is often hard to get a table, with many living a precarious existence.

Poverty increased from 5.5% to 24.2% in Ukraine in 2022, pushing 7.1 million more people into poverty with the worst impact out of sight in rural villages, according to a recent report by the World Bank. With unemployment unofficially at 36% and inflation hitting 26.6% at the end of 2022, the institution's regional country director for eastern Europe, Arup Banerji, had warned that poverty could soar.

Behind his window in Treasure, Stepanov describes the hardships experienced even by those who have work. "The price of everything has gone up. Food is the most expensive and then it is fuel for the car. Some things have gone up by 40-50%. Before the war my wife would go to the supermarket to shop and it would cost 200 hryvnia, now the same shop costs 400-500."

The World Bank In Ukraine

Now in its second year, Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a tragedy with far-reaching human and economic impacts. Ukraine's operating, recovery, and reconstruction needs are staggering. To support the continuation of essential government services over the last year, the World Bank has mobilized more than $23 billion in emergency financing, including commitments and pledges, which includes grants, guarantees, and linked parallel financing from the US, UK, European countries, and Japan. This includes $3.4 billion on the World Bank's own balance sheet, with another $6.5 billion on the Bank balance sheet planned over the next 12 months.

Bank of England economist says people need to accept they are poorer, 26 Apr
Huw Pill told a podcast in the US that there was a "reluctance to accept that, yes, we're all worse off". He said in response to higher bills and other costs rising, workers had responded by asking for wage increases and businesses were charging more.

UK inflation, the rate at which prices rise, was 10.1% in the year to March. The rate dipped last month from 10.4% but that does not mean prices are falling. It means they are rising at a slightly slower pace.

yes. An inflation rate expresses slope. Rate expresses (+ or -) change in a quantity (Q) over time. In this case, total legal tender circulating among an uspecified population, "economy," or universe. The relationship, or ratio, of tender value (extrinsic, intrinsic, or systematic) to tender quantity is not well understood since tender value is commonly expressed as change in all "prices," a metric directly related to Q tender issued by monetary authorities whose ideal rate of increase is + 2% (of total Q) per annum, a formula in turn said to "stabilize" prices, not decrease them. Low prices are bad. Tax is bad. High prices are bad. BUT profit "growth" is good. Thus, a negative or positive inflation rate in any one period IMPACTING any producer consumer worker's expenses is bad or good.
Mr Pill said people demanding pay [a "producer" cost] increases and businesses [producers are "consumers," too. Who knew?!] putting prices up added to [FALSE] inflation and caused prices to rise even further across the economy.

"Somehow in the UK, someone needs to accept that they're worse off and stop trying to maintain their real [easily the stupidest econ idiom] spending [not purchasing?] power by bidding up [?] prices [!], whether through higher wages or passing energy costs [of production] on to customers etc," he told the Beyond Unprecedented podcast from Columbia Law School.

Unions blast Bank of England economist who said Britons 'need to accept' they're poor

On Sunday at 2 am from the Baltic Sea at the height of Górki Zachodnie, the services towed a boat with three foreigners who claimed to be Spaniards. Their unit had technical problems and the help of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service was needed.

Police officers initially determined that the boat was not equipped with the basic elements to guarantee safety, including navigation lighting, means of communication and rescue equipment. In addition, the officers determined that the crew of the boat did not have permission to operate this unit and did not obtain permission to dive - Deputy Commissioner Karina Kamińska from the press office of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Gdańsk told us at that time. Alireza Akbari, Ex Official Executed By Iran On Spying Charges, Was Paid $2.4 Million By MI6: Report | NDTV - April 23, 2023 |

A former top Iranian defence official, who was executed in January this year, was a British spy, intelligence officials have said. Alireza Akbari, Iran's former deputy defence minister, gave the country's strategic information, including nuclear secrets, to the British for 15 years, The New York Times reported citing intelligence officials. Iran charged Mr Akbari with being an agent of the MI6, but the British government has never acknowledged he was a spy. Britain had called Akbari's hanging a barbaric act and said it would not go unpunished.

The NYT Report said that a British intelligence official went to Israel in 2008 and told the officials there that they had a mole with access to Iran's nuclear secret.

The British official even provided information to Israel that suggested Iran was clandestinely building nuclear weapons. A year later, then US President Barack Obama made the information public, sending shockwaves across the world.

Over the years, Mr Akbari also disclosed the identity and activities of more than 100 Iranian officials, the NYT report further said.

Among them was Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the nuclear scientist known as the "father of the Iranian bomb", who was be assassinated by Israel in 2020.

China debate: John Mearsheimer | Hugh White | Tom Switzer | Centre for Independent Studies Australia - 2020 |

For years, Australian policymakers have balanced China's desire for an enhanced regional role with our desire for U.S. protection. However, contrary to the Canberra consensus, there is going to be an intense strategic rivalry between our major trading partner and our major strategic ally.

According to John Mearsheimer, one of America's leading foreign-policy thinkers, Washington will not let China become the dominant military power in the region without putting up a serious fight. In these circumstances, it's naïve to think that Australia can sit on the sidelines and get the best of both worlds: unconstrained trade with China while keeping the U.S. security umbrella over its head. Canberra must support Uncle Sam.

However, Australia's future will be dominated by China, says one of Australia's leading strategic thinkers Hugh White. Treasury forecasts show that the Chinese economy will be about 80 per cent bigger than America's within a dozen years. In this environment, Canberra must prepare for the new strategic terrain in the wake of America's declining leadership, and we would be unwise to support Washington in a confrontation with China that America probably cannot win.

Hugh White pointed to importance of any global power to control Central Asia ... the U.S. pulling out of Afghanistan was a major blow to lose critical foothold. Furthermore failing to reestablish any form of relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran and losing favor from the Arab countries, puts America in a great predicament.

'A sea change': Biden reverses decades of Chinese trade policy | Politico - Dec. 26, 2022 |

Forget tariffs. Biden's actions to crack down on Beijing's tech development will do more to hinder the Chinese economy -- and divide the two nations -- than Trump ever did.

After decades of U.S. efforts to engage China with the prospect of greater development through trade, the era of cooperation is coming to a screeching halt.

The White House and Congress are quietly reshaping the American economic relationship with the world's second-largest economic power, enacting a strategy to limit China's technological development that breaks with decades of federal policy and represents the most aggressive American action yet to curtail Beijing's economic and military rise.

The new federal rules, executive orders and pending legislation aimed at China's high-tech sectors, which began this fall and will continue in 2023, are the culmination of years of debate spanning three administrations. Taken together, they represent an escalation of former President Donald Trump's tariffs and trade disputes against Beijing that could ultimately do more to slow Chinese technological and economic development -- and divide the two economies -- than anything the 45th president did while in office.

"You really have seen a sea change in the way that they're looking at the relationship with China," said Clete Willems, who helped design China economic policy in the Trump White House as Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economics and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council. "[The Biden] administration views Chinese indigenous innovation as a per se national security threat ... and that is a big leap from where we've ever been before."

Reality Check: Falsehoods in US Perceptions of China | MFA PRC - June 19, 2022 |

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has recently delivered a speech at Asia Society outlining the US administration's approach to China. With carefully calibrated language, he sought to promote the "China threat" narrative, interfere in China's internal affairs, and smear China's domestic and foreign policy, all in an attempt at full-blown containment and suppression of China.

In what is to follow, we will use facts and figures to show to the world how deceptive, hypocritical and dangerous the US's China policy is.
Falsehood 1: China poses the most serious long-term challenge to the international order and is undermining it. The US will defend the international law, agreements, principles, and institutions that maintain peace and security, and protect the rights of individuals and sovereign nations.

Reality Check: What the US has constantly vowed to preserve is a so-called international order designed to serve the US's own interests and perpetuate its hegemony. The US itself is the largest source of disruption to the actual world order.

Why the US delayed China sanctions after shooting down a spy balloon | Economic Times - May 11, 2023 |

President Joe Biden's administration has sought to prevent a further deterioration in ties with China's Communist government, which many analysts say have hit the lowest point since they began in 1979.

Former diplomats and members of Congress from both parties have argued that the U.S. must keep channels of communication open with Beijing to avoid misunderstandings and navigate crises.

But the sources said the current policy hews too closely to an earlier strategy of engagement that enabled China to extract concessions in exchange for high-level dialogues that often yielded few tangible results.

Speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions, they said Blinken had largely delegated China policy duties to Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, the United States' second ranked diplomat.

In response to questions from Reuters, a senior State Department official said that under the Biden administration, the State Department had "coordinated with the interagency on a record-setting number of sanctions, export controls, and other competitive actions" toward China.

"Without commenting on specific actions, this work is sensitive and complex, and obviously sequencing is essential to maximize impact and make sure our messaging is clear and lands precisely," the official said.

Sherman did not respond to a request for comment.

Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Feb. 9, she said the department was "modernizing" its work and would "keep pushing back against the PRC's (People's Republic of China) aggressive military, diplomatic, and economic practices."

East Asia expert Edgard Kagan Defines Bullying of Allies by Joe Biden

Joe Biden's advisers say he doesn't want to drag Pacific allies into 'headlong clash' between US and China | The Guardian |

Edgard Kagan, the NSC's senior director for east Asia and Oceania, said Biden had been listening to the region's concerns.

The Australian government is also seeking to "stabilise" its relationship with China, with the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, suggesting he is open to travelling to Beijing later this year if restrictions on Australian exports are removed.

Kagan said on Friday that Biden had "long been very clear that he does not want conflict" with China, even though there would be "very serious competition" between the two countries.

"We both have strong interests and important interests but that doesn't mean that can't find ways in which we're able to at least sit down together, work together where possible," Kagan told the webinar hosted by the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney.

Mira Rapp-Hooper, the director for Indo-Pacific strategy at the NSC, admitted the tone of Biden's recent comments seeking constructive talks with China was also "an important tool of alliance management".

She acknowledged that allies and partners, within the region and across the world, "don't want to feel like they're being forced to choose between two competing great powers".

"They don't want to feel like they're being trampled by a headlong clash," Rapp-Hooper said.

Good friend and Rutte ally Halbe Zijlstra already propagated the false narrative of Putin's intentional rebuild a Greater Russia ...

The World According to Dutch FM Halbe Zijlstra | Feb. 12, 2018 |

Prime Minister Mark Rutte, whom Zijlstra said was informed of the story some weeks ago, defended the foreign minister, saying he was still "credible" because the content of the story is "not up for discussion."

Zijlstra, a close ally of Rutte, previously served as parliamentary leader of the center-right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) before he was appointed foreign minister in Rutte's third government last October.

Zijlstra said at a VVD party conference in 2016 that he heard the Russian president talking about plans to expand the country's borders and create a "Great Russia" that would include Belarus, Ukraine, the Baltic countries and possibly Kazakhstan.

An employee of oil company Shell at the time, Zijlstra had traveled to Russia with Jeroen van der Veer, then CEO of the company. Van der Veer told de Volkskrant that Putin's words should have been interpreted "in a historical context" and did not indicate a military intention to expand the country.

Just look at the polls ...

The best way to undermine people's trust and an attack on democracy itself ... Rutte IV FAILS !!

Rutte: "I'm the best PM to fix the ills of the nation ....".

On another occasion: "We are in a war to protect freedom from a dictator ...".

Test Ban Treaty (1963) | National Archives |

There was a universal peace movement from the 1960s extending into to 80s until the fall of the Berlin Wall and Russian glasnost by leader Gorbachev. Today seen as a traitor as the unipolar world continued its campaigns of regional wars and post 9/11 started to recognize struct NATO and expand it for a global alliance of wars of choice.

The false narrative of "unprovoked" military action is a non-starter and carefully build on decades of truth manipulation, historic revisionism, empowering Old Europe with centuries old grievances to advance the Atlantic agenda of neo-colonialism.

Disarmament and non-proliferation | MFA Suisse |

The Swiss policy of arms control and disarmament pursues the objective of preserving national and international security while minimizing the level of arms held throughout the world. Switzerland consistently supports non-proliferation and disarmament at international level, particularly where weapons of mass destruction are concerned.

Swiss security policy pursues the reinforcement of mutual trust among states. To this end Switzerland supports verifiable arms-control and disarmament mechanisms that do not discriminate against individual states or other entities. Switzerland considers it a fundamental principle that binding, universal agreements under international law take precedence over unilateral measures and arrangements that are only binding in political terms.

The West playing "you are a terrorist" game, applying strangling economic sanctions and military threats to bully sovereign states into subjugation ... a very old method of promoting a NWO, looking everyday more similar to expeditionary forces conquering the America's by colonial powers of Europe. No, there was no Al Qaeda in Iraq before March 2003 ... no the Palestinian cause is legitimate in search for their independence based on UNSC resolutions and international law. From the outset in the 21st century, both the US and Israel are the pariah states of the global community. Their leaders act with impunity, don't abide by decades old international treaties, non-proliferation of WMDs and unlawful killing with impunity. Non members of the ICC in The Hague and both threaten the Court with violence and military action.

Taking part in the debate of the war in Ukraine is four-star General Wesley Clark, renowned for stand-off at the Pristina airport blocked by British KFOR General Sir Michael "Mike" Jackson, who prevented a bloodshed with Russian peacekeepers.

Pristina an Airport Too Far

"General Jackson." said Wes Clark, US General and NATO's Supreme Allied Commander in Europe (SACEUR). "You will secure Pristina airport before the Russians arrive."

"Stuck in a Cold War mentality"

"Once you've decided to use force," Clark told a BBC documentary crew after the war, "you should use it as rapidly as possible and as decisively as possible."

It was a maxim that the four-star General, who had been decorated for bravery in Vietnam, definitely lived by. Both Jackson and Ellis had already witnessed this first hand. KFOR was a multinational force, with a variety of different military styles and cultures.

... Clark had decided to indulge in a piece of Patton-esque bravado.

People are confronted daily with arms to Ukraine to confront the Russians ... boring and very tiresome. Look how your tax dollars are spend and what is returned as evidence.

NRC Opinion columnist

Confusing moment at the Russian tank on display at Leidseplein. I'm talking with Yoeri Albrecht of renowned debate center De Balie, who brought over the shot-up army vehicle, when he is suddenly filmed and a boy, with a shaved head, holds out a black microphone to him.

"How do you feel about suppressing the opposition in Ukraine?"

The conversation, for YouTube channel Left Laser, turns teasing, teasing, sucking. Albrecht does his best at first, but then has had enough of the bullying, crosses the tram rails, and there he suddenly finds himself in a brief fight. Microphone falls between the rail. Albrecht snatches it up, holds it behind his back, puts his other arm around the boy, in a vain attempt to appease him, walks past the terrace of De Balie, where a group with protest signs chants: "Warmonger, warmonger!"

Yes, he's stirring things up, that Russian tank, captured by Ukrainian soldiers in Dmytrivka last year. In this entertainment center the war was something abstract, but here it is. Inescapable. And we have to relate to it. Tank wheel tracks collapsed, the clumps of grass from the front still attached. The vehicle is on tour. Earlier, in Berlin and Groesbeek, there was also a lot of fuss about it.

Is it a trophy? "Some see it that way, like Asterix and Obelix collecting the helmets of the Roman army," says Albrecht. But to him it symbolizes the fragility of democracy. "My mother was in a resistance group, and I always wondered who were the ones who stood up for such a dictator in the East."

The essence of freedom and democracy is the debate and freedom of expression ... WTF ... 90% of Dutch living in an echo chamber. Dangerous times .. piece of war propaganda coming home ... stop this stupid war  ☮️ #YouAreNato

The Russian tank that has been standing in front of the building of the Freedom Museum in Groesbeek has been daubed with the letter Z. The pro-Russian symbol was sprayed on the tank with white paint this afternoon.

The 44-ton T-72B has been standing in the parking lot of the Freedom Museum since Friday, together with a bullet-riddled Ukrainian ambulance. The tank was captured by the Ukrainian army in March last year after it ran into a French mine during a Russian attack on Kyiv and was badly damaged.

Don't conflate the war of choice 🇺🇦 due to aggression from two sides 🇺🇸 🇷🇺, as a battle for our freedom ⁉️ We are not fighting against Nazi fascism of Mussolini and Hitler. Ukraine is NOT fighting for our democracy. Stop the bull$hit war propaganda now. End the bloodshed and stop the "Hollywood" drama performances of Zelenskyy & company. Guarantee safety of wounded soldiers, POWs and prevent summary executions.

Hijacking Peace by Zelensky for War Escalation

So he came by night to The Hague, the city of Peace and Carnegie foundation of the Peace Palace and what it stands for.

Brutal war propaganda supported by opportunistic leader VVD party and Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

Today, Thursday May 4th is the Commemoration of heroes and war deaths, especially the citizens killed during the German occupation 1940-45 and the Jewish population arrested, transported through Westerbork to extermination camps of Hitler Nazi terror and genocide.

Most camps were on Ukrainian territory, Poland and Eastern Germany. Soviet prisoners of war too were slaughtered as sheep.

Russian shot up tank on Leidseplein evokes many different emotions | AT5 Local News |

A Russian tank has been standing on Leidseplein since today, which was destroyed by Ukrainian soldiers last year. Debate center De Balie wants to stimulate the conversation about democracy and how fragile it is. Although many passers-by find the tank impressive, not everyone is happy with it.

The Circular Economy: What, Why, How and Where | OECD |

    The Taxshift
An EU Fiscal Strategy to Support the Inclusive Circular Economy

Studies show that a taxshift works

Macroeconomic simulations have shown how a taxshift from labour to resources can have positive effects on economic growth, employment, import dependence and the climate. Examples include research by the OECD, Eurofound, ILO, World Bank and IMF as well as various meta-studies of hundreds of simulations with different macroeconomic models.

Earlier studies by The Ex'tax Project and its knowledge partners also found positive effects for a broad set of measures. It is now broadly recognised that shifting taxes from labour to natural resources and pollution has an important role to play.

    The European Green Deal states:

"Well-designed tax reforms can boost economic growth and resilience to climate shocks and help contribute to a fairer society and to a just transition. They play a direct role by sending the right price signals and providing the right incentives for sustainable behaviour by producers, users and consumers. At national level, the European Green Deal will create the context for broad-based tax reforms, removing subsidies for fossil fuels, shifting the tax burden from labour to pollution, and taking into account social considerations." Military Equipment Transfer in Support of Ukraine Must Not Hinder Aspiration for Peace, Disarmament Affairs Chief Tells UN Security Council

Voiceless Millions 'Do Not Willingly Raise Their Sons, Daughters to Be Fodder for Cannons' by World's Major Powers, Says Peace Activist

The Security Council today heard urgent calls, from within and outside the United Nations, for de-escalation of the conflict in Ukraine as delegates weighed the multifarious risks posed by arms flows against the need to assist that country defend itself.

The 15-member organ first heard from Izumi Nakamitsu, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, who issued a warning about the threats posed by the large-scale influx of weapons into a situation of armed conflict.

Many Governments have announced military assistance to Ukraine, including heavy conventional armaments and munitions as well as progressively heavier, modern systems, while other States are transferring weapons, such as combat drones, to the Russian armed forces for use in Ukraine, she noted.

Myth: Obama put the bust back in stock

On January 20, 2009 -- Inauguration Day -- all of the art lent specifically for President Bush's Oval Office was removed by the curator's office, as is common practice at the end of every presidency. The original Churchill bust remained on display in the residence. The idea put forward by Charles Krauthammer and others that President Obama returned the Churchill bust or refused to display the bust because of antipathy towards the British is completely false and an urban legend that continues to circulate to this day.

The UK Telegraph caused a stir this week, quoting a Mitt Romney advisor arguing that the Republican would improve American-British relations because of Romney's "Anglo-Saxon heritage." But the same article included another tidbit: two Romney advisors told the reporter the candidate would "reinstate the Churchill bust displayed in the Oval Office by George W. Bush."

... it is undeniable that Britain and America share an "Anglo-Saxon heritage." It is not, of course, the only American heritage -- or British heritage, for that matter -- but it is the dominant one, and it is the one whose values have ruled for better or for worse for the last 400 years. That much is historical fact. My view of this fact is that the British Empire and American project have both been net Good Things and that we should be thankful for them.

Qualified-nationalized German energy companies give huge bonuses to traders after losing billions | May 15, 2023 |

German energy firms Safe and Uniper have given some traders millions of dollars in bonuses for 2022, four sources familiar with the matter said, after Russia halted gas supplies to the companies in a multi-billion dollar deal. was saved from the bailout. ,

Germany has so far provided nearly 26 billion euros ($28.6 billion) in equity injections and loans to Safe and Uniper as they battle record losses to buy natural gas cargoes at record prices to replace lost supplies from Russia - Ukraine Germany's top gas supplier before the invasion.

While paying bonuses to bailed-out energy groups raises questions about the use of taxpayer money, it also highlights the need for companies to remain competitive.
Both SAFE - short for Securing Energy for Europe - and Uniper had to agree to salary limits for their management boards as part of the bailout but the bonus limits do not apply to all employees.
